Quick read | 先看最重要的

Do not start with rare descriptive words. Start with contrasts you can see, feel and use.

不要从很难、很少见的形容词开始。先学你看得见、感觉得到、每天会用的对比词。

First ten pairs:

big 大small 小
hot 热cold 冷
new 新old 旧 / 老
good 好bad 不好 / 差
happy 开心sad 难过
clean 干净dirty 脏
open 开着的closed 关着的
long 长short 短
fast 快slow 慢
easy 容易hard / difficult 难

Then use them immediately:

  • a big bag
  • cold water
  • a new phone
  • a clean room
  • The door is open.
  • I am happy.

Why opposites help beginners | 为什么反义词适合初学者?

A contrast gives a word a clear boundary.

big 时,同时看到 small,大脑更容易知道“big 的意义边界在哪里”。

But opposites are not always perfect mathematical pairs. good/bad, young/old and easy/difficult work well as beginner contrasts, but real language has many middle possibilities.

所以“反义词”是学习工具,不是说世界永远只有两个极端。

Research floor | 研究底线

Cambridge Young Learners wordlists include Pre-A1 adjectives such as big, clean, closed, good, happy, long, new, old, open, sad, short, small and young, with additional A1 descriptors such as bad, busy, cold, difficult and easy. British Council A1–A2 Vocabulary similarly organises beginner vocabulary by practical topics and practises meaning, pronunciation and spelling.

Size words | 大小

biga big room
smalla small bag
longa long road
short短 / 矮a short line / a short person
tall高(人/直立物体)a tall man
lowa low table

Big is not always “important” | big 不一定只表示尺寸

Beginners should learn one concrete meaning first:

  • a big bag
  • a big room

Later, big can appear in broader meanings such as “a big problem”. Do not load every meaning on Day 1.

Long and tall | long 和 tall

long usually describes length.

tall commonly describes height of people and many upright things.

  • a long road
  • long hair
  • a tall boy
  • a tall building

中文都可能涉及“长/高”,所以短语比单独翻译更重要。

Temperature words | 温度

hothot tea
warm温暖 / 温的warm water
cool凉爽 / 凉cool air
coldcold water

Notice that real language has a scale: hot → warm → cool → cold.

因此,反义词练习之后还可以加入“中间词”,让意义更精确。

Age and condition | 新旧与年龄

newa new phone
old旧 / 老an old book / an old man
young年轻 / 年幼a young child

old can describe an old object or an older person. The Chinese translation changes with the noun.

  • an old chair — 一把旧椅子
  • an old man — 一位年长的男人

This is a good example of why vocabulary needs context.

Quality words | 好坏

goodgood food
bad坏 / 差bad weather
nice不错 / 友好 / 宜人的a nice person
great很棒a great idea

Do not treat good, nice, great as perfect synonyms. A beginner can first use good widely, then learn the others through phrases.

Emotion words | 情绪

happy开心I am happy.
sad难过She is sad.
angry生气He is angry.
afraid害怕I am afraid.
tiredI am tired.
busyShe is busy.

Emotion adjectives often follow be:

  • I am happy.
  • You are tired.
  • He is busy.
  • They are sad.

Do not say “I very happy” | very 不能代替 be

Mandarin does not organise adjective sentences exactly like English. In simple English:

  • I am happy.
  • I am very happy.

Not: *I very happy.

本课不展开完整 be 动词语法,只提醒:形容词进入句子时要学习整个句型。

Clean and dirty | 干净与脏

  • a clean room
  • a dirty room
  • a clean cup
  • dirty shoes

These words are easy to connect to real objects. Point, say, compare, then recall later.

Open and closed | 开与关

  • an open door
  • a closed door
  • The window is open.
  • The shop is closed.

Notice open can also be a verb:

  • Open the door. — 动词
  • The door is open. — 形容词状态

Do not force all uses into one explanation. Learn the sentence pattern.

Speed words | 快慢

fasta fast car
slowa slow bus
quick快的 / 迅速的a quick answer

For the first stage, fast/slow is a useful visible contrast.

Easy and difficult | 容易与困难

  • an easy question
  • a difficult question
  • This is easy.
  • This is difficult.

hard can mean “difficult” or “not soft”. Learn one meaning with context.

  • a hard question — 难的问题
  • a hard table — 硬的桌面 / material sense

Soft and hard | 软与硬

  • a soft bed
  • a hard chair
  • soft bread

Context prevents confusion with hard = difficult.

Light and heavy | 轻与重

light轻的 / 光(另一个词义)a light bag
heavy重的a heavy bag

light is another multi-meaning word:

  • a light bag — 轻的包
  • the light — 灯 / 光

Full and empty | 满与空

  • a full bottle
  • an empty bottle
  • The cup is full.
  • The bag is empty.

Real containers make these adjectives easy to demonstrate safely.

Right and wrong | 对与错

  • the right answer
  • the wrong answer
  • You are right.
  • This is wrong.

right can also mean “右边”.

  • the right answer — 正确答案
  • turn right — 向右转

Again: one spelling can carry more than one meaning.

Same and different | 相同与不同

  • the same colour
  • a different colour
  • They are the same.
  • They are different.

This pair is especially useful for comparison tasks.

Colours are adjective vocabulary too | 颜色也是基础描述词

Useful colours:

black · white · red · blue · green · yellow · orange · pink · purple · brown · grey/gray

  • a red bag
  • a blue book
  • green tea
  • a black phone

Cambridge Pre-A1 wordlists include many core colour adjectives, reinforcing their early usefulness.

Adjective before noun | 形容词放在名词前

  • a big bag
  • a small room
  • hot water
  • a new phone
  • a clean table

English often places the adjective before the noun in this basic pattern.

Adjective after be | 形容词也可以放在 be 后

  • The bag is big.
  • The room is small.
  • The water is cold.
  • My phone is new.
  • I am happy.

Learn both frames:

  • a + adjective + noun
  • noun + be + adjective

One adjective, many nouns | 一个形容词配多个名词

new

  • a new phone
  • a new book
  • a new bag
  • a new teacher

small

  • a small room
  • a small cup
  • a small dog
  • a small problem

This builds a word network instead of one frozen phrase.

One noun, many adjectives | 一个名词配多个形容词

room

  • a big room
  • a small room
  • a clean room
  • a dirty room
  • a warm room
  • a cold room

Changing one adjective teaches contrast and sentence flexibility.

Very | 用 very 扩展描述

  • very big
  • very small
  • very good
  • very cold
  • very happy

Beginner frame:

This is very ___.

I am very ___.

Not | 用 not 建立另一种对比

  • It is not big.
  • It is not cold.
  • I am not tired.

“not big” is not always exactly equal to “small”. Language can describe a middle area. This is why opposites are helpful but not identical to negation.

Opposite card practice | 反义词卡片

Front: big

Back: small · a big room / a small room

But do not make every card only “word → opposite”. Also test meaning and use.

Picture contrast | 图片对比

Use two pictures:

  • big bag / small bag
  • clean room / dirty room
  • open door / closed door
  • happy face / sad face

Point and say the correct adjective.

Real-object contrast | 实物对比

Compare two safe objects:

  • This book is big. That book is small.
  • This bottle is full. That bottle is empty.
  • This bag is light. That bag is heavy.

Do not force unnatural opposites | 不要硬凑反义词

Some words have no single perfect opposite in every context. Learn common contrasts, but always check real use.

词汇学习不是“每个词必须找一个反义词”。只有自然、常用的对比才值得优先学。

Chinese translation can hide usage differences | 中文翻译可能遮住用法差异

For example, Chinese “高” can map to different English words depending on the object:

  • a tall person
  • a high wall / high price

中文“轻”也可能对应 physical lightness or other abstract senses. Learn through noun partners.

Do not stop at the opposite | 不要只会背反义词

If you know big ↔ small but cannot say a big bag, the word is still isolated.

The full learning target is:

meaning → contrast → phrase → sentence → delayed recall.

Mini reading | 超简单阅读

“My room is small but clean. My table is old. My phone is new. The window is open. The water is cold. I am happy at home.”

Find six adjectives.

Then replace each with another adjective and see whether the sentence still makes sense.

Mini writing | 超简单写作

Describe five real things:

  1. My room is ___.
  2. My phone is ___.
  3. My bag is ___.
  4. The water is ___.
  5. I am ___.

Mini speaking | 超简单口语

Choose three objects and one feeling.

“This is my bag. It is small and new. This is my book. It is old. The water is cold. I am happy.”

Mini listening | 超简单听力

Ask someone to say one adjective. Point to the matching picture or object.

Then reverse: look at a picture and say the adjective.

Adjective sorting | 形容词分类

Sort into:

  • size
  • temperature
  • quality
  • emotion
  • condition
  • speed

After sorting, mix them again for retrieval.

Meaning scales | 不只有两个极端

After basic opposites are stable, add a middle:

  • hot → warm → cool → cold
  • big → medium-sized → small
  • easy → okay / manageable → difficult

This prevents the beginner from thinking all meaning is binary.

Politeness and people descriptions | 描述人要注意礼貌

Some appearance adjectives can be sensitive. Do not turn beginner vocabulary practice into comments about classmates’ bodies.

Use neutral objects, fictional pictures or safe descriptions. British Council Appearance vocabulary can support later controlled work on describing appearance.
