A student creates ten beautiful slides and cannot explain what any of them are for. Another turns a research paragraph into an infographic by shrinking the paragraph until it fits. A third fills every empty space with icons, then discovers that the audience cannot find the one number that matters.
Multimodal representing is not decoration added after the thinking is complete. It is the act of deciding which mode should carry which part of the meaning. Words can define. Images can show relationship or appearance. Diagrams can reveal structure. Numbers can make scale visible. Spoken explanation can connect pieces and add nuance.
The design question is not “How do I make this look impressive?” It is “What does the audience need to understand, and which combination of modes carries that meaning most clearly?”
Why this belongs inside English
The current Singapore secondary English syllabus includes Speaking and Representing as well as Writing and Representing, and emphasises the integration of receptive and productive skills across different semiotic features. That makes representation through more than prose part of the language system, not a separate design hobby.

The five decisions before opening presentation software

One message per visual unit is a useful default
A slide or infographic panel becomes difficult to read when it tries to explain four unrelated ideas at once. A useful default is one dominant message per visual unit, supported by only the evidence needed for that message.
This is not a law that every slide contains one sentence. A comparison slide may need two columns; a process slide may need several steps. The principle is hierarchy: the audience should know what the unit is mainly doing.
Original case A: Presenting the study-room trial
Imagine the fictional study-room evidence used elsewhere in the Secondary 2 series: eighteen students registered at least once; twelve returned optional feedback; nine respondents said beginning homework was easier; three respondents reported transport difficulties; academic performance was not measured.
Task: Create a three-slide presentation recommending what the school should do next.
Slide 1 should establish the question, not the answer
Weak title: “Study Room Project”.
Stronger title: “Should the Study Room Continue Next Term?”
The second title tells the audience what decision the presentation will help make. A small subtitle could state the evidence boundary: “Based on one-month trial feedback from 12 respondents.”
This boundary belongs near the beginning because it controls every later claim.
Slide 2 should make the pattern visible
The central message is not “Here are some numbers.” It is “Most respondents reported easier homework starts, but transport remains a practical concern.”
A simple bar or ratio graphic could show 9 of 12 reporting easier starts. A smaller callout could show 3 of 12 reporting transport difficulty. Do not convert either number into a claim about the whole school.
If the spoken explanation repeats every number word for word, the two modes are doing the same job. Instead, the speaker can interpret: “The positive feedback is strong enough to justify another trial, but not strong enough to justify calling the programme successful for all students.”
Slide 3 should convert evidence into a bounded recommendation
Title: “Run a Second Trial — Change the Time, Improve the Measurement”.
Two bullets may be enough: “Test an earlier ending time” and “Record why students attend or do not attend”. The spoken explanation supplies the reasoning and acknowledges that these are proposals, not proven solutions.
The presentation now has a movement: question → evidence pattern → next action.
Visual hierarchy is reading guidance
Hierarchy tells the audience what to notice first. Size, placement, spacing, grouping and contrast can all contribute. The most important claim should not be visually weaker than a decorative icon.
Use hierarchy to reflect intellectual importance. If the participant limit determines eligibility, it should not disappear in tiny text while the word “FREE” dominates the entire slide.
Salience is not truth
A large number can draw attention without becoming more reliable. A photograph can create immediacy without proving that a claim applies widely. A professional layout can create confidence without supplying evidence.
Teach students to separate what the design makes noticeable from what the evidence establishes.
Choose the mode according to the relationship

Do not turn every idea into an image
Some ideas are easier to understand in words. “The trial did not measure grades” is already concise. Replacing it with an ambiguous icon of a test paper could reduce clarity.
Multimodal does not mean maximum modes. It means selecting the best mode for each job.
Captions should add meaning, not repeat labels
Weak caption under a bar: “Survey Results”.
Stronger caption: “9 of 12 feedback respondents said the room made it easier to begin homework.”
Even stronger boundary note: “Optional feedback; not a school-wide survey.”
The caption helps the reader interpret the graphic accurately.
Numbers need labels in visual form too
“75%” alone is not enough. Write “75% of 12 feedback respondents”. If the audience needs raw counts, show “9 of 12”.
Do not crop the denominator out of a chart because the percentage looks more dramatic without it.
Original case B: Build an infographic from research
Research question: “What makes a school notice easy to act on?” Your evidence suggests four recurring needs: clear action, visible deadline, accurate current version and access to necessary conditions.
A weak infographic would paste four paragraphs into boxes. A stronger one could use a central question with four surrounding elements, each containing a short principle and one concrete example.
Action: “Tell the reader what to do.” Example: “Register with your class representative.”
Deadline: “Make the time condition visible.” Example: “By Monday lunchtime.”
Current version: “Mark updates clearly.” Example: “Venue changed to B4.”
Eligibility: “Keep important limits close to the promise.” Example: “First 18 Secondary 2 students.”
The infographic is not a shortened essay. It reorganises the knowledge around a visual relationship.
The spoken layer should interpret, connect or qualify
If the screen says “9 of 12 respondents”, the speaker need not say, “Nine out of twelve respondents.” Instead: “This is encouraging, but it is feedback from respondents rather than a school-wide result.”
Speech is valuable when it adds the relationship that the visual cannot carry efficiently.
Do not make the audience read and listen to the same paragraph
When a slide contains a full paragraph and the speaker reads it aloud, the audience is asked to process the same language twice at competing speeds.
Keep visible text concise enough to orient the audience. Let the speaker provide explanation, evidence boundaries and transitions.
Source use in multimodal work
Images, charts, quotations and data still need source attribution. A beautiful infographic does not suspend research ethics.
Keep a source list during creation. Record which visual or claim comes from which source. If an image is not yours and usage rights matter, use material you are permitted to use and follow the required attribution practice.
For school assignments, follow your teacher’s citation and media-use requirements. This guide teaches the reasoning habit, not one universal citation style.
Image choice should have a job
Ask why an image is present. Does it show the object being discussed, establish place, demonstrate change, provide evidence or help explain a process?
If the only answer is “the slide looked empty”, the image is probably decorative. Decoration is not forbidden, but it should not compete with evidence.
Representation can distort through selection
Suppose a chart shows only the nine positive respondents and omits the three others. The designer has not necessarily changed a number, but the selection makes the evidence look unanimous.
Responsible representation shows enough context for the audience to interpret the claim fairly.
Scale and axes matter
If two values differ slightly, a truncated axis can make the visual difference appear enormous. Secondary 2 students do not need advanced statistics to learn one principle: the visual scale should not exaggerate what the numbers say.
When using a chart, ask whether a viewer could understand the magnitude without being misled by the design.
Original case C: Poetry as multimodal representation
Task: present the original poem “The Last Train Board” to classmates. Your purpose is not to decorate the poem but to help the audience notice its movement from external delay to internal tension.
Possible slide 1: a minimal timeline showing 11:42 → 11:49 beside the line “the board changes first”.
Possible slide 2: three small visual anchors—receipt, phone, window—with one phrase under each showing repeated human behaviour.
Spoken explanation: connect the objects as a pattern of waiting rather than analysing each independently.
The representation becomes an interpretation of structure.
Sequence is argument
A presentation does not become coherent because its slides are numbered. Slide order should create intellectual movement.
Common useful sequences include:
- question → evidence → conclusion;
- problem → cause → response;
- before → change → after;
- claim → challenge → revised claim;
- case → pattern → limitation → recommendation.
Choose the sequence that fits the audience job.
Transitions connect visual units
Do not say “Next slide” when you can state the intellectual movement: “The positive feedback explains why another trial is worth considering. The next question is whether the current timing excludes students.”
The transition tells the audience why the new slide belongs.
Audience questions are part of representing
A presentation may continue after the final slide. Prepare for questions by knowing which claims are strongly supported, which are proposals and which remain uncertain.
If asked, “Does this prove the study room improves grades?”, answer: “No. The trial measured feedback about beginning homework, not academic performance.” A strong presenter protects the evidence boundary even when challenged live.

Independent multimodal challenge
Use the question: “What makes a group discussion productive?” Build a four-slide presentation from the Discussion and Seminar Skills guide.
Slide 1: the central problem—discussion is not a row of speeches.
Slide 2: a six-part discussion map—build, clarify, support, challenge, qualify, synthesize.
Slide 3: one short example showing weak and stronger disagreement.
Slide 4: a closing rule—“Leave with a better model, not merely more turns.”
During delivery, do not read the six labels. Explain how one discussion turn can move from claim to evidence to challenge.
A design review before submission
- Can the audience identify the main question in ten seconds?
- Does every visual unit have one dominant job?
- Are important numbers labelled with their groups?
- Does every image earn its space?
- Does the spoken explanation add rather than duplicate?
- Are source boundaries visible?
- Does the sequence lead to the final recommendation?
- Can the presenter answer one reasonable challenge without overstating the evidence?
A two-week multimodal cycle
Week one: transform short prose into one visual unit. Make the student explain why each piece becomes text, diagram, number or speech.
Week two: build a three- or four-unit sequence from a research question. Add audience questions and require one revision after feedback. Remove decorative elements that compete with meaning.
Track specific errors such as “chart had no denominator”, “slide repeated speech”, “image was decorative but visually dominant”, or “recommendation appeared before evidence”.
For parents and teachers
Ask students to explain the job of every major design choice. “Why is this a chart instead of a sentence?” “Why is this image here?” “What does the audience need to understand before this slide appears?” These questions keep design attached to communication.
Do not reward visual polish more than accurate representation. A simple slide that preserves source limits and communicates clearly can be stronger than a sophisticated layout that distorts evidence.
When using templates, make the content fit the communication job rather than forcing the argument into whatever boxes the template provides.
