Advanced English is not the maximum amount of information you can fit into one sentence. It is the amount your reader can recover accurately without unnecessary effort.
高级英语不是“每句话塞进最多信息”。高级英语是:在不让读者付出不必要解码成本的前提下,把足够的信息准确送达。

Compare two versions:

Dense: The post-intervention vocabulary retrieval performance variability reduction suggests improved learner response consistency.

Expanded: After the intervention, learners’ vocabulary retrieval scores varied less. This suggests that their responses became more consistent.

The first sentence is not necessarily “more advanced”. It is more compressed. Several relations—time, possession, measurement, comparison and interpretation—are packed into one noun-heavy structure. The second version uses more words but makes those relations easier to recover.

Linguistic research helps explain why. Douglas Biber and Bethany Gray’s work on academic English shows that modern academic prose is characterised by dense phrasal structures—especially heavily modified noun phrases—rather than simply by long subordinate clauses. Their analyses describe academic writing as increasingly compressed. More recent Cambridge research on CEFR text difficulty defines lexical density as the proportion of content words in a text and notes that higher lexical density generally means greater information density and greater processing demand for L2 readers.

Compression is not bad. Academic and professional writers need it. Technical terms allow experts to package large concepts efficiently. Noun phrases can connect information compactly. But Biber and Gray also show that compressed phrasal structures can make semantic relationships less explicit. The advanced learner therefore needs two abilities at once:

  • Compression: package information efficiently when reader knowledge allows it.
  • Expansion: unpack hidden relationships when clarity requires it.

Density is a resource, not a score.

Here the specific problem is: how densely should vocabulary and concepts be packaged in one sentence, paragraph or spoken turn?


1. Lexical density is not vocabulary difficulty | 词汇密度不等于“用了多少难词”

Lexical density is commonly described as the proportion of content words—nouns, lexical verbs, adjectives and many adverbs—relative to the total amount of language. A sentence can therefore be lexically dense even when none of its words is rare.

Rapid price changes create serious market instability.

The words are not especially exotic, but most carry substantive information.

2. Lexical density is not lexical diversity | 词汇密度与词汇多样性也不是一回事

Density asks how much informational vocabulary is packed into the text. Diversity asks how varied the vocabulary is. A paragraph can repeat a few high-value technical terms and still be dense. Another can use many different words while remaining relatively conversational.

3. Information density is the practical learner concept | 对学习者来说,更重要的是 information load

A sentence becomes difficult when too many new relationships must be recovered at once:

  • new terminology;
  • new causal relationship;
  • new comparison;
  • new time relationship;
  • new stance;
  • new category structure;
  • several embedded modifiers.

The reader’s problem is not simply word count. It is the number and explicitness of relationships.

4. Academic English often compresses information into phrases | 学术英语常把原本可以用句子表达的关系压进短语

Biber and Gray describe modern academic prose as making extensive use of:

  • attributive adjectives;
  • nouns used before other nouns;
  • prepositional phrases modifying nouns;
  • appositive noun phrases;
  • nominalisations.

These devices can package large amounts of information efficiently.

5. Compression is useful because experts share background | 为什么专家文本可以更密?因为很多关系已经不用重新解释

An expert reader may process short-term memory retrieval performance quickly because the conceptual categories are already familiar.

A novice may need:

how well learners can retrieve information from short-term memory

Same broad concept, different packaging.

A sentence can be elegant for a specialist and opaque for a parent. Do not judge density without identifying the reader.

First mention:

Retrieval practice is a learning activity in which learners try to recall previously studied information without simply rereading it.

Later:

Retrieval practice improved delayed recall.

Once the concept is established, compression becomes cheaper for the reader.

9. Define once, compress later | 一个高效原则:先展开建立概念,再压缩使用

This is especially useful for technical terms. Do not repeatedly re-explain a stable concept, but do not compress before the reader has built it.

10. Nominalisation raises density quickly | 名词化是最常见的信息压缩器之一

Expanded:

When the team implemented the new process, response time improved.

Compressed:

Process implementation improved response time.

The second is shorter and denser. It also removes explicit agency and timing.

You may have five individually legitimate nominalisations that collectively overload one sentence.

Likely according to whom? A source? The writer? A model? Expand when attribution matters.

48. Compression can hide uncertainty | 抽象名词看起来很稳,证据其实可能很弱

The effect presupposes there is an effect. If the result is uncertain, the possible effect or a clause may be more accurate.

49. Expansion is not “dumbing down” | 把关系展开,不代表把思想变简单

You can preserve a sophisticated concept while making its internal logic explicit.

50. Compression is not “making it academic” | 句子变密,也不自动变学术

Academic prose often uses compressed structures, but good academic prose also needs readers to reconstruct the intended relationship correctly.

A sentence can be:

  • low density + simple vocabulary;
  • high density + simple vocabulary;
  • low density + specialised vocabulary;
  • high density + specialised vocabulary.

The fourth condition usually demands the most from readers.

Every phrase is legal-looking. The process is harder to recover.

Her tutor keeps one useful nominalisation:

We reviewed the errors and identified two recurring patterns. This review led us to change the feedback sequence, which reduced confusion during revision.

The sentences are easy but conceptually weak.

Revision:

Two factors may affect the result: participant characteristics and measurement quality.

The revised sentence is denser and clearer because it names the categories precisely.

The technical concept survives. The spoken packaging changes.

Two engineers both understand latency, throughput, failover, redundancy. Replacing those terms with long plain-English explanations would slow the discussion. Shared terminology lowers communication cost.

Do not score yourself on how many words you removed. Score three things: recoverability, precision and efficiency.

Compress what the reader already owns. Expand what the reader still has to build.

Use technical terms when they save shared work. Use nominalisation when a concept deserves to become a stable object. Use dense noun phrases when their relationships are conventional and recoverable.

But if the reader must guess who acted, what caused what, which noun modifies which, or whether a phrase expresses time, purpose or ownership, the sentence has transferred too much work to the reader.

Advanced vocabulary gives you compression power. Advanced communication tells you when to release that pressure.
