How to Perform in PSLE | Learner’s Guide Vol 0072 | When Two Answers Both Look Plausible, Find the Constraint That Makes Only One Legal

A difficult PSLE question often does not offer one obviously correct route and several ridiculous ones. Two answers can both look plausible. Two inferences can both sound reasonable. Two numerical results can both fit part of the story. Two Science explanations can both match one observation. The deciding evidence is often not a bigger fact but a smaller constraint: only, after, at least, from the passage, same starting amount, one changed variable, the final state, or the unit requested.

This guide develops one cross-subject examination habit: when two answers both look plausible, find the constraint that makes only one legal. A legal answer satisfies every important condition in the question. An attractive answer may satisfy most of them while violating one decisive boundary. The goal is not to choose the more sophisticated-sounding option; it is to test both candidates against the full task.

This routine complements earlier guides on qualifiers, context constraints and decisive evidence. Its RFE job is narrower: keep both plausible answers alive long enough to identify the exact condition that eliminates one. That creates an observable decision process rather than a confidence-based guess.

Plausible is not the same as legal

An answer can fit the topic and still violate the exact question.

The legal answer must satisfy every required constraint, not merely sound relevant.

One constraint can decide the whole question

A boundary word, time point, source restriction or unit can eliminate an otherwise convincing answer.

Do not average evidence strength when one hard constraint is decisive.

Hard constraints differ from soft preferences

‘At least 3’ is a hard boundary. ‘A neat method’ is a preference.

When the question gives a hard condition, it outranks a familiar method or attractive wording.

English constraints often come from source and scope

From paragraph 4, according to the narrator, at that moment, most likely and except all narrow the answer space.

A true statement from elsewhere can still be illegal.

Mathematics constraints often come from quantity type

Whole-number count, maximum capacity, positive length, exact total and required unit can eliminate a numerically plausible result.

Interpretation belongs to the answer, not only the calculation.

Science constraints often come from design and measurement

Only one variable changed, same starting conditions, measured quantity and tested range can limit what the result supports.

A familiar mechanism is not legal if the design cannot distinguish it.

Time is a constraint

Before, after, initially, finally and at five minutes select different states.

An answer correct at another time can still be wrong here.

Identity is a constraint

The value for Setup P cannot be used for Q just because it is larger or listed first.

Labels carry ownership.

Unit is a constraint

Minutes, hours, litres, square centimetres and items describe different quantities.

A bare number can look plausible while answering the wrong unit.

Audience and purpose can be constraints

In Situational Writing, a message may be polite but still fail if it does not make the required request or provide the required information.

Communication constraints decide completeness.

Evidence source can be a constraint

If the question asks what the graph alone shows, outside knowledge cannot replace missing evidence.

Correct knowledge is not automatically admissible evidence.

Count and divisibility can be constraints

A count of pupils, buses or boxes may need a whole number.

A decimal can be mathematically produced but contextually illegal.

Comparison basis can be a constraint

Two candidates may compare different properties.

A fair answer must use the basis named or implied by the question.

Claim strength can be a constraint

Some, all, always, proves and suggests require different evidence strengths.

An overstrong answer can be eliminated even when its core idea is relevant.

No-solution can be legal

If no candidate satisfies all constraints, the correct conclusion may be that the proposed set has no valid solution or the information is insufficient.

Do not force one option merely because the exercise feels as though it should have a winner.

A seven-step legality routine

  1. Write the two plausible candidates side by side.
  2. List the hard constraints from the question.
  3. Test Candidate A against each constraint.
  4. Test Candidate B against each constraint.
  5. Identify the first constraint that one candidate violates.
  6. Confirm that the surviving candidate still satisfies all remaining conditions.
  7. State the answer using the constraint that decided it.

Forty worked legality tests

English inference: worried or guilty

A character checks the door repeatedly after losing an important envelope.

The tempting error is stronger word feels better. Worried fits the observed uncertainty; guilty requires evidence that the character caused or concealed something.

The constraint is evidence strength: do not add wrongdoing that the passage has not established.

Write the deciding constraint next to the rejected candidate. A visible reason such as “wrong time point”, “not whole”, “outside evidence window” or “two variables changed” is more useful than simply crossing it out.

Then test the surviving answer against the remaining conditions. One candidate can eliminate itself without automatically proving the other if the other also violates a different constraint.

For delayed transfer, change the subject surface while preserving the constraint type. The learner should recognise inclusivity, identity, scope, unit or evidence-source constraints without needing the original example.

English motive: protecting or deceiving

A character hides information from a younger sibling before a surprise celebration.

The tempting error is deception chosen because information is hidden. Protecting the surprise fits the stated purpose; deliberate harmful deception does not.

The constraint is motive context supplied by the passage.

English reference: teacher or pupil

A pronoun could grammatically refer to two nearby nouns.

The tempting error is nearest noun chosen automatically. Use number, role and surrounding actions to eliminate the referent that cannot perform the action.

Reference constraints can be grammatical and contextual.

English summary: cause or example

A paragraph contains one main reason followed by an example.

The tempting error is vivid example chosen as main point. The main reason survives; the example is supporting evidence.

The constraint is summary function, not memorability.

English vocabulary: annoyed or furious

The character sighs once and answers briefly.

The tempting error is strong emotion chosen. Annoyed may be defensible; furious overstates the evidence.

The constraint is degree.

The character later discovers the truth, but the question asks why she acted earlier.

The tempting error is later knowledge imported. Use only what she knew at the earlier time.

The constraint is knowledge state.

Write the deciding constraint next to the rejected candidate. A visible reason such as “wrong time point”, “not whole”, “outside evidence window” or “two variables changed” is more useful than simply crossing it out.

For delayed transfer, change the subject surface while preserving the constraint type. The learner should recognise inclusivity, identity, scope, unit or evidence-source constraints without needing the original example.

A constraint hierarchy for fast checking

When time is short, check hard constraints first. These include explicit words such as only, except, at least and final; mathematical impossibilities such as fractional buses; and scientific design facts such as two variables changing together. A hard violation can eliminate a candidate immediately.

Next check evidence strength. Does the candidate claim more than the passage, calculation or investigation supports? Finally check style and efficiency. A clumsy but legal answer can be refined; an elegant illegal answer must be rejected.

This hierarchy prevents a familiar bias: choosing the answer that sounds most complete before checking whether it is actually allowed by the task.

A two-candidate worksheet

During review, draw two columns: Candidate A and Candidate B. Down the side, list the constraints. Use a tick, cross or question mark for each candidate. Do not decide the winner until the matrix is complete enough to show the decisive row.

This is especially useful when a learner repeatedly says “both could be right”. Sometimes both are plausible at topic level, but only one survives the question’s exact boundary. At other times both genuinely remain possible, revealing insufficient evidence. The worksheet distinguishes those situations.

Once the learner becomes faster, shrink the method to one mental question: “What condition would make one of these illegal?”

A seven-day legality cycle

  1. Day 1: qualifiers and time-point constraints.
  2. Day 2: whole-number, unit and capacity constraints in Mathematics.
  3. Day 3: evidence-window and source constraints in English.
  4. Day 4: fair-test and measured-variable constraints in Science.
  5. Day 5: claim-strength constraints such as some versus all and suggests versus proves.
  6. Day 6: mixed two-candidate drills where sometimes both remain possible or neither is legal.
  7. Day 7: timed mixed EMS questions using only a short deciding-constraint note.

Parents and tutors: ask what makes the rejected answer illegal

When a learner chooses correctly, do not stop at the letter or number. Ask which constraint rules out the strongest alternative. This reveals whether the learner used evidence or simply recognised a familiar answer.

When two answers both seem possible, avoid telling the learner which one “sounds better”. Return to the task and list the hard conditions. The learner should discover whether the difference is evidence strength, time, unit, identity, scope or another constraint.

If both candidates satisfy every stated condition, consider whether the practice question is ambiguous or incomplete. Good diagnostic work includes recognising a defective item rather than forcing a false certainty.

Frequently asked questions

What if both answers are true?

One may still be illegal for the task because it uses the wrong source, time, unit, scope or response type.

What if eliminating one option leaves another that is also wrong?

Continue checking. Elimination does not prove the survivor until it satisfies the remaining constraints.

Should I always look for a trick word?

No. Constraints can come from mathematics, evidence design, labels and context as well as wording.

How is this different from guessing by elimination?

Legality testing gives a reason for rejection tied to the task rather than relying on which option looks least familiar.

Can both answers remain possible?

Yes, when evidence is insufficient or a practice item is ambiguous. Preserve uncertainty instead of inventing a tie-breaker.

How do I use this in open-ended questions?

Compare your two candidate interpretations or methods against the same constraints before committing to one.

Official 2026 PSLE frame

SEAB’s current 2026 PSLE formats cover English Language, Mathematics and Science, with each subject requiring candidates to interpret instructions and apply subject knowledge in the form demanded by the question. This legality routine is a learner decision tool, not an official marking formula. See the 2026 PSLE formats page.

Batch routes

Use Vol 0069 for English identity tracking, Vol 0070 for rate denominators and Vol 0071 for Science role chains. The wider route remains the PSLE Learning Guide.

The performance rule

When two answers both look reasonable, stop asking which sounds better. Ask which constraint makes one of them impossible for this exact question.
