2. Why a Good Diagnosis Can Become Dangerous
A good diagnosis changes what the tutor notices.
If the tutor believes Alicia has a method-selection problem, every hesitation before a Mathematics question starts to look like failed method selection.

4. Research Foundation: Diagnostic Argumentation Needs More Than Justification
A 2022 study by Bauer and colleagues, “Teachers’ diagnostic argumentation in simulated cases”, examined preservice teachers reasoning through simulated classroom cases. The researchers distinguished among justification, disconfirmation and transparency in diagnostic argumentation.
Disconfirmation appeared much less often than simple justification. The study does not establish a tutoring protocol and does not show that a specific disconfirmation routine improves student outcomes. Its relevance here is narrower: professional diagnostic reasoning can be evaluated not only by whether a conclusion is supported, but also by whether reasonable competing explanations are actively tested.
5. Not Every Diagnosis Needs an Adversarial Trial
A learner miscopies one sign. The tutor asks for a fresh attempt and the issue disappears.
Do not build a diagnostic hearing.
The need for disconfirmation rises with the consequence of being wrong.

6. Start With a Diagnosis That Can Lose
“She is weak in English” cannot lose cleanly because almost any English difficulty can be absorbed into it.
Prefer:
On inference questions, Beatrice can locate relevant sentences but often selects evidence that is too broad to support the exact claim.
Now a competing explanation can be named:
Perhaps the larger problem is not evidence precision but uncertainty about the vocabulary in the question stem.
The two explanations can make different predictions.
7. Choose the Strongest Plausible Alternative
A weak alternative is easy to defeat and teaches nothing.
If the tutor believes the problem is method selection, an unserious alternative such as “perhaps the learner forgot how to hold a pencil” is useless.
Better alternatives sit near the same visible failure:
- method selection versus question-language interpretation;
- retrieval weakness versus incomplete understanding;
- low fluency versus unstable procedure;
- evidence selection versus vocabulary uncertainty;
- poor planning versus unrealistic workload;
- avoidance versus access barrier;

- change representation while holding difficulty roughly steady;

This is an illustrative composite, not a real customer record.
Beatrice gives weak inference answers. The tutor’s first explanation is vocabulary: she does not understand enough of the passage.
That explanation fits some evidence. Beatrice pauses at unfamiliar words and sometimes chooses broad paraphrases.
The strongest alternative is evidence selection. Perhaps she understands the passage but cannot distinguish the line that directly supports the question from nearby information that is merely related.
The tutor creates two short fresh passages using accessible vocabulary. Beatrice can explain the passages accurately but still chooses diffuse evidence.
The vocabulary diagnosis weakens.
It is not disproved forever. It is no longer the strongest explanation for this particular failure.
The learning route changes from general vocabulary repair to evidence discrimination.
11. Composite Case: Denise and the Timing Diagnosis
Denise loses marks late in an Additional Mathematics paper. The tutor diagnoses slow working.
The competing explanation is more specific: accuracy degrades when several algebraic transformations are chained, and the time loss is a consequence of repeated correction rather than raw speed.
The tutor compares two representative sections. One has moderate time pressure and shorter transformation chains. The other is untimed but contains the same long chains.
Errors cluster in the long chains even without the clock.
The broad “timing” diagnosis weakens.
The tutor repairs transformation reliability first, then reintroduces timing.
12. Composite Case: Emily and the Motivation Diagnosis
Emily repeatedly fails to complete a study plan. The easy interpretation is low motivation.
The strongest alternative is plan overload.
The tutor does not begin with a motivational speech. They reduce the weekly plan while preserving the learner’s stated priorities.
Completion improves sharply under the smaller plan.
That does not prove motivation was irrelevant. It shows that the previous evidence was compatible with a capacity explanation that required a different intervention.

Two explanations may both predict poor performance on the current task.

Making a task harder can produce more failure without making diagnosis clearer.

The competing explanation is that the core prerequisite is less stable than expected.

Parents often ask for a noun.

A responsible answer can still be clear:

Do not remove legitimate access support merely to “test the diagnosis”.
If enlarged text, text-to-speech, accessible notation or another accommodation is necessary for fair access, preserve it unless the access condition itself is the educational question and changing it is appropriate and safe.

An AI tool can generate alternative explanations quickly.
That can be useful for tutor reflection.

30. Common Failure: The Alternative Is a Strawman
If the alternative is implausible, defeating it creates false confidence.
Choose the explanation that a thoughtful competent tutor might genuinely consider from the same evidence.
31. Common Failure: The Test Teaches the Answer
The tutor says, “Maybe it is the wording. I will simplify it for you: this question is asking you to divide.”
The operation has now been supplied.
The task no longer distinguishes language interpretation from method selection.

A tutor can become more confident after a diagnosis survives a strong alternative.
That confidence should remain local.
“The evidence-selection explanation is stronger for these inference questions under these conditions” is better than “Beatrice has an evidence-selection problem in English.”

Weakening one explanation does not automatically prove another.

Research on teacher diagnostic competence, argumentation and judgement supports the importance of evidence-based reasoning and the challenge of considering alternatives. It does not validate a universal tutoring “Disconfirmation Check” protocol.
The simulated-case study cited above involved preservice teachers and educational cases, not Singapore three-student tuition. Its constructs are useful for professional reasoning, but the transfer here is a reasoned application rather than a direct efficacy claim.
The safest conclusion is therefore modest: consequential learner diagnoses should remain correctable, and tutors benefit from specifying what evidence would weaken the explanation currently controlling the route.
44. When to Stop Disconfirming
Stop when the evidence is strong enough for the next decision, not when every imaginable alternative is impossible.
- The current explanation predicts the observed pattern across more than one relevant condition.
- The strongest practical alternative has been given a fair chance and has weakened.
- The next intervention is proportionate and reversible.
- The learner is not being burdened by unnecessary testing.
- A clear review condition remains in place if new evidence appears.
Professional judgement lives under uncertainty. Robust enough is often the correct standard.
45. Final Principle
A diagnosis becomes dangerous when it can explain every result.
If the learner succeeds, the diagnosis was right.
If the learner fails, the diagnosis was even more right.
If the intervention fails, the learner needs more of it.
That is not a correctable learning system.
A strong tutor does not merely ask whether the evidence fits the diagnosis. The tutor asks what credible evidence would make the diagnosis lose, creates a fair opportunity for that evidence to appear, and changes the learning route when the learner’s receipts demand it.
