Did you know? Knowing a science fact and using it to explain a result are different achievements. To study PSLE Foundation Science when explanations are difficult, identify the observation, choose the relevant concept and explain the connection before writing a concise answer.
If you repeat the result without explaining it, add the scientific relationship that accounts for it. If the concept is wrong, revisit a taught example. If data questions seem unfamiliar, describe the supported pattern before proposing an explanation.
The revised Foundation Science format applies from 2026 and assesses the 2023 primary science syllabus. Its single written paper has multiple-choice questions in Booklet A and short-response and structured questions in Booklet B. Its objectives include application, inquiry and explanations with reasoning; recall alone is insufficient preparation.

Contents: eight practical study steps
- Separate knowledge from explanation difficulty
- Carry observation habits through primary learning
- State what is observed before giving a cause
- Connect the concept to the evidence
- Read data through its labels and conditions
- Make investigation reasoning specific
- Prepare for the different booklet tasks
- Measure independence and carry it forward
Use a marked task and explain the relevant idea orally. Compare that explanation with the written response. Determine whether the concept is unclear, evidence was overlooked or a necessary connection was left unstated.
Show uncertainty to the teacher with the attempted answer. More fact cards may help missing knowledge but may not repair an unsupported explanation. Choose a short task addressing the visible obstacle before adding another full practice paper.
Primary 1–2 children can develop observation and simple comparisons through suitable activities; this does not imply a separate Science examination at those levels. Primary 3–4 Science can build careful observation and explanations within taught topics.
In Primary 5–6 Foundation Science, connect those habits to the actual syllabus and question. Ask what changed, what information supports the answer and what scientific idea explains it. An everyday event supplies a starting point, but its explanation still needs to be learned accurately.
Identify what the question, diagram or results show. Describe the relevant difference or change without introducing an unsupported cause. Then ask which taught concept accounts for the observation. Keeping the steps distinct makes a mistaken connection easier to locate.
For a classroom learning example, compare two stated results and identify the condition that differs. The explanation must concern the given situation. Do not add an assumption merely because it appeared in an earlier question on a similar topic.
Choose the applicable idea and explain how it produces or accounts for the result. Use relevant scientific terms to make that relationship precise. Stating a concept can still leave an answer incomplete if the connection to the observation is missing.
After feedback, identify the missing link and repair a short response. Then try a fresh task requiring the same reasoning. A memorised paragraph can contain correct science while failing to explain the particular result the question asks about.
Check the quantities, units and conditions in the information provided. Identify the comparison or trend supported by the values. For a prediction, use the relevant information and concept rather than guessing from a familiar-looking graph.
Distinguish an observed pattern from its proposed explanation. If the evidence does not establish a cause, avoid presenting one as certain. Ask the teacher about a doubtful inference and practise identifying the evidence needed for the task. For a learning example, suppose two plants grow differently while several conditions differ. The observed difference alone does not isolate one cause. Identify what the information supports and ask what would need to be controlled before attributing the result to a single condition.
For a taught investigation, identify its question, what is changed and what is measured. Explain how the method helps produce useful evidence. Follow teacher-supervised learning and course guidance rather than inventing a procedure to memorise.
When evaluating a method, name the limitation and explain its effect. A general phrase such as make it fair does not specify the required action. Use a fresh example to check whether the repaired reasoning transfers beyond the correction.
In multiple-choice practice, justify the selected answer using the information and concept. Review why a distractor is unsuitable after the attempt. In short-response or structured practice, read the demand and supply the required information or explanation.
Use current material suited to the Foundation format. A short response may require a particular entry or match rather than a paragraph. Practise fulfilling the task accurately; extra writing does not automatically supply relevant reasoning.
Compare similar attempts for more accurate concept selection, clearer links to evidence and less prompting. Keep examples of repaired reasoning to discuss with the teacher. The next revision task should follow what the student can actually demonstrate.
These habits can support secondary Science, while the confirmed G1, G2 or G3 course needs its own preparation. Foundation Science does not determine every secondary subject level. Parents can ask the student to demonstrate one improved explanation and identify the next uncertainty.
