A successful lesson is not the final receipt. Immediate performance tells us what happened while the Tutorial was still close. The stronger question is what comes back later.
The receipt is the later evidence that tells us what the learner can still retrieve, transfer, explain, execute or recover after the original support has faded.

Why the Launch Is Not the Receipt
A learner may perform beautifully at the end of an explanation because the examples are fresh, the representation is visible and the Tutor has recently framed the route.
That is useful evidence. It is not the same as durable learning.
The receipt asks what remains when some of that recency, cueing and familiarity has disappeared.
What Can Count as a Receipt?
- a delayed question several days later;
- a changed representation;
- an unfamiliar problem with the same structure;
- an explanation without the earlier notes visible;
- a school assignment completed independently;
- a later test item;
- an error-recovery task;
- real-world use of the mathematical relationship;
- the learner spontaneously choosing the right tool or representation later.
The Receipt Must Match the Claim
If the claim is “the learner can retrieve the quadratic formula after delay”, the receipt should contain delayed retrieval. If the claim is “the learner can select a route in unseen problems”, a familiar topical worksheet is a weak receipt.
Evidence is useful when it tests the actual claim rather than a nearby easier one.
Different claims require different receipts.
A Mathematics Example
A P5 learner appears secure in percentage after a Tutorial. Three days later, the learner receives a differently worded problem with no bar model and no topic label.
If the learner identifies the reference quantity, chooses a valid representation and solves independently, the receipt strengthens the original claim. If the learner cannot enter the problem, the receipt narrows what was actually learned.
Immediate, Delayed and Transfer Receipts
- Immediate receipt: can the learner perform after teaching with support reduced?
- Delayed receipt: does the capability return after time?
- Transfer receipt: does the relationship survive a changed surface, representation or context?
These are not rigid stages for every lesson. They are different evidence lenses that strengthen or narrow the teaching claim.
A Weak Receipt Is Still Useful
If the learner fails after delay, that does not erase the immediate progress. It tells us that the capability may be present but not yet sufficiently retrievable or durable.
The next intervention should therefore match the returned evidence: more spaced retrieval, representation switching, route-selection practice or another specific repair.
Receipt Without Surveillance
Not every return needs to become a formal data system. A Tutor can learn a great deal from ordinary marked work, a short follow-up problem, a learner explanation or a parent reporting that homework became more independent.
The educational purpose is to test the learning claim, not to collect information for its own sake.

- No return: immediate performance becomes the final claim.
- Wrong return: evidence tests an easier capability than the one claimed.
- Score-only return: the mark is kept but the route and conditions are ignored.
- Failure overreaction: one weak receipt becomes proof that nothing was learned.
- Success inflation: one delayed success becomes permanent mastery.

“Solved one changed problem independently after three days” is a strong observation. “Will never need help with percentage again” is a much larger claim the evidence does not justify.
The Receipt Changes the Next Tutorial
A strong return may justify further support reduction or a more complex mission. A weak return may send one capability back through recycle. An unexpected return may change the diagnosis entirely.
This is how Tutorial becomes a loop rather than a sequence that forgets what happened after the learner left.

How long should we wait for a delayed receipt?
There is no universal interval. The delay should be long enough to reduce immediate cueing and appropriate to the learner, task and educational purpose.
Is a school test the best receipt?
It can be valuable, especially for realistic transfer and examination conditions, but shorter follow-up tasks can isolate specific capabilities more clearly.
What if the receipt is mixed?
Describe it narrowly. A learner may retain the concept but lose speed, or preserve execution but fail route selection. Mixed receipts are often more informative than a single global label.
The Long Arc
Mature learners create their own receipts. They return to knowledge after delay, test whether a method survives a new problem, compare predictions with outcomes and update their confidence when reality disagrees.
Learning becomes trustworthy when what we claim is allowed to meet the world again after the lesson is over.
