Wait, What? A Scientific Paper Can Be Public Before It Has Passed Peer Review
A student sees a science headline online: “Researchers Have Discovered a New Effect.” The article links to a full scientific paper. It has authors, graphs, methods, references and pages of technical writing. It looks finished.
At the top, however, there is one small label: preprint.
That label matters. A preprint is a complete public draft of scientific work that has not yet been certified by peer review. It can contain serious, careful research. It can also change after experts examine the methods, analysis and conclusions. Sometimes the changes are small. Sometimes they are important. Sometimes the paper is later published after review. Sometimes it is revised repeatedly. Sometimes it is never formally published.
The scientific mistake is to move to either extreme. “It is a preprint, so it must be rubbish” is too dismissive. “It is a full paper online, so it has already been proven” is too trusting. The stronger habit is to ask what stage of the evidence process you are looking at and what the evidence itself supports.

Original Reality Lab Case: The Fast-Growing Seedling Preprint
This is an original composite teaching case. It is not copied from a real paper.
A research team studies a fictional treatment called Solution R. They grow 24 seedlings under controlled conditions. Twelve receive ordinary water. Twelve receive Solution R. After ten days, the treated group is taller on average. The researchers upload a preprint titled “Solution R Accelerates Early Seedling Growth”.

A science-news account posts, “Scientists prove Solution R makes plants grow faster.”
What can a learner say? The preprint reports evidence of a difference in this experiment. But “proves plants grow faster” travels farther than the evidence. The experiment used one plant type, one concentration, one growth period, one set of conditions and a modest sample. The manuscript has also not yet completed peer review. The correct response is not to reject it automatically. It is to preserve the evidence while limiting the claim.

What a Preprint Actually Is
The U.S. National Library of Medicine describes preprints as complete public drafts of scientific documents that have not yet been certified by peer review. Scientists use them because traditional publication can take time. Posting earlier can make results discoverable, invite feedback and allow other researchers to see work sooner.
That speed creates a trade-off. The work becomes available before the additional scrutiny that occurs during formal peer review. Readers therefore need to keep the paper’s stage visible while evaluating it.
A preprint is not necessarily “unfinished” in the everyday sense. It may contain a complete experiment and full analysis. The key distinction is that it has not yet completed a particular external review process.
Peer Review Adds Scrutiny, Not a Truth Stamp
Peer reviewers can ask whether the research question is clear, whether methods are appropriate, whether the analysis matches the design, whether alternative explanations were handled, whether conclusions go beyond the data and whether important limitations are missing.
Authors may revise their paper in response. That is why a later journal article can differ from an earlier preprint. The National Library of Medicine warns readers that results and conclusions may change as a result of peer review and later versions.
But peer review is not a machine that removes every mistake. A peer-reviewed paper can later be corrected, challenged or retracted. The scientific habit is therefore layered: publication stage matters, but the evidence still has to be read.
The Provenance Check: Which Version Are You Reading?
One of the most important questions is surprisingly simple: which version?
- What date was this version posted?
- Has the preprint been revised?
- Does a later version change the methods, data or conclusion?
- Has a peer-reviewed publication appeared?
- If a news article cites the study, which version did the reporter use?
A screenshot of one early abstract can remain online even after the authors upload a corrected version. A learner who follows the evidence trail instead of the screenshot is doing real scientific source work.
The Representation Check: What Does the Headline Hide?
Headlines often remove publication-stage labels because “preliminary preprint result under review” sounds less dramatic than “scientists discover”. A careful reader reconstructs the missing information.

Method Before Status
Suppose a beautifully labelled peer-reviewed paper compares two products but changes three variables at once. Suppose a clearly labelled preprint uses a careful randomised design, reports all measurements and openly discusses uncertainty. Which deserves more attention?
The peer-review label matters, but scientific reasoning cannot stop at labels. A learner should still inspect the method. Ask what was changed, what was measured, what was held comparable, how many observations were made, whether the comparison fits the claim, what uncertainty remains and what alternative explanation is still plausible.
What Evidence Would Strengthen a Preprint Claim?
- The methods are described clearly enough to understand what was tested.
- The raw or processed data are available where appropriate.
- The analysis matches the study design.
- The authors separate observation from interpretation.
- The paper reports limitations and uncertainty rather than hiding them.
- Independent groups later obtain similar results.
- A later peer-reviewed version survives expert scrutiny without the central result collapsing.
- Corrections, revisions and version history are visible.
What Would Weaken It?
- The headline is much stronger than the manuscript.
- The sample is tiny but the conclusion is universal.
- The preprint version changes substantially, yet old headlines continue circulating.
- Important failed trials or exclusions are not explained.
- The comparison does not control obvious alternative causes.
- A later peer-reviewed version removes or weakens the dramatic conclusion.
- Independent replication repeatedly fails.
Worked Case 1: The Preprint That Later Changes
Version 1 reports that Material A is 20% stronger than Material B. After feedback, the authors discover a calibration error and upload Version 2 showing a 7% difference. A social post still shares the 20% claim.
The correct Reality Lab move is to update the evidence object. The old post may accurately describe what Version 1 said, but it no longer describes the authors’ current analysis. Scientific communication has a version history.
Worked Case 2: The Preprint That Later Survives Review
A preprint reports a clear effect. Months later a peer-reviewed paper appears with almost the same methods, data and conclusion. Does that mean the original preprint was “wrong until publication”? No. It means the early result later survived an additional layer of scrutiny. Publication stage changed the amount of review behind the claim, not the historical measurements that had already been collected.
Worked Case 3: The Peer-Reviewed Paper With Weak Transfer
A peer-reviewed experiment finds a relationship in one laboratory species under one temperature. An advertisement says the result proves the same outcome for every species in every climate. Peer review does not grant permission for that transfer. Generalisation still has to be justified.
Worked Case 4: Two Preprints Disagree
Preprint A reports an effect. Preprint B reports no clear effect. A learner should not count papers like votes and choose 1–1 = tie. Compare methods, samples, conditions, measurement quality and uncertainty. The disagreement may reveal a boundary condition or a methodological difference.
Tempting Reasoning That Fails
- “It is on PubMed, so it must be peer reviewed.” NLM includes some NIH-supported preprints and labels their status.
- “Preprint means fake.” Preprints can contain serious scientific work; the point is that they have not yet completed peer review.
- “Peer reviewed means proven.” Peer review adds expert scrutiny but does not guarantee correctness.
- “The newest version must be true.” Newer is not automatically better; inspect what changed and why.
- “If a preprint changes, the authors were dishonest.” Revision after feedback can be science working as intended.
Model and Measurement Limits
Publication status is evidence about process, not a measurement of truth. It tells you something about what review stage the manuscript has reached. It does not directly tell you the size of an experimental effect, whether the sample was representative, whether the instrument was accurate or whether the conclusion can generalise.
Different research fields also use preprints differently. Some fields have long traditions of sharing them; others use them more cautiously. A Reality Lab learner does not need a universal rule. The durable question is whether the communication tells readers clearly what stage the evidence is in.
How Far Can the Conclusion Travel?
A strong preprint can justify saying, “This research team reports this result under these conditions, in a manuscript that has not yet completed peer review.” It may justify more if the design and evidence are especially strong. It does not justify silently removing the preprint status or turning one early study into a universal scientific fact.
A later peer-reviewed publication can strengthen confidence in the review process behind the work, but it still inherits the evidence boundaries of the actual study.
PSLE-Style Transfer Case
A website says, “A new study proves that blue light increases the growth of Plant X.” The linked manuscript is labelled “preprint”. The experiment used 10 plants under blue light and 10 under white light for one week.
Question: Give two reasons the website’s claim is too strong.
Reasoned answer: First, the source is a preprint and has not yet completed peer review. Second, the experiment tested a small number of one plant type under specific conditions, so the result does not prove the same effect for all plants or all lighting conditions.
Explained Practice
Practice A: A preprint and later journal article have different sample sizes. Which should you cite? Use the version relevant to the claim and explain the publication stage. If the later article supersedes the early analysis, do not pretend the versions are identical.
Practice B: A preprint server labels a paper “Version 3”. What should you ask? What changed from earlier versions and whether any cited headline refers to an outdated version.
Practice C: A peer-reviewed paper is later corrected. Does correction prove the whole study is worthless? No. Determine what was corrected and whether the central evidence remains supported.

Parent and Tutor Teaching Guide
Use three cards: PREPRINT, PEER-REVIEWED ARTICLE and RETRACTED ARTICLE. Ask the learner to arrange them from “false” to “true”. The correct response is that this is the wrong scale. These labels describe publication or review states, not direct truth scores.
Then give a fictional claim and ask five questions: What was measured? What changed? What alternative remains? What stage is the paper in? What later evidence would strengthen or weaken it? Reduce the prompts over time until the learner independently checks both evidence quality and publication stage.

The 2026 PSLE Science assessment objectives require learners to interpret and analyse information, evaluate observations, information and methods, and communicate explanations and reasoning. Preprints are a natural real-world transfer object for those habits because the scientific evidence is visible while the review process is still evolving.

Science does not become reliable because a label says “published”, and it does not become useless because a label says “preprint”.
The stronger habit is to keep two questions alive at once: What does the evidence show, and what stage of checking has that evidence reached?
