When Two Sources Must Become One Understanding
Primary 4 students increasingly meet questions where information is distributed across a paragraph, table, chart, map, caption, poster or second passage. Each source may make sense on its own, yet the task cannot be answered fully until the learner combines them.
This is synthesis. It is not simply copying one fact from Source A and another from Source B. The student must identify the shared question, keep source ownership clear, decide whether the information agrees, differs or complements, and then build a new statement that is supported by both.
Synthesis begins when separate sources stop being separate answers and start becoming evidence for one larger idea.

A More Important Reading Shift Than It First Appears
Single-source reading asks the learner to build one coherent model. Multi-source reading adds another layer: the student must build more than one model and then manage the relationship between them.
That relationship may be:
- agreement;
- difference;
- cause plus effect;
- problem plus solution;
- general statement plus example;
- claim plus data;
- map plus route description;
- text explanation plus diagram;
- two partial views of the same topic.
The student is no longer only comprehending. The student is coordinating information.
The Hidden Problem: Source Ownership Collapses
One of the most common multi-source errors is not misunderstanding the information itself. It is forgetting where the information came from.
A student reads that Text A says a park opens at 7 a.m. and a timetable in Source B shows the first bus arrives at 7.25 a.m. Later, the student may remember both details but no longer remember which source controls opening time and which controls transport.
When ownership disappears, comparison and checking become unreliable.
Before two sources can be integrated, each source must first be understood well enough to remain itself.

1. Build Source A Before Looking Across
Identify Source A’s topic, main idea, purpose and useful evidence. If it is a chart, read title, labels and units. If it is prose, identify paragraph jobs. If it is a map, decode the key and route relationships.
Write one short source note: “A explains why the wetland is important.”
2. Build Source B Separately
Do the same for Source B. Keep the labels visible. “B shows bird counts at three observation points.”
Only after both source models are stable should the student ask how they connect.
3. Name the Shared Target
The sources may contain much more information than the question needs. The shared target narrows selection.
If the question asks, “Which observation point would be best for someone hoping to see the greatest variety of birds, and why?”, the relevant target is bird variety by location. Other details about opening hours or weather may be true but irrelevant.
4. Match Like With Like
Comparison only works when the dimensions match. If Source A gives percentage change and Source B gives total number, the student may need to transform or explain before comparing. If one source explains purpose and another gives evidence, the relationship is support rather than direct comparison.
5. Sources Can Complement Rather Than Agree
One source may explain why mangrove roots reduce erosion. Another may show a photograph or diagram of the root network. These sources do not repeat the same information. They contribute different parts to the same understanding.
Synthesis should preserve that division of labour.
6. Text and Visual Sources Require Translation
A visual source usually stores relationships spatially rather than in full sentences. The student may need to convert “tallest bar at Site C” into “Site C recorded the highest number of observations.” Only then can that evidence be integrated with prose.
7. Use Evidence From Both Sources
A synthesis answer should normally reveal both evidence streams. If only one source appears in the explanation, the second source may not have been integrated.
Useful frame:
Source A explains that…, while Source B shows that…. Together, they suggest…
The frame is temporary support. The goal is eventually to write the relationship naturally.
8. Do Not Merge Contradictions Into False Agreement
If Source A says the event begins at 9 a.m. and Source B lists 9.30 a.m., the student should not average the times or choose whichever is convenient. The difference is itself important evidence.
Ask whether the sources refer to different dates, categories, editions or conditions. If the conflict cannot be resolved, preserve it.
9. Check Dates and Definitions
Two sources may appear to disagree because they use different time periods or definitions. One chart may count all visitors; another may count only student visitors. Before declaring conflict, check scope.
10. Synthesis Can Build a Stronger Explanation
Suppose Text A explains that shade reduces evaporation from soil. A diagram in Source B shows plants placed under shade retaining more moisture over time. The two sources together support a mechanism + evidence explanation.
The integrated answer is stronger because it connects why with what was observed.
11. Synthesis Can Build a Recommendation
Recommendation tasks often combine conditions. A timetable may show arrival times, a map may show distance, and a notice may show opening hours. The student must combine all three without dropping one constraint.
The best option is the one that survives every relevant condition, not the one that looks best on the first source.
12. Synthesis Should Not Increase Certainty Without Evidence
If one source says “may improve” and another gives one example, the integrated answer should not become “always improves”. Combining sources can increase support, but it does not automatically justify absolute language.

A First-Principles Teaching Method
1. Fence the sources
Use only two short sources at first. Make ownership visible with A/B columns.
2. Build each source model aloud
Student explains the main idea and strongest evidence before comparison begins.
3. Name the relationship
Agreement? Difference? Mechanism + evidence? Problem + solution? General statement + example?
4. Integrate one sentence
Require one sentence that genuinely needs both sources.
5. Change one source surface
Replace prose with a chart, map or table while keeping the same underlying relationship. This tests transfer.
Three Primary 4 Student Pathways
The repair pathway
This student loses ownership or misreads visual evidence. Work with two short sources and explicit A/B labelling before asking for full written synthesis.
The stabilisation pathway
This student understands both sources but produces two separate summaries. Focus on naming the relationship and writing one integrated claim.
The extension pathway
This student can handle multiple sources and should work with changing units, partial disagreement, conditions and mixed text/visual evidence.

- Read Source A and write one main-idea note.
- Read Source B and write one main-idea note.
- State the shared target.
- Find one evidence point from each.
- Name the relationship.

- Repeat with one source converted into a visual.
Common Error: Two Summaries Joined by “And”
“Source A says X and Source B says Y” may still be source stacking. Add the relationship: why do X and Y belong together?
Common Error: Visual Evidence Is Described Vaguely
“The graph is higher” is weak. Name the category, value and comparison basis.
Common Error: One Source Is Treated as Decoration
If a second source is present, ask what new constraint or evidence it contributes. The answer should reveal why it was needed.

Synthesis at Primary 4 should remain evidence-calibrated. Students are learning to combine information, not to make unsupported expert judgements about source reliability. Where formal assessment instructions differ, follow the student’s school requirements.
