A word you can recognise only on the page is not yet fully available vocabulary.
一个只能在纸面上认出来、却听不出也说不稳的词,还没有真正进入完整词汇系统。
You read analysis without difficulty, but hesitate when saying it. You know photograph, yet fail to recognise photography in speech because the stress has moved. You know the noun record, but a speaker says the verb record with a different stress pattern and the word sounds unfamiliar. You recognise comfortable in writing, yet your mental pronunciation contains more syllables than the version you hear.
这类问题不是“词汇量不够”,也不一定是“听力太差”。很多时候,视觉词汇和声音词汇没有完全连接。你知道拼写与意思,却没有建立足够稳定的声音形式。
A mature vocabulary entry contains more than spelling and meaning. It includes pronunciation, stress, syllable shape, common phrase rhythm and enough auditory memory for the word to be recognised in connected speech. This is especially important for advanced learners because many C1–C2 words are first encountered in reading rather than conversation.
This lesson is deliberately vocabulary-specific. eduKateSengkang’s separate Advanced English Lesson No.007 owns the broader system of intelligibility, sentence stress, rhythm and intonation. Lesson No.014 asks a narrower question:
How do you turn a written word you know into a word you can hear, pronounce and retrieve reliably?
怎样把“看得懂的词”变成“听得出、说得稳、需要时叫得出来的词”?
The target is intelligible, flexible lexical control—not accent erasure. English has legitimate regional and international pronunciation variation. Use strong learner dictionaries to hear established variants and build a pronunciation that listeners can identify reliably.
目标不是消灭口音。目标是让单词的关键信号足够稳定:音节数量大致正确,主要重音清楚,关键辅音和元音不至于把词变成另一个词,听力系统也能把真实声音接回你已经知道的意思。
1. Visual vocabulary and auditory vocabulary are not identical | 视觉词汇与听觉词汇不是同一件事
You can know a word in one channel more strongly than another.
| Channel | Possible learner state |
|---|---|
| Reading | I recognise the spelling immediately. |
| Meaning | I understand the word in context. |
| Writing | I can spell and use it accurately. |
| Pronunciation | I hesitate or stress the wrong syllable. |
| Listening | I fail to recognise the word when spoken. |
| Speaking | I replace it with a simpler word because I do not trust the pronunciation. |
The learner therefore needs a multi-channel vocabulary model.
高级词汇不是一个“知道 / 不知道”的开关。一个词可能在阅读中是绿色,在口语中还是黄色,在听力中甚至是红色。
2. The pronunciation entry should be learned when the word is learned | 不要等到口语课才补发音
When you promote a word into active vocabulary, attach its sound immediately:
- dictionary audio;
- primary stress;
- approximate syllable count;
- one natural phrase;
- one spoken example.
If you postpone pronunciation for months, the written form can develop a private mental pronunciation that later has to be unlearned.
尤其是高级阅读词汇,很多词第一次出现时没有声音。如果你自己默读出了一个错误版本,并且重复了几十次,这个错误版本也会变熟。
3. Start with word stress | 第一优先级:单词重音
For many multisyllabic English words, primary stress is one of the strongest recognition cues. A listener expects one syllable to stand out through a combination of prominence, length, pitch movement and vowel quality.
Mark stress visibly in your notes. You do not need a complex notation system.
- ANalyse
- aNALysis
- anaLYTical
- PHOtograph
- phoTOGraphy
- photoGRAPHic
The spelling family remains visible while the stress moves. That movement can make a familiar family sound unfamiliar.
词族学习必须包括重音变化。
4. Stress can move when the word family changes | 后缀变化以后,重音可能搬家
Useful families to hear and compare include:
| Family | Stress movement |
|---|---|
| analyse → analysis → analytical | ANalyse → aNALysis → anaLYTical |
| photograph → photography → photographic | PHOtograph → phoTOGraphy → photoGRAPHic |
| economy → economic → economical | eCONomy → ecoNOMic → ecoNOMical |
| origin → original → originality | ORigin → oRIGinal → origiNALity |
Exact pronunciation varies across accents; use dictionary audio for the variety you are learning. The learning principle is stable: derivation can change stress.
不要只看词根相同就假设声音结构也完全不变。
5. Reduced vowels make unstressed syllables harder to hear | 非重读音节会弱化,所以“看起来的元音”不一定完整出现
English often reduces vowels in unstressed syllables. One common reduced vowel is the schwa /ə/. This is one reason written vocabulary can sound shorter, weaker or less distinct than learners expect.
For example, a learner may expect every written vowel in a long word to receive a full, careful sound. Natural speech often does not work that way.
Do not try to pronounce every written vowel with equal force. Listen to the whole stress pattern.
中文母语学习者可以特别注意:英语的单词重音与普通话声调不是同一个系统。不要把每个音节都说得同样完整、同样突出。
6. Learn syllable shape from sound, not spelling alone | 音节数量要靠听,不要只数字母
English spelling does not map transparently onto syllables. Words such as comfortable, vegetable, business, interesting may be pronounced with fewer or less distinct syllables than a learner predicts from spelling, depending on accent and speaking style.
The practical method:
- listen to dictionary audio;
- tap the perceived syllables;
- mark the stressed syllable;
- repeat the whole word, not isolated syllables forever;
- put the word into a phrase.
Dictionary audio is the reference point; spelling is not enough.
7. Stress can distinguish noun and verb uses | 有些熟词靠重音区分名词与动词
A useful group of common two-syllable words shows a noun/adjective tendency toward first-syllable stress and a verb tendency toward second-syllable stress. It is a tendency with important examples, not a universal rule.
| Noun / adjective | Verb |
|---|---|
| REcord | reCORD |
| PREsent | preSENT |
| CONduct | conDUCT |
| PROject | proJECT |
| OBject | obJECT |
| PERmit | perMIT |
| CONtract | conTRACT |
These words are excellent examples of why vocabulary knowledge includes pronunciation and grammar together.
8. Do not turn the noun–verb pattern into a universal law | 不要把一个常见模式变成错误万能规则
English contains many exceptions and words whose stress does not follow this pattern. Treat the examples above as lexical items worth learning, not as proof that every two-syllable noun/verb pair behaves identically.
高级学习的原则仍然是:有规律就利用规律,有例外就尊重词条。
9. Pronunciation can reveal part of speech | 声音也会帮助你判断词性
Sentence:
We need to reCORD the REcord accurately.
The stress contrast supports grammar and meaning. Listening vocabulary therefore includes more than recognising phonemes; stress can signal lexical category.
10. Pronunciation can separate familiar word senses | 同一个拼写,不同词性与词义可能带来不同读法
Conduct is especially useful after Lesson No.013:
- CONduct — behaviour, noun;
- conDUCT research — carry out, verb;
- conDUCT electricity — transmit, verb.
Sense, part of speech and pronunciation reinforce one another.
11. Spelling can hide sound changes inside word families | 拼写相似,不代表每个音都保持不变
Word families often preserve spelling relationships more strongly than sound relationships. Compare families such as:
- sign → signal / signature;
- define → definition;
- pronounce → pronunciation;
- maintain → maintenance;
- analyse → analysis.
Do not pronounce the derived word by mechanically reading the base word and suffix separately. Use dictionary audio.
词族帮助记拼写和意义,但声音需要单独确认。
12. “Pronunciation” itself is a useful warning word | pronunciation 就是一个经典提醒
The verb is pronounce; the noun is pronunciation, not “pronounciation”. The spelling and vowel pattern change. This is an excellent demonstration of why word-family knowledge should include spelling and sound, not only suffixes.
高级学习者也会被熟悉词族误导。越熟悉,越容易凭感觉自动拼、自动读。
13. Listening recognition depends on your stored pronunciation | 你脑内存的声音版本,会影响真实听力识别
If your internal version of a word has the wrong stress or extra syllables, the real spoken version may not match your lexical memory. You hear the sound but fail to activate the known meaning.
This explains a common experience: “I knew the word after reading the transcript. Why didn’t I hear it?”
可能不是你“不认识”。可能是你认识的是一个错误或过度书面化的声音版本。
14. Use listen → identify → see, not always see → pronounce | 练习时不要永远先看拼写
For some vocabulary sessions, reverse the usual order:
- listen to the word or phrase;
- guess which known word it is;
- reveal spelling;
- compare your internal pronunciation;
- repeat in a phrase.
This tests auditory access rather than visual recognition.
15. Then reverse again: see → pronounce → verify | 再做反向:看词→自己读→听词典
- see the word;
- pronounce it before audio;
- mark your predicted stress;
- play dictionary audio;
- compare;
- correct;
- use it in a sentence.
Your error becomes diagnostic information.
不要只“跟着音频重复”。先做一次自己的预测,才能发现你原来的内部模型哪里错。
16. Learn pronunciation inside a phrase | 单词不要永远单独练
- substantial evidence;
- a plausible explanation;
- allocate resources;
- mitigate risk;
- underlying cause;
- consistent with the evidence.
A phrase gives the word a real rhythmic environment and connects sound to collocation.
第005课把词变主动;第014课给主动词汇补上声音。
17. Learn one phrase before one sentence | 从短词块逐渐扩展到整句
Target: plausible.
- plausible;
- plausible explanation;
- a plausible explanation;
- That is a plausible explanation.
- That is a plausible explanation, but the evidence is limited.
Each layer preserves the word while adding surrounding language.
18. Pronunciation practice should preserve meaning | 发音练习也要保住词义
Do not repeat an advanced word twenty times as meaningless sound. After three or four repetitions, connect it to meaning:
- definition;
- collocation;
- contrast word;
- personal sentence.
Sound practice and semantic learning should reinforce each other.
19. Mandarin learners may need to protect final consonants | 中文母语学习者可特别注意词尾辅音
Mandarin and English organise syllables differently. Some Mandarin-speaking learners may reduce or weaken English final consonants, especially in dense clusters. This can affect word identity and grammar.
Examples worth checking carefully include:
- risk / risks / risked;
- text / texts;
- world / worlds;
- worked;
- asked;
- changed.
The goal is not exaggerated final sounds. It is enough acoustic information for the listener to identify the word and grammatical form.
注意:这是“部分学习者可能出现的模式”,不是对所有中文母语者的固定判断。用录音检查自己的实际表现。
20. Consonant clusters can hide known vocabulary | 辅音群会让熟词在听力里“消失”
Words such as strengths, contexts, prompts, constraints contain several consonants close together. In connected speech, learners may fail to segment them correctly even when the written vocabulary is familiar.
Practise the meaningful units:
- constraint → constraints;
- prompt → prompts;
- context → contexts;
- strength → strengths.
Keep the grammatical ending audible enough to preserve number or tense.
21. Do not add extra vowels inside clusters | 小心为了“方便发音”在辅音之间加多余元音
When an English consonant cluster is unfamiliar, learners may insert a vowel to make it easier to pronounce. That can add a syllable and make the word harder to recognise.
The repair is gradual:
- listen;
- slow the cluster slightly;
- keep consonants connected;
- avoid inserting a full extra vowel;
- return to normal phrase speed.
22. /v/ and /w/ deserve word-specific checking | /v/ 与 /w/ 的区别要放进具体词汇
Rather than practising abstract sounds forever, connect them to high-value words:
- value;
- valid;
- variable;
- view;
- work;
- worth;
- wide.
Record minimal or near-minimal contrasts only when they solve your actual intelligibility problem.
23. /θ/ and /ð/ matter when they carry common words | /θ/ 与 /ð/ 也要优先练高价值词
- theory;
- method;
- therefore;
- although;
- within;
- rather;
- these;
- those.
A substitution that remains intelligible may not require obsessive correction. Prioritise cases where the listener is likely to misidentify the word.
目标是可懂度与稳定度,不是声音完美主义。
24. Vowel distinctions should be trained through useful lexical contrasts | 元音区别也要通过真实词汇练
Different learners have different difficulty patterns. Build a personal list only when a vowel contrast repeatedly causes confusion in words you use.
Do not spend hours on an abstract sound pair that never affects your communication.
发音训练也要 obey first weak link:先修真正影响识别的地方。
25. Pronunciation variants are normal | 同一个词可能有不止一种标准读法
British and American dictionaries sometimes provide different pronunciations. Even within one variety, more than one accepted pronunciation may exist.
Do not treat every difference as an error. Record the version you intend to use consistently, while training your ear to recognise common alternatives.
口语输出可以稳定一个版本;听力输入要能容纳合理变体。
26. Dictionary audio should be part of the vocabulary workflow | 词典音频不是附加按钮,是词汇学习的一部分
Use a strong learner dictionary such as Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary or Cambridge Dictionary. When learning a target word:
- read the intended sense;
- play audio;
- mark stress;
- listen again without looking;
- repeat;
- check phrase examples;
- record your own version;
- compare.
The dictionary completes the lexical entry.
27. IPA is a useful tool, not a compulsory identity | IPA 可以帮助,但不是唯一道路
International Phonetic Alphabet notation can help learners distinguish sounds and locate stress. But you do not need to become a phonetics specialist before improving vocabulary pronunciation.
A practical hierarchy:
- audio first;
- stress mark second;
- IPA when spelling is misleading or a sound distinction matters.
Use IPA to solve problems, not to make the notebook look technical.
28. Build a pronunciation card | 建立“声音词汇卡”
| Field | Example: analysis |
|---|---|
| Word | analysis |
| Meaning | detailed examination |
| Stress | a-NAL-y-sis |
| Audio | dictionary audio checked |
| Family | analyse / analysis / analytical |
| Collocation | conduct an analysis |
| My sentence | The analysis identifies two constraints. |
| Listening cue | middle stressed syllable |
One card now connects meaning, spelling, sound and use.
29. Build word-family sound cards | 词族卡也要加入重音变化
Target family:
- economy;
- economic;
- economical;
- economically.
Do not merely write noun/adjective/adverb. Listen to each form and mark the stressed syllable. Then use each in a phrase.
30. Build noun–verb sound contrast cards | 名词动词重音对比卡
| Noun sentence | Verb sentence |
|---|---|
| Keep a clear REcord. | Please reCORD the result. |
| The PROject is complete. | We proJECT higher demand. |
| Professional CONduct matters. | They conDUCT research. |
| I object to the OBject. | I obJECT to the change. |
Use dictionary audio for each lexical item. The contrast is the learning target.
31. Use “hear the family” drills | 词族听辨训练
Have someone or an audio source say one family member. Identify it before seeing the spelling.
- analyse;
- analysis;
- analytical.
Then reverse: see the meaning/function and produce the correct family member aloud.
词族真正主动化以后,声音和语法都会帮助你选择正确词形。
32. Use “listen before transcript” drills | 听力先不看 transcript
- listen to a short sentence;
- write the advanced words you hear;
- compare with transcript;
- mark words you knew visually but missed auditorily;
- play them in isolation;
- return to the sentence.
This creates a personal “known but not heard” vocabulary list.
33. Build a “known on paper, missed by ear” log | 建立“纸上认识、耳朵漏掉”的词汇库
| Word | Why I missed it | Repair |
|---|---|---|
| analysis | wrong internal stress | family stress drill |
| comfortable | expected extra syllable | audio + phrase repetition |
| record (verb) | expected noun stress | noun–verb contrast |
| constraints | cluster + plural ending | singular/plural listening pair |
Now listening errors become vocabulary diagnostics.
34. Shadowing should preserve lexical stress | 跟读时先守住单词重音
Before copying sentence melody, make sure the target word itself remains recognisable. If you shadow a phrase containing analysis, do not sacrifice its lexical stress while chasing the speaker’s overall rhythm.
Pronunciation hierarchy:
- word identity;
- word stress;
- phrase grouping;
- sentence rhythm/intonation.
The broader rhythm work belongs to the general Advanced English pronunciation lesson.
35. Pronunciation affects confidence because it affects retrieval | 发音不稳,会让主动词汇在口语中自动“降级”
You may know plausible but avoid saying it because you are uncertain about pronunciation. Under pressure, you substitute possible. The semantic distinction is lost not because you forgot the meaning, but because the sound form is unreliable.
This is why pronunciation belongs inside active-vocabulary training.
36. Train “meaning → spoken word” | 从意思直接提取声音
- “believable but not proven” → plausible;
- “factor limiting options” → constraint;
- “reduce severity of risk” → mitigate;
- “assign resources for a purpose” → allocate;
- “existing beneath the obvious surface” → underlying.
Say the word before writing it. Then write it. This connects semantic retrieval to phonological retrieval.
37. Train “heard word → meaning” | 再从声音直接回到意思
Use dictionary audio or teacher recording. Hear the word without spelling and explain it in simple English.
Advanced vocabulary needs both directions:
- meaning → sound;
- sound → meaning.
视觉拼写可以作为第三条路线,而不是永远的必经桥梁。
38. Train “heard phrase → target word” | 在词块里识别,而不是只听孤立单词
- substantial progress;
- plausible explanation;
- allocate resources;
- mitigate the impact;
- underlying assumption.
Phrase-level recognition is closer to real listening than isolated vocabulary quizzes.
39. Train “misheard word repair” | 听错以后要找原因,不只看答案
If you miss a word, classify the cause:
- wrong stress in my memory;
- unexpected vowel reduction;
- consonant cluster;
- regional variant;
- word boundary in connected speech;
- new sense of familiar word;
- truly unknown vocabulary.
Different causes need different repairs.
40. Worked case: Maren knows “analysis” only visually | 案例一:Maren 只在视觉上认识 analysis
Maren reads analysis daily. In discussion, however, she hesitates and says study instead. Her tutor asks her to pronounce analyse, analysis, analytical. The stress pattern is unstable.
Repair sequence:
- listen to all three dictionary entries;
- mark stress;
- say each in one collocation;
- contrast the family aloud;
- give a 30-second explanation using analysis twice naturally;
- return two days later without notes.
中文分析:问题不是再学一个同义词,而是把已经知道的词补全到声音通道。
41. Worked case: Iona misses “record” because stress changed | 案例二:Iona 因重音变化漏听 record
Iona hears: “We need to record the result.” She knows record as a noun but fails to recognise the verb immediately.
She builds a pair:
- Keep a clear REcord.
- Please reCORD the result.
Then she adds conduct, project and object. The lesson becomes a reusable stress pattern rather than one isolated correction.
中文分析:词义和词性变化时,声音也可能提供线索。听力词汇深度包括这种识别。
42. Worked case: Leonie can say the word alone but loses it in a phrase | 案例三:Leonie 单独会读,放进词块就散
Leonie can pronounce substantial carefully. But in “substantial progress”, she slows down, stresses every syllable and breaks the phrase.
Repair:
- substantial;
- substantial progress;
- made substantial progress;
- She made substantial progress this month.
The phrase grows gradually while lexical identity remains stable.
中文分析:会读单词不等于会在真实句子里提取。词块是从“单词发音”走向“口语词汇”的桥。
43. The FENCE sound-form system | FENCE 声音词汇系统
| Fence | Question | Action |
|---|---|---|
| F0 Diagnose | Meaning problem or sound problem? | separate channels |
| F1 Audio | What does the dictionary actually say? | listen before guessing |
| F2 Stress | Which syllable is prominent? | mark primary stress |
| F3 Shape | How many syllables/clusters matter? | map spoken form |
| F4 Family | Does stress shift across forms? | compare derivations |
| F5 Phrase | Can I say it in a collocation? | chunk practice |
| F6 Recognition | Can I hear it without spelling? | audio → meaning |
| F7 Production | Can I retrieve it from meaning? | meaning → spoken word |
| F8 Transfer | Can I use/hear it in a new sentence? | new context |
44. Build a pronunciation priority list | 发音也要分优先级
Prioritise words that are:
- important to your work/study;
- frequently spoken;
- repeatedly misheard;
- avoided in your speech;
- likely to be confused with another word;
- part of an important word family.
You do not need perfect pronunciation for every rare receptive word.
45. Receptive pronunciation and productive pronunciation are different targets | 听得出与说得出,也可以分开发展
You may want to recognise several regional variants while producing one stable form yourself. That is efficient.
For rare technical terms you only read, recognition may be enough. For presentation vocabulary, reliable production matters.
学习资源要跟使用需求匹配。
46. Do not chase accent perfection | 不要把高级词汇课变成“口音消除工程”
Pronunciation improvement should make vocabulary easier to understand and retrieve. It should not create fear of speaking.
Ask whether the word is:
- recognisable;
- stress-stable;
- distinguishable from important neighbours;
- comfortable enough for real-time use.
That is a practical standard.
47. Use recordings as evidence | 录音比“我觉得自己说得对”更可靠
- say the target phrase;
- record;
- play dictionary audio;
- compare stress and syllable shape;
- record again;
- use it inside a new sentence.
Do not compare your voice quality or identity. Compare the lexical cues that matter.
48. Use slow practice only as a bridge | 慢读只是桥,不是最终速度
Slowing a difficult word helps you identify parts. But if you only practise in exaggerated slow motion, the vocabulary may still fail at normal speed.
- slow and accurate;
- moderate phrase speed;
- normal sentence speed;
- spontaneous use.
Gradually restore real communication conditions.
49. Use “three clean repetitions, then meaning” | 不要机械重复五十遍
A useful rule of thumb for this lesson:
- three careful repetitions;
- one collocation;
- one personal sentence;
- one delayed return.
More repetition is not automatically better if attention disappears.
50. Use contrast only where confusion exists | 最小对立训练要解决真实混淆
If listeners repeatedly confuse two words in your speech, build a contrast drill. If not, do not fill the week with arbitrary minimal pairs.
Pronunciation should remain connected to your vocabulary needs.
51. Academic vocabulary needs oral forms too | 学术词汇不能只会写
- analysis;
- criterion;
- hypothesis;
- methodology;
- significant;
- variable;
- empirical;
- interpretation;
- correlation;
- causation.
If you present research, participate in seminars or listen to lectures, these words need reliable sound forms.
52. Professional vocabulary needs oral forms too | 职场高级词汇也需要声音版本
- feasibility;
- allocation;
- constraint;
- mitigation;
- implementation;
- operational;
- reliability;
- prioritise;
- stakeholder;
- accountability.
A word that you avoid saying cannot fully support meetings, interviews or presentations.
53. Word families reduce learning cost when sound is included | 词族带声音一起学,反而更省成本
Instead of separately learning analyse, analysis, analytical months apart, compare them once as a family. You learn meaning links, spelling links and stress movement together.
This is deeper but more efficient.
54. Pronunciation can reveal weak word-family knowledge | 发音错误有时暴露的是词族知识不完整
A learner may correctly use analysis but pronounce it as if stress remained where it is in analyse. The problem is not only sound. The family has been stored visually, not phonologically.
Repair the family, not just the single token.
55. The “hear–say–write–use” cycle | 听—说—写—用 四通道循环
- Hear: identify the word from audio.
- Say: pronounce it with stable stress.
- Write: spell it accurately.
- Use: place it in a meaningful sentence.
Then reverse:
- meaning cue;
- say the word;
- write it;
- hear dictionary audio;
- compare.
This integrates the lexical representation.
56. Build a personal “sound-risk” list | 建立个人“声音高风险词”清单
- words you avoid saying;
- words frequently misheard;
- families with moving stress;
- words whose spelling misleads you;
- words with noun–verb stress contrast;
- words with difficult clusters.
Train these first.
57. Do not train pronunciation only from lists | 发音训练最终必须回到真实输入与输出
Lists isolate the problem. Real listening and speaking test whether the repair survives.
- listen to interview/lecture;
- mark missed known words;
- repair;
- retell the content;
- use target vocabulary naturally.
The lesson ends in communication, not phonetics notation.
58. A 10-minute sound-form session | 10 分钟声音词汇训练
| Time | Task |
|---|---|
| 0–2 min | Choose three active-vocabulary targets. |
| 2–4 min | Listen + mark stress. |
| 4–6 min | Say each in one collocation. |
| 6–8 min | Meaning → spoken word retrieval. |
| 8–10 min | Hear audio without spelling and identify. |
59. A 20-minute pronunciation-vocabulary session | 20 分钟完整小循环
| Time | Task |
|---|---|
| 0–5 min | Review five sound-risk words. |
| 5–9 min | Dictionary audio + stress marking. |
| 9–13 min | Word-family or noun–verb contrast. |
| 13–17 min | Phrase + sentence production. |
| 17–20 min | Audio-only recognition test. |
60. A 45-minute integrated session | 45 分钟听说词汇整合
| Time | Task |
|---|---|
| 0–10 min | Listen to a transcript-supported source without text. |
| 10–16 min | Mark known words you failed to hear. |
| 16–24 min | Check audio, stress and syllable shape. |
| 24–31 min | Build phrase-level pronunciation. |
| 31–37 min | Retell content using selected targets. |
| 37–42 min | Record and compare. |
| 42–45 min | Schedule delayed audio recognition. |
61. A seven-day sound-form challenge | 七天声音词汇挑战
| Day | Focus |
|---|---|
| 1 | primary stress in 10 active words |
| 2 | word-family stress shifts |
| 3 | noun–verb stress contrasts |
| 4 | final consonants and clusters in personal targets |
| 5 | audio-only recognition |
| 6 | phrase-level spoken production |
| 7 | mixed listening + speaking without notes |
62. A 30-day auditory-vocabulary challenge | 30 天听觉词汇挑战
- Select 100 visually known advanced words.
- Check dictionary audio for all 100.
- Mark stress for the 40 least stable.
- Build 20 word-family sound sets.
- Build 10 noun–verb stress pairs.
- Complete 12 transcript-supported listening sessions.
- Record 10 short spoken explanations.
- Track 30 “known but missed by ear” items.
- Re-test them without spelling.
The target is not accent perfection. The target is fewer known words disappearing in sound.
63. A 12-week progression | 12 周声音词汇路线
| Weeks | Focus | Evidence of progress |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | dictionary audio + primary stress | less hesitation saying active words |
| 3–4 | word-family stress | better recognition of derived forms |
| 5–6 | noun–verb stress and syllable shape | fewer homograph recognition errors |
| 7–8 | clusters/final consonants in personal targets | clearer lexical identity |
| 9–10 | audio-only recognition + phrase production | stronger listening access |
| 11–12 | spontaneous spoken transfer | advanced words survive real conversation |
64. The first weak link diagnostic | 第一个弱点诊断
| Symptom | Likely first weak link | Repair |
|---|---|---|
| I know it on paper but cannot say it. | phonological representation | dictionary audio + stress + phrase |
| I say it but people do not recognise it. | stress/sound contrast/cluster | recording-based intelligibility repair |
| I know the word but miss it in listening. | auditory lexical access | audio-only recognition |
| I miss derived forms. | word-family stress shift | family sound cards |
| I confuse noun and verb uses. | stress + grammar | noun–verb contrast sentences |
| I add extra syllables. | spelling-driven pronunciation | listen/tap/phrase practice |
| I avoid useful words in speech. | pronunciation confidence | meaning → spoken-word retrieval |
| I obsess over accent details but communication is fine. | priority control | return to intelligibility + lexical need |
65. Practice A — mark the stress contrast | 练习 A:标出重音差别
Use a learner dictionary to check after attempting.
- record — noun vs verb;
- present — noun/adjective vs verb;
- conduct — noun vs verb;
- project — noun vs verb;
- object — noun vs verb;
- permit — noun vs verb;
- contract — noun vs verb.
66. Practice B — hear the word family | 练习 B:词族声音变化
- analyse / analysis / analytical;
- photograph / photography / photographic;
- economy / economic / economical;
- origin / original / originality.
For each family, mark the stressed syllable and say one collocation per word.
67. Practice C — diagnose the listening miss | 练习 C:判断为什么“明明认识却没听出来”
- You expected first-syllable stress but heard second-syllable stress. What kind of problem?
- You expected every written vowel to be fully pronounced. What kind of problem?
- You recognised the word after reading the transcript but your internal pronunciation had an extra syllable. What should you repair?
- You recognised the singular but missed the plural because the final cluster disappeared. What should you practise?
- You recognised the spelling but not a common regional variant. Should you change your own pronunciation automatically?
68. Practice D — meaning to spoken word | 练习 D:意思→声音
- “believable but not necessarily proven” → say the word.
- “factor limiting what is possible” → say the word.
- “reduce the severity of risk” → say the word.
- “assign resources to a purpose” → say the word.
- “existing beneath the obvious surface” → say the word.
- “detailed examination of information” → say the noun and then the verb from the same family.
69. Practice E — word to phrase to sentence | 练习 E:单词→词块→句子
- plausible → plausible explanation → full sentence;
- substantial → substantial progress → full sentence;
- allocate → allocate resources → full sentence;
- mitigate → mitigate risk → full sentence;
- underlying → underlying assumption → full sentence.
70. Answers A | 练习 A 参考
Typical stress contrasts: REcord / reCORD; PREsent / preSENT; CONduct / conDUCT; PROject / proJECT; OBject / obJECT; PERmit / perMIT; CONtract / conTRACT. Check the dictionary for your target variety and the exact lexical use.
71. Answers B | 练习 B 参考
Mark stress from dictionary audio rather than relying only on spelling. Useful learning contrasts include ANalyse → aNALysis → anaLYTical; PHOtograph → phoTOGraphy → photoGRAPHic. For economy/economic/economical and origin/original/originality, listen carefully to your target accent and mark the stress you actually hear.
The point is not memorising typography. The point is hearing and producing the shift.
72. Answers C | 练习 C 解析
- Likely lexical-stress mismatch.
- Likely spelling-driven expectation plus vowel reduction.
- Repair syllable shape through dictionary audio and phrase practice.
- Practise final consonant cluster plus the grammatical ending in meaningful singular/plural contrasts.
- No. Train recognition of the variant first. Keep your own established intelligible pronunciation unless there is a reason to change it.
73. Answers D | 练习 D 参考
- plausible;
- constraint;
- mitigate;
- allocate;
- underlying;
- analysis → analyse.
After saying the word, play dictionary audio and compare stress and sound shape.
74. Answers E — model sentences | 练习 E 参考句
- “A plausible explanation is that the two groups had different prior knowledge.”
- “The learner made substantial progress after the feedback became more specific.”
- “The team allocated more resources to the final testing stage.”
- “The revised procedure may mitigate the risk of duplicate entries.”
- “The argument depends on an underlying assumption about timing.”
75. How a strong tutor teaches pronunciation inside vocabulary | 高水平导师怎样把发音教进词汇
A weak correction says, “Pronounce it like this.” A stronger lesson diagnoses the lexical problem:
- Is stress wrong?
- Is the syllable shape wrong?
- Is a consonant cluster disappearing?
- Is the learner confusing a noun and verb form?
- Does the family shift stress?
- Can the learner hear the correct form without spelling?
- Can the learner retrieve the sound from meaning?
Then the tutor repairs the smallest broken component and returns the word to a meaningful phrase.
This preserves the first-weak-link approach: do not turn every vocabulary pronunciation error into a full accent lesson.
76. The learner should become their own sound-form editor | 最终,学生要会自己给词汇补声音
When adding an active word, ask:
- Have I heard it from a reliable dictionary?
- Where is primary stress?
- Does the family move stress?
- Is there a noun–verb contrast?
- Am I adding an extra syllable?
- Can I say it in a phrase?
- Can I recognise it without seeing spelling?
- Can I retrieve it from meaning?
This makes pronunciation part of vocabulary autonomy.

80. Your assignment | 本课作业
Choose twenty advanced words you understand well in reading but do not fully trust in speaking or listening.
- Write the word and meaning.
- Predict pronunciation before audio.
- Mark your predicted stress.
- Play a reliable dictionary audio.
- Correct stress/syllable shape.
- Add one collocation.
- Say the collocation three times.
- Create one personal sentence.
- Record it.
- Two days later, identify the word from audio without spelling.
- Then retrieve the spoken word from a meaning cue.
If a word remains difficult, classify why. Do not simply repeat it more. Stress? Cluster? family shift? spelling expectation? regional variant? Your diagnosis determines the repair.
不要问:“我这个词读了多少遍?”要问:“这个词现在能不能从意思直接变成声音,也能不能从声音直接回到意思?”
81. The final rule | 最后一条规则
Do not let advanced vocabulary live only in your eyes.
不要让高级词汇只活在眼睛里。
Give the word a meaning. Give it a phrase. Give it a sound. Give it stress. Hear it without the spelling. Say it without looking. Put it into a sentence. Meet it again in someone else’s speech.
Then the word changes status. It is no longer only something you recognise in a book. It can enter a discussion, survive a presentation and return from memory when the sentence needs it.
That is vocabulary becoming spoken language.
词汇真正完整的时候,它不只有拼写和意思,也有声音。
