If that works, performance testing may mix the quadratic with algebraic fractions, graph interpretation or timed conditions. A new failure does not erase the earlier success; it locates the condition under which performance becomes unstable.
A capability can be real and still not yet be commissioned for every condition.
Do Not Confuse Difficulty With Validity
A harder question is not automatically a better test. It is useful only if the added difficulty corresponds to the capability we want to inspect.
If the target is algebraic route selection, obscure vocabulary may add irrelevant language load. If the target is examination execution, realistic language density may be exactly the condition that should be restored later.
Common Testing Errors
- Testing load before function: failure becomes too ambiguous to repair economically.
- Testing only familiar form: the learner never has to select or transfer.
- Testing once: one good or bad performance becomes a global conclusion.
- Ignoring support: success with prompts is counted as equivalent to independent operation.
- Adding every condition at once: the Tutor cannot tell which condition caused the breakdown.
A Better Test Ladder

Not every capability needs every rung immediately. The ladder simply makes the evidence more interpretable.
Repair the First Failing Condition
If the capability fails as soon as representation changes, repair representation transfer. If it fails only under time pressure, preserve the concept and work on fluency, route efficiency or checking. If it fails only after delay, strengthen retrieval and spacing.
This avoids reteaching a concept that is already present but not yet robust under the new condition.

Learning becomes dependable when the learner knows not only that a capability works, but the conditions under which it still works and when support is justified.
