Correction Signals Matter More Than Early Answers
Audio often includes self-correction: “We were going to meet on Thursday—actually, make that Friday because the hall is unavailable.” A student who writes the first date and stops listening will lose the final answer.
Words such as actually, rather, instead, I mean, sorry, changed to signal that the model must be updated.

Do not infer “the speaker hates the organisers” unless the evidence supports that stronger claim.
Tone and Attitude: Look for a Pattern
Attitude can appear through:
- word choice;
- repetition;
- emphasis;
- hesitation;
- contrast;
- laughter;
- pace;
- what the speaker chooses to praise or criticise.
Use several signals where possible. One pause may simply be thinking time.
Worked Example 3: Attitude
Speaker: “The organisers did eventually send the instructions—at ten o’clock the night before—and I suppose that was better than nothing.”
Supported attitude: critical, frustrated or sarcastically dissatisfied.
Evidence: “eventually”, the late timing, and “better than nothing” all frame the communication as inadequate.
Numbers: Hear the Unit and Relationship
Listening questions often make numbers difficult by surrounding them with alternatives.
“The original fee was thirty dollars, but early registration reduces it to twenty-four, while students pay eighteen.”
The correct number depends on the target group. Record numbers with labels: $30 standard / $24 early / $18 student.
Names and Places: Do Not Let Spelling Destroy Listening
When exact spelling is not required for the listening process, capture enough phonetic information to recognise the item and continue. If spelling matters in the actual response, use context and later repetition where available. The priority is to remain inside the audio stream.
Negative and Exception Questions
Questions containing not, except, least, only require extra task control. A listener can identify three true statements and still answer incorrectly because the question asks for the exception.
Mark the negative operator before the audio begins.
Distractors Are Often Plausible
An option can contain words from the recording and still be wrong. It may describe an early plan that was later changed, a reason mentioned but rejected, or a detail belonging to another speaker.
