Primary 5 learners increasingly meet tasks that require them to find, compare and use information rather than simply receive it. The challenge is not only locating information. It is deciding what question is being asked, which source is suitable, what details are relevant, how to keep track of where information came from, and how to combine ideas without turning someone else’s sentences into the learner’s own work.
Information literacy is therefore a language-and-reasoning system. Search terms matter. Source purpose matters. Notes matter. Evidence boundaries matter. Synthesis matters. The goal is not to make Primary 5 pupils into professional researchers. It is to build habits that keep information traceable, useful and honest.
Research begins with a question, becomes useful through source control, and becomes knowledge only when the learner can explain the answer in a new form.

- Keywords: Which words are essential to the search?
- Source: Who created this information and for what purpose?
- Evidence: Which details actually answer the question?

The second version is easier to research because it contains a setting, a problem and an action target.

The learner can add or remove terms depending on the results. Search is iterative rather than one perfect attempt.
Synonyms Expand Search
- single-use plastic ↔ disposable plastic
- school canteen ↔ cafeteria / lunch area

- repair ↔ fix / mend
- rubbish ↔ waste / trash
If one term produces weak results, a synonym may open a different route.
Source Suitability: Ask Who, Why and When
- Who created the information?
- Why was it created—to explain, sell, persuade, entertain, report or instruct?
- When was it produced or updated?
- What evidence does it provide?
- Does it fit the exact question?
A commercial page can still contain useful information, but its purpose matters. A government or educational source may be more suitable for rules or official guidance. A personal account may be useful for experience but weak for broad claims about everyone.
Authority Depends on the Question
The “best” source changes with the task. For official examination format, an official examination authority is more suitable than a random study blog. For what one pupil experienced during a project, a first-person account may be exactly the right source. Source quality is not one fixed ranking; it depends on what claim the learner is trying to support.
Original Research Task: How Can a Class Reduce Paper Waste?
Research question: What practical changes could a Primary 5 class make to reduce unnecessary paper use without making schoolwork harder?
Possible sub-questions:
- Which classroom activities use the most paper?
- Which paper can be reused safely?
- When is digital work practical?
- What problems might digital-only work create?
- How could pupils measure whether waste is actually reduced?
Sub-Questions Prevent Random Fact Collection
Without sub-questions, the learner may collect facts about forests, recycling factories, printer ink and climate change without answering the classroom problem. Sub-questions act as filters.
Relevance Test
Research question: How can a class reduce unnecessary paper use?

Traceable Notes: Never Let the Source Disappear
A simple Primary 5 note system can use source labels:
- S1: official school recycling guide

Notes then become:

- S2 — digital work may reduce printing but still uses devices/electricity

Do Not Copy Whole Sentences Into Notes

Paraphrase After Understanding
Unsafe method: look at the source sentence and replace three words with synonyms.
Safer method:
- Read the idea.
- Explain it aloud in simple language.
- Close or look away from the source.
- Write the meaning from memory.
- Return and check that no condition or quantity changed.
Claim Checking Across Sources
If one source says “digital work always reduces environmental impact”, a careful learner should pause. The word always is very strong. A second source may point out energy use, device manufacturing or accessibility issues. The research question may need a more careful conclusion.
Safer synthesis: Digital work can reduce some printing, but whether it is the better option depends on the task, device access and how the technology is used.
Agreement Between Sources
When two independent sources support the same practical point, confidence may increase. But the learner should still ask whether the sources are actually independent, recent enough and discussing the same context.
Disagreement Between Sources
Disagreement is not a reason to give up. It can reveal different definitions, settings, evidence or priorities.
- Are they talking about the same age group?
- Are they measuring the same outcome?
- Is one source older?
- Does one discuss cost while the other discusses convenience?
- Is one making a general claim and the other describing one case?

Synthesis: A reusable-container programme may reduce disposable packaging, but it is more likely to work consistently if pupils have a simple reminder routine and easy access to washing or storage.
The answer integrates the sources around one problem rather than presenting three mini-summaries.

Source notes:

Synthesis: A useful book swap needs clear rules for book condition, simple categories and a fair exchange system. Organised display and limits on how books are added can reduce confusion.
Research Is Also Knowing What You Do Not Know
Good research can end with an unanswered question. If sources explain benefits but provide no information about cost, the learner should not invent a cost conclusion. Mark the gap: Need evidence on cost.
Stop Conditions
A Primary 5 learner does not need endless browsing. Stop when:
- the main question has enough supported information;
- important claims can be traced to sources;
- major disagreement has been checked;
- new sources are mostly repeating the same points;
- the learner can explain the answer without copying.
