Wait, What? Many “Careless Mistakes” Begin Before the Answer
A Primary 5 learner may understand the topic and still fail a task because the instructions were not converted into actions accurately. A question can contain several jobs at once: choose two details, use evidence from Source B, explain one difference, write in complete sentences, and do not repeat the example already given.
When instructions become dense, the learner needs a control system for command words, sequence, conditions, limits, source ownership and completion. This is useful in English, Science, Mathematics, projects, forms, examinations and everyday instructions.
A task becomes manageable when every hidden requirement is turned into a visible action.
Quick Answer
- Find the command verb.
- Count the required outputs.
- Identify the source.
- Mark conditions and limits.
- Put actions in order.
- Protect exceptions.
- Check completion against the original instruction.
- Do not solve a different task simply because it is familiar.
The Task-Language Control Map

Command Words Are Jobs

Different subjects may use command words slightly differently, so the learner should read the surrounding task rather than memorise one rigid definition.
Count the Outputs
Instruction: “Give two reasons why the writer thinks the change was necessary.”
A perfect first reason is still incomplete if the task asks for two.

Source Ownership
Instruction: “Using Source B, explain one problem with the proposed route.”
A fact from Source A may be true but still fail the task. The source requirement is part of the answer form.
Conditions Change the Task
“Choose the cheaper route only if it takes no more than ten minutes longer.”
The task is not simply “choose the cheaper route”. The time condition must be checked first.
Constraint Words to Protect
- only;
- unless;
- at least;
- no more than;
- exactly;
- except;
- without;
- using only;
- in no more than 50 words;
- do not repeat.
These words can completely change what counts as a correct answer.
Sequence: Some Tasks Are Dependency Chains
Instruction:
- Read both notices.
- Identify one difference in timing.
- Explain how that difference affects participants.
- Recommend one option.
If the learner recommends first, the decision may be unsupported. Earlier steps create the evidence for later steps.
The Instruction Rewrite
Dense instruction:
Using information from the chart and the organiser’s note, identify two changes between Week 1 and Week 4 and explain which change would matter most to a pupil who can attend only after 3 p.m.
Rewrite as actions:
- Read chart.
- Read organiser note.
- Find two Week 1 → Week 4 changes.
- Identify condition: pupil available only after 3 p.m.
- Choose which change matters most under that condition.
- Explain why.

Multi-Step Instructions in Situational Writing
A source pack may ask the learner to write to a particular audience, include five content points, preserve a date, explain a change and request a reply. Strong writers convert the source pack into a checklist before drafting.
Original Situational Task Checklist
- Audience: classmate
- Purpose: inform + request confirmation
- Date: 22 September
- New venue: library
- Time: unchanged
- Bring: registered books
- Action: reply if unable to attend
The checklist separates task execution from sentence creation.
Multi-Step Instructions in Comprehension
Question: “How did the character’s decision in paragraph 5 solve the problem introduced in paragraph 2? Use one piece of evidence from each paragraph.”
Task components:
- identify problem from paragraph 2;
- identify decision from paragraph 5;
- explain causal relationship;
- use evidence from paragraph 2;
- use evidence from paragraph 5.
Multi-Step Instructions in Projects
“Working in groups of four, select one design, record two strengths and one limitation, revise the design once, then present the final version in under three minutes.”
Hidden controls:
- group size = four;
- one design only;
- two strengths;
- one limitation;
- one revision;
- final presentation;
- time limit = under three minutes.
Negation Matters
“Which statement is not supported by the passage?”
The learner may know the content perfectly and still answer incorrectly if not is missed. Mark negative command words visibly.
Except Questions
“All of the following are reasons except…” requires the learner to find the item outside the set. Rewrite mentally: Which option is not one of the reasons?
At Least and No More Than
- at least 3 = 3 or more;
- no more than 3 = 3 or fewer;
- more than 3 = 4 or more if whole numbers;
- fewer than 3 = 0, 1 or 2 if whole numbers.
Language constraints often become numerical constraints.
Exact Quantities
Instruction: “Quote one phrase.” Copying a whole sentence may ignore the requested answer form even if the relevant phrase appears inside it.
Word Limits
A word limit is part of the task. Plan the answer to fit rather than writing long and deleting randomly at the end. Preserve the required relationships first.
Completion Checks
Before submitting, compare the finished answer with the original instruction, not with memory of the instruction.
- Did I perform the right command?
- Did I give the correct number of outputs?
- Did I use the required source?
- Did I obey conditions?
- Did I stay within limits?
- Did I answer every part?
Original Task 1: Compare and Recommend
Instruction: “Compare Routes A and B in terms of distance and shelter. Recommend one route for a pupil using crutches during heavy rain.”
Task model:
- compare distance;
- compare shelter;
- condition 1: uses crutches;
- condition 2: heavy rain;
- recommend one route;
- justify using relevant criteria.
Original Task 2: Use Two Sources
Instruction: “Using the timetable and the notice, explain why Tricia cannot attend both workshops in full.”
The answer needs the timetable’s times plus any notice condition that affects attendance. Using one source only may produce an incomplete explanation.
Original Task 3: Exclusion
Instruction: “Choose two benefits of the programme, excluding the example already given.”
Task plan:
- read given example;
- mark it as unavailable;
- find two different benefits;
- check they are genuinely separate.

- Choose five real instructions from different subjects.
- Underline the command word.
- Circle quantities.
- Box source requirements.
- Highlight condition or constraint words.
- Rewrite each instruction as visible actions.
- Complete one task.
- Run a final completion check against the original wording.
Transfer Across Subjects
Science may ask learners to describe, explain, compare or predict. Mathematics may use language such as at least, no more than, difference, total, estimate or justify. Project work may combine role, source, sequence and time limits. The same instruction-reading system travels across these surfaces.
Parent Use
Before helping with a task, ask the child to rewrite the instruction as actions. If the child cannot state what has to be produced, solving the content problem too early removes the chance to build instruction control.
Tutor Use
Separate content errors from task-execution errors. Occasionally use easy content with difficult instructions so pupils learn to diagnose command, count, source and condition failures rather than blaming subject knowledge.

Dense instructions become easier when the learner stops trying to hold them as one sentence. Find the command. Count the outputs. Mark the source. Protect the condition. Respect the limit. Then check the finished work against the wording that started the task.
Many difficult tasks become ordinary once every requirement is made visible.
