Wait, What? NASA Says “Planet Candidate,” but the Picture Shows a Planet
A science post announces an exciting world around another star. The headline calls it an exoplanet candidate. Beside the headline is a polished artist’s illustration showing a round planet with clouds, ice and a glowing horizon. A learner says, “There it is. They found the planet.”
Maybe. But the word candidate matters. In exoplanet science, a candidate is a signal or object that is consistent with a planet but has not yet completed the evidence process needed for confirmation. NASA explains that transit searches can find repeated dips in a star’s brightness that may indicate a planet, but other causes can sometimes mimic a transit. Follow-up observations and checks are used to rule out alternative explanations.
This is a powerful PSLE Science transfer habit: do not let a picture or an exciting noun erase the evidence status written beside it. “Candidate” is not a weak word. It is a scientific status telling you exactly how far the conclusion can travel.

No. An exoplanet candidate has not automatically been confirmed as a planet. The available data show a signal consistent with a planet, but scientists must check whether another explanation could produce the same signal and whether follow-up evidence supports the planetary interpretation.

Notice the conditional phrase: if the signal is planetary. The measured object is first a pattern in data. The planet is an explanation for that pattern. Confirmation requires enough evidence to make competing explanations much less plausible.

A Signal Is Not Yet the Object That Explains the Signal
This distinction appears throughout science. A sensor response is not automatically the substance that might have caused it. A dark patch on an image is not automatically a crater. A repeating dip in starlight is not automatically a planet until the method has dealt with other plausible causes.
That does not make the candidate meaningless. A candidate is useful precisely because it has passed enough initial checks to deserve attention. The scientific mistake is not to take candidates seriously. The mistake is to erase the uncertainty before the evidence earns the stronger status.
Why Repeated Dips Help but Do Not Finish the Job
NASA’s explanation of the TESS search process notes that repeated dips at regular intervals can indicate a planet. Repetition is important because an orbiting object should produce a recurring pattern. But another system can sometimes create repeated dimming too. The repeated pattern strengthens the candidate interpretation without making every alternative impossible.
A Primary learner can translate this into a general rule: evidence becomes stronger when a predicted pattern repeats, but the conclusion still depends on whether rival explanations can produce the same pattern.
The Representation Check: Artist’s Concept Is Not the Observation
A discovery alert may show an artist’s concept because the real observation is a light curve, spectrum, position measurement or other indirect signal. The illustration helps a reader imagine the possible planet. It does not mean a camera captured the planet’s oceans, mountains, clouds or colours.
If the caption says “artist’s concept,” preserve that status. Ask what was actually measured. The more vivid the image, the more important this discipline becomes.
Method Check: What Could Mimic a Planet?
Suppose a telescope sees a repeating decrease in light. A planet transiting its star is one explanation. But an eclipsing binary star in the same field, a background source blended into the measurement, star activity or an instrumental artifact may produce a similar pattern. Scientists examine the shape, timing, position and other observations to test these possibilities.
For a Primary 5/6 learner, the exact astrophysical list is less important than the evidence move: when two explanations can make the same observation, the observation alone cannot choose between them. Look for a follow-up test that makes different predictions.
Worked Case 1: The Candidate Is Announced
A fictional article says, “Scientists identify a possible Earth-sized planet. The object is listed as a candidate pending further confirmation.” A social-media account reposts it as “Second Earth confirmed!”
The repost makes two unjustified jumps. First, it changes candidate into confirmed planet. Second, it changes a size estimate into “Second Earth,” which implies many properties not measured. A careful restatement is: “Scientists identified a candidate whose estimated size may be similar to Earth’s; confirmation and further observations are still needed.”
Worked Case 2: Another Telescope Sees the Pattern
A second telescope observes a signal at the predicted time. Does that strengthen the candidate?
Yes, if the second observation is suitable and independent enough to test the same predicted event. Evidence from another instrument can reduce the chance that the first signal was an instrument-specific artifact. But the learner should still ask whether the observation rules out the important alternative explanations rather than simply counting telescopes.
Worked Case 3: The Candidate Disappears From the List
Follow-up observations show that the signal came from an eclipsing stellar companion. A learner says, “The original scientists were wrong to call it a candidate.”
Not necessarily. If the original evidence genuinely met the candidate criteria, “candidate” was the correct cautious status at that time. Science often uses temporary statuses to organise what the evidence currently supports. Rejecting a candidate after a stronger test is the system working as intended.
Worked Case 4: Confirmed Planet, Unknown Atmosphere
A planet is confirmed, so a learner concludes that the colours in its illustration show its real atmosphere.
Confirmation answers one question: whether the evidence supports the existence of the planet. It does not automatically answer every other question about surface, clouds, composition, life or climate. A stronger status for one claim does not upgrade unrelated claims.
What Evidence Strengthens the Planet Interpretation?
- Repeated signals at the predicted period.
- Follow-up observations that confirm the signal is associated with the target star.
- Checks that rule out eclipsing stars or other false positives.
- Independent evidence from another suitable method or instrument.
- A consistent model that predicts later observations successfully.
- A catalogue or paper that clearly changes status from candidate to confirmed after review.
What Weakens It?
- A signal that appears only once when repeated events are expected.
- A pattern that changes in a way inconsistent with the proposed orbit.
- Evidence that the dimming comes from another star.
- An instrumental artifact that reproduces the apparent signal.
- A headline that omits the word “candidate” while the scientific source retains it.
- An illustration presented without a caption explaining that it is not direct imagery.
Tempting but Invalid Reasoning
“NASA named it, so it is confirmed.” No. Catalogues name and track candidates too.
“There are three transits, so there cannot be another explanation.” Repetition helps, but alternatives still need testing.
“The picture shows clouds, so clouds were observed.” Not if the image is an artist’s concept.
“Candidate means scientists do not know anything.” No. Candidate status means the evidence supports a serious hypothesis but has not yet earned the final status.
Model and Measurement Limits
Many exoplanets are detected indirectly because their stars are far brighter than the planets. The measured light can include noise, stellar variability and signals from neighbouring objects. Planet size and orbital properties may depend on estimates of the host star. A candidate’s parameters can change as better stellar information or additional observations become available.
The correct learner response is not “the numbers are unreliable.” It is “the numbers belong to a method with stated assumptions and uncertainty.” Scientific care is the ability to preserve that context.
How Far Can the Conclusion Travel?
From a candidate status you may say that scientists have identified evidence consistent with an exoplanet and consider the signal worthy of further checking. You may not automatically say the planet is confirmed, that it is habitable, that it has an atmosphere, or that the artist’s image shows what it looks like.
After confirmation, you may say the evidence supports the planet’s existence. You still need separate evidence for size, mass, atmosphere, temperature and habitability.
PSLE-Style Transfer Case
A fictional telescope records three similar brightness dips from Star M. A report labels Object M-b an “exoplanet candidate.” A pupil writes: “Therefore a planet definitely orbits Star M and the drawing shows its real surface.” Evaluate.
A strong response: “The conclusion is too strong. The repeated dips support a possible planet, but the candidate status means alternative explanations still need to be ruled out or follow-up evidence is still required. The drawing is a representation unless direct imaging evidence is stated, so it does not prove the planet’s real surface appearance.”
Delayed Independent Return
Later you read “candidate species,” “candidate material” or “candidate signal” in another branch of science. The transferable question is the same: what has the evidence established already, what alternatives remain, and what event changes the status from candidate to confirmed?

- Repeated dip: Does it prove a planet? — It supports the hypothesis but does not automatically rule out mimics.
- Candidate label: What does it tell you? — The signal is plausible enough for follow-up but not yet confirmed.
- Artist’s concept: What should you check? — The caption and the actual measured data.
- Follow-up rejects the candidate: Was the earlier status necessarily dishonest? — No; a candidate can be correctly classified at an earlier evidence stage.
- Planet confirmed: Does that prove habitability? — No; that is a separate claim requiring separate evidence.

Use three cards: signal, candidate, confirmed. Give the learner a fictional light-curve description and ask which card the evidence earns. Then add a possible false-positive explanation. Ask what follow-up observation would help discriminate between the two explanations.
Do not reward the fastest answer. Reward the learner who keeps the language calibrated: “consistent with,” “supports,” “candidate,” “confirmed,” and “does not yet establish.” These are not evasive phrases. They are tools for matching the strength of a statement to the strength of the evidence.

Scientific status words are part of the evidence, not decorative caution. When you see “candidate,” keep it in your conclusion until stronger evidence earns a different word. The goal is not to sound uncertain about everything. The goal is to be exactly as certain as the evidence allows.
