A solution can become wrong even when every sentence or calculation looks reasonable on its own. The problem appears when one important word quietly changes meaning midway. “Whole” begins as the original class, then later means the pupils who remain. “Average” begins as average score, then is treated as average number of pupils. “Source” begins as where information came from, then becomes the physical source of a substance. The same label is carrying two different definitions without announcing the change.
This volume develops one cross-subject PSLE habit: keep the definition fixed until the question explicitly changes it. When a word, symbol, category or label controls the answer, define what it means in the current step. If the meaning must change later, create a new label or mark a new stage. Do not let the old word silently acquire a new referent or quantity.
This is not a rule that everyday words can have only one meaning. English words are often polysemous, and Science and Mathematics reuse ordinary words in technical ways. The examination job is local consistency: inside one reasoning chain, the meaning must remain stable enough for the steps to connect.
A label is a contract
When you write ‘whole = original class’, later percentages using that whole should keep the same base unless a new whole is explicitly created.
The label tells every later step what the number means.
Symbols need stable meanings
If x means the number of red beads, do not later use x for total beads.
A reused symbol can make correct equations refer to different quantities.
Nouns need stable referents
If ‘the coach’ refers to Mr Tan, do not later treat the coach as a second person unless the passage introduces another coach.
Reference identity is part of definition control.
Comparison words need stable bases
More, less, greater and smaller must keep the property being compared fixed.
Do not compare amount on one side and percentage on the other.
Whole can change, but the change must be marked
After some pupils leave, the remaining group can become a new whole for a later fraction.
Call it remaining whole or new 100% rather than silently reusing the original base.
Rate needs a stable denominator
$4 per notebook cannot become $4 per pack halfway through the solution.
Keep the denominator attached.
Average needs a stable measured quantity
Average score and average number of pupils are different quantities.
The word average alone is incomplete.
Same needs a named property
Two objects can have the same temperature but different masses.
Say same temperature, same mass, same change or same rate.
Final needs a defined endpoint
Final temperature and final amount are different target quantities.
Keep the noun attached to the time word.
Source can mean different things across subjects
A light source produces light; an evidence source provides information; a water source supplies water.
Context chooses the definition.
Control has several technical uses
A controlled variable, control setup and controlling instruction are not interchangeable.
Use the full phrase where ambiguity could matter.
Part can mean physical piece or fractional share
A part in a ratio model is not automatically a detachable object.
Keep the representation meaning clear.
Change can mean difference or process
A change of 5 units is a numerical difference; a state change such as melting is a physical process.
Do not mix them because both use the word change.
Result can mean observation or calculated answer
A Science result table contains measured outcomes; a Mathematics result can be a computed quantity.
Do not transfer evidence rules blindly between meanings.
Stage boundaries deserve new labels
Before, after, Stage 1 and Stage 2 help show when a quantity has changed definition.
A new label prevents accidental carry-over.
A six-step definition-lock routine
- Circle the word, symbol or label carrying the relationship.
- Write what it means in five words or fewer.
- Use the same meaning in every dependent step.
- If the question changes the base, object, time or category, create a new label.
- Check that any comparison uses the same definition on both sides.
- Before finalising, translate the label back into ordinary words and confirm it still answers the question.
Forty-four worked definition-lock cases
Whole = original class
A class has 40 pupils; 25% leave; then one third of the remaining pupils join a club.
The likely definition error is whole silently changes. The original whole is 40; after pupils leave, the remaining whole is 30 for the phrase ‘one third of the remaining pupils’.
Mark original whole and remaining whole separately. Write a five-word definition beside the term before continuing.
Now scan every later use of the same word or symbol. If one use means something else, either restore the original meaning or create a new label for the new quantity, stage or role.
For delayed transfer, change the surface context but keep the definition problem. The learner should detect meaning drift even when the numbers, nouns or subject change.
100% = original price
An item is discounted, then the sale price receives another percentage change.
The likely definition error is old 100% reused. The second percentage may use the sale price as a new 100% if stated that way.
Label Stage 1 100% and Stage 2 100%. Write a five-word definition beside the term before continuing.
Now scan every later use of the same word or symbol. If one use means something else, either restore the original meaning or create a new label for the new quantity, stage or role.
For delayed transfer, change the surface context but keep the definition problem. The learner should detect meaning drift even when the numbers, nouns or subject change.
x = red beads
A learner lets x be red beads, then writes total=x after adding blue beads.
The likely definition error is symbol definition changes. Keep x as red beads and introduce total or another symbol.
Symbols do not change identity because the calculation becomes inconvenient.
One unit in bar model
One unit initially represents 6 pupils.
The likely definition error is unit later treated as $6. The bar-model unit remains pupils unless a new representation is introduced.
A visual unit also has a definition.
Average score
A class average score is 72.
The likely definition error is average treated as total. 72 is the mean score, not total marks.
Keep measured quantity attached.

For delayed transfer, change the surface context but keep the definition problem. The learner should detect meaning drift even when the numbers, nouns or subject change.
More students
Class A has more pupils than B.
The likely definition error is more percentage passed inferred. More pupils describes count, not pass rate.

A definition-change clinic
Some questions legitimately change the definition. A percentage can refer first to the original price and later to the discounted price. A pronoun can refer to one person in one paragraph and a different noun in another. A word such as light can mean illumination in Science and not-heavy in ordinary English. The repair is not to force one meaning forever.
Instead, mark the transition. “New 100% = sale price.” “Here, they refers to the volunteers.” “In this Science question, light means electromagnetic illumination, not weight.” A visible redefinition turns ambiguity into controlled reasoning.
The danger is silent change. If a term means A in Step 1 and B in Step 4 without a boundary, the chain becomes invalid even if both meanings are individually reasonable.
A cross-subject mini-audit
English: write the referent beside each ambiguous noun phrase or pronoun. Mathematics: write units and quantity names beside intermediate values. Science: write role labels such as observation, condition, source, pathway or response. These labels are small definition locks.
If a later sentence cannot be translated back using the same labels, inspect whether the definition changed. This often catches errors earlier than redoing the entire answer.
The method also improves communication. An examiner or teacher can follow the meaning of your work because the same symbol or term continues to refer to the same thing.
A seven-day definition-lock cycle
- Day 1: Mathematics symbols, units and quantity names.
- Day 2: percentage wholes and before-after stage labels.
- Day 3: English referents, roles and comparison bases.
- Day 4: Science observation, explanation, source and pathway labels.
- Day 5: terms that legitimately change meaning with explicit stage boundaries.
- Day 6: mixed questions containing one deliberate silent definition shift.
- Day 7: timed EMS practice with one final check: did any important word change meaning without being relabelled?
Parents and tutors: ask what the word means here
When a learner’s solution becomes inconsistent, point to the repeated word or symbol and ask, “What does this mean here?” Then ask the same question at the earlier step. If the answers differ, the definition has drifted.
Do not insist on technical vocabulary when a plain label works. “Original class”, “remaining class”, “measured temperature” and “character’s claim” are excellent definition locks.
If the definition stays stable and the answer is still wrong, move to the next layer: operation, evidence, arithmetic or language. The goal is diagnosis, not turning every error into a terminology lesson.
Frequently asked questions
Can a word have different meanings in the same question?
Yes, but the change should be clear from context or explicitly relabelled in your working.
Why are units useful?
They help lock the quantity type. cm, cm², L, pupils and km/h prevent numbers from drifting into different meanings.
Should I use more symbols?
Only when they reduce ambiguity. Too many labels can also create confusion.
What if the question itself changes the whole or base?
Create a new stage label such as original 100% and new 100%.
How does this help English?
It protects referents, comparison bases, certainty words and roles such as narrator, speaker and witness.
How does this help Science?
It separates observation from explanation, source from pathway, and measured result from inferred mechanism.
Official 2026 PSLE frame
SEAB’s 2026 PSLE English, Mathematics and Science syllabuses assess interpretation, application, reasoning and communication in subject-specific forms. Definition lock is a learner strategy for maintaining consistent meaning across those forms; it is not an additional official examination rule. See the 2026 PSLE formats page.
Batch routes
Use Vol 0073 for chronology, Vol 0074 for same-whole control and Vol 0075 for organism-boundary reasoning. The wider route remains the PSLE Learning Guide.
The performance rule
If the same word, symbol or label appears twice, make sure it still means the same thing. If the meaning changes, change the label too.
