The learner is improving.

Then the tutor changes.

Perhaps the regular tutor is ill for two weeks.

Perhaps the learner moves from one tutor class to another because the dominant job has changed.

Perhaps a subject specialist takes over before an examination.

Perhaps a family changes timetable and another tutor now runs the same small-group slot.

Perhaps the learner has outgrown the original arrangement and needs a new person with a different function.

The new tutor asks a perfectly reasonable question:

So, what are we working on?

And suddenly a system that took six weeks to understand is compressed into:

She is weak in algebra.

That sentence can destroy a surprising amount of educational continuity.

Alicia is not simply “weak in algebra”. She can execute familiar methods accurately, but mixed questions still expose method-selection hesitation. One sign-control fragility has been repaired and moved into maintenance. Timing has not yet been added.

Beatrice is not simply “weak in comprehension”. She usually locates the right evidence. Her current bottleneck is answer scope: she over-expands beyond what the question asks. Generic comprehension drilling has already been deliberately reduced.

Denise is not simply “slow in Additional Mathematics”. Her untimed knowledge is stable. The current job is whole-paper performance: pacing, skip-and-return decisions and preserving accuracy under time.

Faith is not simply “dependent”. She now begins familiar tasks independently and uses one light task-restatement cue only when the surface is unfamiliar. The cue is being faded, not installed.

If the new tutor does not receive those distinctions, the learner can be reset without anybody intending to reset them.

A Continuity Packet is the smallest portable record that lets another tutor inherit the learner’s current state, active learning claim, dominant tutoring job, support boundary, route in progress, recent evidence and next discriminating move without restarting diagnosis or blindly copying the previous tutor’s style.

The previous volume, The Tutor Handbook Vol No.0060 | The Decommission, showed how an old route leaves ordinary operation after its function has transferred and useful recovery knowledge has been preserved.

This volume opens a new continuity problem:

What must survive when the human tutor changes so the learner’s learning route continues, while still giving the new tutor enough freedom to think independently?

Quick Read

  • The Continuity Packet is for tutor-to-tutor transfer. It is not the same as the lesson-to-learner Handover in Volume 0016.
  • The packet should preserve the current learner state, not a permanent label.
  • It should name the dominant tutor function now: Homework Helper, Explainer, Drill Builder, Diagnostic Tutor, Route Designer, Performance Coach or Learning Architect.

  • Continuity matters most at boundaries: tutor absence, tutor change, subject-specialist handoff, exam-season coaching, transition between tutor classes and return after a break.
  • Learning, studying, training, education and improvement each need different handoff fields.
  • Repair, Alignment and Frontier tuition require different continuity warnings.
  • Three-student tutorials need individual learner packets even when the class continues together.
  • One-to-one tutoring needs stronger continuity records because much of the route can live invisibly inside one tutor’s memory.
  • A packet should be short enough to read before the lesson and rich enough to prevent a false reset.
  • The packet expires. The receiving tutor must update it from new evidence rather than treating it as inherited truth.
  • The final test is simple: can another competent tutor continue intelligently without either restarting everything or blindly reproducing the previous tutor?

1. What This Volume Owns

This volume owns the practical transfer of a learner’s current tutoring route from one human tutor to another.

The general continuity owner already exists in eduKateSG’s ILT Tutor Guide v1.0. That guide defines the tutor as a continuity node: read the current learner state, dominant breach, visible invariant, repair route, transfer status and load condition, then continue rather than fragment the learner with a second unrelated system.

This Tutor Handbook volume is narrower.

What does one tutor need to hand another tutor so the learner does not pay for the adult transition by being re-diagnosed, re-explained and re-routed from zero?

2. What This Volume Does Not Own

Volume 0016 | The Handover owns the end of a lesson: what the learner carries into independent work, school or the next session.

Volume 0008 | Tutor–Student Fit owns whether the tutoring function, tutor, tutorial structure and learner condition still fit.

The Scope Boundary owns when a question should leave ordinary tuition rather than move to another tutor.

The Continuity Packet begins after a tutor-to-tutor handoff is genuinely appropriate and asks what state must cross the boundary.

3. Why Tutor Changes Reset Learners So Easily

A competent tutor carries a large amount of tacit information.

Which hesitation usually means confusion?

Which hesitation usually means the learner is about to solve it?

Which error has been repaired already?

Which error deserves attention only if it returns twice?

Which prompt is now too much help?

Which method is school using?

Which apparently weak topic is actually a performance problem rather than a knowledge problem?

When the tutor changes, that tacit model can vanish.

The learner then spends the first new lesson proving things the old tutor already knew.

Some re-verification is healthy.

A full reset is waste.

4. Continuity Is Not Sameness

The new tutor does not need to sound like the old tutor.

They do not need identical explanations, worksheets, examples or mannerisms.

Continuity means the learner’s state remains visible while professional judgement remains free.

Transfer the learner model and route logic, not the previous tutor’s personality.

5. The Packet Must Be a Snapshot, Not a Biography

A continuity packet should not contain everything known about the learner.

It should contain what the next tutor needs to make the next useful decision.

Old school stories, personality impressions and every historical mark can drown the current state.

The packet should answer:

  • What can the learner now do?
  • Where does performance still break?
  • What is the current best explanation?
  • Which tutor function is dominant now?
  • What route is currently active?
  • What support is present?
  • What support is being faded?
  • What has already been tried?
  • What evidence should return next?

6. Start With the Current State

Weak packet:

Weak in fractions. Needs practice.

Stronger packet:

Equivalent-fraction generation is accurate. Comparison is stable when denominators match. Changed representations still produce uncertainty, especially when the learner must choose between visual and symbolic routes.

The second description gives the receiving tutor a starting position rather than a chapter label.

7. State the Current Learning Claim

The packet should preserve the strongest claim the evidence currently supports.

For example:

Denise has stable calculus knowledge under untimed conditions. Whole-paper completion remains unreliable under representative time pressure.

That sentence prevents the receiving tutor from reteaching the whole calculus sequence merely because the last examination score was disappointing.

The claim should remain bounded by its conditions.

8. State the Evidence Conditions

A claim without its conditions can become misleading during transfer.

Was the task:

  • fresh or familiar?
  • timed or untimed?
  • mixed or blocked?
  • with notes or without?
  • after modelling or after delay?
  • prompted or independent?
  • marked to school standard?

The packet does not need every detail.

It needs the conditions that materially change the interpretation.

9. Name the Dominant Tutor Function

The receiving tutor should know what job currently dominates.

  • Class 0 · Homework Helper: task flow and learning routines.
  • Class 1 · Explainer: conceptual clarity.
  • Class 2 · Drill Builder: fluency and reliability.
  • Class 3 · Diagnostic Tutor: cause separation and first weak link.
  • Class 4 · Route Designer: sequence and priority.
  • Class 5 · Performance Coach: reliable output under pressure.
  • Class 6 · Learning Architect: integration across several interacting systems.

The canonical owner remains the Tutor Classification Model by eduKateSG.

The packet does not label the learner “Class 5”.

It says the current tutoring job is predominantly Class 5.

10. Name the Current Tuition Mode

eduKate’s three broad tuition modes are Repair, Alignment and Frontier.

The receiving tutor should know which mode is carrying the present learning budget.

Repair means a high-leverage weakness is being rebuilt.

Alignment means the learner is being kept coherent with current school demands.

Frontier means the learner has enough stability to extend beyond immediate requirements.

A tutor can inherit the same topic and make a completely wrong decision if the mode is lost.

11. Preserve the First Weak Link

If diagnosis has already separated the cause, the packet should preserve that result.

“Algebra errors” is not enough.

“Sign-control instability begins when two transformations occur in one line; method selection and concept knowledge are currently intact” is much more useful.

The receiving tutor may still challenge the diagnosis.

They should not be forced to rediscover it accidentally.

12. Preserve the Current Route

What is the learner doing now?

  • repairing signed-number control;
  • moving from blocked to mixed practice;
  • reducing first-step prompts;
  • building delayed retrieval;
  • adding moderate timing;
  • testing answer-scope control on unseen passages;
  • maintaining one repaired skill while school moves forward.

The packet should make the route clear enough that the receiving tutor knows whether their first lesson should continue, verify, narrow or re-diagnose.

13. Separate Active Repair From Maintenance

This distinction prevents wasted tutoring time.

An old weak link may still appear in the learner history but no longer deserve full intervention.

The packet can say:

  • Active repair: answer-scope control on evidence questions.
  • Maintenance: pronoun-reference routine; one short check weekly.
  • Watchlist: inference under highly compressed wording.
  • Retired: earlier literal-detail weakness; no special monitoring now.

Without those states, the new tutor can resurrect old problems simply because they remain visible in notes.

14. Preserve the Smallest Useful Prompt

The receiving tutor should know what the learner can do before help and what minimum support changes the state.

For Faith:

Do not give the first method. If she stalls on an unfamiliar task, ask only: “What is the task asking?” She usually begins after restating the task.

This prevents the new tutor from either over-helping or removing useful support too abruptly.

15. Mark Support That Is Being Faded

A support can look necessary when it is actually leaving.

The continuity packet should mark direction:

Current support: one task-restatement cue. Direction: fade. Do not add a method cue unless fresh evidence changes the diagnosis.

Direction matters because otherwise a receiving tutor may strengthen the very scaffold the previous tutor was successfully removing.

16. Preserve What Has Already Failed

A good packet contains one short “do not restart blindly” field.

Examples:

  • Full seven-step checking checklist increased completion time too much.
  • Generic comprehension volume did not change answer-scope errors.
  • Immediate full-paper timing increased sign errors beyond baseline.
  • Parent-written weekly schedules improved compliance but reduced learner replanning.

The receiving tutor may revisit the route for a new reason.

They should know it has history.

17. Preserve the Latest Decision Record

If the route recently changed, the packet should carry the reason.

For example:

Moved Denise from untimed mixed sections to moderate timed sections because method selection and algebraic accuracy were stable; current target is completion speed without crossing the sign-error floor.

That one sentence can prevent a new tutor from treating the timing work as arbitrary.

18. Preserve the Next Discriminating Move

The packet should not end with “continue practising”.

It should identify the next useful uncertainty.

Next test: one unseen mixed set without topic labels. If route selection holds while tutor attention is elsewhere, widen to a longer mixed section.

The receiving tutor now inherits a question, not a script.

19. One Packet, Three Time Horizons

A strong handoff distinguishes:

  • Now: what the next lesson should read or test.
  • Soon: what the current route is trying to stabilise over the next few sessions.
  • Later: what downstream condition the learner is preparing to face.

Without those horizons, the new tutor may optimise today’s worksheet and damage the longer route.

20. Learning Handoff

Learning concerns understanding, retrieval, representation and reasoning.

The continuity packet should state:

  • which concepts are genuinely understood;
  • which remain recognition-heavy;
  • what retrieval survives delay;
  • which representation unlocks the idea;
  • which misconception has been ruled out;
  • what changed condition still needs testing.

21. Studying Handoff

Studying concerns planning, allocation, resources, review and self-management.

The packet should state:

  • who currently chooses priorities;
  • how the learner records unfinished work;
  • what retrieval rhythm exists;
  • where parent involvement begins and ends;
  • what system survives a busy week;
  • what part is still adult-dependent.

22. Training Handoff

Training concerns reliability through repetition, spacing, variation and pressure.

The packet should state:

  • what is being trained;
  • what dose currently works;
  • whether practice is blocked or mixed;
  • what speed or accuracy floor matters;
  • what variation has already been survived;
  • what cost signal is being watched.

23. Education Handoff

Education places the learner inside school stages, current curriculum, formal assessments and institutional conditions.

The packet should state:

  • current school chapter or assessment demand;
  • recent marked evidence;
  • important school conventions or notation;
  • upcoming transition;
  • what tuition is aligning with rather than replacing;
  • what institutional decision remains outside tuition authority.

24. Improvement Handoff

Improvement is the learner’s growing ability to observe, diagnose, prioritise, repair, practise, test and review.

The packet should state which parts of the improvement loop the learner now runs themselves.

Does the learner notice recurrence?

Can they choose a practice task?

Can they explain why a method failed?

Can they bring a precise question to tuition?

The receiving tutor should avoid taking those controls back merely because a new adult has entered the room.

25. Class 0 · Homework Helper Continuity

A Class 0 handoff should preserve task ownership.

The receiving tutor needs to know what the learner can already locate, begin, track and submit without adult management.

Do not reintroduce full supervision merely because the new tutor has not seen the learner operate yet.

Verify first.

26. Class 1 · Explainer Continuity

The new tutor should know which representation already works.

Repeating a completely different explanation can create unnecessary translation cost.

Class 1 handoff rule:

Continue from the last representation the learner can reconstruct; change it only when evidence says it no longer carries meaning.

27. Class 2 · Drill Builder Continuity

The receiving tutor needs the training state.

How accurate?

How fast?

Under what spacing?

Under what mix?

With what cue dependence?

Without that state, the new tutor may assign volume where the learner actually needs variation—or variation where execution is not yet stable.

28. Class 3 · Diagnostic Tutor Continuity

Diagnostic handoffs are especially fragile.

The packet should preserve:

  • the observed failure;
  • the competing explanations considered;
  • the probe that separated them;
  • the current best explanation;
  • what remains uncertain.

The receiving tutor should inherit the differential, not just the winning hypothesis.

29. Class 4 · Route Designer Continuity

Route design is about sequence and trade-off.

The packet should state what is deliberately being done later.

Example:

Current priority is algebraic equivalence because it controls three downstream topics. Geometry extension is intentionally deferred until this repair exits full dose.

Without that note, the new tutor may interpret the deferred work as neglect rather than sequencing.

30. Class 5 · Performance Coach Continuity

Performance coaching requires the conditions of performance.

The packet should state:

  • where time is currently lost;
  • which sections remain stable;
  • what skip-and-return rule is being trained;
  • what accuracy floor must not be crossed;
  • what paper length has been tolerated;
  • what recovery routine the learner already knows.

The new tutor should not replace a functioning performance routine merely because they prefer another one.

31. Class 6 · Learning Architect Continuity

Class 6 handoffs are the most dangerous because many systems interact.

The packet should identify:

  • the controlling constraint;
  • the current-school lane;
  • the repair lane;
  • the return or maintenance lane;
  • any active performance lane;
  • parent boundaries;
  • learner-owned controls;
  • what must not be widened yet.

A Class 6 packet should simplify the architecture for the receiver.

If it requires thirty pages to understand, the architecture may already be too complicated.

32. Repair Mode Continuity

In Repair Mode, continuity protects the weak-link chain.

The receiving tutor needs to know:

  • what is being repaired;
  • why it was chosen;
  • what downstream work it controls;
  • what support changes the state;
  • what evidence will release it from full repair.

The worst handoff failure is to abandon a high-leverage repair because the new tutor chases the latest worksheet.

33. Alignment Mode Continuity

Alignment Mode continuity protects the relationship between tuition and current school learning.

The new tutor should know what the learner must remain operational in this week and which foundation issue is being managed without allowing school pace to hide it.

34. Frontier Mode Continuity

Frontier work can look attractive to a new tutor.

Harder questions create visible challenge.

The packet should say why the learner entered Frontier Mode and what core conditions must remain protected.

Extension should not expand merely because a new tutor wants to demonstrate sophistication.

35. Permanent Tutor Change

A permanent change needs the full packet because the receiver becomes the new owner of the learning route.

The sending tutor should provide enough evidence for continuity and enough uncertainty for independent judgement.

The receiving tutor should verify the learner’s present state early, then update rather than merely inherit.

36. Temporary Tutor Cover

Temporary cover needs a smaller packet.

Its job is usually continuity, not redesign.

The covering tutor should know:

  • current target;
  • support ceiling;
  • current practice condition;
  • what not to change casually;
  • what evidence to return to the regular tutor.

Temporary cover should not become a surprise full reclassification unless new evidence is strong enough to justify it.

37. Tutor-Class Handoff

Sometimes the human tutor stays the same but the tutoring job changes.

That is also a handoff.

Class 1 Explainer hands to Class 2 Drill Builder.

Class 3 Diagnostic Tutor hands to Class 4 Route Designer.

Class 4 Route Designer hands to Class 5 Performance Coach near the examination.

The packet helps the tutor themselves avoid carrying an old function after the learner’s state has changed.

38. Subject-Specialist Handoff

A learner can move from broad support to a specialist without starting again.

The specialist needs the subject-specific state, but they also need enough wider context to avoid solving the wrong problem.

An Additional Mathematics specialist should know whether the bottleneck is algebraic manipulation, concept structure, method selection, timing or school sequence.

“Needs A-Math help” is not a continuity packet.

39. Examination-Season Handoff

A learner may temporarily receive more Class 5 Performance Coach work close to an examination.

The handoff must protect the learning base.

The performance tutor should know which content is stable, which fragility remains active and which routines must not be destabilised days before the paper.

40. Return After a Long Break

A learner returns after travel, illness, holidays or a tuition pause.

The packet is a starting hypothesis, not proof that the old state still exists.

Use one or two discriminating checks to see what survived.

Continuity after a long break requires re-verification because time changes state.

41. The Receiving Tutor Must Not Trust the Packet Blindly

The sending tutor can be wrong.

The learner can have changed.

The school can have changed the task.

The packet can already be stale.

A good receiving tutor treats the packet as high-value prior evidence.

Not scripture.

Inherit the model. Verify the state. Update from reality.

42. Verify Before You Contradict

A new tutor may prefer a different explanation or practice method.

Before replacing the existing route, test whether the learner actually fails under it.

If the learner reconstructs the concept, retrieves it after delay and transfers it, a new explanation may add noise rather than value.

43. Verify Before You Widen

New tutors often want to see what the learner can really do.

That instinct is useful.

Widening too quickly can destroy interpretability.

If the packet says blocked execution is stable but mixed selection is fragile, do not begin with a full unfamiliar paper and conclude that the whole topic is weak.

Test the boundary the packet identifies.

44. Verify Before You Restore Old Support

A new tutor may see hesitation and help immediately.

But the old tutor may have deliberately created that hesitation by fading support.

Ask whether the learner can recover.

Do not automatically rebuild a scaffold that was leaving successfully.

45. The Learner Should Hear the Handoff

A learner should not feel as though adults exchange secret files about them.

Age-appropriate transparency helps:

Your new tutor will know what we have already repaired, what you can now do independently and what still needs testing. They may see things differently, and that is okay. You should also tell them what you think is working and where you still need help.

The learner is part of the handoff, not cargo inside it.

46. The Parent Should Know What Is Being Preserved

Parents often fear tutor change because continuity feels like accumulated value.

That concern is reasonable.

A clear parent-facing summary can say:

We are transferring the current learner state, the active weak link, the support level, recent evidence and the next review question. The new tutor will not be required to copy the same teaching style, but they will not need to rebuild the route from zero.

47. Privacy Belongs Inside Continuity

A useful handoff does not justify unnecessary disclosure.

Transfer the minimum legitimate information needed for the educational job.

A tutor does not need unrelated family history merely because it exists.

The Human Support Boundaries article provides a wider framework: different helpers carry different authority and should not annex information or responsibility merely because they are involved.

48. Three-Student Tutorials Need Three Packets

The class can continue as one group while the learners remain in different states.

Alicia may be in mixed-selection training.

Beatrice may be reducing answer-scope support.

Ciara may be moving a Science explanation from model language to causal reconstruction.

A group handoff note that says “Class working on revision” destroys the main advantage of three-student tuition: visibility of individual learner state.

49. Shared Lesson, Individual Continuity

A receiving tutor can teach one shared concept while preserving three different support conditions.

The packet tells the tutor who should receive the first hint, who should not, who needs variation and who needs stability.

Continuity does not require three separate lessons.

It requires three accurate learner models inside one lesson.

50. One-to-One Tutoring Needs Stronger Packets

One-to-one tutoring often stores continuity inside the tutor’s memory.

The tutor knows every prompt, parent conversation and historical weak link.

That can create excellent continuity while the same tutor remains.

It creates a single point of failure when the tutor leaves.

The more personalised the invisible model, the more important a compact explicit packet becomes.

51. Alicia · Mathematics: Preserve the Method-Selection Boundary

Alicia moves temporarily to another tutor.

Weak handoff:

Alicia needs algebra practice.

Continuity packet:

Algebraic execution is currently accurate on blocked sets. Earlier sign-control weakness has moved to maintenance. Active target is method selection in mixed algebra without topic labels. Do not return to long blocked drills unless execution itself destabilises. Next test: short unseen mixed set completed while tutor attention is elsewhere.

The second note saves the learner from starting the wrong phase again.

52. Beatrice · English: Preserve the Answer-Scope Diagnosis

Weak handoff:

Beatrice loses comprehension marks.

Continuity packet:

Evidence location is mostly accurate. Current loss comes from answer scope: Beatrice adds unsupported or unnecessary material after identifying the correct evidence. Current intervention is minimum-complete-answer training on unseen passages. Avoid generic inference volume unless fresh evidence shows source selection weakening.

53. Ciara · Science: Preserve the Mechanism–Language Boundary

Ciara’s scientific language is strong.

Her current training is to reconstruct mechanism before reaching for stored wording.

The receiving tutor needs that distinction or may celebrate fluent model-answer recall and accidentally strengthen the old weakness.

Language support can remain available after causal reconstruction. Do not begin changed-condition questions with the model answer.

54. Denise · Additional Mathematics: Preserve the Performance Diagnosis

Denise’s packet should say:

Untimed knowledge is stable across recent mixed sections. Current Class 5 job is whole-paper timing and recovery. Moderate timed sections are stable; full-paper timing is being rebuilt. Sign-error floor must remain close to untimed baseline. Do not reteach complete topic sequences unless a fresh knowledge failure appears.

That packet protects months of diagnosis from one low timed score.

55. Emily · Studying: Preserve Learner Ownership

Emily’s continuity problem is not a subject.

It is control.

Emily now runs a rolling three-day plan and can reallocate after ordinary school disruption. Parent no longer writes the schedule. Tutor may challenge priority choices, but should not rebuild the week unless evidence shows route failure. Current target is protecting one retrieval return inside busy weeks.

A new tutor who “helps” by making a better plan could undo the actual improvement.

56. Faith · Independence: Preserve the Fade Direction

Faith’s packet should say:

Familiar tasks begin independently. On unfamiliar surfaces, one task-restatement cue is sometimes needed. This cue is being faded. Do not provide the first method automatically. If the task itself is ambiguous, clarify the condition immediately; otherwise allow one serious attempt before help.

The packet protects the direction of independence.

57. The Eight-Line Continuity Packet

  1. Current state: what can the learner do now?
  2. Active claim: what does current evidence support?
  3. Dominant tutor function: which Class 0–6 job is primary?
  4. Active route: what is being taught, repaired, trained or faded?
  5. Support boundary: what is the smallest useful support and what direction is it moving?
  6. History that matters: what route has already failed, completed or moved to maintenance?
  7. Next discriminating move: what should the receiver test next?
  8. Review boundary: what result would continue, widen, narrow or re-diagnose the route?

Eight lines can preserve a surprising amount of learning intelligence.

58. The Thirty-Second Version

Can do. Still breaks. Current job. Current support. What already failed. Next test.

Example:

Alicia can execute algebra accurately. Still breaks at method selection when topics are mixed. Current job is Class 2/4 mixed-selection training, not explanation. Support is no topic label and no method cue. Long blocked drill already produced flat returns. Next test is one fresh mixed set after delay.

60. Version the Packet

A continuity packet should have a date.

The learner changes.

The route changes.

The packet should therefore be treated as a snapshot.

If the receiving tutor is still reading the same handoff note six weeks later, the packet is no longer doing its job.

61. Expire Old Claims

“Needs one prompt” may be true this week and false next month.

“Weak in mixed questions” may disappear after practice.

“Timed work not yet introduced” becomes wrong the moment performance training begins.

Continuity requires memory with expiry, not memory without revision.

After one or two lessons, the receiving tutor should review the packet.

A learner should not lose educational progress because adults changed seats.
