Information Becomes Easier to Remember When the Reader Can See Its Architecture
Primary 4 nonfiction becomes harder not only because the vocabulary grows, but because information is organised through larger patterns. One text describes a habitat. Another explains a process in sequence. Another shows cause and effect. Another compares two systems. Another begins with a problem and develops one or more solutions.
A student who reads sentence by sentence may understand every line but still lose the whole passage. Text-structure reading gives the learner a map.
Good nonfiction reading asks not only, “What facts are here?” but also, “How has the writer arranged the facts so the larger idea can be understood?”

The Hidden Problem: Students Collect Facts Without Building a Model
A student can underline five correct facts and still fail to explain the passage. The missing step is relationship. Which details describe the same thing? Which events form a sequence? Which cause produces which effect? Which two items are being compared? Which details belong to the problem and which belong to the solution?
Once relationships become visible, facts stop behaving like separate pieces.

1. Description Organises Features Around One Subject
A descriptive informational text may explain what a rainforest contains, how a machine is built or what features define an animal. The details do not necessarily form a time sequence. They belong together because they describe different parts or qualities of the same subject.
A useful summary frame is: “The text describes X by explaining A, B and C.”
2. Sequence Organises Information by Order
Sequence is common in processes, instructions, historical events and life cycles. The reader needs to know what happens first, what follows and whether any stage depends on an earlier one.
Sequence words help, but order can also be shown through dates, numbered steps or the logic of the process itself.
3. Cause–Effect Explains Why Something Happens
Cause–effect texts connect conditions, actions or events with consequences. “Heavy rainfall raised the river level, so water spread onto the floodplain.”
Students must distinguish cause from simple sequence. One event happening before another does not prove it caused the second.
4. One Cause Can Produce Several Effects
A drought may reduce water supply, damage crops and increase fire risk. The reader should build a branching model rather than assume every passage contains one neat cause and one neat result.
5. Several Causes Can Combine
A traffic delay might result from roadworks, rain and a collision. Informational reading becomes more mature when students can hold more than one contributing cause.
6. Compare–Contrast Needs a Shared Basis
Two things can be compared meaningfully only when the reader knows the dimension: size, purpose, cost, habitat, method, speed, structure or another shared feature.
“A whale is larger, while a dolphin uses echolocation” mixes size and ability. Both facts may be correct, but the comparison is weak because the dimensions do not match.
7. Comparison Tables Can Make Structure Visible

The table is not merely a note-taking tool. It forces the reader to compare on matched dimensions.
8. Problem–Solution Begins With a Gap
The text identifies something that is not working, not available or not safe enough, then presents one or more responses.
A useful model is:
problem → proposed response → evidence/result → remaining limitation
More advanced texts may compare several solutions rather than present one final answer.
9. Signal Words Are Clues, Not Proof
The word because strongly suggests cause, but a passage can explain cause without using that word. The word however signals contrast locally, but the whole passage may still have a different dominant structure.
Students should use signal words as evidence, then verify the paragraph relationships.
10. A Passage Can Contain More Than One Structure
An article may begin by describing mangroves, then explain how their roots reduce erosion through cause–effect, then compare protected and unprotected coastlines.
The reader should identify the structure of individual sections and then ask what structure dominates the whole text.
11. Paragraph Jobs Reveal Structure
Label each paragraph with a short job: describe feature, explain cause, give example, compare result, present solution. The sequence of jobs often reveals the text’s architecture.
12. Structure Helps Prediction
If the writer introduces a problem, the reader can expect some response or solution. If two systems are introduced together, a comparison may follow. Prediction is stronger when it comes from structure rather than guessing content.
13. Structure Helps Summarising
A summary should preserve the text’s main relationships. A cause–effect text should not become a list of facts. A compare–contrast text should preserve the matched comparison. A problem–solution text should keep the problem and response linked.
14. Structure Helps Question Answering
If a question asks “Why?”, cause–effect sections are likely to contain useful evidence. If it asks “How are X and Y different?”, comparison sections matter. Knowing the structure reduces rereading time.
15. Structure Helps Writing Too
Students who can recognise structures become better at producing them. A clear explanation requires cause or sequence. An opinion may use problem–solution. A report may use description plus comparison.
Worked Example: One Topic, Different Structures
Topic: school garden.
- Description: explains beds, tools, plants and layout.
- Sequence: explains how seedlings are planted and cared for.
- Cause–effect: explains how shade affects soil moisture.
- Compare–contrast: compares raised beds with ground planting.
- Problem–solution: explains how the school reduced pest damage.
The topic stays the same. The architecture changes the reader’s job.

- Read one short paragraph.
- Ask what relationship holds the details together.

The repair pathway
This student reads one sentence at a time and loses paragraph meaning. Use short passages and visual organisers before requiring written summaries.
The stabilisation pathway
This student identifies structure but cannot use it to answer or summarise. Focus on transferring the structure into note-making and evidence selection.
The extension pathway
This student can analyse mixed structures, identify dominant versus supporting organisation and explain why one structure suits a writer’s purpose better than another.
