shop is very common in British English. store is very common in American English.

Price | 价格

  • price

Question:

What is the price?

How much is this? | 这个多少钱?

This is one of the most useful beginner shopping questions.

  • How much is this?
  • How much is that?
  • How much are these?

Simple answers:

  • Five dollars.
  • Ten euros.
  • Twenty yuan.

Cost | cost

cost can be a verb or noun.

  • How much does it cost?
  • It costs ten dollars.
  • the cost

Beginner phrase pair:

  • price = noun
  • cost = noun or verb

Money | 钱

money is usually uncountable in standard English.

  • some money
  • a lot of money

Not normally:

*a money

Cash | 现金

  • pay in cash
  • cash payment
  • Do you take cash?

Card | 卡 / 银行卡

  • pay by card
  • credit card
  • debit card
  • Can I pay by card?

Do not share card numbers or sensitive payment details in vocabulary practice.

Pay | 付款

  • pay
  • pay by card
  • pay in cash
  • pay for the food

Notice the phrase:

pay for + thing

Buy | 买

  • buy food
  • buy a shirt
  • buy a ticket
  • I want to buy this.

Sell | 卖

  • sell food
  • sell clothes
  • They sell books.

Contrast:

  • buy — customer side
  • sell — seller side

Cheap and expensive | 便宜与贵

  • cheap — 便宜的
  • expensive — 贵的

Phrases:

  • a cheap bag
  • an expensive phone

Question:

Is it expensive?

Cheaper / more expensive | 更便宜 / 更贵

  • This one is cheaper.
  • That one is more expensive.

This lightly introduces comparison. Full comparative grammar remains with deeper owners.

Discount | 折扣

  • discount
  • 10% discount
  • on sale

Understand the words, but keep percentage mathematics with Mathematics owners.

Sale | 打折 / 销售

sale can refer to selling generally or a period when prices are reduced.

  • on sale
  • a sale

Do not assume every “sale” means every item is cheap. Read the actual price.

Receipt | 收据

  • receipt
  • keep the receipt
  • Can I have the receipt?

Pronunciation watch: the p in receipt is silent.

Change | 找零 / 零钱

In shopping:

  • change — money returned after payment
  • Here is your change.

change has many other meanings. Learn the shopping meaning through context.

Coin and note/bill | 硬币与纸币

coin硬币
note纸币(英式常见)
bill纸币(美式可用);账单也可叫 bill

Regional vocabulary varies. Learn local money terms first.

Try on | 试穿

  • try on a shirt
  • try on the shoes
  • Can I try this on?

This is a useful clothing-shopping phrase. Lesson 017 supplies the clothing vocabulary.

Fit | 合身

  • It fits.
  • It does not fit.
  • These shoes fit.

Colour choice | 颜色选择

  • Do you have this in blue?
  • I want the black one.
  • Which colour?

Lesson 017 supplies the colour vocabulary.

Want and need | 想要与需要

  • I want this.
  • I need a new shirt.
  • I need two bottles of water.

These high-frequency verbs turn product vocabulary into real requests.

This one / that one | 这个 / 那个

  • This one, please.
  • That one, please.
  • I want this one.

one avoids repeating the product noun.

Which one? | 哪一个?

  • Which one?
  • The blue one.
  • The small one.

Put in order:

This turns isolated words into a process.
