How to Answer “Determine” Questions in PSLE Science Without Turning Determination Into Explanation

A PSLE Science question can ask you to determine a value, identity, condition, relationship or outcome from the information given. Many learners make the task harder by immediately writing a long causal explanation. Others do the opposite: they guess from a familiar keyword without actually using the evidence.

Why This Fits the 2026 PSLE Science Frame

For examination from 2026, PSLE Science assesses the 2023 Primary Science syllabus. The official objectives include applying scientific knowledge, interpreting and analysing information, evaluating information and methods, and communicating explanations and reasoning. A determine-style task can draw on those abilities even though “determine” itself is not a separate official assessment objective.

Worked Example 1 — Determine a Value

A table gives a starting temperature of 22°C and a final temperature of 29°C. The question asks for the temperature increase. The job is to determine the change: 7°C. A long explanation about heat transfer is unnecessary unless a later part asks why the temperature changed.

Worked Example 2 — Determine an Identity

Three unknown materials are described by properties. One is flexible, waterproof and does not absorb water. The task asks which material best fits a stated use. Determine by matching the relevant evidence to the use. Do not identify from appearance or familiarity alone.

Worked Example 3 — Determine a Relationship

Results are given for several light intensities and one measured response. To determine the relationship, first align the tested condition with the measured outcome, then describe the direction supported over the tested range. Do not add a causal mechanism if the task only asks what relationship the data show.

Worked Example 4 — Determine an Outcome From a Given Rule

A question gives an unfamiliar scientific rule and asks what happens when one condition changes. Apply the rule exactly to the case. The determination comes from the supplied relationship, not from guessing what usually happens in a familiar topic.

Determine Is Not the Same as Infer

An inference usually moves from evidence to a supported interpretation that is not directly stated. A determination may be more direct: reading a value, applying a rule, selecting an identity or deriving a result. Some tasks can involve both, but the learner should know which operation is doing the work.

Determine Is Not the Same as Explain

“Determine which set-up has the greater value” asks for a result. “Explain why that set-up has the greater value” asks for a mechanism. If both jobs are required, complete both. If only the first is asked, do not bury the result inside unnecessary explanation.

Find the Earliest Weak Link

  1. What exactly must I determine?
  2. Is it a value, identity, relationship or outcome?
  3. Which information directly bears on that job?
  4. Do I need a calculation, comparison, rule or classification?
  5. What condition limits the answer?
  6. Does the result need a unit?
  7. Does the question separately ask me to explain or justify?

Sometimes it does. Sometimes the task asks you to determine an identity, relationship or outcome without arithmetic. Let the scientific job decide the method.

Extra explanation can introduce unsupported claims or hide the requested result. Answer the dominant job first. Add mechanism only when it is actually required.

Use one topic and write four determine-style prompts that ask for different result types. Ask the learner to name the job before answering. This prevents “determine” from becoming a memorised one-step formula.

If the learner over-explains, ask them to put the final result on the first line. If the learner guesses, ask them to point to the exact evidence or rule that resolves the result.
