Wait, What? Nonfiction Is Meant to Be Navigated, Not Always Read Straight Through

A Primary 3 learner opens a nonfiction page and begins at the first word, even when the question asks for one specific fact hidden under a heading, diagram or glossary term. This is not always a reading weakness. It may be a navigation weakness: the learner has not yet learned that nonfiction pages are built with search tools.

Headings, subheadings, captions, labels, diagrams, maps, bold words, sidebars, glossaries and indexes are not decorations around the “real text”. They are part of the information system. Skilled readers use them to predict, locate, interpret and verify.

Before reading everything, ask where the answer is most likely to live.

1. Headings Tell the Reader the Large Topic of a Section

A heading such as How Mangroves Survive Salt Water narrows what the section will explain. Before reading, the learner can predict likely ideas: salt, roots, leaves, water and survival.

2. Subheadings Divide a Large Topic Into Searchable Parts

  • Roots Above the Mud
  • Leaves and Salt
  • Animals Around the Trees

If the question asks how leaves deal with salt, the second subheading is the best starting point. Efficient reading begins with matching question to structure.

3. Captions Explain What to Notice in an Image

A photograph can show many things. A caption tells the reader which information matters. “A mangrove seedling growing beside exposed roots” directs attention to the relationship the writer wants the image to support.

4. Labels Name Parts

A labelled diagram of a flower may name petal, stem, leaf and root. The learner should trace which label points to which feature before answering. Guessing from position can cause avoidable errors.

5. Diagrams Show Relationships Better Than Lists

A process diagram can show stage order. A cross-section can show inside/outside relationships. A system diagram can show how parts connect. Ask: “What relationship is the diagram making visible?”

6. Bold or Highlighted Terms Signal Vocabulary Importance

Bold text often indicates a key term, but the bolding itself does not provide the definition. Look nearby for explanation, examples, glossary support or a diagram label.

7. Sidebars Add Supporting Information Without Interrupting the Main Flow

A sidebar may provide a quick fact, definition, example or extension. It can support the topic without being essential to the main explanation. The reader must decide whether the current question requires it.

8. Glossaries Resolve Important Terms

A glossary usually defines selected subject words used in the text. It is especially useful when the meaning cannot be inferred with enough confidence from context alone.

Glossary use should be targeted: identify the exact term, find it alphabetically, read the matching definition, then return to the original sentence.

9. An Index Helps Locate Topics Across a Book

If a book’s index lists mangroves, 18–21, 36, the reader knows where the topic appears. The index does not answer the question; it routes the reader to likely pages.

10. Keywords Should Come From the Question

Question: “How do mangrove roots help the tree survive in muddy ground?” Useful keywords: mangrove roots, muddy ground, survive. Less useful keyword: tree, because it is too broad.

11. Search Terms Can Be Rephrased

A text may use muddy soil while the question says muddy ground. A rigid exact-word search can fail. Skilled readers recognise related wording.

12. Read Locally, Then Reconnect Globally

Once the relevant section is found, read enough surrounding text to understand the answer. Do not lift one line without checking what came before or after. Navigation gets you to the evidence; comprehension still decides what the evidence means.

13. Visual and Verbal Evidence Should Agree

If a diagram arrow points from Stage 1 to Stage 2 but the paragraph appears to describe the stages in reverse, check labels and orientation carefully. Strong readers compare sources rather than assuming the first one noticed must be correct.

14. A Table of Contents and an Index Do Different Jobs

A table of contents shows the book’s large organisational structure. An index routes to specific topics, often across several chapters. The learner should choose the tool that matches the search job.

15. Text Features Can Support Main Idea

Headings and subheadings often reveal the hierarchy of ideas. Captions, diagrams and sidebars can signal which details matter. This makes text-feature reading useful for main-idea work, not only fact finding.

16. Efficient Navigation Is Not Skimming Carelessly

The goal is not to avoid reading. The goal is to allocate attention intelligently. A learner should know when to scan headings, when to inspect a diagram, when to read closely and when to return to the whole passage.

Original Nonfiction Page Simulation

Title: How a School Rain Garden Works

Subheading: Where the Water Goes. Rainwater from a nearby roof flows through a shallow channel into a planted area. The soil and roots slow the water before it continues into the drain.

Caption: A shallow channel guides roof water towards the planted basin.

Diagram labels: roof downpipe → shallow channel → planted basin → overflow drain.

Sidebar: Why Slow Water? Fast-moving water can carry loose soil and litter. Slowing the flow gives some water time to soak into the ground.

Glossary: basin — a low area that can collect water; overflow — extra water that moves out after a space is full.

Model Navigation Questions

  1. Where should you look first to find the route water follows? The diagram labels, then the main paragraph for explanation.
  2. Where should you look to define basin? The glossary.
  3. Where should you look to understand why water is slowed? The sidebar titled “Why Slow Water?”
  4. What does the caption add? It identifies what the image is meant to show: the channel guiding roof water.

Explained Answer Principles

Items 1–10: headings name large section topics; subheadings divide them; captions tell readers what to notice in visuals; labels name parts; diagrams show relationships; bold terms flag importance; sidebars provide supporting information; glossaries define selected terms; indexes route to topics; contents pages show large book structure.

Items 11–15: question-derived keywords focus the search. Synonyms and rephrased terms may require flexible scanning. Local reading prevents decontextualised answers. Visual and written sources should be compared. Efficient scanning is a routing strategy, not a replacement for close comprehension.

Items 16–24: glossary for basin, diagram for route, sidebar for why slowing matters, caption for channel function. Slow water is a more useful keyword than garden for that question. Glossary supports but does not replace sentence context. Diagrams have boundaries. Cross-checking reduces interpretation errors.

Items 25–30: index locates all pages on a specific topic; contents helps choose a chapter. Headings reveal text hierarchy. Sidebars may be supplementary rather than central. Original questions and navigation plans should identify a likely feature, read locally, then verify against the wider text.

  • Reading every page linearly when the task asks for one fact.

Parent and Tutor Use

Choose a nonfiction book or safe educational page and ask the child to locate one fact without reading everything first. Require the learner to explain why a particular heading, caption, diagram, glossary or index was the best route. Then ask one question that requires close reading after the location step.

Primary 4 Bridge

Primary 4 nonfiction becomes denser and more multimodal. The useful bridge is a Primary 3 reader who can navigate efficiently without confusing fast location with shallow comprehension.
