Did you know? Improving Chinese from primary school to SEC starts with using language to communicate a new meaning. Read or listen to a manageable text, explain its point, then produce a fresh spoken or written response. Keep model essays as examples to investigate rather than answers to reproduce.
If you recognise words but cannot use them, practise them in a new sentence with a clear purpose. If comprehension answers miss the reason, connect the relevant passage details. If writing relies on memorised paragraphs, plan around the new audience, situation and task before choosing language.
SEAB’s 2027 SEC Chinese routes are G1 K120, G2 K220 and G3 K320. Their assessment requirements differ; G1 writing includes a computer-based response to an online post, while G3 includes email writing and composition. For PSLE, check the format for your confirmed Standard, Foundation or Higher Chinese route and examination year.

Choose a short text at your current level. Explain it aloud, read it independently and write a brief response. Notice where the difficulty appears: recognising print, understanding meaning, selecting an idea or expressing it. Keep the attempt so teacher feedback can address the actual obstacle.
A child who understands spoken Chinese but struggles with printed words needs a different starting task from one who reads accurately but writes irrelevant content. More essay memorisation can conceal either problem. Choose a small exercise that makes the weak connection visible.
Use suitable stories, classroom texts and familiar daily situations. Listen carefully, discuss a simple meaning and connect orally familiar words to their written forms. Practise a manageable amount of reading and writing with teacher guidance rather than turning every interaction into a test.
Invite the child to say something new about the material, even if the response is short. If a written form is confused, clarify that specific contrast and revisit it in a meaningful sentence. The aim is an understandable connection between language and message.
After reading a suitable passage, ask what happened, why it happened and which detail supports the answer. Distinguish a word you cannot recognise from a relationship you have misunderstood. Resolve the specific uncertainty, then reread without the original explanation beside you.
Use one useful expression in a different sentence or short response. Check whether its meaning still fits. Collecting impressive phrases is less helpful when they cannot be selected appropriately. A small teacher-checked example gives a clearer basis for using the expression independently.
Confirm the subject level and current examination format with school. Use appropriate tasks to practise understanding, expression and interaction. Keep reading, listening, speaking and writing visible where relevant instead of allowing composition practice to occupy every available session.
Review marked work for the particular demand missed. If the answer needs a reason, evidence must support that reason. If a writing task asks for a response to a situation, select content that addresses it. Do not import another PSLE route’s task expectations without checking.
Read a suitable model with the teacher’s task guidance. Identify the audience, purpose, content choices and sequence. Ask why an example belongs and how a sentence helps communicate the point. These decisions can be learned even when the wording is not memorised.
Close the model and respond to a changed prompt. Retain the planning method while selecting new content. If the response drifts back towards the original essay, return to the new question. Useful model study should make your choices clearer when the example is no longer visible.
Use the syllabus matching your confirmed course and cohort. For G1 K120, practise composing a relevant online-post response with the required computer input method during school-supported preparation. For G3 K320, practise the different purposes of an email and a composition.
G2 K220 has its own requirements; use its official document and teacher guidance rather than assuming either neighbouring format applies. Practise the language and the actual response process. More elaborate writing is not automatically better when it fails to perform the task required.
Use a reliable recording or teacher-approved material at a suitable level. Identify the situation, relevant information and speaker’s meaning before discussing your response. When speaking, answer the question, give a relevant reason and respond to a follow-up rather than reciting a prepared speech.
Check unclear pronunciation or wording with a teacher or reliable model. Listening again can support learning, while an independent attempt helps show what you understand without replay or prompting. Follow your actual syllabus for oral, listening and permitted-resource requirements.
Keep similar early and later reading and writing attempts. Look for more accurate meaning, relevant content and fewer repeated errors. Revisit a corrected expression in a fresh response after a delay so the improvement is checked beyond the original correction.
Parents can ask what the child can now explain and what needs another attempt. If difficulty persists, show the work samples to the teacher. The next practice should repair a visible connection and remain manageable alongside other subjects.
