Wait, What? Synthesis Is Not Copying One Fact From Each Source
Primary 5 learners increasingly meet information spread across paragraphs, tables, charts, notices, maps and captions. The challenge is not simply to understand each source. It is to work out how the sources relate without blending them into a vague summary.
A strong synthesis keeps source ownership visible long enough to compare what each source contributes. One source may explain cause while another shows change over time. One may give a general claim while another supplies a specific example. Two sources may agree, qualify one another or appear to conflict because they measure different things.
Synthesis begins with separation: understand each source accurately before asking them to work together.

- Match evidence to the same dimension.
- Combine only compatible information.
- Preserve units, conditions and time periods.

Step 1: Name the Shared Question
Suppose a class is deciding whether to keep a weekly reading period. Source A is a pupil survey. Source B is a chart of library loans. Source C is a teacher note about observed reading behaviour.
The useful shared question is not “What does each source say?” It is: What evidence do these sources provide about whether the reading period is being used meaningfully?
Step 2: Build Separate Source Models

Separating the source models protects the learner from letting one source silently change the meaning of another.
Step 3: Preserve Source Ownership
Weak synthesis: “Pupils liked the reading period and loans increased, so it definitely worked.”
Stronger: “The pupil survey shows that most respondents preferred having regular reading time, while the library chart shows an increase in loans during the same six-week period. These sources point in the same direction, although neither proves that every pupil read more.”
The stronger version tells the reader which source supports which claim and protects the evidence boundary.
Four Main Relationships Between Sources
- Agreement: both sources support a similar conclusion.
- Addition: one source adds a different piece of the explanation.
- Contrast: sources show different results or perspectives.
- Qualification: one source limits how strongly another source should be interpreted.
Agreement
Text source: “The number of pupils using the repair corner increased during the month.”
Table source: Week 1 = 9 visits; Week 4 = 24 visits.
Synthesis: “Both sources indicate increased use of the repair corner: the text describes growth over the month, and the table shows visits rising from 9 in Week 1 to 24 in Week 4.”
Addition
Text source explains why the system was introduced. Chart source shows what changed after introduction.
Synthesis: “The text explains that the second counter was added to reduce queues, while the chart shows average waiting time falling after the counter opened.”
The sources contribute different jobs: purpose and observed outcome.
Contrast
Survey: most pupils say the new system is easier.
Observation note: several younger pupils still need help with the sign-in steps.
Synthesis: “Although most surveyed pupils described the system as easier, the observation note shows that some younger pupils still require support.”
The sources do not necessarily contradict each other. “Most” can coexist with “some”.
Qualification
Chart: attendance rose after an event was advertised.
Note: the event was also moved to a larger room at the same time.
Safe synthesis: “Attendance increased after the advertising campaign began, but the simultaneous move to a larger room means the chart alone cannot show which change caused the increase.”
Matching Dimensions
Do not combine unlike measures as if they answer the same question.
Source A: 70% of surveyed pupils preferred Option A.
Source B: Option B costs $40 less per month.
These sources address different criteria: preference and cost. A synthesis can compare the trade-off, but should not say one source “proves” the other.
Units Matter
Five minutes and five kilometres are both “5”, but they cannot be combined. The same is true for percentages, counts, rates and averages. Before integrating numerical evidence, label the unit.
Time Periods Matter
A survey conducted this week should not automatically be treated as evidence about the whole year. A chart showing January to March should not be summarised as “throughout the year”.
Useful language:
- during the six-week period;
- among the surveyed pupils;
- in the first three months;
- for the class observed;
- according to the timetable dated 18 September.
Visual Sources Need Their Own Reading First
Before synthesising a graph or table with a paragraph, read the visual independently: title, labels, units, scale, footnotes and conditions. Otherwise the learner may import the paragraph’s interpretation into the visual before checking what the visual actually shows.
Original Source Set: School Garden Water Use
Source A — note: The gardening group began checking soil moisture before watering each planter instead of watering every planter automatically each afternoon.

Source Models
- Source A gives the change in watering method.
- Source B shows water use decreasing across four weeks.
- Source C gives a reason some planters may need less frequent watering.
Possible Synthesis
“After the gardening group began checking soil moisture before watering, weekly water use fell from 180 L to 138 L over four weeks. The observation that sheltered planters stayed damp longer helps explain why a fixed daily watering routine could use more water than necessary. The sources support the value of checking conditions before watering, although they do not show that soil checking was the only reason water use decreased.”
Why the Synthesis Works
- source ownership is preserved;
- the numerical change includes units;
- the observation supplies a mechanism;
- the conclusion remains calibrated;
- the sources are integrated rather than merely listed.
Synthesis Versus Summary
A summary compresses one source or a set of sources. A synthesis goes further by explaining how the pieces relate around a shared question.
Summary: “Water use fell over four weeks, and some planters stayed damp longer.”
Synthesis: “Because some sheltered planters remained damp longer, checking soil conditions before watering could reduce unnecessary watering; the four-week data is consistent with that possibility.”
Synthesis Versus Comparison
Comparison asks how sources are similar or different. Synthesis uses those relationships to build a broader explanation or conclusion.

Source Ownership Language

Do Not Average Unmatched Numbers
If one source gives 60% satisfaction and another gives 40 minutes average waiting time, averaging them produces a meaningless number. Numerical synthesis still requires conceptual compatibility.
Do Not Turn Two Weak Sources Into One Strong Claim
Two anecdotes do not automatically equal strong evidence. Source quantity matters less than source relevance and quality. A synthesis should not become more certain merely because it includes more sentences.
Handling Apparent Contradictions
- Check whether the sources measure the same thing.
- Check dates and populations.
- Check definitions.
- Check whether one source reports perception and another behaviour.
- Check whether “some”, “most” and “all” are being confused.
- If the contradiction remains, report it rather than forcing agreement.
Original Contradiction Example
Survey: 80% of pupils say they read at home at least three times a week.
Reading log: only 45% submitted three or more home-reading entries.
Do not say one source is automatically false. Possible synthesis: “Self-reported reading frequency was higher than the frequency recorded in submitted logs. The difference may reflect incomplete logging, different interpretations of ‘reading’, or over-reporting, so more information would be needed to explain the gap.”
Evidence Strength Ladder
- Directly shows: value or statement appears in source.
- Supports: evidence is relevant and consistent with claim.
- Suggests: evidence points toward claim but alternatives remain.
- Is consistent with: claim fits evidence but is not established.
- Does not establish: evidence is insufficient for strong conclusion.

A 20-Minute Synthesis Workout
- Choose two short sources on one topic.
- Write one-sentence source models separately.
- Identify the shared question.
- Record source ownership beside each fact.
- Find one agreement, addition, contrast or qualification.
- Check units, dates and populations.
- Write a two- or three-sentence synthesis.
- Underline the conclusion word: shows, supports, suggests or may.
- Ask whether the certainty matches the evidence.
Transfer Into Research
Research becomes synthesis when the learner stops collecting quotations and starts organising sources around questions. Traceable notes, source ownership and evidence boundaries are the same controls used here.
Transfer Into Comprehension
Some comprehension tasks require integrating information from different paragraphs or a text plus visual. The same source-model discipline prevents the learner from merging details that belong to different contexts.
Parent Use
Use two everyday sources, such as an event notice and a timetable. Ask, “What does each source add?” and “What can we safely conclude only after reading both?” Keep the exercise focused on relationship rather than volume.
Tutor Use
Require separate source models before synthesis. Use deliberately mismatched units or populations so learners must reject invalid combinations. Reward calibrated conclusions rather than stronger-sounding claims.

Synthesis becomes strong when the learner resists the urge to blend everything immediately. Hold each source steady. Ask what it contributes. Protect its limits. Then connect only the pieces that genuinely answer the same question.
The sources do not become one source. They become a better answer because their differences remain visible.
