Series ID: EDKS-BASIC-ZH-0084 · Lesson No.084 · C1-Direction Review and Independent Performance
C1 Review and Independent Performance | C1 复习与独立表现
C1-direction English is not a pile of advanced structures. It is the ability to keep meaning, evidence, register, inference and repair under control when tasks become demanding.
This lesson consolidates the C1-direction system developed through Lessons 073–083. It is a performance checkpoint, not formal certification.
这一课检查的是“独立表现”:面对陌生、密集、多来源、有争议的任务时,能不能仍然保持精确、连贯、可修复。

1. Performance before labels | 表现优先
Ask:
Can the learner handle an unfamiliar task with reasonable independence while preserving precision?
2. Green / Amber / Red | 绿黄红
- Green: stable under variation, density and challenge.
- Amber: succeeds with extra time or familiar content.
- Red: a core process breaks.
3. Dense listening | 高密度听力
Listen to 10–15 minutes of natural multi-speaker English.
Track:
- speaker positions
- stance strength
- source references
- implicit disagreement
- pragmatic meaning
- position changes
4. Listening inference discipline | 听力推断纪律
For every inference, state:
- words heard
- context
- confidence level
5. Do not mind-read | 不读心
Interpret communicative meaning, not hidden personality or motive.
6. Dense reading | 高密度阅读
Read 2,500–4,000 words across several related sources.
Map:
- claim
- evidence
- assumption
- framing
- scope
- limitation
- source role
7. Source stance | 来源立场
Use reporting verbs precisely:
- reports
- suggests
- argues
- claims
- acknowledges
- challenges
8. Preserve source distance | 保留来源距离
Do not make a cautious source sound certain—or a strong result sound weak.
9. Source-position matrix | 来源定位矩阵
| Source | Position | Evidence | Scope | Role |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | supports X | survey | adults | baseline |
| B | qualifies X | performance data | one organisation | limiter |
| C | offers Y | interviews | team settings | alternative mechanism |
10. Issue-based synthesis | 按议题综合
Organise notes and writing around the question, not source order.
11. Lexical bundles | 学术语块
Use recurring frames naturally:
- Taken together…
- One possible explanation is…
- The extent to which…
- In the absence of…
- What remains unclear is…
12. Avoid template dumping | 不堆模板
Every phrase must have a real discourse job.
13. Phraseology audit | 语块审计
Ask:
- Is the collocation natural?
- Is the phrase necessary?
- Does it match register?
14. Pragmatic listening | 语用听力
Recognise:
- indirect refusal
- understatement
- polite disagreement
- possible irony
- reformulation
- backchannels
15. Irony threshold | 反讽阈值
Require contextual mismatch, not tone alone.
16. Discussion under challenge | 被质疑时讨论
Hold a 15–20 minute discussion on a semi-unfamiliar issue.
17. Discussion requirements | 讨论要求
- define terms
- state provisional position
- use evidence
- ask questions
- respond to counterevidence
- reformulate
- revise if necessary
18. Reformulation language | 换说法
- Let me put that differently…
- What I mean more precisely is…
- I should qualify that…
19. Position revision | 修改立场
Given that evidence, I would narrow my claim to…
20. Analytical writing | 分析写作
Write 700–1,000 words with:
- clear central question
- criteria
- multi-source synthesis
- counterargument
- evidence weighting
- qualified conclusion
21. Introduction | 引言
Define question, scope and analytical criteria.
22. Body architecture | 主体架构
Each paragraph should have a necessary job.
23. Long-argument cohesion | 长篇衔接
Maintain:
- theme chains
- reference chains
- bridge sentences
- known→new progression
- return to central question
24. Reverse outline | 反向提纲
After drafting, write one sentence summarising the job of every paragraph.
25. Remove duplicated jobs | 删除重复段落任务
If two paragraphs do the same thing, merge or differentiate them.
26. Hedging precision | hedging 精度
Audit:
- may/might
- appears/seems
- likely
- clearly
- proves
27. Scope precision | 范围精度
Audit:
- population
- context
- time frame
- task type
- exceptions
28. Framing audit | 框架审计
Ask whether the same facts could reasonably be framed another way.
29. Assumption audit | 前提审计
Identify at least one assumption behind each major claim.
30. Reporting-verb audit | 转述动词审计
Check whether each verb accurately represents source force.
31. Collocation audit | 搭配审计
Advanced vocabulary with weak collocation is not advanced control.
32. Rhetorical-structure audit | 修辞结构审计
For inversion, clefts, nominalisation and reductions, ask:
What job is this doing?
33. Remove decorative complexity | 删除装饰性复杂
Prefer the simpler structure when it communicates better.
34. Register switching | 语体切换
Express the same core idea as:
- conversation
- professional email
- formal report
- public explanation
35. Register ≠ vocabulary difficulty | 语体不等于词难度
Formal English can still be plain and clear.
36. Independent tool use | 独立工具使用
Use dictionaries, corpora, reference works and digital tools strategically where permitted.
37. Independence = strategic support | 独立不等于不用工具
Independence means knowing when, why and how to use support.
38. Chinese support | 中文辅助
Use Chinese only where it solves a difficult conceptual problem. Keep routine analysis and output in English.
39. Time-pressure mission | 限时任务
Example 120-minute integrated task:
| 25 min | read/listen + notes |
| 15 min | source matrix + plan |
| 60 min | write 800 words |
| 20 min | audits + revision |
40. Reading-to-discussion transfer | 阅读→讨论
Use source positions as discussion material without reading prepared sentences aloud.
41. Discussion-to-writing transfer | 讨论→写作
Use objections raised in discussion to improve counterargument and qualification.
42. Writing-to-speaking transfer | 写作→口语
Reduce essay architecture to keywords and reasoning chains.
43. First weak link routing | 第一个弱点路由
| Break | Return |
|---|---|
| reporting verbs/source distance | 081 |
| phraseology/collocation | 082 |
| pragmatic listening | 083 |
| hedging | 077 |
| macro-cohesion | 078 |
| framing/assumptions | 079 |
| source positioning | 075 |
| rhetorical focus | 073–074 |
44. Do not restart everything | 不要从头重学
Repair the first weak link causing the integrated task to fail.
45. Green maintenance | 绿色能力维护
Use the skill under unfamiliar content and delay.
46. Amber pressure | 黄色能力加压
Vary:
- topic
- speaker
- register
- time limit
- source format
47. Red repair | 红色精准修复
Return to the owning lesson and rebuild from smaller tasks.
48. Reading practice | 阅读
Advanced language ability is often mistaken for structural complexity. Yet complexity is useful only when it improves precision, information management or rhetorical focus. A learner who can choose a simple sentence when simplicity is best may show greater control than one who inserts advanced structures everywhere.
Identify claim, contrast, assumption and implication.
49. Discussion practice | 口语
Discuss:
Is advanced English mainly about complexity, or about control?
Use evidence from the course and respond to one challenge.
50. Writing practice | 写作
Write 800 words:
What should count as evidence of advanced independent English performance?
51. Error clinic | 常见问题
| Problem | Repair |
|---|---|
| I use advanced structures everywhere. | Edit by purpose. |
| I use many sources but no hierarchy. | Weight and position them. |
| I hedge every sentence. | Match evidence threshold. |
| I infer motive from tone. | Return to context evidence. |
| I sound formal but unnatural. | Repair phraseology/collocation. |
52. C1-direction performance rubric | 表现量表
| Area | Green | Amber | Red |
|---|---|---|---|
| dense input | structure + nuance tracked | main meaning stable | positions confused |
| sources | weighted/positioned | mostly accurate | listed separately |
| discussion | reformulates | needs extra time | repeats/collapses |
| writing | macro-coherent | some drift | paragraph list |
| register | flexible | limited range | mismatch |
53. Seven-day C1 maintenance cycle | 七天维护
| Day 1 | dense listening | 听力 |
| Day 2 | multi-source reading | 阅读 |
| Day 3 | source/phraseology lab | 来源语块 |
| Day 4 | 15-minute discussion | 口语 |
| Day 5 | 800-word writing | 写作 |
| Day 6 | register/editing | 编辑 |
| Day 7 | unfamiliar integrated task | 综合 |
54. Self-test | 自测
Handle dense multi-source input, preserve source stance, use phraseology naturally, interpret pragmatic meaning cautiously, sustain challenge-based discussion, write a long analysis, switch register and independently repair the first weak link.
55. For parents and teachers | 给家长和老师
At this level, separate language accuracy, reasoning, source handling, pragmatic interpretation and discourse architecture during diagnosis.
Reward clear simple choices when they outperform unnecessary complexity.
For Mandarin speakers, maintain explicit attention to source ownership, reference chains and pragmatic context while reducing routine translation dependence.
56. What Lessons 081–084 add | 第八十一至八十四课增加了什么?
| Lesson | New control |
|---|---|
| 081 | reporting verbs and source distance |
| 082 | lexical bundles and academic phraseology |
| 083 | nuance, irony and pragmatic listening |
| 084 | C1 review and independent integrated performance |
57. Final 150-minute independent mission | 最终 150 分钟任务
- Read three sources totalling 3,000–4,000 words.
- Listen to a 10–15 minute related discussion.
- Build a source-position matrix.
- Identify assumptions and framing.
- Write a 150-word synthesis.
- Hold a 15-minute evidence discussion.
- Write an 800–1,000 word analytical response.
- Switch one section into a different register.
- Run stance, cohesion, source, phraseology and pragmatic audits.
- Diagnose and repair the first weak link.
Consistent success provides meaningful evidence of stable C1-direction independent performance. It does not replace a formal CEFR assessment where certification is required.
