Wait, What? Explaining Is Not Listing Facts
Primary 4 students often know many relevant facts about a topic but still struggle to explain it. The problem is structure. An explanation must show how or why something happens by connecting causes, stages, mechanisms and results. A list of correct facts can still leave the reader unable to follow the process.
Explanatory writing is therefore organised around relationships. The writer selects only the information needed to answer the question and arranges it so that each step makes the next one understandable.
An explanation succeeds when the reader can follow the mechanism, not merely recognise the facts.

1. Start With the Exact Question
“Write about evaporation” is broad. “Explain how evaporation happens” has a clearer job. The writer now needs to show what happens to liquid water, what provides energy and what change occurs.
Before drafting, rewrite the task mentally as one sentence: “The reader needs to understand how/why…”
2. Build the Mechanism Before the Paragraph
Use a small chain:
cause → change → result
For a process, use stages: start condition → step 1 → step 2 → outcome. For a comparison explanation, use shared basis → difference → consequence.
This prevents the paragraph from becoming a fact dump.
3. Cause and Sequence Are Not the Same
“The rain fell. The river rose.” gives sequence. “Because heavy rain added large amounts of water to the river, the water level rose” gives cause. Explanatory writing often requires the second relationship.
Students should ask whether one event merely came before another or actually helped produce it.
4. Use Connectors to Make Logic Visible

Connector choice should follow logic. A formal-sounding connector is not useful if it changes the relationship.
5. Technical Vocabulary Should Increase Precision
Subject terms such as evaporation, condensation, friction, habitat, erosion are valuable because they name precise concepts. The writer should use them accurately and explain unfamiliar terms when the audience may not know them.
Replacing a precise subject term with a vague phrase can weaken the explanation. Precision matters more than avoiding repeated terminology.
6. Define Before You Depend on a Term
If the reader needs to understand a term before the explanation makes sense, define it early. A short embedded definition is often enough: “Condensation is the change of water vapour into liquid water.”
Do not overload the opening with every definition. Define only what the mechanism requires.
7. Examples Support the Explanation; They Do Not Replace It
An example can make a mechanism concrete. If explaining friction, a bicycle brake is useful. But “When we use bicycle brakes, the bike slows down” is not yet a full explanation. The writer still needs to explain how friction between surfaces resists motion.
8. Diagrams Can Help Plan the Writing
A flowchart or labelled diagram can make missing steps visible before drafting. Students can then convert each arrow or stage into one or more sentences.
This is especially useful for cyclical processes, systems and cause chains.
9. Paragraphs Should Group Related Stages
A longer explanation may use one paragraph for the starting condition, one for the main mechanism and one for the result or significance. Paragraph breaks should follow changes in explanatory job, not arbitrary length.
10. Pronouns Must Keep Technical Reference Clear
When several objects or processes are active, repeated nouns can be safer than ambiguous pronouns. “It then causes it to move” is difficult to follow. Name the relevant object or process again when clarity is at risk.
11. Explanation Needs Appropriate Certainty
“Always causes” is stronger than “can cause”. “Usually” is different from “sometimes”. Preserve the degree of certainty supported by the source or taught concept.
Precision includes knowing how certain the explanation is allowed to be.
12. The Best Revision Question Is: Where Would the Reader Ask ‘Why?’
Read the explanation and stop whenever one sentence seems to jump to the next. If the reader could reasonably ask “Why does that happen?” or “How does that cause the next stage?”, a causal link may be missing.
Worked Example: Fact List to Explanation
Fact list: Mangroves have roots. Water moves through them. Sediment is trapped. Coasts can erode.
Explanation: Mangrove roots slow water moving through the forest. As the water slows, some suspended sediment settles around the roots instead of being carried away. By trapping sediment and reducing water movement, mangroves can help reduce erosion along parts of the shoreline.
The second version makes the mechanism visible.
Common Error: Starting With Every Fact Known
Background knowledge is useful only when it serves the explanatory question. Remove facts that do not contribute to the mechanism.
Common Error: Using Sequence Words for Cause
“Next” tells order, not reason. If the relationship is causal, make the cause visible.
Common Error: Giving a Definition Instead of an Explanation
A definition tells what something is. An explanation tells how or why it works or changes. Many tasks need both, but they are different jobs.
