Quick answer. Sengkang has 12 mainstream primary schools in the 2026 MOE directory. There is no one school that is best for every child. Begin with your child’s actual P1 registration year, the phase your family qualifies for, your officially measured home–school distance and whether your child can manage the journey. Then compare learning environment, support and daily care arrangements. If your child is entering P1 in January 2027, the 2026 registration exercise has already taken place. The 2027 P1 registration exercise is for entry in 2028 and has important new Phase 2C rules.
What you can do today: (1) open MOE’s P1 registration portal and check the correct cohort; (2) use MOE SchoolFinder and the government’s distance checker, not a walking-distance guess; (3) visit a practical shortlist; and (4) compare previous ballot outcomes with caution. This article was fact-checked on 6 November 2026 and explains what is confirmed versus what families must recheck.
This is a school-choice decision guide, not a league table, a guarantee of admission or a replacement for the official registration portal. For the broader Sengkang school directory see Primary Schools in Sengkang; for searching and comparing programmes see our SchoolFinder guide.
Which primary schools are actually in Sengkang?
These 12 schools are named in the 2026 Ministry of Education school dataset. The road names below help orient your shortlist, but the school’s exact admissions address and the residential address used for registration must be checked with MOE. A school can be near a neighbourhood without being inside your home’s 1 km priority band.
| Primary school | Location / address | First question for parents |
|---|---|---|
| Anchor Green Primary School | 31 Anchorvale Drive | Can the child reach the gate comfortably at morning arrival time? |
| Compassvale Primary School | 21 Compassvale Street | Is the daily Sengkang-centre or Compassvale route convenient? |
| Fern Green Primary School | 70 Fernvale Link | What route works from the family’s actual Fernvale block? |
| Fernvale Primary School | 1 Fernvale Lane | How will drop-off and student care work on working days? |
| Nan Chiau Primary School | 50 Anchorvale Link | What is the family’s eligible registration phase and realistic vacancy outlook? |
| North Spring Primary School | 1 Rivervale Street | Can a young child handle the Rivervale journey in wet weather? |
| North Vista Primary School | 20 Compassvale Link | Would the Buangkok / Compassvale route be stable throughout the year? |
| Palm View Primary School | 150 Compassvale Bow | Do its programmes and school environment suit your child? |
| Rivervale Primary School | 80 Rivervale Drive | Where can an adult meet the child after school? |
| Seng Kang Primary School | 21 Compassvale Walk | Are the transport and after-school arrangements sustainable? |
| Sengkang Green Primary School | 15 Fernvale Road | How do admissions and any co-located kindergarten link work? |
| Springdale Primary School | 71 Anchorvale Link | How do family routines fit the school day? |
Important name distinction: Seng Kang Primary School and Sengkang Green Primary School are two different schools. Search using the full official name so you do not confuse their vacancies, addresses or programmes. MOE’s directory data can be downloaded from data.gov.sg.
2027 registration is not the same as Primary 1 in 2027
Singapore normally registers children for P1 in the calendar year before they enter primary school. The 2026 exercise admitted children for January 2027. The 2027 exercise is for January 2028. Families planning ahead must use the next exercise’s actual published dates and age checker, not copy a previous year’s dates from an online article.
As of 6 November 2026, the 2027 registration calendar should not be presented as final unless MOE has published it. Start from MOE’s official P1 portal and follow its registration-year checker. If your child was eligible in the already-completed 2026 exercise but is not registered, seek advice directly from MOE rather than assuming the next routine exercise is an appropriate substitute.
The September 2026 change: more Phase 2C places from the 2027 exercise
On 10 September 2026, MOE announced changes to the P1 registration framework effective from the 2027 registration exercise for 2028 entry. At most schools, the minimum number of places set aside for the open Phase 2C rises from 40 to 60. Schools with an intake below 180 retain the 40-place minimum. This is a reserved minimum, not a guarantee that a school will offer exactly 60 places or that a particular applicant will secure one. Prior registration phases and actual demand still matter.
A second change splits Phase 2C into two distance tracks at 12 named schools elsewhere in Singapore, with half of places for families within 2 km and half beyond 2 km, and no further distance priority within each track. None of the 12 Sengkang primary schools listed above is on the announced two-track list. Do not mistakenly apply the special two-track rule to Nan Chiau Primary, Compassvale Primary or another Sengkang school. At Sengkang schools, refer to the prevailing standard priority and balloting arrangements, subject to future MOE changes.
These are published national rule changes, not a prediction about whether any Sengkang school will ballot. See MOE’s 10 September 2026 press release and the P1 portal. For a dated independent account, the CNA report of 10 September 2026 describes the change; MOE remains authoritative.
What do Phases 1, 2A, 2B and 2C mean?
Phase 1 generally covers children whose sibling is already studying in the school. Phase 2A covers specified school ties, such as qualifying former-student, staff and school-advisory connections, including eligible children from a co-located MOE Kindergarten. Phase 2B covers qualifying volunteer, religious or community ties under MOE’s conditions. Phase 2C is open to children not yet registered for a primary-school place. There is also Phase 2C Supplementary. International students follow different procedures; do not use a citizen/PR schedule as their own.
A connection must actually satisfy the rule. Signing up as a volunteer late does not create a completed volunteer entitlement. Attending a kindergarten with a similar name does not automatically secure a place at the adjacent primary school. A sibling’s past attendance is not necessarily the same as a sibling currently enrolled. Re-read the exact eligibility clauses for your family’s circumstances.
Is the nearest primary school the best choice?
For many P1 children, a predictable local journey has substantial daily value. Ten minutes of extra early-morning travel, a difficult road crossing or a long wait for a transfer can change sleep, breakfast, energy and the child’s willingness to attend. But a closer school is not automatically better if the child’s support needs, culture and daily care arrangements are a poor fit.
Try a working-week route test: leave at the time the child would leave, travel with a school bag, identify sheltered sections and road crossings, check where a younger sibling or caregiver would wait, and repeat when possible during a rainy day. Do not use a weekend noon journey as proof of a weekday morning commute. For registered home–school distance, trust the official MOE/SLA process, not an estimate of the walking route.
In Anchorvale, Fernvale, Rivervale and Compassvale, school gates, covered walkways, LRT stations and home addresses can create markedly different routines even within one planning area. Ask yourself: will the child be walking independently later, taking a school bus, or accompanied every day? Who collects them after an after-school programme? What happens when a caregiver is unwell?
A four-part school-fit test, not a ranking
- Admission reality. Confirm cohort, eligible phase, current vacancies and distance category. Compare historical ballots by phase and citizen/PR category, without assuming last year’s results predict the next exercise.
- Child fit. Observe classroom approach, kindness and discipline, languages, enrichment, learning-support arrangements and whether your child is likely to participate. Ask the school how it helps children settle in rather than relying on reputation alone.
- Family logistics. Test journey, dismissal arrangements, childcare or student care, family schedules and the cost of transport. A route must work for years, not for an ideal day.
- Long-term development. Ask about reading habits, Mathematics foundations, Science curiosity, arts, sports, CCAs and support when the child’s interests change. A Primary 1 school should be a good place to grow, not only to prepare for the PSLE.
How to interpret historical balloting without misleading yourself
A historical ballot tells you that, in one phase in one year, eligible applications exceeded available places in some category. It does not tell you a school’s quality, the probability for your future application, or the effect of a rule change. The same school can be oversubscribed one year and less so another. The 2027 exercise will also operate with an updated Phase 2C minimum, so a raw 2025 Phase 2C ratio is not a forecast for 2028 entry.
When looking up Nan Chiau Primary or any other popular option, write down which phase the figure concerns, which citizenship and distance category it describes, how many actual vacancies remained and which year it covers. If one data source merges all categories into a single percentage, it may be unsuitable for your decision. Use MOE’s vacancies and balloting history for the facts; secondary calculators are conveniences.
How to compare Primary 1 school support
Parents often ask if a school is academically strong. That is a fair concern, but it is not specific enough to help a six-year-old. Ask concrete questions: How does the school assess early reading and numeracy? What happens when a child struggles to follow instructions? How are teachers and parents informed of repeated difficulties? What support is available for language and learning needs? How can a child who is ahead be challenged without excessive homework? These are questions you can bring to a visit or parent meeting.
Do not assume extra tuition is a requirement for admission or success. A child developing well, enjoying school and receiving appropriate classroom support may need no tuition. If a later gap emerges, diagnose it before buying more worksheets. This approach is consistent with eduKate’s learning-system guide, which focuses on finding the first weak link and building independence.
Which schools should families in different parts of Sengkang check first?
Fernvale family: begin with Fern Green, Fernvale and Sengkang Green as local possibilities, then use the MOE distance tool to see which schools are genuinely within your bands. A school just beyond the Fernvale boundary could also be realistic. Consider LRT access and student-care pick-up rather than only an estate label.
Anchorvale family: map Anchor Green, Nan Chiau and Springdale, but do not infer admission priority from the similar road names. Try an actual morning route for the shortlisted schools and look beyond reputation to programme fit.
Compassvale or Buangkok family: check Compassvale, North Vista, Palm View and Seng Kang Primary as starting points. Whether these are close enough for your child depends on the actual block and crossing route, not the planning-area name.
Rivervale family: look at Rivervale and North Spring, and compare any other accessible school based on the actual home address. A bus or LRT journey can still be a good decision if child care and arrival time are dependable.
These are search starting points, not assignments, eligibility statements or an exhaustive match from every HDB block.
What if your preferred school does not offer a place?
Prepare a credible alternative before the registration phase begins. If an application is unsuccessful, follow MOE’s published next-phase instructions rather than assuming you are automatically transferred to another named school. Avoid explaining a child’s result as personal failure: admission is a regulated process affected by eligibility, vacancies and demand. Never make a high-cost home move based solely on a purported guarantee from a private property listing.
What to ask at a Sengkang primary-school open house
- How do new Primary 1 children settle into their first weeks?
- Where is the designated drop-off and collection point, and what if it rains?
- How do parents communicate when their child needs extra support?
- What are the school’s distinctive programmes in plain, everyday terms?
- How are CCA choices introduced as children grow older?
- Are school-based student-care places available, and who manages the waiting list?
- How does the school develop literacy, numeracy and friendship skills?
- Where can we find the most current booklist, uniform and transition information?
Open houses are for observation, not a guarantee of admissions. Our companion school-open-house checklist includes questions you can use on the day.
Frequently asked questions
Which is the best primary school in Sengkang?
There is no objective single winner for every child. Make a shortlist around eligibility, daily travel, child fit, school culture and support. Select a school that you could reasonably sustain for six years.
How many primary schools are in Sengkang?
The 2026 school directory identifies 12 mainstream primary schools in the Sengkang planning area. Always use MOE SchoolFinder for an updated directory and to check nearby schools just outside the boundary.
Does living within 1 km guarantee a place?
No. In a phase where demand exceeds vacancies, the official eligibility, citizenship and distance rules determine priority and whether a ballot is necessary. Being close can improve priority under ordinary rules but cannot guarantee admission.
Do the new two-track Phase 2C rules cover Sengkang schools?
Not among the 12 named schools in MOE’s September 2026 announcement. The separate national change increasing the minimum Phase 2C reservation at most schools is still relevant to Sengkang; recheck each school’s intake and the final official framework.
Will MOE Kindergarten admission guarantee its co-located primary school?
No automatic guarantee should be assumed. Certain co-located MK children qualify for Phase 2A under MOE’s rules, but admission still follows the applicable phase process. Confirm the precise eligibility and school relationship.
Can my child apply for more than one primary school at the same phase?
Follow MOE’s application rules for each phase; do not submit speculative simultaneous applications in the belief that they will all remain active. The portal governs what is accepted and how amended applications work.
What if my child needs extra learning support?
Ask candidate schools what support is available and speak with educators or relevant professionals about the child’s assessed needs. The best fit is not necessarily the school with the highest demand or shortest journey.
A practical 15-minute decision worksheet
Write down three genuine schools, your child’s cohort, your earliest qualifying registration phase, the verified distance band and how you would reach each gate at arrival and dismissal times. Next to each school, record one programme that genuinely suits your child, one question about support, and one realistic alternative if the place is unavailable. Cross out any school for which your household cannot sustain the daily journey or whose admissions eligibility you have misunderstood. This is a better decision than memorising an unverified ranking.
