Wait, What? A Chart Is Still a Text

Primary 5 learners often think reading means sentences and paragraphs. Yet school learning increasingly stores meaning in tables, graphs, timetables, maps, keys, legends, labels and mixed visual displays. These forms may contain fewer words, but they demand precise reading because information is distributed across space instead of arranged in a normal sentence sequence.

The learner must know where to look, what unit applies, which row intersects which column, whether a symbol carries meaning, what condition limits an entry and how to convert visual evidence back into accurate language. This is English because the final job is still meaning.

Visual information becomes readable when the learner can reconstruct the hidden sentence behind the layout.

Tables: Read the Intersection

Imagine this table:

Question: How many pupils attended the Repair Corner on Wednesday?

Route: Repair Corner row → Wednesday column → 15 pupils.

The answer is not “15”. The unit matters: 15 pupils.

Row–Column Errors Are Usually Attention Errors

If a pupil answers 12, the problem may not be arithmetic or comprehension. The learner may have stayed in the correct row but stopped at Tuesday. A useful repair is to trace one finger across the row and another down the column until they meet.

Totals and Differences

Using the same table:

  • Total Repair Corner attendance = 9 + 12 + 15 = 36 pupil-visits.
  • Difference between Monday and Wednesday Repair Corner attendance = 15 − 9 = 6 pupils.
  • Highest Wednesday attendance = Reading Club with 16 pupils.

Notice the language. A total across days may count visits rather than unique individuals. Do not silently convert one kind of quantity into another.

Charts: Read the Axis Before the Shape

A rising line looks like an increase, but the learner still needs to know what the horizontal and vertical axes represent. A graph of “pages read” over “weeks” tells a different story from “minutes spent reading” over “weeks”.

  • Read the graph title.
  • Read the horizontal-axis label.
  • Read the vertical-axis label.
  • Check units.
  • Check interval size.
  • Only then interpret trend.

Scale Can Trick the Eye

If a vertical axis begins at 80 instead of 0, a small difference may look visually dramatic. This does not make the graph dishonest automatically, but the reader must inspect the scale before judging the size of change.

Suppose scores rise from 82 to 86. The increase is four points whether the graph makes it look small or enormous.

Bar Charts: Compare Like With Like

If a bar chart compares library loans by month, compare months on the same measure. Do not compare “March fiction loans” with “all April loans” unless the chart explicitly supports that comparison.

A useful comparison sentence is:

“Fiction loans were 12 higher in April than in March.”

This is stronger than “April was better” because it identifies the category and the amount.

Line Graphs: Describe Change Carefully

  • rose gradually;
  • increased sharply;
  • remained stable;
  • fell slightly;
  • reached a peak;
  • fluctuated;
  • returned to the earlier level.

These verbs describe patterns. They do not explain causes unless additional evidence is provided.

Trend Does Not Prove Cause

Suppose reading loans rise after a new reading corner opens. The timing may suggest a relationship, but the chart alone does not prove the reading corner caused the increase. Other changes may have occurred too.

Safer sentence: “Loans increased after the reading corner opened.”

Stronger causal claim requires more evidence.

Pie Charts: Parts of a Whole

A pie chart usually represents a whole divided into categories. Before interpreting, ask what the whole is. “Preferred reading genre among 40 surveyed pupils” differs from “percentage of all books in the library by genre”.

If 25% of 40 pupils choose nonfiction, that represents 10 pupils. But do not convert percentage to count unless the total is known.

Timetables: Time Is a Relationship

Timetables test more than locating a time. They often require duration, sequence, transfer time or conditions.

Reading Workshop ends at 9:45. Science Talk begins at 10:00. Available time = 15 minutes.

Protect Time Conditions

“Arrive at least ten minutes before the session.” If the session begins at 10:00, arriving at 9:55 is not enough. The phrase at least is a condition, not decoration.

Maps: Read the Key Before the Route

Maps use symbols, direction, scale and spatial relationships. A learner who ignores the key may misread a dashed line as a road when it represents a footpath.

  • title;
  • legend or key;
  • north arrow or direction reference;
  • scale if distance matters;
  • labels;
  • route restrictions;
  • start and destination.

Route Language

  • north of;
  • south-east of;
  • beside;
  • opposite;
  • between;
  • through;
  • across;
  • along;
  • past;
  • towards.

Map reading is therefore also preposition and procedural-language practice.

Map Scale and Distance

If 1 cm on the map represents 200 m in reality, a 3 cm route represents 600 m. The unit conversion belongs to Mathematics, but the English learner still has to read the scale statement accurately.

Keys and Legends Carry Vocabulary

A symbol may represent stairs, toilets, bus stops, entrances, hazards or accessible routes. The learner should not guess from appearance alone. Read the legend and map the symbol to its meaning.

Small Print Can Change the Answer

Visual texts often place conditions in notes:

  • *Closed on public holidays.
  • †For participants aged 10 and above.
  • Route available only after 3 p.m.
  • Prices exclude equipment rental.

A correct number from the main table can still produce a wrong answer if the condition is ignored.

The Condition Sweep

  1. Answer provisionally from the main display.
  2. Scan for asterisks, footnotes, colour keys and notes.
  3. Check whether the selected item carries a symbol.
  4. Apply the condition.
  5. Rewrite the answer if necessary.

Question 1: Which genre increased the most?

Fiction increased by 13 loans, nonfiction by 7, biography by 3 and poetry decreased by 1. Fiction increased the most.

Question 2: Is it accurate to say “Every genre became more popular”?

No. Poetry loans fell from 12 to 11. Also, “more popular” may require more evidence than loan counts alone. Safer: “Loans increased for fiction, nonfiction and biography but fell slightly for poetry.”

No. Poster Design ends at 10:50 while Simple Coding begins at 10:30, so the sessions overlap by 20 minutes.

Original Visual Task 3: Comparing Routes

Route A: 650 m, sheltered, includes one staircase.

Route B: 500 m, uncovered, step-free.

Question: Which is the “best” route?

The visual information alone does not define best. For shortest distance, Route B. For shelter in heavy rain, Route A may be preferable. For a traveller who needs a step-free route, Route B. The answer depends on criterion.

Comparisons Need Matched Dimensions

Weak: “Route A is sheltered, but Route B is 500 m.” One side is weather protection; the other is distance.

Matched: “Route B is 150 m shorter than Route A.”

Another matched comparison: “Route A is sheltered, whereas Route B is uncovered.”

From Visual Evidence to Sentence

A strong answer includes the category, relationship and unit.

Weak: “It went up by 13.”

Stronger: “Fiction loans increased by 13 from May to June.”

The second sentence can stand alone without the reader guessing what “it” means.

Direct Evidence Versus Inference

Directly shown: June fiction loans were 61.

Supported calculation: fiction loans increased by 13 from May.

Possible inference: pupils became more interested in fiction.

The final statement may be plausible but needs caution because loan counts can change for several reasons.

Visual Persuasion

Charts and maps can influence readers through scale, category selection, colour emphasis, omitted baselines or chosen time periods. Primary 5 learners do not need advanced statistical critique, but they should learn to ask:

  • What is included?
  • What is not shown?
  • Where does the scale begin?
  • What period is covered?
  • What group was measured?
  • Does the title describe or persuade?

Mixed Text and Visual Sources

A paragraph may explain why attendance changed while a chart shows when it changed. The learner must keep the sources separate long enough to understand each, then combine them carefully.

Example synthesis: “The chart shows attendance rising from Week 2, while the accompanying note states that the new booking system began at the start of Week 2. The timing is consistent with a possible relationship, although the information does not prove the booking system was the only cause.”

A 20-Minute Visual-Information Workout

  1. Choose one table, chart, timetable and map.
  2. State the title and unit for each.
  3. Find one exact value.
  4. Calculate one difference or duration.
  5. Identify one condition or legend item.
  6. Write one matched comparison.
  7. Write one direct-evidence sentence.
  8. Write one inference and label its certainty.
  9. Check whether the inference goes beyond the display.

Transfer Into Mathematics and Science

Mathematics often supplies the calculation, but English supplies the question interpretation and final sentence. Science charts require accurate labels, units, trends and evidence boundaries. The same visual-reading control therefore transfers across subjects.

Transfer Into Situational Writing

Situational writing frequently uses source packs containing schedules, notices, maps or tables. A learner who reads visual information accurately is less likely to omit a date, reverse a condition or invent a detail while transforming source information into a message.

Parent Use

Use real timetables, menus, transport maps or simple charts. Ask, “What does this number measure?” and “What condition might change the answer?” Everyday visual reading builds accuracy without turning every exercise into test practice.

Tutor Use

Diagnose whether mistakes come from layout navigation, units, arithmetic, conditions or language. Do not reteach the entire visual when one small control is failing. Require answers to return visual evidence to precise sentences.

A visual text becomes manageable when the learner stops treating the display as a picture. Read the title. Read the labels. Check the units. Follow the intersection. Protect the condition. Compare the same thing. Then turn what you see back into language that another person can understand without the chart beside them.

The layout stores the meaning. The reader’s job is to reconstruct it accurately.
