A learner asks, “What am I actually supposed to get better at today?”
The tutor points to the school syllabus: “Algebraic manipulation.” That answer is technically correct and educationally weak. It names the territory without telling the learner what successful work will look like.
So the tutor tries again: “You must remember these four steps.” Now the goal is visible, but something else has gone wrong. The four steps may fit the examples on the page while quietly replacing the broader skill of recognising structure and selecting a valid manipulation.
Clear objectives can orient learning. Poorly translated objectives can narrow it.
The Learning-Objective Translation Gate is the tutor’s discipline of converting a broad school, curriculum or assessment goal into language the learner can use to guide action and recognise success—without reducing the target to task completion, answer mimicry or a checklist that performs the thinking for them.
A good objective should make the destination clearer while keeping the learner responsible for reaching it. A good success criterion should help the learner inspect quality without turning the criterion into a hidden answer key.
Quick Answer
- Start from the capability, not from the worksheet.
- Translate unfamiliar curriculum language into student-usable language without changing the underlying standard.
- Separate the learning objective from the activity: “compare explanations using evidence” is not the same as “complete questions 1–8”.
- Use success criteria to describe qualities of successful performance, not to prescribe every move.
- Criteria should make quality inspectable while preserving meaningful method choice where method choice belongs to the target.
- Do not make criteria so broad that they add no guidance or so specific that they become an answer template.
- Connect the objective to relevant prior knowledge so the learner knows what old capability the new work builds from.
- Revisit the objective during and after practice; do not display it once and forget it.
- Use examples and non-examples to clarify criteria when words alone are too abstract.
- Allow different valid demonstrations of success when the construct permits them.
- When support is faded, check whether the learner can still identify what successful work requires without the visible checklist.
- Use objectives to coordinate tutor, learner, school and family language—not to create a competing private curriculum.
1. What This Volume Owns
This volume owns the translation layer between an external educational goal and the learner-facing description of what they are trying to learn and how they can recognise quality.
It does not own generic lesson planning, curriculum design or the learner-facing study interface as a whole. It also does not replace the earlier Task-Purpose Gate, which asks what a task is for. Here the question is narrower: once the intended capability is known, how should the tutor state it so the learner can actually use it?
AERO’s current Explain Learning Objectives practice guide describes learning objectives as concise statements of what students are expected to learn and emphasises the use of success criteria, prior knowledge and student-accessible language. That is a strong classroom foundation. Private tutoring adds another pressure: the tutor often works between school wording, textbook wording, parent expectations and the learner’s current mental model. Translation quality matters.
2. An Objective Is Not a Topic Label
“Fractions”, “inference”, “photosynthesis”, “algebra” and “essay writing” are topics. They do not tell the learner what capability is being built.
Compare “Fractions” with “Compare two fractions with unlike denominators and justify which is larger using a representation or equivalent values.” The second statement reveals the learner operation: comparison plus justification. It also helps the tutor choose evidence that actually samples that operation.
A topic label can still be useful for navigation. It should not be mistaken for a learning objective.
3. An Objective Is Not an Activity
“Complete a timed paper”, “write a composition”, “do ten simultaneous-equation questions”, “watch this video” and “finish the worksheet” are activities. Learners can complete them without necessarily changing the intended capability.
A tutor should be able to finish the sentence: “We are doing this activity so that you can become better able to…” If the answer is unclear, the activity may be driving the lesson rather than serving it.
For example: “We are doing this mixed set so that you can decide which algebraic method applies when the question does not name the topic.” The activity is the mixed set. The learning objective is method selection under reduced cueing.
4. An Objective Is Not a Mark Target
“Score 80%” can be a performance goal. It is not a sufficient learning objective. The same 80% can be produced by different strengths and weaknesses, task mixes and support conditions.
A learner needs to know what will change in the work, not merely what number adults hope to see. “Reduce unsupported inference errors by selecting the most direct textual evidence” is closer to a capability target. The mark may follow, but the route is intellectually visible.
5. Success Criteria Describe Quality
Success criteria answer a practical question: what features would make this performance count as successful?
For a scientific explanation, useful criteria might include: identifies the relevant change, connects cause to effect in the correct direction, uses evidence from the scenario and avoids a claim wider than the evidence supports. These criteria describe qualities.
They do not need to prescribe the exact sentence. If the tutor gives “When X happens, Y happens because Z” for every question, the scaffold may be useful early on, but it should not be mistaken for the final criterion of independent explanation.
6. The Checklist Can Quietly Become the Skill
Checklists are attractive because they are visible. “Underline key words. Write formula. Substitute. Calculate. State units.” A learner can follow them.
The danger is that the checklist may contain decisions the learner ultimately needs to make. If the target is method selection, a checklist that tells the learner which method to use is not merely clarifying success; it is supplying the target operation.
The tutor should ask which parts of the checklist are quality criteria and which parts are temporary scaffolds. Quality criteria may remain. Scaffolds should fade when independence matters.
7. Translate the Language, Not the Standard
Curriculum and assessment language can be unfamiliar. A learner may not understand “evaluate”, “justify”, “analyse relationships” or “synthesise information”. Translating these verbs can improve access.
But translation should not lower cognitive demand. “Evaluate” should not become “say whether you like it”. It may need to become “judge the claim using relevant criteria and evidence, then explain why the judgement follows”.
The learner gets clearer language while the underlying intellectual job remains intact.
8. Start From Prior Knowledge
AERO’s current practice guidance emphasises connecting learning objectives to prior knowledge. This matters because objectives become meaningful when the learner can locate the new demand relative to something already known.
“Today we are learning to solve simultaneous equations” may feel like a new island. “You already know how to solve one equation. Today you are learning how two equations can jointly constrain two unknowns” shows continuity.
Prior knowledge should orient the learner, not consume the lesson. If the prerequisite is missing, repair it. If it is secure, use it as the bridge and move on.
9. The Objective Should Survive a Change of Task
A powerful test of objective quality is whether it still makes sense when the worksheet changes.
“Complete page 42” disappears when the resource changes. “Identify the relationship represented by a ratio before calculating” survives across textbook, whiteboard, digital platform and school paper.
Durable objectives point to capabilities rather than resources.
10. The Objective Should Be Narrow Enough to Guide
“Improve English” is too broad. “Write better essays” is still broad. “Choose evidence that directly supports the inference and explain the connection” is narrow enough to guide a session.
Narrow does not mean trivial. It means the learner can tell what kind of improvement is being pursued and the tutor can choose evidence that responds to it.
11. The Objective Should Be Broad Enough to Remain the Skill
Over-narrowing creates a different problem. “Use the word ‘therefore’ in every explanation” may improve a visible feature while missing causal reasoning. “Include exactly three adjectives” may produce a composition artefact while weakening authentic description.
The objective should target the intellectual function, not a superficial proxy that is merely easy to check.
12. Constructed Case: Alicia and the Algebra Steps
Constructed teaching case. Alicia is learning algebraic factorisation. The tutor gives a four-step card. Alicia follows it accurately on every routine example.
The stated success criterion is “follow all four steps”. That is convenient but wrong. The target is to recognise a common factor, represent the expression as a product and verify by expansion.
The tutor rewrites the criteria around those qualities. The four-step card remains a temporary scaffold. Later, the card is removed and Alicia is given expressions where the common factor appears in different positions. Success now depends on the algebraic relation, not obedience to the card.
13. Constructed Case: Beatrice and the Composition Checklist
Constructed teaching case. Beatrice uses a composition checklist: five paragraphs, two similes, three sensory details, one dialogue exchange and a reflective ending.
Her writing becomes formulaic. The checklist has become a recipe for visible features rather than a description of narrative effectiveness.
The tutor replaces it with criteria tied to reader experience: establishes the situation clearly, develops a consequential change, chooses details that make the event concrete, keeps actions causally coherent and ends in a way that resolves or meaningfully reframes the experience. Different stories can now succeed differently.
14. Constructed Case: Ciara and the Science Formula
Constructed teaching case. Ciara has learnt a sentence frame for causal explanation. She can fill the blanks but struggles when the scenario contains two possible mechanisms.
The objective had drifted from “select and explain the relevant causal mechanism” to “complete the sentence frame”.
The tutor keeps the frame for one supported example, then changes the success criteria: select the relevant cause, connect it to the observed effect, exclude the competing explanation using the information given. The frame becomes optional support rather than the definition of success.
15. Constructed Case: Denise and the Timed Paper
Constructed teaching case. Denise’s goal is described as “finish Paper 1 in time”. She begins rushing from the first minute.
The tutor reframes the objective: “allocate time so that routine items remain accurate and enough time remains to attempt the final section.” Success criteria include reaching defined checkpoints without sacrificing the protected accuracy floor.
The new objective preserves performance quality instead of turning speed into the sole target.
16. Constructed Case: Emily and Independent Studying
Constructed teaching case. Emily’s objective is “be more independent”. Nobody can tell what success looks like.
The tutor translates it into current learner decisions: choose the first task from the week’s evidence, prepare required resources, work until the help rule is reached, record unfinished work and state the next step before stopping.
These are not permanent definitions of independence. They are observable components relevant to Emily’s present route. As she improves, the criteria expand.
17. Success Criteria Can Reveal Hidden Disagreement
A school teacher, tutor, parent and learner may all agree on the phrase “improve comprehension” while meaning different things. One imagines literal accuracy. Another cares about inference. Another cares about speed. The learner thinks success means finishing the passage.
Writing the criteria exposes the disagreement early. That is useful. It allows adults to align expectations before the learner is judged against invisible standards.
18. Criteria Should Distinguish Quality From Presentation
Neatness, complete sentences and formatting can matter. They should not quietly replace the underlying reasoning target.
If the objective is evidence-based inference, a beautifully formatted answer with weak evidence should not satisfy the main criterion. If presentation is also an assessed requirement, keep it as a separate criterion so the learner can see what each dimension means.
19. Criteria Should Not Reward One Valid Method Only
In Mathematics, Science reasoning, writing and studying, more than one method may be valid. A criterion such as “use the taught method” can turn instructional preference into a fake correctness rule.
Where method flexibility belongs to the construct, criteria should focus on validity, efficiency, clarity and assessability rather than enforcing one path. Where a specific method is itself the learning target, say so explicitly.
20. Use Examples and Non-Examples Carefully
Success criteria can remain abstract. A pair of examples can make them visible. Show one response that uses relevant evidence and one that quotes a true but indirect detail. Ask what difference matters.
Do not let the example become the answer pattern learners imitate mechanically. Vary surface and wording. Ask learners to explain why the example satisfies the criterion.
21. Revisit the Objective During the Lesson
A learning objective printed at the top of a page is easy to ignore. AERO’s guidance emphasises referring back to objectives and success criteria throughout instruction.
In tuition, revisit at decision points. “Which part of our target did that question test?” “You calculated correctly, but did you select the base independently?” “What does our criterion say about evidence quality?”
The objective becomes a working reference rather than wall decoration.
22. Let the Learner Use the Criteria
If only the tutor understands the criteria, they are marking rules, not learner-facing guidance.
Ask the learner to inspect their own work against one or two criteria before receiving feedback. “Which sentence contains your strongest evidence?” “Where did you show why the relation is proportional?” “What would you check before calling this independent?”
Self-checking should not become self-grading theatre. The purpose is to make quality features available for learner control.
23. Criteria Should Fade When They Perform Too Much Thinking
A novice may need explicit prompts. Later, the same prompts can become dependency.
If the criterion list tells the learner to identify the variable, compare values, select the relationship and state the conclusion, it may be performing the entire reasoning chain. That can be appropriate during guided practice. It should not remain the sole evidence of independence.
Reduce the visibility of process prompts while retaining quality standards. Eventually the learner should be able to reconstruct what good work requires.
24. Do Not Confuse Criteria With Rubric Scores
A rubric can operationalise quality, but numerical categories can create false precision. “Reasoning 3/4” is useful only if the descriptors are meaningful and the score changes a decision.
For routine tutoring, a binary or descriptive check may be clearer: relevant evidence selected / explanation link incomplete / support required. The goal is to improve the next attempt, not manufacture a miniature assessment system.
25. School Criteria and Tuition Criteria Should Translate, Not Compete
If school uses one set of terms and tuition invents another, the learner can end up running two systems. Preserve the school’s legitimate academic language where possible, then explain it in learner-usable form.
For example, keep “justify” if that is the school command word, but attach a working translation: “give a reason supported by evidence or mathematics that makes the conclusion warranted.”
The tutor should increase language resolution, not replace the school’s vocabulary with a private dialect.
26. Objectives in Three-Student Tutorials
Three learners can share a broad objective while carrying different current criteria. All may be learning inference, but Alicia may need to select direct evidence, Beatrice may need to explain the link, and Ciara may need to sustain the same quality without a highlighted clue.
Do not multiply public objectives until the lesson becomes fragmented. State the shared capability and privately track the next discriminating criterion for each learner.
27. Objectives Around AI-Assisted Work
AI tools make objective clarity especially important. If the objective is “produce a polished paragraph”, an AI rewrite may satisfy the artefact goal. If the objective is “select and organise evidence independently”, the same AI help may perform the target operation.
Declare whether success concerns the product, the learner capability or both. Then set tool boundaries accordingly.
A better output is not automatically evidence that the learning objective was achieved.
28. Objectives Around Access Supports
Success criteria should not require removing legitimate access supports that are not part of the target. If the objective is mathematical reasoning, a reading support may be appropriate when decoding is not being assessed.
Conversely, if reading fluency is the target, the same support changes what is being demonstrated. The objective defines which assistance is compatible with valid evidence.
29. Parent Communication: Explain the Target, Not Every Activity
Parents often see worksheets and ask why tuition is “still doing the same topic”. A clear objective can show that the intellectual demand has changed.
She can already execute the percentage calculation. This week the objective is different: she must identify the correct base from unfamiliar wording without a cue. The questions look similar because we are isolating that decision.
This is more informative than reporting pages completed.
30. The Objective Translation Card
- External goal: What school, curriculum or performance goal is being addressed?
- Capability: What must the learner know or be able to do?
- Prior knowledge: What existing capability does this build on?
- Learner language: Can the learner understand the target without losing its intellectual demand?
- Success qualities: What features make performance successful?
- Method freedom: Which choices should remain the learner’s?
- Support: Which criteria are standards and which are temporary scaffolds?
- Variation: Could success be demonstrated on a different task?
- Review: When will the objective be revisited during practice?
- Independence: Can the learner later reconstruct what quality requires without the visible checklist?
31. Research Foundation and Limits
AERO’s Explain Learning Objectives practice guide, published in 2024 and updated in 2025, recommends creating well-informed learning objectives and success criteria, explaining them in accessible language, activating prior knowledge and using the objectives effectively during teaching. Its 2025–2026 videos of practice show teachers referring to objectives and criteria within real lessons across primary and secondary settings.
Those resources are designed for classrooms. They do not validate a specific private-tuition objective template, nor do they imply that displaying an objective alone produces learning. The tutoring application in this volume depends on broader principles already present in the Handbook: construct coverage, support provenance, transfer, feedback use and independence.
The distinction between quality criteria and process scaffolds is especially important. A visible support can improve performance while still performing part of the target operation. Tutors therefore need later fresh evidence under appropriately reduced support when independence is part of the claim.
32. Common Failure Modes
- Topic as objective: “Today: fractions.”
- Activity as objective: “Finish ten questions.”
- Mark as objective: “Get 80%.”
- Checklist becomes skill: rewarding following steps instead of owning the underlying decision.
- Translation lowers demand: simplifying command language until the intellectual job changes.
- Criteria give away answer: making independent method selection impossible to observe.
- One-method rule: rejecting valid alternative methods when flexibility belongs to the construct.
- Presentation replaces reasoning: scoring neatness while the core explanation remains weak.
- Objective never revisited: displaying it once and letting the worksheet run the lesson.
- Private tuition dialect: teaching terms that conflict needlessly with school language.
33. The Thirty-Second Gate
If the learner follows my stated success criteria perfectly, will they necessarily have performed the target capability—or have I accidentally replaced part of the capability with instructions?
If the criteria perform the thinking, they are scaffolds. Name them honestly and plan the fade.
34. The Independence Direction
The strongest learner eventually stops asking, “What does the teacher want?” and starts asking, “What would make this answer valid, clear and sufficient?”
That shift depends on internalising standards rather than memorising teacher preferences. The tutor can support it by making quality visible, then gradually handing ownership of the criteria to the learner.
Alicia learns to recognise when a mathematical method is justified. Beatrice learns what makes evidence directly support an inference. Ciara learns what a causal explanation must contain even when the sentence frame disappears. Emily learns to define what “finished” means before beginning a study block.
Eventually the objective no longer needs to sit at the top of the page. It has become part of how the learner sees the work.

Name the capability. Translate the language. Keep the standard.
Separate the objective from the activity and the mark target. Describe the qualities of successful work. Make those qualities understandable without giving away the decisions the learner is supposed to make. Use examples to clarify, scaffolds to support and fresh tasks to verify.
Then let the visible criteria become less necessary as the learner learns to recognise quality independently.
A good learning objective gives the learner a destination. It does not secretly carry them there.
