Arrival State | What Has Actually Arrived at the Tutorial?

Quick Read

A planned Tutorial begins on paper. A real Tutorial begins when the learner arrives.

The learner may arrive confident but brittle, capable but tired, familiar with the topic but dependent on prompts, or apparently weak because one earlier prerequisite has stopped carrying the load. The same lesson plan can therefore be useful for one student and wasteful for another.

Arrival State asks a simple question: what is actually true about this learner, this task and these conditions now?

One-Sentence Answer

Arrival State is the learner’s present, evidence-based starting position before the Tutorial decides whether to teach forward, repair backward, reconfigure support or simply let the learner try.

The Historical Anchor

In a launch environment, hardware does not become “ready” because a schedule says it should be ready. What arrives must be inspected in its actual condition before further integration and launch preparation proceed.

The educational translation is deliberately limited. A learner is not hardware. The useful systems lesson is simply that plans should meet reality before the next irreversible step is taken.

Topic Is Not Arrival State

“Fractions”, “algebra” or “comprehension” names a curriculum area. It does not tell us what the learner can currently do inside that area.

  • A learner may understand the concept but retrieve it slowly.
  • A learner may remember the method but not recognise when it applies.
  • A learner may solve a familiar form but fail when the representation changes.
  • A learner may have the Mathematics but lose accuracy under examination load.
  • A learner may look weak because the task language is obscuring an otherwise secure relationship.

The Four Parts of an Arrival State

  1. Capability: what can the learner presently do?
  2. Support: what help is still attached?
  3. Conditions: under what time, language, attention or representation demands is the learner operating?
  4. Evidence quality: what is observed, what is inferred and what remains unknown?

A Mathematics Example

A Secondary 2 learner says, “I don’t understand simultaneous equations.” The arrival state should not immediately become “weak at simultaneous equations”.

A short first attempt may show that the learner can eliminate correctly when equations are already formed, but cannot translate a word problem into two equations. The active difficulty is therefore representation and modelling, not the elimination procedure itself.

The smaller the arrival claim, the easier it becomes to choose the right next move.

What Arrival State Is Not

  • It is not a permanent label.
  • It is not a personality judgement.
  • It is not a prediction of the learner’s ceiling.
  • It is not the same as the latest test score.
  • It is not a reason to delay teaching indefinitely while more data is collected.

Common Misreads

  • Fast = secure. Speed can come from familiarity rather than transfer.
  • Slow = weak. Careful processing can be accurate and conceptually strong.
  • One error = misconception. A single slip may be execution noise.
  • One success = mastery. Supported or immediate performance may not survive delay.
  • Silence = no understanding. Some learners reveal more through written work than verbal speed.

The Minimum Useful Arrival Check

A good Tutor does not need a battery of tests before every lesson. Often one discriminating question is enough.

  • Ask the learner to start without naming the method.
  • Change one representation.
  • Remove one support.
  • Ask for an explanation rather than another answer.
  • Test the prerequisite that the current step depends on.

The goal is not exhaustive measurement. It is enough evidence to avoid the wrong next move.

When the Planned Lesson Should Change

If the arrival state contradicts the lesson plan, the plan should move.

A missing prerequisite may justify repair. A learner who already owns the target may need transfer or extension. A student who is tired after a long school day may need a lower-load entry before harder commissioning work. A learner who can already start independently may need the Tutor to stay quiet longer.

Curie Check: What Do We Actually Know?

The Marie Curie lens keeps Arrival State disciplined. We distinguish observed evidence from interpretation. “The learner used a diagram after a prompt” is an observation. “The learner cannot think visually” is a much larger claim and may not be justified.

This protects both accuracy and dignity. The learner is not reduced to the first story the adult tells about them.

Parent Decision Guide

  • Can the Tutor explain what my child can already do, not only what is wrong?
  • Is the current difficulty described narrowly enough to be teachable?
  • Does the Tutor distinguish concept, retrieval, representation and exam execution?
  • Can the lesson change when the evidence changes?
  • Is the child being given opportunities to show what they can do without immediate prompting?

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Arrival State mean testing every lesson?

No. It can be as simple as inspecting the first independent attempt and asking one useful question.

What if the learner has a bad day?

Conditions belong to the arrival state. One tired performance should not automatically overwrite stronger evidence gathered elsewhere.

Can Arrival State change inside one Tutorial?

Yes. Teaching itself produces new evidence. A good Tutorial keeps updating its picture as the learner acts.

The Long Arc

Young learners depend on adults to interpret their starting state. Through Primary and Secondary school, learners should increasingly learn to describe it themselves: what they know, where the route breaks, what support they used and what remains uncertain.

In adulthood, this becomes a general learning skill: locate your real starting point before committing time, money or effort to the wrong solution.

A strong learning journey begins by respecting the state that actually arrived, not the state the plan expected.
