Wait, What? Two Sources Do Not Become One Answer Just Because They Share a Topic

A Primary 2 learner may read a short paragraph and inspect a picture, chart, label or diagram, yet still treat the sources separately. Synthesis asks for something harder: hold the meaning of each source, identify what each contributes, find where they support or extend one another, and build one accurate explanation without mixing facts carelessly.

Synthesis is not collecting everything. It is making different pieces of evidence cooperate around one question.

Layer 1: Build Each Source Separately First

Source A may be a short paragraph. Source B may be a labelled diagram. Before combining them, the learner should be able to explain each source on its own.

Example:

  • Text: “A seed needs enough water and suitable warmth before germination can begin.”
  • Diagram: shows root emerging first, then shoot growing upward.

These sources do not repeat exactly the same thing. One gives conditions; the other shows sequence.

Layer 2: Name the Shared Question

Question: “How does a seed begin to grow?”

The question becomes the container. Facts that do not help answer it should not enter the final synthesis.

Layer 4: Match Evidence Before Combining It

Suppose a text says “The library closes at 5 p.m.” while a timetable shows activities ending at 4:30, 5:00 and 5:15. A synthesis question about whether every pupil can visit the library after activities requires matching the closing time with each activity end time.

The answer is not found in either source alone. It is produced by matching the evidence.

Layer 5: Repetition and Extension Are Different

  • Repetition: both sources show that the seed needs water.
  • Extension: one source adds warmth; another shows root direction.

A strong synthesis preserves the new contribution rather than writing the same fact twice.

Layer 6: Do Not Force Agreement

If one source says the activity begins at 3 p.m. and another says 3:30 p.m., do not quietly choose one. The learner should recognise that the sources disagree and avoid pretending certainty.

Primary 2 language can stay simple: “The two sources give different starting times, so the correct time needs to be checked.”

Layer 7: Images Need Evidence Language Too

Weak: “The picture shows it.”

Stronger: “The diagram shows the root growing downward while the shoot grows upward.”

The learner should name the visible evidence rather than refer to “the picture” vaguely.

Layer 8: One Source May Answer One Part, Another Source Another Part

Question: “Which route should Amir take, and why?”

  • Map: shows Route A is shorter.
  • Notice: says Route A is closed.

The correct synthesis is not “Take Route A because it is shorter.” The notice changes the decision. Amir should take the available route even if it is longer.

Synthesis often depends on which source changes the meaning of the other.

Layer 9: Source Ownership Should Remain Visible

Useful language:

  • “The text explains…”
  • “The chart shows…”
  • “The diagram adds…”
  • “Both sources show…”
  • “Only the notice states…”

This prevents accidental mixing.

Layer 10: The Final Answer Should Be Smaller Than the Sources

The learner should not copy every fact. The final response should contain only the information required by the question, while preserving the important relationship among sources.

Worked Synthesis 1: Seed Growth

Text: seed needs water and warmth.

Diagram: root emerges downward, shoot grows upward.

Question: How does germination begin?

Possible answer: “Germination begins when the seed receives enough water and suitable warmth. The root then starts to grow downward while the shoot grows upward.”

Worked Synthesis 2: Library Decision

Notice: library closes at 5 p.m.

Timetable: art ends 4:30; football ends 5:15.

Question: Which pupil can still visit the library after the activity?

Answer: “The pupil in art can still visit because the activity ends at 4:30 p.m., before the library closes. The football pupil cannot go afterwards because football ends after 5 p.m.”

Worked Synthesis 3: Route Choice

Map: Route A is shorter than Route B.

Notice: Route A closed for repairs.

Answer: “Route B should be used because Route A is closed, even though Route A is shorter.”
