A pupil reads two sentences: “The rain stopped. The class continued the activity.” The pupil writes, “The class continued the activity because the rain stopped.” That may be reasonable. But what if the passage actually says the activity was indoors and had continued throughout the rain?
The two events are close together. Their relationship is not automatic.
English comprehension depends heavily on logical relationships: cause, result, contrast, sequence, condition, comparison, purpose and concession. These relationships can be expressed by connectors, punctuation, verb choice, paragraph order or simply the way ideas are arranged.
Strong readers do not only collect facts. They identify how the facts are connected.

Quick answer: name the relationship before the connector
Before choosing a connector or answering a relationship question, state the relationship in ordinary language:
- Cause: A makes B happen.
- Result: B happens because of A.
- Contrast: B differs from what A leads us to expect.
- Sequence: A happens before B.
- Condition: B depends on A.
- Purpose: A is done in order to achieve B.
- Comparison: A and B are judged along the same dimension.
- Concession: B happens despite A.
A useful routine is FACTS → RELATIONSHIP → LANGUAGE → CHECK. This is an eduKate teaching routine, not an official SEAB formula.
The official 2026 boundary
Logical relationships appear throughout Paper 2—in grammar, cloze, synthesis/transformation and comprehension—and support Paper 1 writing. They also matter in listening and oral communication when pupils explain reasons, compare options or follow changes.

Cause is not simply what happened earlier
“The bell rang. Amir closed his book.” The order suggests a possible cause: the bell may have signalled the end of the lesson.
But if the next sentence says Amir had already finished reading and was packing before the bell, the causal interpretation weakens.
Sequence provides evidence. It does not automatically prove cause.
Cause can be stated explicitly
“The event moved indoors because lightning was reported nearby.”
“Since the corridor was blocked, visitors used the side entrance.”
“The path was flooded, so the group chose another route.”
The connector signals the relation directly.
Cause can be implied
“The corridor filled with smoke. The teacher led everyone outside.”
No causal connector appears, but the relationship is strongly inferable.
A comprehension answer may need to make that implicit connection explicit: “The teacher led everyone outside because smoke had filled the corridor.”
Result is cause viewed from the other end
“The label was too small, so visitors missed it.”
Cause: small label.
Result: visitors missed it.
Questions may ask either side. “Why did visitors miss the label?” asks for cause. “What happened because the label was too small?” asks for result.
Purpose is not the same as result
“Maya moved the sign closer to the door to help visitors find the entrance.”
This states purpose.
“After the sign was moved, three visitors entered without asking for directions.”
This states an observed result.
Do not convert purpose into guaranteed success.
Contrast: the text changes direction
“The instructions were short, but several pupils misunderstood them.”
The first idea creates an expectation that short instructions may be easy. The second overturns that expectation.
Contrast markers include but, however, although, even though, yet, despite, instead, rather than, while in certain uses.
Do not choose a contrast connector just because two ideas are different. The relationship must involve opposition or unexpected difference.
Concession: difficulty exists, but does not stop the outcome
“Although Maya was nervous, she volunteered to speak first.”
Nervousness might normally discourage volunteering. The sentence highlights that the action occurs despite the difficulty.
This can support inference: Maya may be willing to act despite discomfort.
Sequence: preserve event order
“After the pupils completed the survey, they discussed the results.”
Completion precedes discussion.
“While the pupils completed the survey, the teacher prepared the display.”
The two actions overlap.
“Before the visitors arrived, the volunteers checked the signs.”
Sign checking precedes visitor arrival.
Sequence words carry meaning and affect tense.
Condition: one action depends on another
“If the weather improves, the activity will continue outdoors.”
Outdoor continuation depends on weather improvement.
“Unless you register, you cannot enter the workshop.”
Registration is a necessary condition for entry, but the sentence may not guarantee entry under all other circumstances.
Conditions should not be strengthened into universal guarantees.
Comparison: compare the same thing
“The second route was shorter but steeper than the first.”
Two routes are compared along length and steepness.
Weak comparison: “The first route was crowded, while the second route took ten minutes.”
This gives two facts but not a clean comparison because crowding and duration are different dimensions.
A question asking “How were the routes different?” can still accept several dimensions, but each contrast should be matched clearly.
Comparison words carry scope
more, less, fewer, as…as, unlike, both, similarly, whereas, compared with all help organise comparison.
“No other pupil in the group was as tall as Zara” restricts the comparison to the group. Removing “in the group” expands the scope unfairly.
Original passage: Two Routes to the Hall
Paragraph 1. Visitors to the school exhibition could reach the main hall by two routes. Route A crossed the courtyard. Route B went through a covered corridor.
Paragraph 2. Route A was shorter, and on dry mornings most visitors used it. However, the courtyard became slippery after heavy rain.
Paragraph 3. Route B took about three minutes longer. It remained dry because the corridor was covered, but it passed a staircase used by many pupils changing lessons.
Paragraph 4. On Friday morning, rain began before the exhibition opened. Volunteers first placed a warning sign beside Route A. Ten minutes later, they closed the courtyard route completely after seeing water collect near the steps.
Paragraph 5. All visitors were directed through Route B. The corridor was busy, so volunteers stood at two junctions to keep the flow moving.
Paragraph 6. By noon, the rain had stopped. The courtyard was still wet, so Route A remained closed until the school caretaker confirmed that the surface was safe.
Questions
1. Why did most visitors usually choose Route A on dry mornings?
2. How was Route B safer in wet weather?
3. What contrast is created in paragraph 3?
4. Why was Route A first warned about and then closed?
5. Why were volunteers placed at two junctions on Route B?
6. Why did Route A remain closed even after the rain stopped?
7. Compare Route A and Route B using two dimensions.
Worked answers
1. Visitors usually chose Route A because it was shorter.
2. Route B remained dry because it ran through a covered corridor.
3. Route B took longer but offered protection from rain; it was safer in wet weather but busier because it passed a staircase used by pupils.
4. The volunteers first warned visitors when rain made the courtyard slippery, then closed it when water began collecting near the steps and the risk increased.
5. The corridor was busy, so volunteers were needed to guide visitors through the junctions and keep the flow moving.
6. The rain had stopped, but the courtyard surface was still wet and had not yet been confirmed safe.
7. Route A was shorter but exposed to wet weather, while Route B was longer but covered. Another valid comparison is that Route A crossed a courtyard, while Route B passed a busy staircase.
Question 6: contrast plus cause
The phrase “the rain had stopped” creates an expectation that the route may reopen. “The courtyard was still wet” overturns that expectation and supplies the cause of continued closure.
One question can therefore depend on two relationships at once.
Logical chains
Passages often build chains:
rain → slippery courtyard → warning → water accumulation → closure → route shift → corridor congestion → volunteer guidance.
If the pupil sees only isolated sentences, later questions feel unrelated. If the chain is visible, many answers become easier to locate.
Cause chains can have more than one step
“The printer failed, so the labels were delayed, which meant visitors could not identify the tables immediately.”
Printer failure does not directly confuse visitors. It causes label delay, which causes the identification problem.
When a question asks for an immediate cause, give the nearest relevant step. When it asks for the original cause, trace farther back.
Multiple causes
An outcome may have several causes.
“The queue slowed because some visitors lacked confirmation numbers and one tablet stopped working.”
If the question asks for two reasons, both must be included.
Do not collapse separate causes into one vague statement such as “there were problems”.
Necessary versus sufficient conditions
“You must bring a pass to enter.” The pass is necessary.
It may not be sufficient if other conditions exist, such as a valid time slot.
This distinction helps pupils avoid overclaiming in visual-text and situational-writing questions.
Sequence can create mistaken cause
“The teacher entered the room. The lights went out.”
The order does not show that the teacher caused the blackout.
Teach pupils to ask whether the passage gives a mechanism, connector or additional evidence linking the events.
Comparison can reveal judgement
If a writer repeatedly compares the new system with the old one, the comparison may support evaluation.
Old system: fast but unreliable.
New system: slightly slower but fewer mistakes.
A likely evaluation is that the writer values reliability over small time savings.
Contrast can reveal character change
Early: “Labels take too long.”
Later: “Put the label where everyone can see it.”
The contrast between statements supports a change in viewpoint.
This connects directly to Inference Across Paragraphs.
Connectors in cloze
Original mini-cloze:
“The first sign was large, ______ it was placed behind a tall display board. Visitors therefore missed it. The class moved the sign forward ______ everyone entering the hall could see it.”
Blank 1 needs contrast: but or although with structural adjustment. Blank 2 needs purpose/result: so that.
Do not choose connectors by memorised pairs. Name the logic first.
Connectors in writing
Weak: “However, I entered the hall. Therefore, my friend was there. Moreover, I spoke to her.”
The connectors are grammatically possible but logically unjustified.
Better: “I entered the hall and saw my friend beside the broken display. Because she had already started gathering the pieces, I joined her.”
Good cohesion can be simple.
Synthesis and logical preservation
Original: “The box was heavy. Mei could not lift it.”
Possible synthesis: “The box was too heavy for Mei to lift.”
The cause-result relationship is preserved.
Weak synthesis: “Mei did not lift the box because she did not want to.”
Inability has become unwillingness.
Original passage: The Earlier Reminder
Paragraph A. A class wanted pupils to bring reusable bottles to a school event. They first placed a reminder beside the hall entrance.
Paragraph B. The sign was large and easy to see. However, some pupils still arrived without bottles because they had left home before seeing the reminder.
Paragraph C. For the next event, the class sent the reminder in the registration message three days earlier.
Paragraph D. More pupils arrived with bottles. The class still kept the hall sign because it reminded participants where the filling station was located.
Paragraph E. The pupils concluded that visibility mattered, but timing mattered too.
Questions
1. Why was the first reminder limited even though it was easy to see?
2. What changed in the second approach?
3. Why did the class keep the hall sign?
4. What contrast does the final sentence express?
5. What broader principle can be inferred?
Worked answers
1. Some pupils saw the reminder only after leaving home, when it was too late to retrieve their bottles.
2. The reminder was sent earlier in the registration message, before pupils prepared to leave home.
3. The sign still served a different purpose by showing where the filling station was located.
4. A reminder must be visible, but visibility alone is insufficient if the message reaches the reader too late.
5. Effective instructions need to reach people at the time they can still act on them, not merely be noticeable.
One detail can perform two logical jobs
The hall sign is both limited and useful. It fails as an early reminder but succeeds as a location guide.
A mature reader can hold both without forcing a simple “good sign/bad sign” judgement.
Three pupil profiles
The connector memoriser: knows words but not logic. Repair: name relationship before choosing language.
The sequence-equals-cause reader: assumes earlier event caused later one. Repair: require mechanism or supporting evidence.
The mismatched comparer: compares different dimensions. Repair: label the dimension before writing both sides.
Independent transfer: Two Check-In Systems
System A: Visitors write their names on a paper list. It is quick, but handwriting can be difficult to read.
System B: Visitors enter their names on a tablet. It takes slightly longer, but the names are easier to read and can be searched later.
During one event, the tablet battery fails. Volunteers temporarily use the paper list while a replacement charger is found.
Questions:
1. Compare the two systems on speed and readability.
2. Why was the paper list useful during the battery failure?
3. Does the battery failure prove System A is better overall? Explain.
4. What condition is required for System B to work?
5. What balanced conclusion could the organisers draw?
Transfer answers
1. System A is faster but may produce hard-to-read names; System B is slightly slower but produces clearer, searchable records.
2. It provided a backup method while the tablet could not operate.
3. No. The failure reveals one weakness—dependence on power—but does not remove System B’s advantages in readability and search.
4. The tablet needs sufficient power or access to charging.
5. They could use System B as the main system while keeping a paper backup for technical failures.
A four-week logic cycle
Week 1: cause, result and purpose. Week 2: contrast and concession. Week 3: sequence, condition and comparison. Week 4: mixed passage reasoning, synthesis and writing transfer.
What parents can observe
- Can the child distinguish cause from sequence?
- Can the child identify purpose versus outcome?
- Can the child explain a contrast?
- Can the child compare the same dimension?
- Can the child preserve conditions without turning them into guarantees?
- Can the child choose connectors based on logic?
- Can the child trace a multi-step cause chain?
