“Today we are doing fractions.”
That tells us the topic. It does not yet tell us the mission.
A Tutorial becomes more precise when it identifies the learner-state change that would make the event worth having. The mission might be to recognise a relationship, retrieve a fact without prompting, select a representation, distinguish two similar concepts, recover from a particular error, explain why a method works, or carry a capability into an unfamiliar question.
Mission Definition asks: if this Tutorial works, what will the learner be able to do differently after it?
One-Sentence Answer
A Tutorial mission is a bounded, evidence-bearing change in learner capability—not merely a topic to cover or an activity to complete.
Why Missions Matter at Cape Canaveral
A launch programme cannot define success as “do some rocket work”. The mission has an objective, a configuration, a destination or operating purpose, constraints, commit criteria and an expected transition of responsibility.
The educational translation is useful because lessons often become activity-led. A worksheet exists, therefore the learner completes it. A chapter appears next in the book, therefore it becomes the lesson. A school test is approaching, therefore every session becomes “revision”.
Those activities may be appropriate. But the Tutorial needs a stronger reason for existence.
Topic, Activity and Mission Are Different

A strong Tutorial can still use the 15 questions. The difference is that the questions now serve a defined educational job.
Mission Definition Begins with the Entry State
The same topic can require different missions for different learners.
Consider two Secondary 1 students working on algebra.
Student A understands equality but makes frequent sign errors during long manipulation. Student B performs memorised transposition steps but cannot explain why equivalent transformations preserve an equation.
Both appear to need “algebra”. Their missions should not be identical.
- Student A: stabilise execution and self-checking across longer algebraic chains.
- Student B: rebuild equation solving around equivalence, then test whether the relationship survives when the surface changes.
Mission follows evidence rather than chapter title.
A Mission Needs a Verb That Exposes Capability
Useful Tutorial missions often use verbs such as:
- recognise;
- distinguish;
- represent;
- retrieve;
- explain;
- select;
- execute;
- verify;
- recover;
- transfer;
- compare;
- justify.
These verbs are useful because they suggest evidence.
If the mission is “understand fractions”, evidence is vague. If the mission is “compare two fractions using a representation the learner chooses and explain why the larger fraction is larger”, the Tutorial can observe something concrete without pretending it has measured every part of fraction understanding.
Mission Scope Must Be Small Enough to Finish Honestly
A Tutorial is bounded. The mission should respect that.
“Master algebra” is too large for one ordinary session. “Recover from sign errors in linear-equation manipulation and verify the result independently” may be realistic.
Small missions are not low ambition. They create a sequence of truthful handovers instead of one inflated claim.
Education becomes stronger when the size of the claim matches the size of the evidence.
Mission Can Be Repair, Expansion, Integration or Commissioning
Not every Tutorial is trying to install something new.
- Repair: restore a prerequisite or correct a recurring misconception.
- Expansion: add a new concept, representation or procedure.
- Integration: connect capabilities that already exist separately.
- Transfer: make the capability survive a changed surface.
- Commissioning: test whether the system works independently under realistic load.
- Maintenance: retrieve and refresh capability before it decays.
Recognising the mission type helps prevent a Tutorial from applying the same teaching pattern to every problem.
The Mission Must Include the Independence Boundary
A mission is incomplete if success is defined only while the Tutor remains fully involved.
Suppose the goal is to help a student solve simultaneous equations. If every successful attempt follows an immediately demonstrated template, we have evidence of supported performance. The mission should eventually specify what support will reduce:
- no worked example beside the question;
- no indication of which method to use;
- different coefficients;
- a word problem requiring the equations to be formed;
- a delayed attempt.
The mission therefore includes a handover condition.
Mission Is Not the Same as an Examination Target
“Get A1” may be a legitimate long-term goal. It is not a useful Tutorial mission by itself.
An examination result is produced by many interacting capabilities: knowledge, retrieval, interpretation, route selection, execution, timing, recovery, checking and emotional regulation under pressure. The Tutorial should locate the smallest useful job inside that larger goal.
That is why a weak mark does not automatically imply “do more papers”. The mission may first be to stabilise algebra, rebuild a concept, improve representation or practise recovery after a failed route.
Mission Definition Across the Life Course
At Year 0, the mission may be almost entirely adult-owned: create a safe repeated relationship between action and quantity and notice what the child begins to anticipate. In Primary school, the learner can increasingly understand the mission in ordinary language: “Today we are learning to decide when division is the useful relationship.”
By Secondary school, the learner should increasingly participate in mission definition: “I know the formula, but I cannot recognise when to use it.” At university or work, the person may arrive with the mission already framed: “I need to understand enough statistics to decide whether this reported difference is meaningful.”
The mature learner does not wait for an institution to assign every mission.
Parent Use: Ask What the Session Is Trying to Change
A useful parent question is not only:
“What did you cover today?”
Try also:
- What could you do at the end that was harder at the beginning?
- What support did you need less of?
- What mistake became clearer?
- What can you now recognise on your own?
- What still needs another Tutorial?
Those questions make progress more visible without reducing the child to a score.
The Boundary of Mission Definition
A mission is a teaching hypothesis, not a guarantee. The learner may reveal a more important upstream problem after the Tutorial begins. Good mission design therefore includes permission to HOLD, RECYCLE or reframe when new evidence appears.
The plan serves the learner. The learner does not exist to make the plan look correct.
The RFE of Mission Definition
Define a learning change small enough to observe honestly, important enough to justify the Tutorial, and independent enough that the learner can eventually carry it beyond the room.

When the Mission Is Wrong
A weak Tutorial mission can produce a great deal of work and very little useful change. It may be too broad, aimed at the visible symptom rather than the earlier weak link, written around the worksheet instead of the learner, or defined so vaguely that no honest evidence could ever show whether it succeeded.
Typical warning signs are missions such as “finish revision”, “improve Mathematics”, “do more algebra” or “prepare for exams” when the actual difficulty has not been narrowed. The learner then experiences activity without a clear educational handover.
Repair the Mission by Narrowing the Claim
Start with the smallest useful difference between entry and exit. Ask what the learner cannot yet do reliably, what evidence would distinguish competing explanations, and which capability would make the next school or life task easier to carry independently.
- Replace “revise fractions” with “choose a useful representation for comparing unlike fractions without being told which one to use”.
- Replace “fix algebra” with “preserve equality while rearranging a linear equation and identify the first invalid step in an incorrect solution”.
- Replace “improve exam skills” with “select a route independently on mixed questions and recover after one failed first attempt”.
The narrower mission can later be recombined into a larger goal. Precision does not reduce ambition; it makes progress testable.
A Mission Should Survive a Change of Activity
If changing the worksheet destroys the mission, the mission was probably an activity description. A genuine capability target can usually be practised through several tasks and represented in more than one way. That matters because the learner eventually needs the capability outside the exact material used to teach it.
The mission belongs to the learner’s capability. The worksheet is only one vehicle.
Parent Decision Support: Five Useful Questions
- What exactly is the Tutorial trying to change today?
- Why is that change more useful than simply completing the next chapter?
- What would count as evidence that the change happened?
- What support should eventually be reduced?
- If the mission turns out to be wrong, is the Tutorial allowed to change course?
Frequently Asked Questions
Can one Tutorial have more than one mission?
Yes, but the missions should remain bounded and related. A Tutorial may repair one prerequisite and then use it in a new problem. Too many unrelated missions can make the evidence difficult to interpret.
What if the learner already knows the planned material?
Then the mission should move. Increase variation, ask for explanation, test delayed retrieval, combine topics or hand more route selection to the learner rather than repeating work that no longer changes capability.
What if a more basic weakness appears halfway through?
That is useful evidence. A strong Tutorial can HOLD the original mission, repair the earlier dependency and return later. Sticking rigidly to the first plan can waste the very evidence the Tutorial produced.
The Long Arc: Learners Eventually Define Their Own Missions
Young learners depend on adults to choose most educational missions. Through Primary and Secondary school, they should increasingly learn to describe the active difficulty themselves: “I can do the method but I cannot recognise when it applies,” or “I understand this with a diagram but not yet from the equation.”
By adulthood, the mature form is self-directed but not isolated: recognise a real knowledge gap, define the learning mission, call appropriate expertise, test what changed and decide whether another Tutorial is still needed.
The final mission skill is knowing what you need to become able to do before you decide how to learn it.
