What to Do on SEC Results Day | PSE Application Checklist 2028

Three students sit together at a wooden classroom table, looking through open workbooks and discussing their work.

SEC results day should be a decision day, not the first day a family learns what the post-secondary options mean. From January 2028, the first Full Subject-Based Banding cohort can use Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate results to apply through the new Post-Secondary Admissions Exercise for major post-secondary pathways.

The learner may have a mixed G1, G2 and G3 profile. That means families need to read every subject level and grade carefully, compute only the aggregates required for the routes being considered, apply official grade mapping where necessary, check minimum entry requirements and rank choices honestly.

The simplest way to reduce results-day panic is to prepare the process before the score arrives.

The Short Answer: What Should You Do on SEC Results Day?

  1. Record every subject, level and grade exactly.
  2. Do not map anything yet.
  3. List the pathways for which the learner may be eligible.
  4. Compute the correct route-specific aggregates.
  5. Apply official grade mapping only where required.
  6. Check minimum entry requirements.
  7. Update the aspirational, strong-fit and secure choice baskets.
  8. Rank choices according to genuine preference.
  9. Submit before the deadline and keep proof.

Step 1 — Read the SEC Correctly

The SEC records subjects at the levels actually sat.

  • G1: A to E grading structure.
  • G2: Grades 1 to 6.
  • G3: A1 to 9.

Write down the original result before doing any admissions calculation.

Read the How to Read SEC Results guide.

Step 2 — Separate the Pathways

Do not compute one score and assume it applies everywhere.

  • JC: revised L1R4.
  • MI: revised L1R4.
  • Polytechnic Year 1: ELR2B2.
  • PFP: ELMAB3 and prevailing intake rules.
  • Higher Nitec: route-specific criteria, with ELMAB3 relevant for selected progression calculations.

Step 3 — Apply Grade Mapping Only Where Needed

Grade mapping exists so more demanding subject levels can contribute to a progression aggregate at a reference level.

It does not replace the original SEC grade.

Read the SEC Grade Mapping guide.

Step 4 — Compute Gross and Net Separately

Keep the route’s gross aggregate separate from the net aggregate after eligible bonus points.

This matters because MOE has announced that the PSE tie-break sequence is based on applicants having the same net aggregate, with gross aggregate used later in the tie-break process.

Read the Gross vs Net Aggregate guide.

Step 5 — Check Minimum Entry Requirements

Aggregate eligibility is not enough. Polytechnic diplomas, JC subject combinations, PFP routes and ITE courses can have subject-specific requirements.

Check the official application-year source for every serious choice.

Step 6 — Use Choice Order Carefully

From 2028, MOE states that when applicants have the same net aggregate, PSE tie-breakers are:

  1. Citizenship
  2. Choice order
  3. Gross aggregate score
  4. Computerised balloting

The learner should therefore rank genuine preferences rather than treating the choice list casually.

Read the PSE Choice Order guide.

Step 7 — Update the Three Choice Baskets

Aspirational

Choices the learner genuinely wants and can reasonably reach if competition is favourable.

Strong Fit

Choices where results, interest and learning style align well.

Secure

Choices the learner would genuinely accept if the earlier options do not work out.

Every secure option should still be a real choice, not a course added only to fill space.

Step 8 — Check the Learner’s Preferred Learning Mode

  • Academic and fast: JC may fit.
  • Academic with more runway: MI may fit.
  • Applied and specialised: Polytechnic may fit.
  • Foundation into Polytechnic: PFP may fit for eligible learners.
  • Technical and practical: Higher Nitec may fit.

The score decides eligibility. The learning mode helps decide fit.

Step 9 — Research the Course Again

Results can make one option newly realistic and another less realistic. Re-open the actual course information.

  • curriculum;
  • assessment;
  • subject prerequisites;
  • internship;
  • travel;
  • progression;
  • course fit;
  • learner motivation.

Step 10 — Submit Carefully

Before final submission:

  • check every course code;
  • check the ranking order;
  • check the learner’s contact details;
  • check the deadline;
  • save screenshots or confirmation records;
  • do not assume a draft application has been submitted.

If the Result Is Better Than Expected

Do not automatically choose the most prestigious new option.

Re-evaluate fit. A stronger result expands choice; it does not make every higher-status route suitable.

If the Result Is Worse Than Expected

Do not collapse the conversation into failure.

  1. Identify the pathways still open.
  2. Check whether grade mapping changes eligibility.
  3. Rebuild the choice baskets.
  4. Compare alternative routes to the same long-term goal.
  5. Ask what the learner can become strong at next.

Different post-secondary routes can converge later through diploma, work-study, university and industry progression.

If the Learner Is Disappointed

Give the learner space to react, then move into concrete options.

Useful language is specific:

  • “These are the routes still open.”
  • “This course leads to these diploma options.”
  • “This pathway still keeps that field possible.”
  • “Let’s compare what the day-to-day learning will actually be like.”

Avoid turning one result day into a permanent identity.

A Parent Results-Day Document Pack

  • SEC result slip;
  • saved list of preferred pathways;
  • official admissions links;
  • aggregate worksheets;
  • course-specific minimum requirements;
  • open-house notes;
  • travel comparisons;
  • questions for schools or institutions;
  • submission confirmations.

The PSE 2028 Context

MOE has announced that from 2028 the PSE will cover JC, MI, Polytechnic and both 2-Year and 3-Year Higher Nitec admissions after SEC results are released in January.

DSA-JC, Polytechnic EAE and ITE EAE continue as early-admissions routes.

Read the PSE 2028 guide.

The eduKate SEC Results-Day Framework

  1. Read. Record the original SEC profile.
  2. Separate. Identify each pathway’s own aggregate.
  3. Map. Use official grade mapping only where needed.
  4. Verify. Check minimum requirements.
  5. Compare. Look at course fit, not only admission.
  6. Rank. Use genuine preference.
  7. Submit. Check every detail and deadline.
  8. Continue. Prepare for the learning environment chosen.

Useful Reading

SEC Results Day: Turn the Result Into the Next Good Decision

The SEC result is evidence about the learner’s current academic profile. It is not the learner’s identity and it is not the end of the pathway.

Read it accurately. Calculate carefully. Check the current rules. Then choose the next environment where the learner can keep becoming more capable.
