Wait, What? “NIST Traceable” Does Not Mean NIST Tested This Product
A product listing says a thermometer is “NIST traceable”. A calibration sticker carries a long certificate number. The wording sounds extremely official.
A learner could easily conclude: “NIST tested this thermometer, approved it and guarantees every reading.”
That conclusion goes much further than the phrase supports. NIST explains metrological traceability as a property of a measurement result: the result can be related to a specified reference through a documented, unbroken chain of calibrations, with each link contributing to the measurement uncertainty. NIST also states that it does not certify or guarantee the traceability of measurement results provided by other organisations merely because NIST appears somewhere in the calibration chain.
