A change is not automatically a trend. A fluctuation is not automatically volatility. A plateau is not the same as stability. And a trend does not explain its own cause.

Advanced learners often know the basic graph words—increase, decrease, rise, fall—but lose precision when the pattern becomes more complex. A value rises, pauses, drops, recovers, fluctuates, peaks, levels off and then enters a stable range. If every stage is described as “goes up” or “changes a lot”, the language is too weak for C1–C2 reasoning.
Manchester Academic Phrasebank defines a trend as the general direction in which something develops or changes over time and distinguishes trend description from projection. Cambridge defines fluctuation as repeated change, often between levels, and volatility as a tendency to change suddenly. Cambridge also defines stabilize as becoming fixed or stopping change. Those definitions give us a useful starting point, but real control requires more than dictionary labels: learners must identify direction, rate, persistence, variability, turning points and time horizon.
First describe what moved. Then describe how it moved. Only after that should you explain why.

Part I — Build the movement map | 第一部分:先建立“变化地图”
1. Change is the broad parent concept | change 是最宽的上位词
A change simply means something becomes different. It does not tell the reader direction, magnitude, speed, persistence or cause. “Sales changed in June” is grammatically complete but analytically weak. Advanced English asks what kind of change occurred: increase, decline, fluctuation, reversal, stabilisation, structural shift, temporary dip or seasonal cycle.
2. Change can be noun or verb | grammar network
“Demand changed.” “There was a change in demand.” “Demand underwent a change.” “Changes in demand affected staffing.” Each frame packages the event differently. The noun form supports long-form cohesion because later sentences can refer back to this change, the shift or the reversal.
3. Trend is a general direction over time | trend = 一段时间内的总体方向
Manchester Academic Phrasebank describes a trend as the general direction in which something develops or changes over time. This definition contains two important constraints: general direction and over time. One rise from Monday to Tuesday is a change. Several periods of broadly rising values may support an upward trend. A trend can contain temporary reversals without losing its overall direction.
4. One data point cannot create a trend by itself | 单点不是趋势
If sales move from 100 to 120 once, you have an increase. If they move 100 → 120 → 118 → 130 → 137 over several periods, you may describe an overall upward trend. The second sequence contains a small decline but the general direction remains upward. Trend language therefore requires a time horizon.
5. Upward trend and downward trend describe direction, not cause | upward/downward trend
“There was an upward trend in enrolment.” “A downward trend in error rates continued.” These phrases tell us direction. They do not tell us why enrolment rose or why errors declined. Lesson No.032 protects this boundary: trend description is observational until causal evidence is added.
6. Trend in / trend toward / trend away from | preposition patterns
A trend in prices describes movement within a variable. A trend toward remote work describes movement in behaviour or preference. A trend away from cash payments describes directional change from one practice. Learn the preposition with the concept.
7. Pattern is broader than trend | pattern ≠ trend
A pattern can be any recurring or structured arrangement. A trend specifically involves general direction or development over time. Alternating high-low-high-low values create a pattern but not necessarily an upward or downward trend. Seasonal repetition is a pattern; long-term growth across seasons can be a trend layered on top.
8. Movement is a useful neutral chart word | movement
When you know a value changed but do not yet want to classify the pattern, movement is useful: “The most noticeable movement occurred in Q3.” The noun is neutral and often appears in finance, economics and data commentary. It does not automatically imply improvement or deterioration.
9. Shift suggests movement from one state or position to another | shift
A shift often sounds more structural than a small numerical movement: shift in consumer behaviour, shift toward online learning, policy shift, demographic shift. But the word does not guarantee permanence. A temporary shift is possible. Use modifiers to show duration and scale.
10. Transition emphasises movement between states | transition
A transition foregrounds the process of moving from one state, system or stage to another: transition from school to work, transition to renewable energy, transitional period. It is not simply a synonym for increase or decrease. It often contains a categorical change.
11. Transformation is stronger than change | transformation
Transformation suggests substantial change in form, function or character. If the data show only a modest increase, calling it “transformational” is exaggeration. This is where Lesson No.029’s intensity control matters: stronger nouns carry stronger claims.
12. Rise and increase are broad upward-movement words | rise / increase
Manchester Phrasebank lists rise and increase among core trend nouns. Both can describe upward movement. Increase can be noun or verb, transitive or intransitive: “Prices increased”; “The company increased prices.” Rise is intransitive: “Prices rose,” not “The company rose prices.”
13. Raise is transitive; rise is intransitive | raise vs rise
“Prices rose by 10%.” “The company raised prices by 10%.” This classic grammar distinction is part of advanced trend vocabulary because the choice also reveals agency. Rise can describe a change without naming who caused it; raise requires an agent that increases something.
14. Growth usually implies increase over time | growth
Growth is common with population, revenue, output, demand, vocabulary, economy and other quantities that develop over time. It often sounds more sustained than one isolated increase. “Revenue increased 8% this month” reports a change. “Revenue growth accelerated over three quarters” describes a continuing growth process.
15. Expansion often implies enlargement of scale or scope | expansion
Expansion can describe markets, capacity, programmes, businesses, vocabulary networks or physical systems becoming larger. It is not identical to numerical growth. A programme can expand into new regions even if total enrolment remains flat.
16. Gain is increase viewed as improvement or acquisition | gain
Gain often carries positive or acquisition-oriented meaning: gain market share, learning gains, efficiency gains. An increase in error rate is not normally an “error gain” because the evaluative framing differs. Semantic prosody from Lesson No.027 matters.
17. Climb is vivid and often journalistic/business-like | climb
“Prices climbed to a three-year high.” Climb makes upward movement vivid and can imply gradual or sustained rise depending context. In formal academic writing, increase/rise may be more neutral. Register determines whether metaphor helps or distracts.
18. Surge signals a rapid, substantial rise | surge
A surge is a sudden strong increase. It is much stronger than rise. “Demand surged” should be supported by a visibly sharp movement or domain convention. Do not use it merely because the line goes upward.
19. Spike is a sharp, often brief rise | spike
A spike often implies a sudden peak that may be temporary: spike in traffic, spike in temperature, spike in cases. If the value remains high afterward, “surge followed by a sustained high level” may be more accurate than “spike.”
20. Jump is broad but informal-vivid | jump
“Costs jumped 15%.” This is common in news and business writing. It sounds more vivid than “increased”. Choose it when genre supports dynamic language. In formal research, the neutral verb is often safer.
21. Fall and decrease are broad downward-movement words | fall / decrease
Like rise/increase, these are core trend terms. Decrease can be transitive or intransitive. Fall is usually intransitive. “Error rates fell.” “The intervention decreased error rates.” The grammar again marks whether agency is expressed.
22. Decline often suggests a sustained downward movement | decline
Decline can be noun or verb and often feels more sustained or evaluative than a single drop: decline in sales, declining participation, gradual decline. It may also describe deterioration in quality or health, so context can add negative semantic colouring.
23. Drop can be neutral or sudden depending modifier | drop
“A drop of 5%” simply names a decrease. “A sharp drop” adds rate/magnitude. “A sudden drop” adds time profile. The noun itself is less precise than the whole phrase. Advanced control often comes from noun + modifier + time expression.
24. Plunge signals a steep, dramatic fall | plunge
Plunge is strong, vivid language. It may be appropriate for a dramatic market collapse or rapid temperature fall, but not for a modest decline. If the chart shows 2% down, plunge misrepresents magnitude.
25. Slump often combines decline with poor performance | slump
Slump is common in economics, sales and performance: sales slump, market slump. It is more evaluative and domain-specific than decline. Store it with typical contexts rather than using it as a universal graph word.
26. Contraction means reduction in scale | contraction
Contraction often describes economies, markets, output, muscles or systems becoming smaller. In economics it can have a technical cyclical meaning. It is not simply a formal synonym for every decrease.
27. Dip suggests a small or temporary fall | dip
A dip often sounds temporary or modest: “There was a slight dip in attendance in March.” If the downward movement continues for years, decline is more natural. The noun therefore encodes time profile as well as direction.
28. Erosion describes gradual loss | erosion
Beyond its physical sense, erosion can describe gradual loss of trust, market share, margins or standards. It carries a slow-degradation metaphor. This is not a neutral substitute for decline; it implies gradual wearing away.
29. Direction and magnitude are separate dimensions | direction ≠ size
“A rise” gives direction. “A 20% rise” gives magnitude. “A sharp rise” describes the movement qualitatively. “A sharp 20% rise over two days” adds magnitude and time. Advanced trend writing combines dimensions rather than relying on dramatic verbs.
30. Slight, modest, marked and substantial grade magnitude | magnitude adjectives
Manchester Phrasebank uses modifiers such as slight, steep, sharp, steady, gradual, marked. Notice that not all grade the same dimension: slight/marked/substantial mainly describe magnitude, while gradual/sharp often describe rate/profile, and steady describes consistency. Do not treat them as one simple intensity ladder.
31. Sharp can describe speed/profile rather than total size | sharp
A value can rise sharply over one week but by only a moderate total amount. Another value can rise gradually for ten years and end much higher. “Sharp” describes the shape of movement, not necessarily the final magnitude.
32. Steep often describes slope/rate | steep
“A steep decline” suggests a large change over a relatively short horizontal interval. It is metaphorical slope language. Use it when the visual or time-series profile justifies the image.
33. Gradual describes slow change over time | gradual
A gradual increase unfolds slowly. It can still become large over a long period. Do not paraphrase gradual as small. Rate and cumulative magnitude are different.
34. Steady describes regularity of direction/rate | steady
A steady rise continues with relatively little interruption or irregularity. It is not identical to stability, because the value is still changing. “Steady growth” means consistent growth; “stable level” means comparatively little change in level.
35. Part I checkpoint: describe before interpreting | 第一部分检查点
Before you call something a trend, ask: How many observations are there? Over what time horizon? What is the general direction? Are there temporary reversals? How large is the movement? How fast is it? Does the word add evaluation? Can I describe the movement without explaining the cause? If those questions are clear, the vocabulary becomes analytical rather than decorative.
Part II — Rate, acceleration, fluctuation and turning points | 第二部分:速度、加速、波动与转折点
36. Rate of change is different from amount of change | 变化速度 ≠ 变化总量
A value can change by a large amount slowly or by a small amount quickly. “Revenue rose 40% over ten years” describes a large cumulative change. “Revenue rose 8% in one month” may represent a faster rate. Advanced descriptions therefore need both how much and how quickly.
37. Rapid / quickly / sharply describe speed, but not identically | rapid / sharply
Rapid growth clearly describes fast development. Sharp rise often describes a steep movement over a short interval and may also imply noticeable magnitude. Quickly is common but less technical. Choose the expression that matches the visual/time profile.
38. Pace names the speed of a process | pace of growth / decline
“The pace of growth slowed.” This does not mean growth stopped or reversed. The quantity can still be rising while the rate of increase becomes smaller. This distinction is central to interpreting acceleration and deceleration.
39. Accelerate means the rate of change increases | accelerate
If growth accelerates, the quantity is increasing faster than before. Example: 2%, then 5%, then 9% growth. Acceleration describes a change in the rate, not merely a high level. “Growth accelerated” is different from “growth was high.”
40. Decelerate / slow mean the rate decreases | decelerate / slow
A slowing increase can still be an increase. If revenue grows by 10%, then 6%, then 2%, growth is slowing or decelerating even though revenue continues to rise. Learners often misread slower growth as decline. The nouns are different because the level and rate are different variables.
41. Growth slowing is not negative growth | slow growth ≠ decline
“Growth slowed to 1%” means the quantity still grew. “Growth fell to -1%” or “the economy contracted by 1%” describes decline. In economic and business writing, this distinction changes the factual claim.
42. Accelerating decline means falling faster | downward acceleration
“The decline accelerated” means the downward movement became faster or larger per unit time. It does not mean the decline stopped. The same rate vocabulary can apply to upward or downward movement.
43. Momentum is metaphorical continuation language | momentum
In business, policy and social change, momentum describes a tendency for movement or progress to continue. “Growth lost momentum” often means growth continued but weakened. The word is metaphorical and less precise than a measured rate, so use it where the genre accepts interpretive language.
44. Gain momentum / lose momentum are process phrases | momentum collocations
A campaign can gain momentum; a recovery can lose momentum. These phrases describe qualitative dynamics. They should not replace actual numerical rate language when exact change is available.
45. Fluctuate means move repeatedly between levels | fluctuate
Cambridge defines fluctuate as changing repeatedly between one level or state and another. Common frames include fluctuate between X and Y, fluctuate from month to month, fluctuate with demand, fluctuate wildly. Repeated movement is the core concept.
46. Fluctuation does not require a long-term direction | fluctuation ≠ trend
A series can fluctuate around a stable average with no upward or downward trend. It can also fluctuate while trending upward overall. The two descriptions operate at different levels: trend = general direction; fluctuation = local up-and-down movement.
47. Minor fluctuation and major fluctuation grade amplitude | fluctuation magnitude
Use modifiers to describe how wide the swings are: minor, modest, substantial, pronounced, wide. A fluctuating series can still be stable in a broader sense if movements stay within a narrow accepted range.
48. Volatility emphasises sudden or large change tendency | volatility
Cambridge defines volatility as the quality of being likely to change suddenly. In finance, the term can have more technical definitions. In general analytical English, high volatility suggests substantial or rapid unpredictability in movement, not simply any fluctuation.
49. Fluctuation and volatility overlap but are not identical | fluctuation vs volatility
All volatile series fluctuate, but not every fluctuating series is highly volatile. A temperature varying gently from 20°C to 22°C each day fluctuates. A price swinging 20% up and down unexpectedly may be described as volatile. Volatility foregrounds instability and suddenness.
50. Variability is broader than volatility | variability
Variability means the degree to which values differ or change. It can be biological, statistical, operational or behavioural. Variability may be predictable and slow. Volatility more often suggests unstable or abrupt movement. Again, technical fields may define the terms more narrowly.
51. Variation can describe differences without time order | variation
There can be variation across people, regions or samples with no time dimension. Trend and fluctuation normally require ordered change over time or sequence. This is why “regional variation” is not automatically a trend.
52. Oscillate means move repeatedly between states/levels | oscillate
Oscillate is useful when movement repeatedly swings between two positions, values or states. It is more technical/formal than go up and down. In physics it has precise meanings; in general analysis it can describe recurring swings.
53. Swing can be informal or analytical | swing
“The market swung sharply between gains and losses.” Swing is vivid and common in journalism/business. It can refer to one large move or repeated movement. Check the genre before using it in formal academic prose.
54. Cycle implies recurring phases | cycle
A cycle is a recurring sequence of phases: business cycle, seasonal cycle, learning cycle. A cyclical pattern is not merely random fluctuation. The recurrence has structure, even if the timing or amplitude varies.
55. Seasonal variation repeats with calendar timing | seasonality
Demand may rise every December and fall every January. This is a seasonal pattern, not necessarily a long-term trend. If December peaks become larger every year, the series can have both seasonality and an upward trend.
56. Noise is irregular movement that may obscure a signal | noise
In data language, noise often describes irregular variation that obscures a meaningful pattern. The word can be technical. Do not dismiss inconvenient observations as “noise” without a methodological basis.
57. Trend plus noise is a useful conceptual model | signal + noise
A series may contain a long-term upward direction while short-term values bounce around it. In plain English: “Despite month-to-month fluctuations, the overall trend remained upward.” This sentence elegantly separates local variation from general direction.
58. Peak marks a high point | peak
Manchester Phrasebank uses peak for a high point: “Production peaked in 1985.” A peak is a turning-point location, not automatically the highest value ever unless the time range is defined. Say peaked at 120 in Q3 or reached a five-year peak when relevant.
59. Peak at / peak in / peak of | peak grammar
“Sales peaked at 120 units.” “Sales peaked in July.” “A peak of 120 units was recorded.” These structures encode value, time and noun form differently.
60. Trough marks a low point | trough
Trough is the low-point counterpart to peak, common in economics, finance, cycles and data analysis. In less technical prose, low point may be clearer. “Demand reached a trough in February before recovering.”
61. Bottom out means stop falling at a low level | bottom out
Bottom out is a phrasal verb meaning a decline reaches its lowest point and stops falling. It is common in business and economic commentary. “Prices bottomed out in March.” Use it when the low point and subsequent stabilisation/recovery are supported.
62. Top out means stop rising at a high level | top out
Top out is the upward counterpart in some registers: “Growth topped out at 8%.” It sounds more journalistic/business-like than academic. Peaked at is often more neutral.
63. Plateau means movement levels off after change | plateau
A plateau is a period in which a quantity stops rising/falling significantly after previous movement. “Performance improved rapidly and then plateaued.” The word describes a flat phase following change. It does not necessarily mean the system is stable in every sense.
64. Level off means become comparatively flat | level off
Manchester Phrasebank uses level off when projecting trends. “Demand rose for three months and then levelled off.” The phrase is often more natural than the noun plateau in general reporting.
65. Flatten can mean the slope reduces | flatten
A curve can flatten without becoming perfectly horizontal. “The growth curve began to flatten” means the rate of increase slowed. This may precede a plateau but does not prove one has been reached.
66. Stabilize means stop changing significantly / become regular | stabilize
Cambridge defines stabilize as becoming fixed or stopping change, and in business contexts becoming able to continue without unexpected changes. “Prices stabilized around $50.” This implies reduced movement around a level, not necessarily perfect constancy.
67. Stable level and steady rise are different | stable vs steady
“A stable level” means little change in the value. “A steady rise” means the value keeps increasing in a regular way. Confusing stable and steady creates an internal contradiction: a quantity cannot be both unchanged and steadily rising in the same dimension.
68. Stability can coexist with small fluctuations | stable within a range
Blood pressure, exchange rates or classroom scores can be described as broadly stable while moving within a narrow range. Stability is scale-dependent. Always consider the time horizon and acceptable variation.
69. Remain steady / remain stable / remain unchanged | persistence frames
Manchester Phrasebank uses expressions such as remain steady. Remain unchanged is strongest: no relevant change. Remain stable allows small bounded variation. Remain steady may mean a rate or level continues consistently.
70. Reversal means direction changes | reversal
A reversal occurs when a trend or movement changes direction: rise → fall, decline → growth. One small counter-movement may not justify calling it a reversal. The new direction should be meaningful relative to the time horizon.
71. Reverse / reverse course | verb frames
“The decline reversed in Q4.” “The policy trend reversed course after the election.” The second is more metaphorical. In data writing, simple reversed or turned upward/downward is often clearer.
72. Turn upward / turn downward names direction change plainly | turning point
“After reaching a trough, demand turned upward.” This is useful when you want descriptive language without implying a full structural reversal.
73. Turning point can be descriptive or interpretive | turning point
In a graph, a turning point may be where direction changes. In history or narrative, turning point can mean a decisive event. Do not assume the same technicality across genres.
74. Recovery means improvement after decline | recovery
A recovery generally follows deterioration or decline: demand fell, then recovered. Recovery does not necessarily mean return to the previous peak. “Partial recovery” or “recovered to 90% of the previous level” can be more precise.
75. Rebound suggests a relatively quick recovery | rebound
Rebound is common in economics, markets and performance: “Sales rebounded after the holiday slump.” It often sounds faster or more dynamic than recover. Again, register matters.
76. Bounce back is conversational | bounce back
“The business bounced back quickly.” This is natural in speech and journalism but less formal than recovered/rebounded. Vocabulary sophistication includes choosing simpler or more formal language to fit audience.
77. Deteriorate describes becoming worse, not merely lower | deterioration
Deteriorate is evaluative: quality, condition, health or performance becomes worse. A falling error rate is a decrease but an improvement, not deterioration. Direction and value judgment must remain separate.
78. Improve can occur through an increase or decrease | improvement depends on metric
Higher accuracy is improvement; lower error rate is also improvement. Therefore increase and improve are not synonyms. One describes numerical direction; the other evaluates whether the outcome is better.
79. Worsen can occur through a rise or fall | worsen
Costs rising may worsen affordability. Accuracy falling may worsen performance. The value direction depends on the metric. Avoid assuming “up = good” and “down = bad.”
80. Inflection point is technical and often misused | inflection point
In mathematics, an inflection point has a precise definition involving curvature. In business journalism, people often use it loosely for a turning point. Advanced learners should avoid technical-sounding misuse. If you mean direction changed, say turning point unless the mathematical concept is genuinely intended.
81. Break in trend / structural break are more technical | break
A structural break is a technical statistical/economic concept involving a change in the underlying relationship or process. “Trend changed” is not enough to prove a structural break. Use the technical term only with appropriate evidence.
82. Discontinuity means a break rather than smooth continuation | discontinuity
Discontinuity can describe an abrupt break in a series, process or relationship. It is technical in mathematics and causal inference. In general prose, abrupt break/change may be clearer.
83. Persistence asks whether movement lasts | persistence
A change may be temporary, persistent or permanent. Persistence describes continuation over time. “Inflation remained persistently high” says the high level continued, not merely that it peaked once.
84. Persistent does not mean permanent | persistent ≠ permanent
A persistent problem lasts or recurs over a meaningful period, but it may eventually disappear. Permanent makes a much stronger claim. Do not upgrade duration vocabulary without evidence.
85. Temporary / transient describe limited duration | temporary / transient
Temporary is broad and common. Transient is more formal/technical and often describes a short-lived effect or state. “A transient spike” suggests a brief rise that quickly disappears.
86. Short-term and long-term are explicit horizon labels | time horizon
“Short-term volatility increased while the long-term trend remained stable.” This is possible because the two phrases refer to different time scales. Advanced analysis often resolves apparent contradictions by specifying horizon.
87. Structural suggests deeper system-level change | structural change
A structural change affects underlying organisation, relationships or long-term patterns rather than merely producing a temporary movement. The term is common in economics, labour markets and policy. Use it only when the change is genuinely system-level.
88. Cyclical change differs from structural change | cyclical vs structural
A cyclical downturn may reverse as the cycle changes. A structural decline may persist because the underlying system has changed. These distinctions matter in diagnosis: a temporary dip may require patience; a structural shift may require redesign.

When a graph or process becomes complicated, do not ask only “up or down?” Ask: Is the rate changing? Are movements repeated? Are swings small or volatile? Is there a peak, trough or plateau? Did direction truly reverse? Is the movement temporary, cyclical or structural? These questions determine the vocabulary.
Part III — Description, projection and explanation are different jobs | 第三部分:描述、预测与解释是三件不同的事
91. Description tells the reader what happened | description first
“Sales rose steadily from January to April, dipped in May and recovered in June.” This is descriptive. It reports direction and sequence without explaining why. Description should normally come before interpretation because readers need to see the pattern before they evaluate a mechanism.
92. Explanation asks why the pattern occurred | explanation is a second layer
“Sales fell in May because the main outlet closed temporarily.” This adds a causal explanation. The explanation needs evidence beyond the line itself. A graph shape cannot prove its cause.
93. Projection asks what may happen next | projection
Manchester Academic Phrasebank distinguishes trends from projections. A projection extends change into the future, usually under assumptions. “Sales are projected to rise to 150 units by December” is not a description of what already happened.
94. Projection and forecast are related but not identical | projection vs forecast
A projection often shows what would happen under stated assumptions. A forecast more directly presents an expected future outcome. In many fields the terms have formal conventions. If the source distinguishes them, preserve the distinction.
95. “Is projected to” is weaker/different than “will” | projected to
“Demand is projected to reach 200” signals modelling or scenario-based expectation. “Demand will reach 200” sounds more definite. Removing projected increases certainty and can misrepresent the source.

“Demand normalised after the holiday surge.” This suggests an abnormal or exceptional period ended. In statistics, normalize has technical meanings, so context matters. Do not use it casually in technical documents without checking the field definition.

Battery capacity, signal quality, material strength or model performance can degrade. The word describes worsening functional quality, not merely downward numeric movement. If a lower value is good, “decrease” may be appropriate while “degradation” is not.

Technology or behaviour adoption may begin slowly, accelerate, then level off as the market or population saturates. The vocabulary sequence might be: initial uptake → rapid growth → deceleration → plateau. This is more informative than saying “adoption increased.”

Uptake is common in technology, policy and health contexts for use/adoption of something. “Vaccine uptake rose” names adoption rate; it is not simply another word for growth in all domains.
160. Diffusion describes spread through a population/system | diffusion
Innovations, ideas or substances can diffuse, but the term has different technical meanings. In social science, diffusion may describe spread of an innovation; in physics, molecular processes. Do not use it merely as a stylish synonym for growth.
161. Population trends need birth, death and migration components | demographic trends
A population can grow more slowly because births fall, deaths rise, migration changes or combinations of these. Trend description and component explanation should be separated. “Population growth slowed” is not the same as “population declined.”

Reported cases can rise because true incidence rises, testing expands or reporting changes. A rise in reported counts is descriptive; a rise in underlying disease incidence may require additional evidence. Never let a trend noun hide measurement changes.

Mandarin often groups several English change relations under one broad word. 上升 may become rise, increase, climb, surge. 波动 may become fluctuation, variability, volatility. 稳定 may become stable, steady, unchanged, level. The learner’s job is therefore not to find one translation. It is to identify direction, speed, regularity, duration, evaluation and domain.
184. 趋势 can be trend, tendency or direction | 趋势不是 always trend

In learning, a plateau is common. In business data, levelled off may sound more natural. In technical systems, steady-state phase may have a precise meaning. Match the domain.

A rebound may recover only part of the previous loss. “价格反弹 5%” → prices rebounded 5%. If they returned to the earlier level, say so separately.

Metric rises after decline → recover. Activity begins again → resume. A system is brought back by an agent → restore. A value goes back to prior level → return to. Chinese 恢复 covers all four.
209. 逆转 can be reversal / reverse / turn around | direction change
“趋势逆转” → the trend reversed / there was a reversal. “扭转局面” may be turn the situation around, which is more active and evaluative. Do not use reverse automatically in every figurative context.

If the level stops moving much → stabilised. If swings narrow → became less volatile / variability declined. “趋稳” can describe different processes; do not translate it mechanically.

In market/economic Chinese, 企稳 may mean a decline stops and the series stabilises. English may use stabilise, bottom out, find a floor depending register. “Find a floor” is journalistic metaphor, not general academic language.

“价格从高点回落” → prices fell back from their peak. “通胀回落” may be inflation eased / declined. Ease is common in economic reporting but not universal.

Chinese 明显 may tempt learners to use significant. In research, that can imply statistical significance. Use marked, noticeable, clear when you mean visually/evidently noticeable without a statistical test.

If swings are wide → large/wide fluctuations. If sudden and unstable → high volatility. If both → say both when useful. Do not let one dramatic Chinese phrase hide which dimension is actually strong.

“价格基本稳定” → prices remained broadly/relatively stable. This allows minor movement. Unchanged would usually be too strong unless values truly did not move.

The repair is simple: use increase for an observed change; reserve trend for a general direction across a meaningful sequence.

Revenue grows 12% in Year 1, 7% in Year 2 and 3% in Year 3. Weak description: “Revenue declined.” Correct description: “Revenue continued to grow, but the growth rate slowed.” The level is still rising; only the pace of growth is falling. This distinction is fundamental in business, economics, population analysis and learning curves.

A metric rises by roughly two units each month. The learner writes, “The metric remained stable.” That contradicts the data. Better: “The metric rose steadily.” Stable describes a level with relatively little movement; steady can describe regular movement. One is about staying near a level; the other can describe consistency of change.

Temperature moves between 20°C and 22°C each day. Calling this “highly volatile” is excessive. “Temperature fluctuated within a narrow range” is more accurate. If a market price swings 20% in short unpredictable intervals, high volatility may be justified. The key dimensions are amplitude, suddenness and predictability.

A chart shows historical values to 2026 and projected values to 2030. A learner writes, “Demand reached 250 in 2030.” This incorrectly turns a projection into observed history. Better: “Demand is projected to reach 250 by 2030 under the model’s baseline assumptions.” Future status and assumptions belong in the sentence.

Company revenue rises 10%, but market share falls from 20% to 18%. Saying “the company’s market position improved” is not supported. The company sold more, but the total market grew even faster. A precise report separates the metrics: “Revenue increased by 10%, while market share declined by two percentage points.”

The class average stays at 75, but advanced students rise from 80 to 88 while struggling students fall from 70 to 62. “Performance remained stable” is true only at the aggregate average.
