Time and Days | 时间与星期
What time is it? It is seven o’clock. Today is Monday.
几点了?现在七点。今天星期一。
Time is one of the hidden structures of everyday life. We wake up at a time. A bus leaves at a time. A lesson begins at a time. A shop closes at a time. A family meets on a day. A doctor gives an appointment for a day and a time.
时间是日常生活里看不见的结构。起床有时间,公交有时间,课程有时间,商店开关门有时间,家庭见面有星期,预约也有日期和时间。
That is why time English is not a small vocabulary topic. It is a routing system. Once you can ask, hear, confirm and use time, many other parts of English become easier to organise.
所以“时间英语”不只是背几个单词。它是一套生活导航系统。会问、会听、会确认、会使用时间以后,很多其他英语都会变得更有结构。
The lesson map | 本课路线
- asking and telling clock time
- o’clock, digital time, half past, quarter past and quarter to
- 12-hour and 24-hour time systems
- a.m., p.m., noon and midnight
- morning, afternoon, evening and night
- Monday to Sunday
- today, tomorrow, yesterday, this, next and last
- at / on / in with basic time phrases
- What time do you…? and What time does she…?
- start, finish, leave, arrive and duration
- timetables, appointments and transport schedules
- early, late and on time
- time listening, number discrimination and checking
- reading, writing, speaking, retrieval and self-testing
This lesson grows directly out of Lesson 005. If numbers such as thirteen/thirty or fifteen/fifty are still unstable, time listening will also be unstable. Repair the number system first instead of calling the whole problem “bad at time”.
这一课直接建立在第 005 课数字系统上。如果 thirteen/thirty、fifteen/fifty 还会混,时间听力也会跟着混。先修数字,不要笼统地说“我时间英语不好”。
1. What time is it? | 几点了?
What time is it?
几点了?
Useful answers:
- It is seven o’clock. — 七点。
- It’s eight o’clock. — 八点。
- It’s ten thirty. — 十点半。
- It’s three fifteen. — 三点十五分。
- It’s six forty-five. — 六点四十五分。
It’s is the normal contraction of It is. In everyday speech, you will hear the contraction often.
It’s 是 It is 的常见缩写。真实口语里会经常听到。
2. O’clock | 整点
- one o’clock — 一点
- two o’clock — 两点
- seven o’clock — 七点
- ten o’clock — 十点
- twelve o’clock — 十二点
At beginner level, use o’clock for an exact hour in the traditional clock expression.
零基础阶段可以先把 o’clock 理解成“整点”。
Do not say “seven o’clock thirty”. Once minutes are present, use a different form: seven thirty or half past seven.
3. Digital time is a practical beginner system | 直接读数字时间最实用
| Clock | English | 中文 |
|---|---|---|
| 7:05 | seven oh five | 7:05 |
| 7:10 | seven ten | 7:10 |
| 7:15 | seven fifteen | 7:15 |
| 7:30 | seven thirty | 7:30 |
| 7:45 | seven forty-five | 7:45 |
| 7:55 | seven fifty-five | 7:55 |
Digital reading is useful because phones, train boards, airport screens, calendars and work schedules often show time as digits.
直接读数字时间很实用,因为手机、车站、机场、日历和工作日程都常用数字显示。
When the minutes begin with zero, English may use oh: 7:05 → seven oh five. Zero is also understandable when clarity matters.
4. Half past | 半点
- 7:30 = half past seven
- 8:30 = half past eight
- 10:30 = half past ten
half past seven literally looks at the hour that has already passed: half an hour past seven.
half past seven 可以理解成“七点过去半小时”,也就是 7:30。
If seven thirty is easier for you, use it. The goal is communication, not proving that you know the most traditional clock wording.
5. Quarter past | 过一刻
- 7:15 = quarter past seven
- 8:15 = quarter past eight
- 10:15 = quarter past ten
A quarter of an hour is fifteen minutes. quarter past seven therefore means 7:15.
一小时的四分之一是 15 分钟,所以 quarter past seven = 7:15。
6. Quarter to | 差一刻
- 7:45 = quarter to eight
- 8:45 = quarter to nine
- 10:45 = quarter to eleven
to looks forward to the next hour. 7:45 is fifteen minutes before eight, so it is quarter to eight.
to 是看“下一点还差多少”。7:45 距离八点还差十五分钟,所以说 quarter to eight。
7. Past and to with other minutes | 更完整的传统读法
- 7:10 = ten past seven
- 7:20 = twenty past seven
- 7:40 = twenty to eight
- 7:50 = ten to eight
You do not need to force yourself to produce every form immediately. Recognition can come first. A beginner can communicate perfectly well with direct digital reading while building listening recognition of past/to.
零基础阶段可以“听懂两套、主动先用一套”。这比同时追求所有形式更稳定。
8. Noon and midnight | 中午与午夜
- noon — 中午 12 点
- midnight — 午夜 12 点
These words help avoid ambiguity around 12 a.m./p.m., which can confuse even experienced speakers. In important schedules, write or say noon or midnight when that is clearer.
12 a.m./12 p.m. 有时连英语母语者也会觉得容易混。重要信息可以直接说 noon 或 midnight 来提高准确性。
9. a.m. and p.m. | 12 小时制
- 7:00 a.m. — 上午七点
- 11:30 a.m. — 上午十一点半
- 2:00 p.m. — 下午两点
- 8:00 p.m. — 晚上八点
Many English-speaking settings use a 12-hour clock with a.m./p.m. Others use 24-hour time in transport, healthcare, the military, work systems or official documents.
英语环境里 12 小时制和 24 小时制都会出现。要学会看懂两种系统。
10. Twenty-four-hour time | 24 小时制
| 08:00 | 8:00 a.m. | 上午八点 |
| 13:00 | 1:00 p.m. | 下午一点 |
| 18:30 | 6:30 p.m. | 晚上六点半 |
| 21:15 | 9:15 p.m. | 晚上九点十五 |
The important beginner skill is conversion and recognition. If a train leaves at 18:30, you should know it is 6:30 p.m. without needing a long calculation.
交通信息里看到 18:30,要能快速理解成下午/晚上 6:30。
11. Morning, afternoon, evening and night | 一天的四个时间段
| morning | 早上 / 上午 | in the morning |
| afternoon | 下午 | in the afternoon |
| evening | 傍晚 / 晚上 | in the evening |
| night | 夜间 | at night |
Notice the fixed beginner contrast: in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening, but at night.
这是一个值得整块记忆的高频搭配,不要只背 in = 在、at = 在。
12. At + exact time | 具体钟点常用 at
- at seven
- at 8:30
- at noon
- at midnight
- at night
Examples:
- I get up at seven.
- Class starts at nine.
- The train leaves at 6:30.
- We meet at noon.
Do not translate the Chinese word 在 every time and then choose a preposition. Learn the English time phrase as one chunk.
13. In + broad period | 大时间段常用 in
- in the morning
- in the afternoon
- in the evening
- in July
- in 2026
For this lesson, focus first on parts of the day. Months and years are useful previews for later date lessons.
14. On + day | 星期和具体天常用 on
- on Monday
- on Tuesday
- on Friday morning
- on Sunday evening
Examples:
- I have English class on Monday.
- We meet on Tuesday.
- I work on Friday.
- She studies on Sunday evening.
High-value beginner map: at seven / on Monday / in the morning.
一个非常有用的零基础地图:at + 钟点 / on + 星期 / in + 大时间段。
15. One sentence can contain several time layers | 一个句子可以有多层时间
I have English class at seven in the evening on Monday.
我星期一晚上七点上英语课。
English can organise specific clock time, part of day and day of week in one sentence. You do not need to copy Mandarin time order word by word.
中文和英语都能表达同样时间信息,但词序与介词系统不同。学习完整英语模式比逐字翻译更可靠。
16. Monday to Sunday | 一周七天
| Monday 星期一 | Tuesday 星期二 | Wednesday 星期三 | Thursday 星期四 |
| Friday 星期五 | Saturday 星期六 | Sunday 星期日 / 星期天 |
In standard English writing, the days begin with capital letters: Monday, not “monday”.
17. Pronunciation: Wednesday | Wednesday 不是按每个字母慢慢读
Wednesday is a useful lesson in English spelling. The written form has more letters than most speakers clearly pronounce. Use a good audio model and learn the whole spoken word, not a letter-by-letter Chinese approximation.
英语拼写和声音不是永远一一对应。Wednesday 是很好的例子。不要用汉字长期硬标音,要听真实音频并记整词。
18. Pronunciation: Thursday | Thursday 的 th
Thursday begins with /θ/ in many standard pronunciations. Mandarin does not have the same phoneme. Put the tongue lightly between the teeth and let air pass. Do not worry about accent perfection; aim for a stable, understandable distinction.
普通话没有完全对应的 /θ/。先追求清楚可懂,不需要追求“像某一种母语口音”。
19. What day is it today? | 今天星期几?
What day is it today?
今天星期几?
- Today is Monday.
- It’s Tuesday.
- Today is Friday.
Do not confuse What day…? with What time…?. One asks the day; the other asks the clock time.
20. Today, tomorrow and yesterday | 今天、明天、昨天
- today — 今天
- tomorrow — 明天
- yesterday — 昨天
Examples:
- Today is Monday.
- Tomorrow is Tuesday.
- Yesterday was Sunday.
was previews past time. You do not need the whole past-tense system now. Just recognise that English changes the verb when the time changes.
中文更多依靠时间词和语境;英语会在很多情况下让动词形式也跟着变化。这是以后时态学习的重要入口。
21. This Monday, next Monday, last Monday | 这个、下个、上个星期一
- this Monday — 这个星期一
- next Monday — 下个星期一
- last Monday — 上个星期一
In these common expressions, English usually does not add on: See you next Monday, not normally “on next Monday”.
- I have a test this Friday.
- See you next Tuesday.
- We met last Thursday.
22. Weekday and weekend | 工作日与周末
- weekday — 工作日
- weekdays — 工作日(复数)
- weekend — 周末
- on weekdays — 工作日里
- at the weekend — 英式常见
- on the weekend — 美式常见
Do not treat variation as an error. English has regional varieties. A beginner should first learn to understand common alternatives, then choose one consistent productive form for the context.
23. What time do you…? | 你几点……?
- What time do you get up?
- What time do you have breakfast?
- What time do you go to school?
- What time do you go to work?
- What time do you go home?
- What time do you go to bed?
Answers:
- I get up at seven.
- I have breakfast at seven thirty.
- I go to work at eight.
- I go to bed at eleven.
This connects Lesson 003’s do question system with time.
24. What time does she…? | 她几点……?
- What time does she start work?
- What time does he leave home?
- What time does the train arrive?
After does, use the base verb:
- She starts at nine. → What time does she start?
- He leaves at seven. → What time does he leave?
Do not say does she starts. The third-person information is already carried by does.
25. Start and finish | 开始与结束
- Class starts at nine.
- Class finishes at ten thirty.
- Work starts at eight thirty.
- Work finishes at five.
Questions:
- What time does class start?
- What time does class finish?
- When does work start?
- When does work finish?
26. Leave and arrive | 出发与到达
- The train leaves at 7:20.
- The train arrives at 8:05.
- I leave home at seven.
- I arrive at work at eight.
Notice two useful patterns: arrive at work, arrive at the station, but arrive home often appears without at.
介词不要只背一个中文意思。把高频短语成块学习。
27. From… to… | 从……到……
- I work from nine to five.
- The shop is open from ten to eight.
- Class is from two to three thirty.
- I study from Monday to Friday.
from X to Y is one of the most useful time frames in beginner English.
把它当作一个完整语块:from ___ to ___。
28. Duration: for ten minutes | 持续多久
- I study for ten minutes.
- The class is two hours long.
- The bus ride takes thirty minutes.
- I sleep for seven hours.
Do not confuse “What time?” with “How long?”. What time? asks a point on the clock. How long? asks duration.
“几点”与“多久”是两个不同信息任务。
29. How long? | 多久?
How long is the lesson?
课程多久?
- It is one hour.
- It is ninety minutes.
- It takes thirty minutes.
At beginner level, learn one simple duration frame and reuse it.
30. In ten minutes vs at ten | 十分钟后 vs 十点
These two phrases look similar but do different jobs:
- at ten — at 10:00
- in ten minutes — ten minutes from now
Example:
The train leaves at ten. We need to leave in ten minutes.
火车十点开。我们十分钟后要出发。
31. Early, late and on time | 早、迟、准时
- early — 早
- late — 迟
- on time — 准时
- I am early.
- I am late.
- The train is on time.
- Please be on time.
Do not translate on time word by word. Learn it as a fixed phrase meaning “at the expected time”.
32. A simple school timetable | 简单课程表
| Time | Monday | Tuesday | Wednesday |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9:00 | English | Math | Science |
| 10:30 | Break | Break | Break |
| 11:00 | Science | English | Math |
| 12:30 | Lunch | Lunch | Lunch |
| 2:00 | Library | Sports | English |
A timetable should not be read from top to bottom like a story. Scan in two dimensions: find the correct day, then find the correct time.
日程表不是故事,不需要逐字从头读。先找星期,再找时间。这个阅读策略本身就是语言能力。
33. Timetable questions | 日程表问题
- What time is English on Monday?
- What is at two o’clock on Tuesday?
- When is lunch?
- Is there English on Wednesday?
- What time does the break start?
Answer by returning to the table, not by guessing from memory.
34. Appointment English | 预约时间
A: What time is your appointment?
B: It’s at three thirty.
A: Today?
B: No. Tuesday.
A: Tuesday at three thirty?
B: Yes.
中文:A:你的预约几点?B:三点半。A:今天吗?B:不是,星期二。A:星期二三点半?B:对。
Repeating the day and time together is a strong checking habit.
35. Class schedule dialogue | 课程时间对话
A: What day is English class?
B: Monday and Wednesday.
A: What time does it start?
B: At nine.
A: What time does it finish?
B: At ten thirty.
One dialogue now combines days, time, do/does, start/finish and checking.
36. Train information dialogue | 火车时间
A: What time does the train leave?
B: At eighteen forty-five.
A: Is that six forty-five p.m.?
B: Yes.
A: What time does it arrive?
B: At nineteen thirty.
This dialogue practises 24-hour to 12-hour conversion and confirmation.
37. The Chinese-to-English time-order problem | 中文时间词序不要逐块搬
Mandarin often places time information before the main verb: 我星期一早上七点上班. English can organise the same information differently: I start work at seven on Monday morning.
Do not ask “Which English word equals 在?” for every sentence. Ask instead: “What is the normal English time phrase here?”
- at seven
- on Monday
- in the morning
- on Monday morning
- next Monday
Chunking the time phrase prevents many translation errors.
38. Time listening is number listening plus structure | 时间听力 = 数字听力 + 结构
When a learner hears seven fifteen, several processes happen: recognise seven, recognise fifteen, hold both in memory, assign hour/minute roles, and map them onto a time representation.
所以“听不懂时间”可能不是词汇问题。可能是数字辨别、工作记忆、语速或信息结构问题。
39. Teen/ty inside time | 7:15 还是 7:50?
- 7:15 — seven fifteen
- 7:50 — seven fifty
- 8:13 — eight thirteen
- 8:30 — eight thirty
- 9:14 — nine fourteen
- 9:40 — nine forty
If these pairs are hard, return to Lesson 005. Do not add more timetable vocabulary until the sound distinction improves.
40. Check the time when it matters | 重要时间不要猜
- Sorry, what time was that?
- Did you say seven fifteen?
- Seven fifty or seven fifteen?
- Is that 7:30 a.m.?
- Tuesday at three thirty, correct?
- Please say the time again.
Flights, trains, appointments, medicine schedules and exams are high-cost information. Asking again is intelligent communication.
41. Reading practice A: a workday | 阅读 A:工作日
Mei works from Monday to Friday. She wakes up at 6:15 and gets up at 6:30. She leaves home at 7:30. Her train leaves at 7:48 and arrives in the city at 8:20. Work starts at 9:00. She has lunch at 12:30. She finishes work at 5:30 p.m. On Monday and Thursday, she studies English from 7:00 to 8:30 in the evening. She usually gets home at 9:15 on those days.
中文:Mei 星期一到星期五工作。六点十五醒来,六点半起床,七点半离开家。火车 7:48 出发,8:20 到市区。九点开始工作,十二点半吃午饭,下午五点半下班。星期一和星期四晚上七点到八点半学英语,那两天通常九点十五到家。
- What days does Mei work?
- What time does she wake up?
- What time does her train leave?
- What time does work start?
- When does she study English?
- How long is the English class?
- What time does she get home on Monday and Thursday?
42. Reading practice B: a student timetable | 阅读 B:学生日程
Chen has classes on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. His first class starts at 8:30 a.m. Lunch is from 12:00 to 1:00. On Tuesday, he has a science lab from 2:00 to 4:00. On Wednesday, he has no classes, but he studies in the library in the morning. On Friday, he finishes at 3:15. He works part-time on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
中文:Chen 星期一、星期二、星期四和星期五上课。第一节课早上八点半开始。午饭十二点到一点。星期二下午两点到四点有科学实验课。星期三没课,但上午在图书馆学习。星期五三点十五结束。星期六上午十点到下午四点做兼职。
- Which days does Chen have classes?
- What time does the first class start?
- How long is lunch?
- When is the science lab?
- What does Chen do on Wednesday morning?
- What time does he finish on Friday?
- How long does he work on Saturday?
43. Reading practice C: transport board | 阅读 C:交通时刻表
| Service | Departure | Arrival |
|---|---|---|
| A12 | 07:15 | 08:05 |
| A18 | 07:50 | 08:42 |
| B03 | 08:30 | 09:10 |
| B09 | 09:45 | 10:25 |
- Which service leaves at 07:15?
- Which service leaves at 07:50?
- What time does A18 arrive?
- Which service arrives at 09:10?
- How long is the B09 journey?
Notice how one small digit difference — 07:15 versus 07:50 — changes the route decision. This is why teen/ty listening matters.
44. Writing practice: my weekday | 写我的工作日/上学日
- I wake up at ______.
- I leave home at ______.
- I start school/work at ______.
- I have lunch at ______.
- I finish at ______.
- I go home at ______.
- I have dinner at ______.
- I go to bed at ______.
Add one day expression and one duration: on Monday, for thirty minutes.
45. Writing practice: my week | 写我的一周
- On Monday, I ______.
- On Tuesday, I ______.
- On Wednesday, I ______.
- On Thursday, I ______.
- On Friday, I ______.
- At the weekend, I ______.
Now add exact time to three sentences. This turns a vocabulary list into a schedule.
46. Speaking practice: 30-second tomorrow | 30 秒说明天
Use only five keywords: morning, work/school, lunch, afternoon, evening. Speak without full notes.
Example: Tomorrow is Tuesday. I start work at nine. I have lunch at twelve thirty. I finish at five. In the evening, I study English at seven.
Then repeat the same task tomorrow with less preparation.
47. Speaking practice: one-minute week | 一分钟说一周
Do not try to make every day different. A real week contains repetition. Repetition is useful language practice.
可以说:Monday to Friday I work. On Tuesday I study English. On Saturday I meet my family. On Sunday I rest.
48. Error clinic | 常见错误诊所
| Common error | Better English | What broke? |
|---|---|---|
| at Monday ✗ | on Monday ✓ | day preposition |
| in seven o’clock ✗ | at seven o’clock ✓ | clock-time preposition |
| at the morning ✗ | in the morning ✓ | part-of-day phrase |
| in night ✗ | at night ✓ | fixed chunk |
| What time it is? ✗ | What time is it? ✓ | question order |
| What day today? ✗ | What day is it today? ✓ | missing be/subject |
| What time does class starts? ✗ | What time does class start? ✓ | does + base verb |
| on next Monday ✗/unusual | next Monday ✓ | time-expression chunk |
| seven fifteen / seven fifty confused | confirm the minutes | teen/ty listening |
49. Mandarin transfer map | 中文母语学习者的主要差异
- Time order: 中文常把时间放在动词前;英语高频结构可能把时间放句尾。
- Prepositions: 中文一个“在”不能机械对应英语 at/on/in。
- Verb form: 英语 does + base verb,中文不使用这种助动词系统。
- Past reference: yesterday may trigger was/went; 中文不靠同样的动词屈折。
- Pronunciation: English clock time inherits teen/ty sound contrasts.
These differences are not obstacles to fear. They are simply points where direct translation becomes unreliable.
50. First weak link diagnosis | 第一个卡点诊断
- I can read time but cannot say it → spoken-number retrieval.
- I can say time but cannot hear it → listening discrimination.
- I hear numbers but mix 15/50 → Lesson 005 teen/ty repair.
- I know days but use the wrong preposition → chunk at/on/in phrases.
- I can answer but cannot ask → question-frame practice.
- I know single times but lose a timetable → scan day first, then time.
- I understand a timetable but cannot use it in speech → retrieval and retelling.
- I understand but do not check unclear information → repair-language practice.
The first weak link is the earliest place where correct meaning breaks. Repair that point first.
51. Retrieval lab | 提取练习
- 几点了? → ______
- 现在七点。 → ______
- 现在七点半。 → ______
- 今天星期几? → ______
- 今天星期一。 → ______
- 星期二见。 → ______

56. For parents and teachers | 给家长和老师
Teach time through real schedules, not only drawings of clocks. Ask when breakfast happens, when school starts, when a bus arrives and when a lesson ends. The learner already understands the concept of time; the job is to map that concept into English forms.
时间英语最好连接真实日程,不要只停在画钟表。问早餐几点、学校几点、公交几点、课程几点结束。
When the learner fails, identify the layer: number recognition, teen/ty discrimination, clock conversion, preposition, question order, third-person do/does, timetable scanning or memory load.
不要用一张更长的“时间练习纸”覆盖所有问题。先找第一处断点。
For listening, increase complexity gradually: one time → day + time → timetable → short dialogue → authentic schedule. Success at the simpler layer should come before speed and noise.
For output, repeat the same routine several times. Repeated speaking reduces planning load and lets pronunciation, grammar and fluency improve without constantly inventing new content.
