For a family exploring Rivervale, the useful distinction is between a housing sales milestone and the birth of an entire neighbourhood. They are not the same event, even when both belong in a local history.

The secondary Housing Map index places Rivervale Green alongside Compassvale Arcadia in the April 2001 launch entries. It lists 776 flats for the former and 961 for the latter.
Those entries establish the chronology being used here. They should not be stretched into proof that every block was occupied simultaneously or that all households shared one moving date.
The index also contains an estimated-completion column. An estimate belongs to planning history; it should not silently become an independently verified actual completion date.
For a school project, write “listed launch: April 2001” rather than “built in April 2001”. A small change in the label prevents a much larger misunderstanding.
A neighbourhood can have roads, earlier homes, residents and familiar place names before a particular housing scheme appears in its record. A new sales arrangement does not reset everything around it to year zero.
That is why “an early BTO development in Sengkang” is more precise than “the beginning of all Sengkang housing”. The first expression identifies the subject; the second introduces a much broader claim.
Try the same distinction with a family story. Moving into a home is an important beginning for that household, but the street already has its own past.
This way of thinking helps children place personal memories inside a wider timeline without making one person’s milestone stand for everyone else.
Using the index figures for Rivervale Green and Compassvale Arcadia gives 776 + 961 = 1,737 flats across those two entries. The difference is 961 − 776 = 185 flats.
Rivervale Green’s share of that two-project total is 776 ÷ 1,737 × 100 ≈ 44.7%. The denominator must remain visible: this is a comparison of two named entries, not every home in Sengkang.
A misleading caption would say “44.7% of Sengkang lived in Rivervale Green”. The figures count flats, not residents, and the comparison excludes other housing.
Draw two bars from a zero baseline and label them with the project names and flat counts. Then add a caption identifying the shared launch month and the secondary source. Correct labels complete the mathematics.
Before visiting, confirm the development name on a current map. Similar Rivervale names can refer to different places, so do not rely on the first search result or an unrelated property photograph.
From a permitted public or common area, note one present feature and the date you saw it. Do not enter homes, photograph private activity or assume a shared space is a visitor attraction.
Next, write one research question that your observation cannot answer: when did a particular block receive its first residents, for example? Identify the additional record or consenting first-hand account you would need.
Does an early BTO launch date tell us today’s amenities or population? No. It gives us a useful historical marker. The rest of the neighbourhood story remains something to explore with curiosity and care.
