Wait, What? A Wrong Answer Is the End of the Question—but the Beginning of the Diagnosis
Primary 1 errors are often corrected very quickly. The adult points to the right word, supplies the spelling, changes the verb or rewrites the sentence. The page becomes correct, but the learner may not know what went wrong, why the correction works or what to do when the same relationship appears in a different task tomorrow.
A wrong answer can come from many places. The child may have misread the instruction, failed to decode one important word, misunderstood vocabulary, lost pronoun reference, forgotten part of a sentence, guessed too early, known the answer orally but failed to write it, or corrected the problem once but not stored the new pattern.
The goal of correction is not a clean worksheet. The goal is a learner who understands the error well enough to avoid, notice or repair it when the surface changes.

A useful Primary 1 error-learning cycle is:
NOTICE → EXPLAIN THE ORIGINAL THINKING → FIND THE FIRST WEAK LINK → REPAIR → EXPLAIN THE REPAIR → RETRIEVE → CHANGE THE SURFACE → RETURN LATER.
Only the last stages show whether correction became learning.

Marks Are Outputs, Not Diagnoses
A score tells us how many responses were accepted on one task. It does not explain the mechanism behind the errors. Two children who both score 7/10 can need completely different teaching.

The First Weak Link
When an answer fails, move one step upstream rather than immediately reteaching everything.
Question: “Why did Lina close the window?”
Child answers: “The window.”
Possible first check: does the child know that why asks for a reason? If not, the problem may be question language before comprehension of the passage itself.
Ask What the Child Thought
Instead of asking only, “Why is this wrong?”, ask:
- What did you think the question was asking?
- Which word made you choose this answer?
- What were you trying to say?
- How did you read this word?
- Which part were you unsure about?
The child’s explanation can reveal whether the error was random, systematic or caused by overload.
Error Type 1: Task Misunderstanding
Instruction: “Underline the word that tells you where the bird is.” Child circles the bird picture.
The child may know the location word but not the instruction language. Repair the task language: underline vs circle, word vs picture, where vs what.
Error Type 2: Knowledge Gap
Sentence: “The puppies ___ sleeping.” Child does not know whether to use is or are.
If the one/more-than-one relationship is not understood, teach it explicitly. Do not treat the error as mere inattention.
Error Type 3: Retrieval Failure
The child can explain the rule and answer correctly in isolation, but uses the wrong form during composition. The knowledge may exist but is not retrieved automatically under load.
Repair with short transfer tasks inside real writing rather than reteaching the whole rule from the beginning.
Error Type 4: Monitoring Failure
Text: “The goat stood beside the fence.” Child reads coat and continues even though the sentence no longer makes sense.
The issue may be self-monitoring. Teach the repair trigger: “Did that make sense?” Then return to print and check the letters.
Error Type 5: Working-Memory Overload
A child can follow each part of a two-step instruction separately but loses one when both are combined. The knowledge is present; the carrying load is the problem.
Use restatement, shorter chunks and gradual load increase.
Error Type 6: Surface Dependence
The child answers correctly when the worksheet looks familiar but fails when the topic, names or wording change. This suggests the learner memorised the surface pattern rather than the underlying relationship.
Transfer testing is the remedy.
Correction Is Not Learning Yet
After an adult shows the answer, the child can often repeat it immediately. That proves very little. The correction is still present in working memory.
A stronger sequence is:
- Repair the error.
- Explain why the repair works.
- Remove the model.
- Do one changed example.
- Return after a delay.
Self-Correction Starts with One Target
“Check your work” is too broad for many Primary 1 learners. Give one target:
- Check every sentence begins with a capital.
- Check is/are.
- Check the word because.
- Check who each he/she/it refers to.
- Check whether your answer matches where.
As independence grows, combine targets gradually.
The Prompt Ladder
- Wait: allow independent noticing.
- General prompt: “Check that sentence again.”
- Focused prompt: “Check the subject and verb.”
- Choice: “Is it is or are?”
- Model: show the relationship if necessary.
- Return: new example with less help.
Support should fade. A correct answer after a specific prompt is progress, but not yet independent control.
Retrieval: Can the Learner Produce the Repair Without the Model?
Retrieval means recalling and using knowledge without simply copying what is visible.
If the child learned because, close the book and ask for a sentence giving a reason. If the child corrected The dogs is…, give The children ___… If the child learned rain, ask for it later in a sentence or compare with train.
Delayed Return: Tomorrow Is More Informative Than Ten Seconds Later
Immediate success can be supported by recent memory. Delayed return tests whether the learning became retrievable.
A simple schedule can be:
- same lesson: changed example;
- next day: quick retrieval;
- later in the week: use inside reading or writing;
- later again: unseen transfer.
Transfer: Change the Surface, Keep the Relationship
Original: The boys are playing.
- Change noun: The puppies ___ sleeping.
- Change tense: Yesterday, the boys ___ playing.
- Change task: use the relationship in a composition sentence.
- Change mode: hear the sentence and correct it orally.
If the child can still apply the relationship, the learning is becoming portable.
Build a Small Error-Return Log
The log should contain only recurring, high-value patterns.

Retire an item when the child succeeds repeatedly. A good error log shrinks over time.

Question: “Where did Mira put the shoes?” Child answers: “Because they were wet.”
- Ask what where requires.
- Child identifies: a place.
- Return to evidence: beside the door.
- Changed example: “Where did Ben place the book?”
- Delayed return later.
Worked Example 2: Grammar Error
Error: The puppies is sleeping.
- Find subject: puppies.
- One or more than one? More than one.
- Repair: are.
- Explain: more than one puppy → are.
- Transfer: The kitten ___ sleeping.
Worked Example 3: Reading Error
Text: The goat stood beside the fence. Child reads coat.
- Ask whether the sentence makes sense.
- Child notices mismatch.
- Return to print.
- Check first letter and word pattern.
- Reread sentence.
- Transfer to another sentence containing goat.
Worked Example 4: Writing Error Under Load
Child spells because correctly in a spelling exercise but writes becos during composition.
Do not assume the word was never learned. Test it alone. If correct, the issue may be retrieval under composition load. Build a short return: write one sentence with because, then use it again in an unrelated task later.
Worked Example 5: Prompt Dependence
Child can answer inference questions only after the adult asks, “Which clue tells you?”
Next task: pause before prompting. If needed, use the general prompt “Check the passage.” Later, remove the prompt completely. The target is independent clue-seeking.

- Can the child reread for one target?
