How to Learn Basic English (Chinese Edition) | Lesson No.080 | C1 Discussion and Analytical Writing | C1 讨论与分析写作

Series ID: EDKS-BASIC-ZH-0080 · Lesson No.080 · C1-Direction Integrated Performance

C1 Discussion and Analytical Writing | C1 讨论与分析写作

C1-direction performance means keeping precision, source control, structure and repair working while the task becomes longer, denser and less predictable.

This lesson integrates the advanced system built from Lessons 073–079. It is a performance checkpoint, not a certificate.

这一课把前面的高级能力整合起来:多来源阅读、隐含前提、hedging、长篇衔接、来源定位、实时讨论与分析写作。

The C1 performance map | C1 表现地图

  • dense multi-source reading
  • source positioning
  • assumption/framing analysis
  • precise hedging
  • long-argument cohesion
  • sustained discussion
  • real-time reformulation
  • analytical writing
  • register control
  • independent editing

1. Performance before labels | 表现优先

Ask:

Can the learner maintain accuracy, structure and judgement when the content is unfamiliar and contested?

2. Green / Amber / Red at C1 direction | 绿黄红

  • Green: stable under variation and challenge.
  • Amber: succeeds with extra preparation or familiar topics.
  • Red: core control breaks.

3. Reading mission | 阅读任务

Read three related texts totalling 2,000–3,000 words.

Recover:

  • central claims
  • subclaims
  • evidence
  • assumptions
  • definitions
  • source relationships
  • limitations

4. Read for source role | 来源角色

For each source, decide whether it:

  • establishes
  • supports
  • qualifies
  • contradicts
  • extends
  • reframes

5. Read for framing | 读框架

Ask:

  • What is foregrounded?
  • What baseline is chosen?
  • Which categories are used?
  • What could have been framed differently?

6. Read for evidence status | 证据地位

Separate:

  • measured fact
  • reported experience
  • interpretation
  • speculation
  • recommendation

7. Source matrix | 来源矩阵

SourceClaimEvidenceScopeRole
Aflexibility improves satisfactionsurveyemployeesbaseline
Bperformance stableoutput dataone firmqualifies
Ccoordination cost risesinterviewsteam taskscomplicates

8. Issue-based notes | 按议题记笔记

Do not organise the final essay around Source A/B/C. Organise around the questions the evidence helps answer.

9. Synthesis | 综合

Taken together, the sources suggest that flexibility can improve satisfaction without necessarily reducing output, although coordination costs may emerge in highly interdependent work.

10. Preserve uncertainty | 保留不确定性

If the sources are mixed, the synthesis must remain mixed.

11. Discussion mission | 讨论任务

Hold a 15–20 minute discussion on a semi-unfamiliar issue.

Requirements:

  • state position
  • use evidence
  • respond to challenge
  • clarify definitions
  • reformulate
  • qualify
  • summarise

12. Enter with a provisional position | 先有暂定立场

A C1-direction speaker can hold a view while remaining open to revision.

13. Evidence request | 要求证据

  • What evidence supports that?
  • How broad is that finding?
  • Does the source measure preference or performance?

14. Definition request | 要求定义

  • What do we mean by “effective” here?
  • Are we using the same definition of “success”?

15. Reformulation | 实时换说法

Let me put that differently…

Reformulation is a high-level repair skill, not a sign of failure.

16. Narrow the claim | 缩小主张

I should qualify that. I mean this mainly for highly structured tasks.

17. Expand the frame | 扩展框架

That’s one criterion. We should also consider reliability and access.

18. Accept a counterpoint | 接受反方

That’s a stronger objection than I first allowed for.

19. Update the position | 更新立场

Given that evidence, I’d revise my position to…

20. Productive disagreement | 有效分歧

Disagree with:

  • claim
  • definition
  • evidence
  • scope
  • inference

Do not attack the person.

21. Writing mission | 写作任务

Write 600–900 words answering a genuine analytical question.

22. Introduction | 引言

Define:

  • question
  • scope
  • criteria
  • provisional direction

23. Avoid over-promising in introduction | 引言不要夸张

Do not promise to “prove” what the evidence can only suggest.

24. Body paragraph jobs | 主体段任务

Possible sequence:

  1. establish main evidence
  2. qualify scope
  3. introduce counterevidence
  4. compare explanations
  5. synthesise conditions

25. Claim–evidence–warrant | 主张—证据—解释

Every major paragraph should make the connection explicit.

26. Counterargument | 反方

Represent a credible version, not a weak caricature.

27. Counterargument can change thesis | 反方可改变主论点

If it does not affect the final conclusion at all, ask whether you really engaged with it.

28. Source weighting | 来源权衡

Explain why one source receives more weight:

  • better match to question
  • stronger method
  • more relevant population
  • longer time frame

29. Do not count sources | 不按来源数量投票

Evidence quality and relevance matter more than raw count.

30. Hedging audit | hedging 审计

Check every:

  • may/might
  • appears/seems
  • likely
  • clearly
  • proves

Ask whether evidence licenses that force.

31. Scope audit | 范围审计

Check:

  • population
  • time
  • task
  • context
  • exceptions

32. Framing audit | 框架审计

Ask whether your own wording unfairly foregrounds one side.

33. Cohesion audit | 衔接审计

Reverse-outline the draft. Every paragraph must have a necessary job.

34. Reference audit | 指代审计

Track:

  • this finding
  • this limitation
  • these results
  • they
  • it

35. Register audit | 语体审计

Check whether the tone suits analytical writing:

  • precise
  • neutral-professional
  • not inflated
  • not conversationally vague

36. Advanced grammar audit | 高级结构审计

For every inversion, cleft, reduction or nominalisation, ask:

What job is this structure doing?

37. Remove decorative complexity | 删除装饰性复杂

If ordinary word order is clearer, use it.

38. Lexical precision audit | 词汇精度审计

Check:

  • collocation
  • connotation
  • reporting verb
  • near-synonym boundaries

39. Source ownership audit | 来源归属审计

Can the reader tell which idea belongs to which source and where your interpretation begins?

40. Paraphrase audit | 改写审计

Compare against source for:

  • certainty
  • scope
  • causality
  • time
  • source position

41. Time management | 时间管理

Example 90-minute analytical task:

20 minread + source matrix
10 minissue notes + plan
45 mindraft
15 minstance/cohesion/source audits

42. Timed work should not destroy judgement | 限时也要保留判断

Speed matters, but not at the cost of inventing claims or misrepresenting sources.

43. Listening-to-writing transfer | 听力→写作

Use selective notes from a discussion as another source, but distinguish spoken opinion from measured evidence.

44. Speaking-to-writing transfer | 口语→写作

Discussion can reveal counterarguments and definitions that improve the written plan.

45. Writing-to-speaking transfer | 写作→口语

Do not memorise the essay. Extract the reasoning structure into keywords.

46. Independent tool use | 独立工具使用

For learning/research tasks, use dictionaries, reference works, corpora and digital tools strategically. Follow assessment rules where tool use is restricted.

47. Chinese support | 中文支持

Use Chinese only where it solves a real conceptual problem. Keep routine source analysis, notes and output in English.

48. C1-direction weak-link routing | 弱点路由

BreakReturn
claim force077
long-text cohesion078
framing/assumptions079

49. Do not restart the course | 不要从头重来

Repair the first weak link that causes the advanced task to fail.

50. Reading practice: competing frames | 阅读练习

Source A describes a new scheduling system as increasing flexibility. Source B describes the same system as reducing predictability. Both statements can be true if the system gives workers more choice while making team availability less consistent.

Explain how the frames differ and how a synthesis can preserve both.

51. Writing practice: analytical question | 写作练习

When does flexibility improve performance, and when can it create new costs?

Write a 600-word response using at least two distinct criteria.

52. Speaking practice | 口语练习

Discuss for 15 minutes:

Should evidence of satisfaction influence decisions even when performance effects are uncertain?

Be prepared to revise your stance.

53. Error clinic | 常见高级错误

ProblemRepair
I sound advanced but overstate evidence.Audit stance.
I use many sources but no synthesis.Position sources by issue.

56. Self-test | 自测

Read and position three sources; identify assumptions and framing; sustain a 15-minute discussion; reformulate under challenge; write 600–900 words; preserve source stance; edit macro-cohesion and register; explain why this is evidence of C1-direction ability rather than formal certification.

57. For parents and teachers | 给家长和老师

At this stage, diagnose reasoning, source handling and discourse architecture separately from grammar.

Reward principled revision when new evidence changes the learner’s position.

For Mandarin speakers, keep source ownership, claim force and cross-paragraph reference explicit while reducing routine translation dependence.

58. What Lessons 077–080 add | 第七十七至八十课增加了什么?

LessonNew control
077advanced hedging and evidence-matched precision
078macro-cohesion across long arguments
079assumption, bias-mechanism and framing analysis
080C1 discussion and analytical writing integration

59. Final 120-minute integrated mission | 最终 120 分钟任务

  1. Read three sources totalling 2,500–3,500 words.
  2. Build a source-position matrix.
  3. Identify two assumptions and two frames.
  4. Take issue-based notes.
  5. Write a 150-word synthesis.
  6. Hold a 15-minute discussion with challenge.
  7. Write a 700–900 word analysis.
  8. Run stance, cohesion, source and register audits.
  9. Revise one claim after considering counterevidence.
  10. Diagnose the first weak link.

Consistent success under unfamiliar conditions is meaningful evidence that C1-direction work is becoming stable. It is not a substitute for an appropriate formal CEFR assessment when certification is required.
