Sometimes the Hardest Part of a Question Is Not the English Answer. It Is Knowing What the Question Actually Requires.
By Primary 4, students are increasingly asked to follow instructions that contain several actions, sources, conditions and limits at once. A task may say: read the passage, study the chart, choose two reasons, support each with evidence, write in complete sentences and do not repeat the same example. None of these instructions is individually difficult. The challenge is holding the whole task architecture long enough to execute every part.
This is why some students lose marks even when they know the subject content. They answer only one half of a two-part question, ignore a word such as except, use the wrong source, exceed a stated limit, or complete the main action but forget the checking condition.
Task language is the operating system of schoolwork. If the learner misreads the instructions, correct knowledge can still produce the wrong output.

The Hidden Problem: Students Read for Topic and Miss the Task
A learner sees the words recycling programme and immediately starts writing everything they know about recycling. But the actual question may ask:
Using the poster and the table, explain two reasons why the school’s recycling programme improved in Term 2.
The task contains several jobs:
- Use two sources: poster + table.
- Explain, not merely list.
- Give two reasons.
- Focus on improvement.
- Focus on Term 2.
The student’s background knowledge may be useful, but it is not the task.

1. Command Words Tell the Student What to Do With Knowledge

Schools and subjects may use command words slightly differently, so students should also learn the local classroom meaning. The important habit is to treat the command as a thinking instruction.
2. Count the Jobs Before Answering
Words such as two, three, both, each and one control completeness.
“Give two reasons and one example for each” requires four pieces of content: Reason 1 + Example 1 + Reason 2 + Example 2.
Students should mark the count before they begin writing.
3. And Can Hide More Than One Action
“Describe the problem and explain how the character solved it” contains two different jobs. A student who only describes the problem has not completed the task even if that description is excellent.
Circle each command verb separately.
4. Source Words Control Where the Answer Comes From
Instructions may say:
- according to the passage;
- using the chart;
- from paragraph 3;
- based on both sources;
- using your own experience;
- refer to the picture.
These phrases define evidence ownership. A correct fact from memory can still fail if the question requires evidence from the passage.
5. Conditions Change Which Rule Applies
Conditional language includes if, when, unless, provided that, only if. For example:
If you choose Option B, give one reason from the chart.
The reason is required only for Option B. Students should attach the condition directly to the action it controls.
6. Constraint Words Are Small but Dangerous
- only;
- except;
- not;
- no more than;
- at least;
- between;
- without;
- from the list;
- in complete sentences.
These words narrow acceptable answers. Missing one can reverse the task.
7. Except Requires Inhibiting the Obvious Answer
Questions containing except or not often produce avoidable errors because students recognise a true statement and select it immediately. The learner must hold the negative condition while evaluating each option.
A simple repair is to rewrite the task positively: “Find the one option that does not belong.”
8. Sequence Matters When Later Steps Depend on Earlier Ones
Consider:
- Read the article.
- Choose its main idea.
- Find two details supporting that main idea.
- Write a summary using the main idea and details.
Trying to write the summary before choosing the main idea makes later decisions unstable. Some tasks have genuine dependencies.
9. Long Instructions Can Be Compressed Into an Execution Checklist
A student should not keep rereading a dense paragraph of instructions from the beginning. Convert it into a short action map:
read both → choose 2 similarities → 1 difference → evidence from each → complete sentences
The checklist is not a replacement for the original instruction. It is a working representation of it.
10. Output Form Is Part of the Task
The content may be correct but the form wrong. The task may require:
- a sentence;
- a paragraph;
- a table;
- a labelled diagram;
- bullet points;
- a quotation;
- a short oral response;
- a message to a specific reader.
Students should mark the output form before drafting.
11. Word Limits Change Selection
If a response must be brief, the learner needs stronger selection. A 30-word answer cannot contain every interesting detail. Identify the smallest evidence set that fully answers the question.
Word limits are not only restrictions. They are prioritisation tasks.
12. Multi-Source Instructions Need Source Ownership
“Use the poster to identify the event and the table to choose the best time” assigns different jobs to different sources. Students should write A/B or source labels beside the action map.
This reduces the common error of taking the right type of information from the wrong source.
13. Question Words Also Signal Information Type
- Who? participant;
- What? event, object, idea or definition;
- When? time;
- Where? place;
- Why? reason or cause;
- How? method, process or explanation;
- Which? selection from alternatives.
This basic layer remains useful even in more complex questions because it helps students identify the information slot before elaborating.
14. Evidence Words Require a Bridge
“Support your answer with evidence” does not mean copy a nearby sentence. The selected detail must support the exact claim. Students should be able to explain the bridge: “This detail supports my answer because…”
15. Compare Means Use One Shared Basis
When a task says compare, the student should identify the comparison dimension. Compare purpose with purpose, cost with cost, character response with character response. Two unrelated observations do not form a comparison.
16. Explain Means Make the Relationship Visible
“The river flooded because there was rain” may be too shallow if the task expects how the rainfall caused the water level to rise. Explanation often needs mechanism or causal detail.
17. Checklists Should Be Short Enough to Run
A 15-item checklist can become another task to forget. Use only the critical constraints. A good working checklist might be:
- 2 reasons?
- both sources?
- why explained?
- complete sentences?
The checklist should reduce cognitive load, not add to it.
18. Final Checking Must Return to the Original Instruction
Students often check spelling and punctuation but never compare the answer with the question again. The final task check should ask:
- Did I answer the command?
- Did I complete every required part?
- Did I use the correct source?
- Did I obey every condition and limit?
- Is the output in the required form?
Only after these are secure should surface proofreading become the final pass.
Worked Example: Turning a Dense Task Into an Action Map
Task: “Using information from the passage and the bar chart, explain two reasons why more students joined the reading programme in June than in May. Support each reason with one relevant detail.”
Action map:
- Target = June increase compared with May.
- Need = 2 reasons.
- Sources = passage + bar chart.
- For each reason = explanation + 1 relevant detail.
- Check = both reasons actually explain increase.
The answer becomes easier because the student has converted language into operations.
Worked Example: The Danger of One Small Constraint
Question: “Which statement is not supported by paragraph 4?”
A student may select the first statement that is clearly supported because recognition triggers too early. The repair is to mark NOT, then test each option as “supported / supported / not supported”. The negative condition must remain active until the choice is complete.

A First-Principles Teaching Method
1. Strip the content away
Give instructions using familiar topics so the student can focus on task structure rather than subject difficulty.
2. Mark commands, counts, sources and constraints separately
Use four symbols or annotation styles. The learner begins to see instructions as structured objects.
3. Convert to an execution checklist
Long sentence → short action map.
4. Change one condition
Change “two reasons” to “three”, “passage” to “chart”, or “compare” to “explain”. The student must update the plan rather than reuse the previous response.
5. Fade the annotation
Move from coloured marking to mental parsing as control improves.

This student frequently misses one part of a question or misreads not, except, two, both. Use short instructions, explicit annotation and immediate completion checks.
The stabilisation pathway
