Wait, What? A Corrected Worksheet Does Not Prove the Error Is Fixed

A Primary 3 child can copy the correct answer, understand the explanation and still make the same mistake the next week. Correction and repair are not the same. Correction tells the learner what should have happened. Repair changes the decision process so the learner is more likely to succeed when the surface changes.

This is why marked work should become evidence. Every repeated error is a clue about where the language system may be breaking: question interpretation, vocabulary, grammar, reference, sequence, retrieval, paragraph structure, listening, oral development or self-checking.

The useful question is not only “What was wrong?” It is “What was the earliest decision that made this answer become wrong?”

Why Marks Alone Are Too Compressed

A mark records an outcome. It does not tell us the mechanism that produced it. Two children can lose one mark on the same question for different reasons.

Layer 1: Classify Before Correcting

Do not treat every wrong answer as “careless”. Give the error a working category:

  • task/question control;
  • reading meaning;
  • evidence/inference;
  • vocabulary;
  • grammar;
  • reference/cohesion;
  • sequence/cause;
  • writing organisation;
  • retrieval;
  • time/attention;
  • prompt dependence;
  • checking failure.

The category is provisional. Its job is to guide the next question.

Layer 2: Trace Upstream

Start at the visible error and move backwards one decision at a time.

  1. What answer did the child give?
  2. What did the child think the question meant?
  3. Which part of the text or rule did the child use?
  4. Was that information understood correctly?
  5. Was the information available without prompting?
  6. Did the child know how to shape the final response?

Stop when you find the earliest useful repair point. Going further upstream is unnecessary if the earlier skill is already stable.

Worked Example 1: Comprehension Error

Question: “Why did Mei close the gate?”

Child’s answer: “She closed the gate.”

Visible error: incomplete reason.

Upstream check: Ask the child to explain what why means. If the child says “what happened”, the first weak link is question control, not passage comprehension.

Repair: Contrast two questions: “What did Mei do?” versus “Why did Mei do it?” Then test the distinction on a different passage.

Layer 3: Explanation Makes the Repair Explicit

After correcting, ask the child to explain the change. “Because teacher said so” is not enough.

Better explanation: “I changed walks to walked because the sentence says yesterday, so the main action is in the past.”

The explanation gives the learner a rule that can be retrieved later.

Layer 4: Repair One Pattern, Not the Whole Page

Too many corrections can hide the important pattern. If tense is the repeated problem, select a few examples and repair tense first. If pronoun reference is causing comprehension errors, focus there before correcting every spelling mistake.

Prioritisation is part of teaching. The loudest page is not always the most important weakness.

Layer 5: Delayed Retrieval

A repair should return after a delay. The child should not have the model answer beside them.

  • same day: explain the correction;
  • two days later: retrieve the rule or process;
  • one week later: solve a new example;
  • later in the month: look for the same pattern inside authentic work.

The spacing does not need to be exact. The principle is that knowledge should survive after the answer has disappeared from view.

Worked Example 2: Vocabulary Repair

Child chooses excited for a sentence where a character finds a missing wallet after worrying for an hour.

Correction: relieved is more precise.

Repair network:

  • relieved = worry decreases after a problem ends;
  • contrast = anxious/worried;
  • common phrase = feel relieved;
  • new context = “She felt relieved when the doctor said the injury was minor.”

Delayed return: ask for a word describing someone whose worry has just ended.

Layer 6: Change the Surface

Repeating the same question can produce memory, not transfer. Change names, topic, sentence order, text type or wording while preserving the underlying skill.

If the child learned why = reason from a story, test a why question in an informational passage. If agreement was repaired in a worksheet, test it in composition.

Layer 7: Prompt Reduction

A child may produce the correct answer because an adult supplies the critical cue every time. Reduce support deliberately.

Layer 8: Self-Correction Must Be Specific

“Check your work” is too vague for many Primary 3 learners. Give a bounded check.

  • Check every main verb for time.
  • Circle every pronoun and identify what it refers to.
  • Underline the question word and verify the answer job.
  • Read the first sentence of each paragraph and name its job.
  • Find one vague noun or verb and make it more precise.

As the child matures, these external checks can become internal habits.

Layer 9: Error Logs Should Stay Small

A useful Primary 3 error log does not need fifty categories. Track only repeated patterns that deserve attention.

The log should guide teaching, not become another worksheet.

Layer 10: Distinguish Knowledge Failure From Execution Failure

Ask whether the child can explain the rule or process when calm and untimed.

  • If the child cannot explain it, the knowledge may be missing.
  • If the child explains it but cannot use it in work, transfer may be weak.
  • If it works untimed but fails under time, retrieval or checking may be the issue.
  • If it works only after a cue, prompt dependence may be present.

These differences matter because the repair is different.

Worked Example 3: Grammar Under Load

The child correctly answers isolated subject-verb agreement questions but writes “The boys was waiting” in composition.

Diagnosis: the rule is recognised, but it is not stable while ideas and writing load are active.

Repair:

  1. Repair the sentence.
  2. Explain subject-verb relationship.
  3. Generate three original plural-subject sentences.
  4. Write a short paragraph.
  5. Circle plural subjects and check verbs.
  6. Repeat later on a different topic without the circle cue.

Worked Example 4: Writing Structure

Child writes a long composition where the main problem is solved in two sentences.

Visible error: weak pacing.

First weak link may be planning rather than sentence quality. Ask the child to identify situation, pressure, choice and consequence. If those were never planned, sentence-level editing will not fix the structure.

The Four Return Tests

  1. Immediate return: can the child explain the correction?
  2. Delayed return: can the child retrieve the process later?
  3. Changed-surface return: can the process survive new content?
  4. Integrated return: can the process survive inside real reading, writing, listening or speaking?

Common Error-Analysis Traps

  • Calling every mistake careless.
  • Showing the answer before asking what the child thought.
  • Correcting ten different patterns at once.
  • Assuming understanding during correction means retention.
  • Repeating the exact same item and mistaking memory for transfer.
  • Leaving adult prompts unchanged forever.
  • Using an error log so large that no priority is visible.
  • Checking only worksheet performance and not authentic writing or speaking.

Keep one recurring question: “What made this answer become wrong?” Then ask, “How will you recognise the same problem next time?” These questions move correction from the page into the learner’s decision system.

The Primary 4 Bridge

Primary 4 increases complexity, so unresolved repeated errors become more expensive. The strongest bridge is a Primary 3 learner who already knows how to inspect an error, repair a pattern and verify that the correction survives without constant adult rescue.
