Singapore’s ScamShield guidance repeatedly emphasises checking before acting, especially when urgency or impersonation is involved. The current ScamShield app can check suspicious numbers, messages and links, while the 1799 helpline provides another verification route.
The educational principle is broader than any single app: pause → verify identity or source through a trusted channel → do not disclose credentials or move money because a message created urgency.
Practice Should Build Verification Habits
- Take one AI answer and verify its most consequential factual claim against a primary or authoritative source.
- Review which accounts currently use multi-factor authentication.
- Practise recovering access to one important account safely rather than relying on memory alone.
- Compare a suspicious message with the organisation’s official contact channel before acting.
- Identify one automated workflow and state where human review remains necessary.
- Remove one unnecessary piece of sensitive information from a routine digital process.
- Teach one less digitally confident person a verification routine rather than simply completing the task for them.
Boundary: AI Assistance Does Not Remove Domain Boundaries
AI can explain concepts and organise information, but it does not confer medical, legal, financial, engineering or other regulated authority on the user. A generated answer should not be used to bypass professional requirements or current official rules.
Likewise, the ability to generate content does not remove copyright, confidentiality, privacy, employment, academic-integrity or contractual obligations.
Repair the Digital Break at the Right Layer
If access is the problem, repair authentication or device skill. If source quality is weak, improve verification. If AI output is unreliable, change the task, prompt, source or review method. If an older adult can use the service only through another person, improve the exact access step rather than assuming the entire technology is beyond them.
