How to Track the Same PSLE Science Object When Its Name Changes Between Text, Diagram and Table

Wait, What? A PSLE Science question can quietly rename the same object without changing the science. The diagram may call it Set-up P. The paragraph may call it “the covered container”. A table may shorten that to “covered”. A later sentence may say “this set-up”. If you treat each label as a new object, perfectly correct scientific knowledge can be attached to the wrong thing.

This guide teaches one exact Primary 5/6 learner job: track one scientific object or set-up when its name changes across text, diagrams, tables and later sub-questions. The skill is not guessing what a letter stands for. It is building an evidence-based identity map so every condition, observation, measurement and conclusion stays attached to the correct object.

Do not follow words; follow identity. When a question introduces a new label, ask: What evidence shows this is the same object as something already introduced? Match location, contents, condition, connection, time, role and measured result. Write a tiny alias map if necessary: Set-up P = covered container = row “Covered” = this set-up. Then carry the scientific information forward under one identity.

This page owns cross-representation object aliasing in PSLE Science. It does not own generic vocabulary, diagram reading, table reading or a scientific concept such as heat, forces, plants or electricity. Those concept owners remain separate. The reader job here is narrower: recognise when different names refer to one scientific entity, and do not accidentally split or merge identities while reasoning.

This matters because the current PSLE Science framework assesses the application of scientific knowledge and scientific inquiry through words, diagrams, tables and graphs. A learner can understand a concept and still fail if the information from one representation is not attached to the same object in the next.

A Name Is Not the Object

Science questions use labels as handles. The handle can change while the object remains the same. An object may be identified by a letter, a physical description, its treatment, its position in a diagram, its function, or a row heading. None of these labels is the object itself.

A strong learner treats these as possible aliases until the evidence confirms them. A weak learner often uses whichever word is nearest on the page, then attaches a result, property or mechanism to the wrong object.

The Alias-Building Protocol

Step 1: Build the first identity card

When an object or set-up first appears, record only what is actually given: its label, relevant contents, condition, connection, position, time and measured quantity. You do not need to copy the entire question. The purpose is to give the object a stable scientific identity.

Example identity card: P — same-sized container; 100 mL water; covered; placed in location X; temperature measured every 5 minutes.

Step 2: Notice when the wording changes

A change in wording is a signal to check identity. It is not proof of a new object. Ask whether the new phrase could describe the object already known. Look for a distinctive condition or role rather than surface wording.

Step 3: Demand at least one reliable identity bridge

Useful bridges include an explicit statement, a unique label, a matching condition, the same measurement history, the same connection in a diagram, or a clearly continued time sequence. Do not use mere page position or visual closeness as the only bridge.

Step 4: Write the alias explicitly

For difficult questions, a five-second scratch note can prevent a long chain of errors: P = covered container = Covered row. If the question later introduces Q, keep Q separate unless evidence says otherwise.

Step 5: Carry forward only information that still applies

Identity continuity does not mean every condition remains unchanged forever. The same object can be heated, cooled, opened, moved or measured later. Track both who it is and what state or condition it is in now.

Step 6: Check the answer backwards

After writing, point to every noun or pronoun in your explanation and ask: Which object does this refer to? Then trace the evidence for that object. This catches answers in which the right mechanism has been attached to the wrong set-up.

Worked Example 1: Diagram Name → Table Name

Imagine an original question with two identical containers. In the diagram they are labelled P and Q. P is shown covered; Q is uncovered. A later results table has rows labelled only “Covered” and “Uncovered”.

Before comparing values, establish the aliases: P = Covered row and Q = Uncovered row. Only then read the measurements. If you skip this mapping, a correct numerical comparison can be assigned to the wrong set-up.

The reasoning receipt is not “P comes first, so it must be the first row.” The receipt is: the unique condition shown for P matches the row heading “Covered”. Identity is supported by the scientific description, not by order.

Worked Example 2: One Object, Three Time Labels

A diagram shows a metal object labelled R at the start. The paragraph later says “the heated object”. A final diagram labels it “object after cooling”. The learner must decide whether the question follows one object through stages or introduces new specimens.

Evidence may show continuity: the method states that R is heated and then allowed to cool. Therefore R = heated object = object after cooling. The object identity remains stable while its state changes. This prevents the false idea that the final drawing represents a different object simply because the label changed.

Now separate identity from state. R at the start and R after heating are the same object, but statements about its temperature at one time cannot automatically be copied to another time.

Worked Example 3: Same Description, Different Objects

Aliasing can fail in the opposite direction. Suppose two set-ups both contain “a beaker of water”. Later the question says “the beaker”. If both are scientifically possible referents, the phrase alone is not enough to merge them. Look for a condition, label, location or previous sentence that identifies which one is meant.

The rule is symmetrical: do not split one object merely because its name changes, and do not merge two objects merely because their names are similar.

Worked Example 4: The Table Compresses More Than the Diagram

A diagram may distinguish “Set-up A: fan on” and “Set-up B: fan off”. A table heading may later shorten these to “On” and “Off”. The scientific objects are not the words “On” and “Off”; those are condition labels. Your alias map should preserve both the set-up identity and the condition: A ↔ fan on, B ↔ fan off.

This matters if a later sub-question asks what would happen if the fan condition were reversed. The set-up label and the condition must not be fused into one unchangeable identity.

Students often make one of two errors. They treat a condition as if it were the object itself, or they carry an earlier condition forward just because the object is the same. Strong reasoning keeps identity, condition and time in separate slots.

Failure Signatures

  • You use a correct value but attach it to the wrong set-up.
  • You think a new noun phrase automatically means a new object.
  • You assume the first table row belongs to the first diagram label without checking.
  • You merge two similar-looking containers even though the question treats them separately.
  • You carry an earlier condition into a later stage because the object identity stayed the same.
  • You use “it” or “this” in your own answer when two possible objects are present.
  • You can explain the science aloud, but your explanation switches objects halfway through.

Earliest Weak-Link Diagnosis

  1. Can the learner name every scientific object or set-up before answering?
  2. Can the learner state the relevant condition for each object?
  3. Can the learner identify when a new label appears?
  4. Can the learner justify whether the new label is an alias or a genuinely new object?
  5. Can the learner preserve the alias through a table, graph or later sub-question?
  6. Can the learner update the object’s state without losing its identity?
  7. Can the learner write the final explanation with unambiguous object references?

Repair the first failing step. If object identities were never established, drilling more scientific facts will not fix the error. If identity is correct but an old condition is carried forward, the repair belongs to temporal or condition tracking instead.

Misconception Repair: “Different Words Mean Different Things”

In ordinary reading, different words sometimes signal different things. In scientific questions, several expressions can refer to one entity because each highlights a different feature. “P”, “the covered container” and “the experimental set-up” may all point to the same object.

The repair is not to memorise synonyms. Ask what each phrase refers to in this question. Reference is established by the information structure, not by a permanent word list.

Misconception Repair: “Same Object Means Same Conditions”

An object can remain the same while its condition changes. A container can be opened. A specimen can be moved. A material can be heated. The identity line continues, but the state line changes. Keep two tracks in your scratch work if necessary.

This table does not tell you what caused the change; it merely prevents identity and condition from being mixed before you reason.

A Small Alias Map for Difficult Questions

You do not need a complicated notation system. Use a short one-line map:

  • P = covered flask = Covered row
  • Q = uncovered flask = Uncovered row
  • R(start) = R(after heating) = same object, different state

If the map becomes ambiguous, return to the question. Do not force an alias merely to make the diagram easier.

Unfamiliar Transfer Practice

Practise the identity job across very different science surfaces. Use an original plant set-up, then a circuit diagram, then a materials table, then a simple energy-transfer situation. Keep the scientific concepts simple. Change only how the same object is named.

A useful progression is: stable label → descriptive alias → compressed table label → time-qualified alias → ambiguous alias that must be rejected. The learner should justify every mapping.

Retrieval Practice Sequence

  1. Give a diagram and ask the learner to make an identity card for each object.
  2. Rewrite the paragraph using different descriptions for the same objects.
  3. Ask the learner to build an alias map without answering the science question yet.
  4. Add a table with compressed row labels and check whether results remain paired correctly.
  5. Change one condition over time while keeping the object identity stable.
  6. Add a deliberately ambiguous phrase and ask the learner to say that the evidence is insufficient rather than guess.
  7. After a delay, repeat with a new topic and no alias-map prompt.

Delayed Independent Return Test

After a gap, give an unfamiliar original question in which one object has three names across a paragraph, a diagram and a table. Ask the learner to mark every expression referring to that object, state which condition changes, and then solve the scientific reasoning task. Success means the object is tracked correctly without being prompted to look for aliases.

  • I know exactly which object or set-up each statement refers to.
  • I have evidence for every alias I created.
  • I did not merge objects because they looked or sounded similar.
  • I did not split one object because its description changed.
  • I kept object identity separate from condition and time.
  • Every number and observation is still attached to the correct object.
  • My final explanation names the object clearly enough that the reader cannot swap the referent.

Parent and Tutor Teaching Guide

When a learner makes an identity error, avoid correcting the science first. Ask, “Which set-up are you talking about?” Then ask the child to point to that set-up in every representation. The goal is to make the referent visible.

Use coloured pens only if they help the child build meaning; colour itself should never become the scientific evidence. One low-tech method is to underline every expression that refers to P with the same pencil mark, then write the alias map in the margin.

Do not over-support. After two or three guided examples, remove the reminder. Present a changed question and see whether the learner notices the renaming independently. A learner who can follow aliases only after an adult says “watch the labels” has not yet transferred the skill.

If a child repeatedly confuses object identity with state, separate the teaching: first ask “Who is it?”, then “What condition is it in now?”, then “What happened to it?” Three short questions are often clearer than one long correction.
