How to Learn Basic English (Chinese Edition) | Lesson No.008 | My Daily Routine | 我的日常生活

Series ID: EDKS-BASIC-ZH-0008 · Lesson No.008 · 零基础英语第八课 · Pre-A1 → A1

My Daily Routine | 我的日常生活

I get up at seven. I have breakfast. I go to work. I come home at six.
我七点起床。我吃早餐。我去上班。我六点回家。

A daily routine is one of the best places to build beginner English because the content is already known. You do not need to invent a story. You already know when you wake up, what you eat, where you go, when you work or study and when you sleep.

日常生活非常适合零基础英语,因为内容你本来就知道。你不需要先“想故事”,只需要把已经熟悉的一天映射成英语。

This lesson connects the first seven lessons. Identity tells us who is acting. Objects tell us what we use. Needs tell us why we act. Space tells us where. Numbers and time tell us when. Family tells us who is around us. Routine turns all of these into a moving day.

这一课会把前七课连接起来:谁、什么、为什么、在哪里、多少、几点、和谁一起,最后变成“一天怎样运行”。

The lesson map | 本课路线

  • wake up and get up
  • wash, brush, shower and get dressed
  • have breakfast, lunch and dinner
  • go to school / go to work / go home
  • study, work, exercise, rest and relax
  • present simple for repeated routines
  • third-person -s: works, goes, studies, watches, has
  • Do you…? / Does she…?
  • don’t / doesn’t
  • always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely, never
  • time expressions from Lesson 006
  • first, then, next, after that, finally
  • transport and movement
  • morning, workday, evening and weekend routines
  • reading, writing, listening, retelling and repeated speaking
  • Mandarin-to-English transfer and first-weak-link diagnosis

The goal is not to produce a perfect essay about your day. The first goal is a chain of short sentences you can retrieve without rebuilding each one in Chinese.

第一目标不是写一篇“高级作文”,而是把一连串简单句练到可以直接提取。

1. Wake up vs get up | 醒来和起床

wake up means stop sleeping. get up means leave the bed.

  • I wake up at 6:30.
  • I get up at 6:40.
  • My son wakes up at seven.
  • He gets up five minutes later.

中文里这两个动作在日常说话中有时会混在一起,但英语可以明确区分。建立这种小差别,会让词汇更精确。

2. Wash my face | 洗脸

  • I wash my face in the morning.
  • She washes her face after she gets up.

Notice washes with she. The third-person singular present often adds -s or -es.

3. Brush my teeth | 刷牙

  • I brush my teeth after breakfast.
  • I brush my teeth at night.
  • She brushes her teeth before school.

brush my teeth is a useful chunk. Learn the phrase as a unit rather than translating each word separately every morning.

4. Take a shower | 洗澡

  • I take a shower in the morning.
  • He takes a shower after exercise.
  • She has a shower in the evening.

English varieties can prefer different collocations: take a shower is very common in American English; have a shower is common in British English. A beginner should recognise both.

不要把地区差异当成“只有一个绝对正确答案”。先保证常见表达能听懂。

5. Get dressed | 穿衣服

  • I get dressed at seven.
  • She gets dressed after breakfast.
  • He gets dressed quickly.

get dressed is another high-frequency chunk. It is more useful than memorising dress as an isolated dictionary word.

6. Have breakfast | 吃早餐

  • I have breakfast at seven thirty.
  • She has breakfast at eight.
  • We have breakfast at home.
  • I usually have tea and bread for breakfast.

English commonly says have breakfast. Do not translate Chinese “吃早餐” mechanically as eat breakfast every time. Eat breakfast is possible, but have breakfast is a very useful everyday collocation.

7. Leave home | 离开家

  • I leave home at seven forty.
  • She leaves home at eight.
  • We leave home together.

Notice leave home, not normally “leave from home” in this simple meaning.

8. Go to school / go to work | 上学 / 上班

  • I go to school at seven thirty.
  • I go to work at eight.
  • My sister goes to school by bus.
  • My father goes to work by train.

Notice goes with he/she. English marks the third-person singular in the simple present; Mandarin does not mark routine verbs in the same way.

9. Go home | 回家

English normally says go home, not “go to home”.

  • I go home at six.
  • She goes home after class.
  • We go home together.

Learn go home as one high-frequency phrase.

10. Come home vs go home | come 和 go 的视角

go often moves away from the speaker’s current viewpoint; come moves toward the speaker or reference point.

  • I go home at six.
  • My daughter comes home at five.
  • What time do you come home?

Do not try to solve the whole go/come system with one Chinese translation. Watch the direction of the speaker’s viewpoint.

11. Start work / start school | 开始工作 / 开始上课

  • I start work at nine.
  • She starts school at eight.
  • My class starts at ten.

This reuses Lesson 006’s start/finish time system.

12. Work and study | 工作与学习

  • I work from nine to five.
  • I study English in the evening.
  • She works in a bank.
  • He studies at university.
  • We study together on Tuesday.

The same present-simple system describes repeated work and study habits.

13. Have lunch | 吃午饭

  • I have lunch at twelve thirty.
  • She has lunch at work.
  • We have lunch together.

Again, have lunch is the natural high-frequency chunk to learn first.

14. Finish work / finish school | 结束工作 / 放学

  • I finish work at five thirty.
  • School finishes at three.
  • She finishes class at four.

Ask: What time do you finish work? / What time does school finish?

15. Exercise | 运动

  • I exercise after work.
  • She exercises three times a week.
  • We exercise on Saturday morning.

exercise can be a verb: I exercise. It can also be a noun in other contexts. At beginner level, use the simple verb frame first.

16. Rest and relax | 休息与放松

  • I rest after lunch.
  • I relax in the evening.
  • She rests at home on Sunday.

rest and relax overlap but are not identical. Rest often focuses on stopping activity and recovering. Relax often focuses on becoming less tense.

17. Have dinner | 吃晚饭

  • I have dinner at seven.
  • We have dinner together.
  • My family usually has dinner at home.

Family vocabulary from Lesson 007 now enters the routine system.

18. Do homework | 做作业

  • I do my homework after dinner.
  • My son does his homework at seven.
  • She does homework before she watches TV.

Notice the collocation do homework. Do not automatically translate 做 as make. English chooses different verbs in different collocations.

19. Watch TV / read / listen to music | 晚间活动

  • I watch TV after dinner.
  • I read before bed.
  • I listen to music in the evening.
  • She watches a video on her phone.

Notice listen to music, not normally “listen music”. The small word to belongs to the phrase.

20. Go to bed vs sleep | 上床和睡觉

go to bed means go to your bed to prepare for sleep. sleep describes the sleeping state.

  • I go to bed at eleven.
  • I sleep for seven hours.
  • My child goes to bed at nine.

These two ideas may be close in Chinese conversation, but English can distinguish the action and the state.

21. The present simple | 日常习惯常用一般现在时

For repeated habits, routines and regular facts, English commonly uses the present simple.

  • I get up at seven.
  • I work on Monday.
  • We have dinner at home.
  • They go to school by bus.

Mandarin can express habitual meaning through time words, adverbs and context without changing the verb for person. English uses context too, but also marks the verb system more explicitly.

22. I work; she works | 第三人称 -s

I / you / we / theyhe / she / it
I work.She works.
I get up.He gets up.
I go.She goes.
I have.He has.
I study.She studies.
I watch.He watches.

This is one of the most important Chinese-to-English transfer points in beginner grammar.

23. Why third-person -s is easy to forget | 为什么中文母语者容易漏 -s

In Mandarin, the verb form in 我工作, 他工作, 她工作 does not change because of the subject. English changes work → works with he/she/it in the simple present.

The learner may fully understand the meaning but still omit the ending under speaking pressure. The repair is repeated contrast and retrieval, not another abstract definition.

  • I work. / She works.
  • I go. / He goes.
  • I study. / She studies.

24. Spelling patterns for third-person verbs | 第三人称拼写

  • work → works
  • get → gets
  • go → goes
  • watch → watches
  • brush → brushes
  • study → studies
  • have → has

Do not memorise dozens at once. Start with the verbs in your real routine.

25. Do you…? | 日常习惯问句

  • Do you get up early?
  • Do you have breakfast?
  • Do you go to work by bus?
  • Do you study English every day?
  • Do you exercise?
  • Do you cook dinner?

Short answers: Yes, I do. / No, I don’t.

This reuses Lesson 003’s question system.

26. Does she…? | 第三人称日常问句

  • Does she work on Monday?
  • Does he get up at seven?
  • Does she study English?
  • Does your father drive to work?

After does, use the base verb:

  • She works. → Does she work?
  • He goes. → Does he go?
  • She studies. → Does she study?

Do not say Does she works?

27. I don’t / she doesn’t | 否定习惯

  • I don’t drink coffee in the morning.
  • I don’t work on Sunday.
  • She doesn’t drive to work.
  • He doesn’t eat breakfast at home.

After doesn’t, use the base verb: doesn’t work, not “doesn’t works”.

28. Always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely, never | 频率副词

always总是
usually通常
often经常
sometimes有时
rarely很少
never从不
  • I usually get up at seven.
  • I often study at night.
  • I sometimes work on Saturday.
  • I rarely eat breakfast outside.
  • I never drink coffee.

29. Where frequency adverbs go | 频率副词放哪里?

With many ordinary verbs, the frequency adverb commonly comes before the main verb:

  • I usually get up at seven.
  • She often studies at night.

With be, it commonly comes after be:

  • I am usually tired after work.
  • She is often busy on Monday.

零基础先把这两个高频位置练稳,不需要一次学完所有语序变化。

30. Every day vs everyday | 每天 vs 日常的

every day means each day: I study English every day.

everyday is usually an adjective meaning ordinary or daily: everyday English, everyday life.

所以:every day = 每天;everyday English = 日常英语。

31. Every morning, every Monday, every week | 规律时间表达

  • I walk every morning.
  • I study English every Monday.
  • We call our parents every week.
  • She exercises every Saturday.

These expressions usually do not need on before every Monday.

32. First, then, next, after that, finally | 顺序词

  • first — 首先
  • then — 然后
  • next — 接着
  • after that — 之后
  • finally — 最后

Example:

First, I get up. Then I brush my teeth. Next, I have breakfast. After that, I go to work. Finally, I come home in the evening.

顺序词会把很多短句连接成一个可理解的过程,而不是一堆孤立句子。

33. Before and after | 前后关系

  • I brush my teeth before breakfast.
  • I exercise after work.
  • I study after dinner.
  • I read before bed.

These two words organise events relative to one another, not only relative to the clock.

34. Time + routine | 时间进入日常动作

  • I get up at seven.
  • I have breakfast at seven thirty.
  • I go to work at eight.
  • I have lunch at twelve thirty.
  • I go home at six.
  • I have dinner at seven.
  • I go to bed at eleven.

Lesson 006’s time system becomes the skeleton of your routine.

35. Days + routine | 星期进入日常习惯

  • I work from Monday to Friday.
  • I study English on Tuesday.
  • I exercise on Wednesday and Saturday.
  • I rest on Sunday.

Now one day expands into a week.

36. Family + routine | 家庭进入日常生活

  • My mother gets up at six.
  • My father goes to work at eight.
  • My sister studies at night.
  • My children go to school by bus.
  • We have dinner together on Sunday.

This integrates Lesson 007 family vocabulary with the present-simple routine system.

37. Transport | 交通方式

  • I go to work by bus.
  • I go to school by train.
  • She goes to work by car.
  • He walks to school.
  • I cycle to work.

In the common transport phrase, say by bus/train/car without a or the.

38. Take the bus / take the train | 搭乘某个交通工具

  • I take the bus to work.
  • She takes the train to school.
  • We take Bus 12.

Compare:

  • I go to work by bus.
  • I take the bus to work.

Both are useful, but the grammar around them is different.

39. At home, at work, at school | 高频地点语块

  • I have breakfast at home.
  • I have lunch at work.
  • My daughter eats lunch at school.

Learn these as common phrases. Do not try to derive every English preposition from the Chinese word 在.

40. A beginner morning | 一个简单早晨

I wake up at 6:30. I get up at 6:40. I wash my face and brush my teeth. Then I get dressed. I have breakfast at 7:10. I leave home at 7:40. I go to work by bus.

中文:我六点半醒来,六点四十分起床。洗脸、刷牙,然后穿衣。七点十分吃早餐,七点四十分离开家,坐公交去上班。

This is several simple sentences connected by time and sequence. That is already useful narrative control.

41. A beginner workday | 一个简单工作日

I start work at 8:30. I usually check my messages first. I work until 12:30 and then I have lunch. In the afternoon, I work from 1:30 to 5:30. I sometimes have a meeting at three. I finish work at 5:30.

中文:八点半开始工作,通常先看信息。工作到十二点半吃午饭。下午一点半到五点半工作,有时三点开会,五点半结束。

42. A beginner school day | 一个简单上学日

My son gets up at seven. He has breakfast at seven thirty. He leaves home at eight and walks to school. School starts at eight thirty. He has lunch at school. He finishes at three. After school, he comes home and does his homework.

This paragraph is especially useful for practising third-person verbs: gets, has, leaves, walks, starts, finishes, comes, does.

43. A beginner evening | 一个简单晚上

I come home at six. I have dinner with my family at seven. After dinner, I study English for twenty minutes. Sometimes I watch TV. I brush my teeth at ten thirty. I go to bed at eleven.

中文:我六点回家,七点和家人吃晚饭。饭后学二十分钟英语。有时看电视。十点半刷牙,十一点上床睡觉。

44. Weekend routine | 周末习惯

On Saturday, I usually get up later. I have breakfast at nine. In the morning, I go shopping. In the afternoon, I visit my parents or rest at home. On Sunday, I sometimes exercise in the morning. We usually have dinner together in the evening.

Weekend English is useful because routines change. You can practise contrast between weekday and weekend habits.

45. Weekday vs weekend | 工作日和周末对比

WeekdayWeekend
I get up at 6:30.I get up at 8:00.
I go to work.I stay at home or go out.
I have lunch at work.I have lunch with my family.
I go to bed at 11:00.I sometimes go to bed later.

Contrast makes grammar meaningful because the same person uses different routines in different conditions.

46. Reading practice A: Li Na’s full day | 阅读 A

Li Na works in an office. She usually wakes up at 6:15 and gets up at 6:30. She has breakfast with her husband at 7:00. She leaves home at 7:40 and goes to work by train. Work starts at 9:00. She has lunch at 12:30. She finishes work at 5:30 and usually gets home at 6:30. On Monday and Thursday, she studies English online after dinner. She sometimes exercises on Tuesday. She never works on Sunday. On Sunday evening, she usually has dinner with her parents.

中文:Li Na 在办公室工作。她通常六点十五醒来,六点半起床。七点和丈夫吃早餐,七点四十分出门,坐火车上班。九点开始工作,十二点半吃午饭,五点半下班,通常六点半到家。星期一和星期四晚饭后在线学英语。有时星期二运动。星期日从不工作。星期日晚上通常和父母一起吃饭。

  1. What time does Li Na wake up?
  2. Who does she have breakfast with?
  3. How does she go to work?
  4. What time does work start?
  5. When does she study English?
  6. Does she exercise every day?
  7. Does she work on Sunday?
  8. Who does she have dinner with on Sunday evening?

47. Reading practice B: Wei’s student routine | 阅读 B

Wei is a student. He gets up at 6:45 on weekdays. He does not usually eat a big breakfast, but he always drinks water. He takes Bus 18 to school. His first class starts at 8:15. He has lunch with his friends at 12:00. After school, he sometimes goes to the library. On Wednesday, he plays basketball. He gets home at about 6:00. He does his homework after dinner and usually goes to bed at 10:45.

中文:Wei 是学生。工作日六点四十五起床。通常早餐吃得不多,但总会喝水。坐 18 路公交去学校。第一节课八点十五开始,十二点和朋友吃午饭。放学后有时去图书馆,星期三打篮球。大约六点回家。晚饭后做作业,通常十点四十五睡觉。

  1. What time does Wei get up?
  2. Does he eat a big breakfast?
  3. What does he always drink?
  4. Which bus does he take?
  5. When does he play basketball?
  6. What does he do after dinner?
  7. What time does he usually go to bed?

48. Reading practice C: two different routines | 阅读 C

Anna works at home. Her brother David works in a hospital. Anna starts work at eight, but David often starts at seven. Anna usually has lunch at home. David sometimes has lunch very late because he is busy. Anna finishes work at five and exercises in the evening. David finishes at different times. He does not have the same routine every day.

This text shows an important idea: the present simple can describe regular patterns even when a person’s routine is not identical every day.

  1. Where does Anna work?
  2. Where does David work?
  3. Who starts earlier?
  4. Where does Anna usually have lunch?
  5. Why does David sometimes have lunch late?
  6. Does David finish at the same time every day?

49. Writing practice: my real day | 写我真实的一天

  1. I wake up at ___.
  2. I get up at ___.
  3. I have breakfast at ___.
  4. I go to school/work at ___.
  5. I have lunch at ___.
  6. I finish school/work at ___.
  7. I go home at ___.
  8. I have dinner at ___.
  9. I ___ in the evening.
  10. I go to bed at ___.

Then add two frequency words: usually, often, sometimes, rarely or never.

50. Writing practice: another person’s day | 写另一个人的一天

Choose a fictional person so you can focus on third-person grammar.

  1. She gets up at ___.
  2. She has breakfast at ___.
  3. She goes to ___.
  4. She starts ___ at ___.
  5. She has lunch at ___.
  6. She finishes at ___.
  7. She goes home at ___.
  8. She usually ___ in the evening.

Check every verb. Does it need -s, -es, -ies, or an irregular form such as has?

51. Writing practice: connect short sentences | 把短句连起来

Start with four short sentences:

  • I get up at seven.
  • I brush my teeth.
  • I have breakfast.
  • I go to work.

Connect them:

First, I get up at seven. Then I brush my teeth. Next, I have breakfast. After that, I go to work.

This is how paragraph flow begins: not by writing longer sentences first, but by making the relationship between short sentences clear.

52. Speaking practice: 30 seconds | 30 秒说我的一天

Use only five keywords: wake, breakfast, work/school, home, bed. Speak without full notes.

Repeat the same talk three times. The content stays similar; control improves.

53. Speaking practice: one minute | 一分钟日常口语

Use eight keywords: wake, breakfast, leave, work/school, lunch, home, dinner, bed.

First speak slowly. Do not chase speed. The goal is to retrieve a sequence without translating every sentence from Mandarin.

54. Repeated speaking | 同一个主题说三次

  1. First attempt: finish the message.
  2. Listen to yourself or review from memory.
  3. Repair three weak places.
  4. Second attempt: keep the same content but improve grammar.
  5. Wait a day.
  6. Third attempt: speak again with no full script.

Repeated speaking is powerful because the idea-planning load becomes smaller. More attention can move to grammar, pronunciation and fluency.

55. Listening focus: third-person endings | 听见小小的 -s

  • I work. / She works.
  • I go. / He goes.
  • I study. / She studies.
  • I watch. / He watches.
  • I have. / She has.

These endings can be quiet in fast speech, but they carry grammar. Train them in short controlled sentences before expecting perfect recognition in natural conversation.

56. Listening focus: sequence | 听懂动作顺序

When listening to a routine, do not try to remember every word equally. Listen for:

  • time: at seven, in the morning
  • action: get up, leave, work
  • sequence: first, then, after that
  • frequency: usually, sometimes, never

These four information types create the skeleton of the routine.

57. Pronunciation and rhythm | 日常句子的节奏

English routine sentences usually give more stress to content words.

  • I GET UP at SEVEN.
  • I GO to WORK at EIGHT.
  • I HAVE DINNER at HOME.

Do not pronounce every small word with equal heavy stress. Listen to whole phrases and information groups.

58. Error clinic | 常见错误诊所

Common errorBetter EnglishWhat broke?
I go to home. ✗I go home. ✓fixed phrase
She go to work. ✗She goes to work. ✓third-person -s

I eat breakfast. △I have breakfast. ✓high-frequency collocation
I usually am tired. △I am usually tired. ✓frequency adverb after be

59. Mandarin transfer map | 中文母语学习者常见迁移点

  • Verb person: 中文动词不因 he/she 改变;英语会。
  • Questions: 中文可用“吗”或疑问词;英语一般现在时常用 do/does。
  • Negatives: 中文“不”直接在动词前;英语常用 don’t/doesn’t + base verb。
  • Time order: 中文时间信息位置与英语常见语序不同。
  • Collocation: 吃早餐不一定逐字译 eat breakfast;英语高频说 have breakfast。
  • Prepositions: 中文“在”不能一对一决定 at/on/in。
  • Pronouns: 他/她口语同音,英语 he/she 不同。

The solution is not to stop using Mandarin. Mandarin is a useful bridge. The solution is to stop using Mandarin as a word-for-word template for English production.

60. First weak link diagnosis | 第一个卡点诊断

  • I know routine words but cannot tell a sequence → sequence connectors.
  • I can describe myself but not another person → third-person forms.
  • I can make statements but not questions → do/does.
  • I can ask questions but make negative errors → don’t/doesn’t.
  • I know grammar on paper but freeze in speech → retrieval and repeated speaking.
  • I confuse time phrases → return to Lesson 006.
  • I forget after one day → spaced retrieval.
  • I can speak but sound like translated Chinese → collocations and English word order.

“My daily routine English is bad” is too broad. Find the earliest specific mechanism that breaks.

Daily routine is powerful because the learner already owns the meaning. That reduces conceptual load and makes it easier to see whether the problem is vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, memory or retrieval.

日常主题最大的优势是“内容已知”。学习者不用同时解决“想什么”和“怎么说”。

Use the learner’s actual day as data. Draw a timeline. Put times on it. Add actions. Convert each action into a short English sentence. Then connect the sentences with sequence words. Finally remove the timeline and ask for spoken retrieval.

When errors appear, classify them: vocabulary, collocation, time preposition, third-person -s, do/does, negative form, sequence, frequency, retrieval or pronunciation. Repair the first weak link instead of assigning another generic worksheet.

For third-person -s, use contrastive pairs and meaningful people: I work / my mother works, I go / my brother goes. The meaning contrast helps the form become visible.

For fluency, repeat the same one-minute routine several times across days. Do not demand a new topic every time. Repetition frees attention for grammar and pronunciation.

British Council A1 daily-routine materials likewise connect vocabulary, time expressions, frequency and the present simple inside everyday situations rather than teaching the grammar as an isolated rule list.

67. What the first eight lessons now give you | 前八课已经形成什么系统?

LessonCore jobExample
001IdentityMy name is…
002ObjectsThis is a…
003Preference and needI like / want / need…
004SpaceWhere is it?
005NumbersI am twenty / two tickets
006Timeat seven / on Monday
007RelationshipsThis is my family.
008Repeated lifeI get up / she works

These are not eight isolated chapters. They are connected nodes. A learner can now say:

Hello. My name is Mei. I am thirty years old. This is my family. I have one son. He is eight. We live near the station. I get up at six thirty. My son gets up at seven. We have breakfast together. I go to work by train. He goes to school by bus. I usually come home at six. We have dinner at seven.

这就是“基础英语系统”开始出现的样子:单词不一定很多,但关系越来越多,句子越来越能连接。

68. Final real-world challenge | 最终真实任务

  1. Name ten routine verbs or chunks.
  2. Say your morning in five sentences.
  3. Say your evening in five sentences.
  4. Use three exact times.
  5. Use usually, sometimes and never correctly.
  6. Describe another person’s routine with correct third-person verbs.
  7. Ask three Do you…? questions.
  8. Ask three Does he/she…? questions.
  9. Use first/then/after that/finally in a sequence.
  10. Give a one-minute routine without a full script.

If you can do this, you are moving from sentence recognition into connected beginner speech.

如果能完成,你已经开始从“看懂简单句”进入“自己连接简单句”。
