The watchpoint has been retired.
The old weakness no longer deserves special monitoring. The learner is functioning. The tutor has stopped inserting deliberate probes. Current lessons have returned to current learning.
But one question remains.
What should the tutor remember?
Remember too little, and a future tutor may waste weeks rediscovering a pattern that was already understood. Remember too much, and the learner can spend years walking into lessons preceded by an outdated version of themselves.
This is the job of The Archive.
The Archive is not a warehouse of everything that ever happened to the learner. It is not a permanent dossier. It is not a list of every low mark, every careless slip, every parent concern, every abandoned hypothesis or every worksheet completed since Primary 1.
It is a deliberately compressed learning history that preserves only what may still improve a future educational decision.
The previous chapter, Volume 0033, The Retirement, owned the decision to remove a known fragility from special monitoring. This chapter owns what happens to the useful history after that decision.

The tutor classification remains the Class 0–6 ladder established by the Tutor Classification Model by eduKateSG. The Archive matters differently at each class because what is worth remembering depends on the job the tutor is trying to do.

- An archive preserves useful history; it does not keep every old concern active.
- Current evidence should always outrank old descriptions when the two conflict.
- Archive mechanisms, conditions and evidence. Avoid identity labels.
- A useful archive item usually needs a date, context, evidence source, support level, intervention, outcome and current status.

- Class 3 tutors preserve diagnostic mechanisms and uncertainty; Class 4 tutors preserve route implications; Class 5 tutors preserve performance boundaries; Class 6 tutors preserve only the system-level history that still improves future decisions.
- The archive should make the next tutor faster without making the next tutor less curious.
1. The Archive Begins Where Special Monitoring Ends
A watchlist item is active. The tutor expects to look for it.
An archived item is inactive. The tutor does not schedule lesson time around it. The history is available only if a future decision makes it relevant.
Archive means remembered without being continuously acted upon.
That distinction protects both continuity and freedom.
2. A Learner Needs Memory, but Not a Permanent Verdict
Education without memory wastes information. Every tutor starts from zero. Previously successful repairs are rediscovered. Previously failed interventions are repeated. Known transition risks are encountered as surprises.
Education with too much memory creates a different failure. The learner arrives with a biography of weaknesses so heavy that fresh evidence struggles to compete.
The archive therefore has two responsibilities:
- preserve what can reduce future rediscovery cost;
- prevent historical claims from becoming automatic current truths.
3. Preserve Mechanisms, Not Insults
“Careless” is a poor archive entry.
It does not say what happened, under which condition, how often, what support changed it, or whether the pattern still exists.
A stronger note might say:
In long timed algebra sets during Term 2, 2026, sign errors increased in the final third when intermediate transformations were compressed mentally. Accuracy improved when one extra line of working was kept visible. The pattern remained stable across three later full papers and was retired from special monitoring in September 2026.
That note preserves a mechanism, condition, intervention and outcome. It does not turn a temporary pattern into a personality.
4. The Date Is Part of the Evidence
A statement without a date can quietly become timeless.
“Weak at fractions” written in Primary 4 can still sit in a record during Secondary 2. “Needs parent reminders to begin homework” can follow a learner long after they have become self-starting.
Dates force the reader to ask the right question:
Is this still true now?
5. Context Is Part of the Evidence
A learner may be slow on unfamiliar multi-step questions but fast on routine exercises. A writer may plan well untimed and abandon planning under examination pressure. A student may retrieve vocabulary in conversation but not while writing.
If the archive removes the condition, it changes the meaning.
“Poor planning” is not equivalent to “planning collapses only when a 50-minute composition begins after a demanding comprehension section.”
The second statement is much more useful because it tells a future tutor where to look—and where not to overgeneralise.
6. Source Is Part of the Evidence
A parent impression, a student self-report, a school comment, one marked paper and five independent observations do not carry identical evidential weight.
All can matter. The archive should distinguish them.
- Observed directly: tutor saw the behaviour under a known condition.
- Student reported: learner described a recurring difficulty or strategy.
- Parent reported: family observed a pattern outside tuition.
- School evidence: marked work, teacher feedback or assessment showed the pattern.
- Inferred: tutor formed a hypothesis from indirect signs.
- Confirmed later: repeated evidence strengthened the claim.
- Superseded: later evidence no longer supports treating the old description as current.
7. Support Level Is Part of the Evidence
A correct answer produced after four hints is not the same state as a correct answer produced independently.
One of the most damaging archive mistakes is to preserve outcome without preserving assistance.
Record whether the learner needed:
- a full explanation;
- a worked example;
- a first-step prompt;
- a discriminating question;
- a reminder to check;
- a visual scaffold;
- extra time;
- or no intervention.
This matters because future tutoring depends on knowing what the learner could carry alone.
8. The Archive Should Record What Changed
Weak archives are problem-heavy.
They remember every failure and compress every improvement into “better now”.
A strong archive records the transition:
- what failed;
- what the tutor thought might be causing it;
- what was changed;
- what the learner did differently;
- what survived delay;
- what transferred;
- what became independent;
- and why the issue eventually left active monitoring.
The archive should tell the story of capability becoming more reliable.
9. A Wrong Hypothesis Can Be Worth Preserving
Suppose a student repeatedly loses marks in comprehension.
The first hypothesis is vocabulary weakness.
The tutor teaches vocabulary, changes the texts and checks definitions. Performance barely moves.
A second hypothesis identifies answer scope: the student understands the passage but makes claims broader than the evidence supports. Training scope control changes performance quickly.
The failed vocabulary hypothesis may deserve one compressed archive line:
Vocabulary was tested as the primary explanation in May 2026; improving vocabulary access did not materially change the recurring mark loss. Later evidence supported inference-scope control as the stronger mechanism.
That one line can save a future tutor from confidently repeating the same wrong diagnosis.
10. Preserve Failed Interventions When They Change Future Choice
Not every failed worksheet deserves immortality.
But an intervention that clearly failed for a known reason may matter later.
For example:
- mass practice created short-term fluency but the skill disappeared after a week;
- model essays improved imitation but reduced independent idea generation;
- constant parent reminders completed homework but increased initiation dependence;
- speed drills increased completion rate while causing accuracy collapse;
- one explanation format repeatedly confused the learner while a different representation worked.
The archive does not preserve failure for embarrassment. It preserves information that can prevent future waste.
11. Preserve Successful Strategies Carefully
A strategy can be useful without deserving permanent status.
A checklist may help a Primary learner organise a Science explanation. A planning frame may help a writer stabilise composition structure. A colour-coded algebra routine may temporarily make transformations visible.
But if the learner later internalises the control, the archive should not insist on the old scaffold forever.
Preserve the principle the scaffold taught, not necessarily the scaffold itself.
12. The Minimum Sufficient History
The archive should answer a hard editorial question:
What is the smallest amount of history that would still help a competent future tutor make a better decision?
That question changes record keeping.
Instead of storing forty worksheets, the archive may store one summary plus two representative attempts.
Instead of retaining every weekly comment, it may preserve the first clear baseline, the turning-point intervention, one delayed transfer check and the retirement note.
Compression is not information loss when the removed information no longer changes interpretation.
13. Archive the First Useful Baseline
A useful baseline is not necessarily the first piece of work the tutor ever sees.
It is the first observation good enough to define the learner state under known conditions.
A strong baseline may say:
Can solve routine linear equations independently at high accuracy; loses control when brackets, negatives and transposition combine; error usually begins before the final arithmetic rather than during calculation.
That is more useful than “42% on algebra test”.
14. Archive the Turning Point
Many learning histories contain one moment where the route changes.
The tutor stops explaining and starts testing retrieval. The student stops correcting every answer immediately and begins reattempting after delay. The writing programme stops collecting model essays and begins analysing prompt choice. The Mathematics lesson stops drilling speed and rebuilds representation choice.
That turning point is worth preserving when it explains why later improvement became possible.
15. Archive the Proof of Change
Improvement deserves stronger memory than optimism.
Useful proof may include:
- delayed retrieval;
- changed-surface transfer;
- mixed-set selection;
- full-paper performance;
- reduced support demand;
- independent error correction;
- school evidence agreeing with tuition evidence;
- the learner applying the control without being reminded.
The archive should contain enough evidence to explain why the old label was retired.
16. Archive the Current Status, Not Merely the Old Problem
Every archived weakness should have a current-state sentence.
Examples:
- Retired: no longer requires special monitoring; ordinary curriculum will expose recurrence.
- Superseded: earlier explanation no longer fits later evidence.
- Resolved for present level: capability is stable under current demands but should be reconsidered at the next major transition.
- Strategy internalised: former scaffold can be removed; preserve principle only.
- Uncertain historical note: plausible but never sufficiently tested; do not treat as fact.
This prevents an archive reader from mistaking historical truth for present truth.
17. Confidence Should Be Visible
Tutors often write notes as if every observation carries equal certainty.
It does not.
A practical archive can use four confidence states:
- Observed: direct evidence supports the claim.
- Probable: several clues support the claim but competing explanations remain possible.
- Tentative: useful hypothesis requiring fresh evidence before action.
- Superseded: later evidence makes the earlier claim a poor guide to the current learner.
This small discipline makes historical records safer and more intellectually honest.
18. The Archive Must Allow the Learner to Become Different
A child can change faster than a record.
That is one of the central dangers of educational history.
The student who needed constant prompting at Primary 3 may become highly self-directed at Secondary 1. The learner who froze in oral presentation may later become the strongest speaker in the group. The child who struggled with fractions may eventually handle algebraic ratios fluently.
The archive should remember change more strongly than it remembers failure.
19. Current Evidence Gets First Right of Reply
When an archived note and current observation disagree, the tutor should not automatically trust the archive.
Instead ask:
- Is the old condition still present?
- Has the curriculum changed?
- Has the learner matured?
- Was the old evidence weak?
- Was the old note written under unusual stress?
- Has the learner internalised a strategy that removed the original mechanism?
- Are we seeing a superficially similar error with a different cause?
The archive is evidence. It is not authority.
20. Similar Symptoms Do Not Guarantee the Same Cause
A student once lost negative signs because transformations were compressed mentally.
Six months later a negative sign is lost again.
The archive makes the old mechanism available as a hypothesis. It does not prove recurrence.
The new error may come from rushing, copying, a different algebraic misunderstanding or one isolated slip.
A strong tutor uses history to ask a better question, not to skip the question.
21. Preserve the Boundary Where the Problem Used to Appear
If a historical weakness had a specific boundary, archive it.
- after a seven-day delay;
- inside mixed rather than topical work;
- late in long papers;
- after support was removed;
- when two similar methods competed;
- when representations changed;
- when workload rose;
- when the learner had to start independently.
Boundary information is often more reusable than the original score.
22. Preserve the Recovery Route
Sometimes the most valuable historical information is not what went wrong but how the learner successfully recovered.
For example:
- returning to a diagram restored conceptual control;
- speaking the relation aloud prevented method-selection errors;
- one delayed reattempt converted correction into retrieval;
- reducing the number of simultaneous editing targets stabilised writing;
- breaking a study restart into one ten-minute task restored initiation after disruption.
These are compact pieces of future leverage.
23. Preserve What the Learner Can Now Do Alone
Archival history should not end at “problem solved”.
State the independent capability.
Can now identify when a percentage question changes base, mark the reference quantity before calculating, and self-correct if two plausible bases appear.
That sentence tells the next tutor what not to reteach automatically.
24. Preserve Transition Warnings Selectively
Some historical issues deserve one future-facing note because a coming educational transition may recreate the old load.
A Primary learner who stabilised working memory by externalising steps may face denser symbolic manipulation in Secondary Mathematics. A Secondary writer who learned to plan under 45-minute conditions may meet a different timing structure later. A learner whose study initiation improved under a stable timetable may need a fresh check when JC workload changes dramatically.
The archive can say:
Resolved under current demands. Recheck only if the next transition materially increases the original load condition.
This is not permanent watch status. It is intelligent future context.
25. An Archive Item Needs a Reason to Exist
Every archived item should answer one sentence:
This history is being preserved because it could improve a future decision about ______.
If the blank cannot be filled, the item may not deserve archival privilege.
26. The Archive Card

Most archive cards should be short. Their usefulness comes from discrimination, not volume.
27. Archive Categories
A compact learning archive can usually classify history into a few useful types.
- Retired fragility: once important, now no longer active.
- Resolved prerequisite: a missing foundation rebuilt strongly enough for current progression.
- Useful strategy: a learner control that remains worth knowing.
- Failed intervention: a route that should not be repeated automatically.
- Superseded diagnosis: an old explanation replaced by stronger evidence.
- Transition note: history relevant only if a future load condition returns.
- Performance boundary: a condition under which capability used to become unreliable.
- Independent capability: something the learner can now do without support.
28. Do Not Archive Every Mark
Marks are observations, not always explanations.
A long list of scores can show movement, but it may not show why the movement happened.
Where a score genuinely matters, connect it to condition and mechanism:
68% → 74% → 73% across three comparable papers; improvement came mainly from fewer method-selection errors and successful recovery after difficult questions, not from easier questions or increased completion alone.
Now the score belongs to a usable learning story.
29. Do Not Archive Only Mistakes
A record made entirely of failures becomes structurally pessimistic.
Preserve capability evidence:
- what the learner learned quickly;
- what transferred strongly;
- what became self-correcting;
- which study routines became self-starting;
- which performance controls survived stress;
- which explanations the learner can now generate for others;
- what no longer needs tutor time.
The archive should be able to explain why the learner deserves more trust now than before.
30. Do Not Archive Personality Conclusions From Task Behaviour
“Lazy”, “careless”, “not motivated”, “weak”, “anxious”, “slow” and “not a Mathematics person” are dangerous compressions because they transform observed conditions into identity claims.
A tutor may need to describe behaviour. Describe it narrowly.
Instead of “lazy”, say:
Homework initiation was inconsistent on evenings with competing school deadlines; once started, sustained work was usually adequate.
Now the problem is actionable and revisable.
31. Do Not Archive a Scaffold as a Permanent Requirement
A child who once needed a planning template may later plan freely. A learner who needed verbal rehearsal before writing may later internalise the same sequence. A student who needed every algebra step boxed may later keep structure visible without the boxes.
The archive should state when a scaffold was useful and when it became unnecessary.
Otherwise temporary support can accidentally become a permanent expectation.
32. Do Not Archive Context-Free Preferences
“Visual learner” is rarely a useful archive conclusion.
A learner may benefit from diagrams for geometry, timelines for history and direct symbolic work for algebra. Preference and effectiveness can differ by task.
If a representation helped, record the specific relationship:
Tree diagrams helped the learner distinguish dependent branches when verbal descriptions overloaded tracking.
That is reusable. A broad learner-type label is not.
33. Preserve Contradictions
Learning data will not always agree.
A student may perform well in tuition and poorly in school. A learner may describe high confidence while repeatedly choosing the wrong method. A parent may report strong independent study while the student relies heavily on prompts in tuition.
Do not force all evidence into one neat conclusion.
Archive the contradiction when it changes interpretation:
Independent accuracy was high in untimed tuition sets but unstable in school papers. The gap narrowed only after training moved into timed mixed conditions.
That is more useful than choosing one setting as “the real student”.
34. Archive the Learner’s Own Explanation
Sometimes the learner notices the mechanism first.
“I know the method until two chapters are mixed.”
“I understand the passage, but I panic when I see five questions left.”
“I keep rereading because retrieval feels slower even though it works better.”
When a learner’s description becomes a reliable self-regulation tool, it deserves a place in the archive because it may help future support begin from learner awareness rather than external interpretation.
35. The Archive and Parent Communication
Parents benefit from history when it clarifies change.
A useful explanation sounds like this:
Earlier this year, the main difficulty appeared when several methods competed. We trained selection rather than doing more same-type practice. That issue is now stable enough that it is no longer on active watch. We are keeping one short historical note so that if a similar pattern returns during a harder transition, we can test the old mechanism quickly without assuming it is automatically the cause.
This preserves continuity without turning the child into a list of defects.
36. The Archive and a New Tutor
The archive should make a handover faster without making it prejudicial.
A strong handover gives the new tutor three things:
- the learner’s current capability;
- the small amount of historical evidence that could still matter;
- permission to overturn the old model if fresh observation disagrees.
The new tutor should not inherit conclusions as commandments.
37. The Archive and the Learner
Older learners can often benefit from knowing the compressed story themselves.
Not every internal note needs to become a student-facing report. But the learner should understand major changes in their own learning system:
- what used to be unreliable;
- what changed it;
- what they can now do independently;
- what condition could make the old risk relevant again;
- what first self-check they should use if that happens.
This turns history into self-knowledge rather than institutional memory alone.
38. The Archive Is Not a Privacy Policy
This chapter concerns pedagogical relevance: what learning history is educationally useful to preserve.
It does not define legal retention periods, consent requirements, data-access rights or organisational privacy procedures. Those questions depend on the applicable policy and law.
The pedagogical principle is still useful:
Do not collect or preserve irrelevant personal detail merely because storage is easy.
39. Class 0 · Homework Helper
The Homework Helper preserves routine history only when it changes future support.
Useful history might include:
- the learner previously needed adult initiation;
- one start cue became reliable;
- packing and submission failures disappeared after an external checklist;
- the checklist was later faded successfully.
The archive should not say “disorganised child”. It should preserve which routine once required support and whether the learner now owns it.
40. Class 1 · Explainer
The Explainer preserves conceptual misunderstandings that may reappear as prerequisites.
A good note identifies the exact relation that was confused, the representation that finally made it clear, and whether later transfer confirmed real understanding.
The archive should not encourage endless re-explanation. It should tell the future tutor whether explanation is still needed at all.
41. Class 2 · Drill Builder
The Drill Builder preserves fluency history when dose, spacing or interference mattered.
Useful notes include:
- massed practice created fast improvement but poor retention;
- short spaced retrieval produced slower but more durable access;
- fluency held until similar procedures were mixed;
- continued drilling stopped adding value once selection became the real bottleneck.
The archive helps future tutors know when repetition solved the right problem and when it did not.
42. Class 3 · Diagnostic Tutor
The Diagnostic Tutor has the heaviest archival responsibility because diagnostic claims can become sticky.
Class 3 should preserve:
- the observable signal;
- the tested mechanism;
- competing explanations considered;
- what evidence separated them;
- confidence level;
- what evidence later weakened or superseded the diagnosis.
A diagnostic note that cannot be overturned is not a diagnosis. It is a label.
43. Class 4 · Route Designer
The Route Designer preserves sequence history.
Which prerequisite had to be rebuilt first? Which apparently urgent topic was postponed because a deeper dependency mattered more? Which transition increased load? Which sequence finally allowed transfer?
This history can be extremely useful when a learner enters a new level and apparently “new” problems depend on the same architectural relationship.
44. Class 5 · Performance Coach
The Performance Coach preserves the conditions under which knowledge failed to become reliable output.
- timing;
- late-paper fatigue;
- switching between methods;
- oral pressure;
- task length;
- uncertainty after one difficult item;
- checking collapse near the end.
Performance history should remain bounded. “Bad under pressure” is too broad. “Accuracy dropped sharply in the final third of full papers until pacing and visible working were stabilised” is useful.
45. Class 6 · Learning Architect
The Learning Architect decides what deserves to remain in the whole learner model.
This means Class 6 must delete conceptually even when nothing is physically deleted.
An old note may still exist in history but lose operational privilege.
A mature learning system knows the difference between information that exists and information that should still influence decisions.
46. Learning Leaves One Kind of Archive
Learning history asks what capability changed.
- what was understood;
- what became retrievable;
- what misconception was replaced;
- what relation became visible;
- what transferred;
- what became self-correcting.
This archive is about the learner’s capability, not merely the activities performed.
47. Studying Leaves Another Kind of Archive
Studying history asks how the learner deliberately manages learning outside direct instruction.
- what triggers independent study;
- whether retrieval replaced passive rereading;
- how corrections are revisited;
- how priorities are chosen;
- what happens after a disrupted week;
- how help is requested.
A studying archive is valuable when it explains how the learner became more self-directed.
48. Training Leaves Another Kind of Archive
Training history asks what adaptation occurred under repeated, designed exposure.
- speed changed;
- accuracy changed;
- selection improved under mixed practice;
- timed planning became automatic enough to survive pressure;
- retrieval became more durable with spacing;
- recovery after difficult questions became faster.
The archive should preserve the adaptation and the condition, not every repetition that produced it.
49. Education Leaves Another Kind of Archive
Education history includes the environment around learning.
A curriculum transition, new examination format, school feedback pattern, class arrangement or subject demand may explain why a previously stable learner became unstable—or why a past fragility stopped mattering.
The archive should preserve environmental changes only when they improve interpretation of learning.
50. Improvement Leaves the System Story
Improvement history asks whether the overall system became better.
Not merely: did the mark rise?
But:
- did the learner need less support?
- did the capability travel further?
- did performance become more stable?
- did recovery become faster?
- did study become more self-directed?
- did the tutor need fewer controls?
- did the learner gain more educational options?
The improvement archive tells the story of the system becoming more capable.
51. Alicia: A Retrieval History
Alicia once understood concepts well in the week they were taught but lost access after long gaps.
An unhelpful archive would say, “Poor memory.”
A useful archive says the difficulty was delayed retrieval rather than initial understanding, that short spaced retrieval restored access, that transfer remained strong once the concept was retrieved, and that Alicia later learned to schedule her own low-dose revisits.
The note ends with current state:
Retired. Alicia now recognises low-use knowledge and initiates retrieval before major assessments without tutor prompting.
52. Beatrice: A Method-Selection History
Beatrice could execute several Mathematics methods accurately but once became unreliable when similar methods competed.
The archive should not preserve “weak at mixed questions”.
It should preserve the discriminating move that changed performance: identify the relationship before choosing the procedure. Mixed-set evidence later showed the control had become independent.
If Beatrice struggles with a future advanced topic, the old history becomes one hypothesis source, not proof that the same selection problem has returned.
53. Ciara: An Evidence-Scope History
Ciara once understood long passages but allowed her answers to outrun the evidence when time pressure rose.
The archive preserves the condition: long passage, later questions, reduced time, broad inference.
It also preserves the recovery control: shrink the claim until one exact piece of evidence can carry it.
Later full-paper evidence showed Ciara using that control without prompting. The note is retired but useful if a future examination format creates heavier reading load.
54. Denise: A Performance-Boundary History
Denise once maintained high accuracy for most of a paper and then deteriorated sharply near the end.
“Careless late in exams” is too vague.
The archive records that unfinished earlier items compressed the final checking window, visible working decreased, and sign and copying errors increased. Pacing changes and a protected checking block stabilised the final third across later papers.
The old boundary remains part of history. It no longer controls every lesson.
55. Emily: A Study-Initiation History
Emily’s study system once collapsed during high-workload weeks.
The archive should not say “procrastinator”.

Faith’s early low Science marks were initially attributed to weak content knowledge.
Direct concept checks were stronger than expected. The recurring losses appeared when Faith had to connect evidence to mechanism in open-ended answers.
The archive preserves the first hypothesis only because its failure matters:
Initial content-deficit hypothesis superseded. Concept retrieval was adequate; explanation structure and evidence-to-mechanism linking better explained the mark pattern.
That note protects Faith from being sent back through unnecessary content reteaching later.
57. Primary English Example
A Primary learner once produced compositions that began strongly and flattened into event lists.
The archive preserves the mechanism: planning captured events but not consequence. Training shifted from “what happens next?” to “what changes because this happened?”
Later timed work showed the learner independently building turning points and consequences. The old weakness becomes archived history rather than a permanent statement that the child “has weak ideas”.
58. Primary Mathematics Example
A learner once chose the wrong reference quantity in percentage problems.
The archive records the discriminating control: identify what the percentage is a percentage of before calculating.
Later mixed questions confirmed the learner could select the base independently. The future tutor does not need to reteach percentages from the beginning just because one new problem looks difficult.

A PSLE Science learner once copied observations accurately but attached them to the wrong causal claim.
The archive preserves the distinction between observation, inference and mechanism. It records that performance changed when the learner was required to name what the evidence directly showed before explaining why.
Once that sequence survives varied questions, the archive protects continuity without turning the learner into “weak at Science explanations”.

The archive records answer scope, not general comprehension weakness. It notes the student could understand the text but needed to calibrate claim size to evidence and task demand.

The archive records that execution was not the main problem. Classification and method selection were.

An Additional Mathematics learner once lost structure during long symbolic transformations.
The useful archive note is not “careless algebra”. It records that mental compression exceeded reliable working memory under dense transformations, and that keeping one additional intermediate line visible restored control without slowing the learner materially.
If later calculus errors appear, the tutor can test whether symbolic visibility is relevant instead of assuming it.
63. JC Example
A JC learner may have strong subject knowledge but once depend on tuition to decide what to revise.
The archive should preserve the transition from tutor-owned planning to learner-owned diagnosis: identifying weak areas, choosing retrieval, comparing evidence and arriving with specific questions.
Future support should begin from that new independence, not recreate the old dependency.
64. Vocabulary Example
A learner may once recognise sophisticated vocabulary but fail to retrieve it during writing.

The important historical fact is not that the child once needed help. It is that control successfully transferred inward.
66. A 90-Minute Lesson Should Not Become an Archiving Session
Archiving should happen around teaching, not instead of teaching.
- 0–10 minutes: retrieval and learner-state check.
- 10–30 minutes: current learning.
- 30–50 minutes: guided then independent practice.
- 50–65 minutes: changed surface, transfer or mixed work.
- 65–78 minutes: feedback and reattempt.
- 78–86 minutes: performance or integration block where relevant.
- 86–89 minutes: learner states the next independent move.
- 89–90 minutes: tutor records only the one or two observations that may matter later.

- Obsolete: no longer useful enough to influence future work.
This is conceptual housekeeping. It prevents the learner model from becoming an accumulating pile.
70. The Transition View
Before a major transition, read the archive lightly.
Do not reactivate every old issue.
Ask which historical boundaries the new environment is likely to stress:
- greater pace;
- longer papers;
- more abstraction;
- less teacher prompting;
- more independent revision;
- more mixed application;
- new representation demands.
Only then should archived history influence what the tutor chooses to sample.

Metacognitive research supports increasing learner monitoring and control. - Step 2: If inactive, could it improve a future teaching, studying, training, performance or transition decision?
- Step 3: If no, do not grant it archival privilege.
- Step 4: If yes, state the date and context.
- Step 5: Separate observed evidence from interpretation.
- Step 6: Record support level.
- Step 7: Record the mechanism hypothesis and confidence.
- Step 8: Record the intervention only if it changed future choice.
- Step 9: Record what changed in the learner.
- Step 10: Record durability, transfer or performance evidence where relevant.
- Step 11: State the current status explicitly.
- Step 12: State the future trigger that would justify reopening the history.
- Step 13: Remove broad identity language.

- Step 15: Ensure current evidence will outrank the note if they later conflict.
