Wait, What? You can understand every scientific fact in a question and still choose the opposite answer because of one small word.
A learner reads a PSLE Science multiple-choice question, understands the diagram, recognises the concept and correctly judges three of the options. Then the stem says NOT, EXCEPT or LEAST. The learner’s Science is sound, but the task has been mentally flipped back to the more familiar positive question.
This is not a reason to become afraid of “trick words”. It is a reason to control the logical job of the question before solving the Science.
Quick Answer
Do not treat NOT, EXCEPT and LEAST as if they all mean “find the false answer”. They do different jobs.
- NOT / DOES NOT / IS NOT: reverse the truth or membership test specified by the stem.
- EXCEPT: find the option that does not belong to the set described by the stem.
- LEAST: rank the valid possibilities and choose the smallest, weakest or least likely one under the stated criterion.
- CANNOT / INCORRECT / NOT SUPPORTED: test the exact logical or evidential condition named in the question.
The safest routine is:
NAME THE OPERATOR → SAY THE TARGET IN YOUR OWN WORDS → TEST EVERY OPTION AGAINST THAT TARGET → CHECK THE POLARITY BEFORE ANSWERING.
The Exact PSLE Science Learning Job This Guide Owns
This guide owns one specific job: keeping the logical direction and scope of task-changing words visible while solving PSLE Science.
It does not replace the separate guide on “Which cannot be concluded?” questions. That article owns a narrower evidence-conclusion problem: deciding which claim is not supported by the results. This guide is broader and different. It covers how negation, exception and ranking operators alter the response target before the scientific reasoning begins.
For the 2026 PSLE, SEAB states that Science assesses the 2023 Primary Science syllabus, with objectives that include knowledge with understanding and application of scientific knowledge and inquiry. Questions may require interpreting information, evaluating observations or methods and communicating reasoning. The logic of the task therefore matters because a scientifically correct statement can still be the wrong response to the question being asked.
First Distinction: Negation, Exclusion and Ranking Are Not the Same

The first repair is therefore linguistic precision. Before thinking about the topic, decide what logical operation the question is asking you to perform.
Why Underlining the Word Is Helpful but Not Enough
Many learners are told to circle or underline NOT. That can help attention, but it does not guarantee correct reasoning. A student can circle NOT and still solve the positive question automatically.
The stronger move is to rewrite the target mentally:
- “Which statement is NOT true?” becomes “Find the one statement that fails the truth test.”
- “All the following are evidence of X EXCEPT…” becomes “Three belong as evidence of X; find the outsider.”
- “Which is LEAST likely?” becomes “All may be possible; compare them and choose the weakest under the stated condition.”
Notice that LEAST does not automatically mean false. The least likely option may still be possible.
The Target Sentence Method
Before looking at the options, finish this sentence:
I am looking for the option that ______ under the exact condition ______.
Examples:
- I am looking for the option that does not show the stated relationship under these test conditions.
- I am looking for the option that does not belong to this classification group under this criterion.
- I am looking for the option that is least strongly supported by the evidence.
- I am looking for the option that cannot be concluded from these results.
This converts a small word into an explicit scientific job.
Worked Example 1: NOT Changes the Truth Test
Imagine an original practice question with four statements about a simple system. The stem asks:
Which statement is NOT supported by the diagram?
A learner who forgets NOT may search for the most clearly supported statement. That is exactly the opposite job.
A better method is to test each option with the same sentence:
- Does the diagram support Option A?
- Does the diagram support Option B?
- Does the diagram support Option C?
- Does the diagram support Option D?
Then choose the one that fails. Do not change the test halfway through.
Worked Example 2: EXCEPT Is a Set-Membership Problem
Suppose a question says:
All the following observations provide evidence that a change occurred EXCEPT…
The job is not “find any false statement”. One option might be a scientifically true statement that simply does not serve as evidence for the particular change.
That distinction matters:
- truth of the statement is one question;
- membership in the requested evidence set is another.
EXCEPT asks you to preserve the criterion that defines the group, then identify the outsider.
Worked Example 3: LEAST Is a Ranking Problem, Not a Falsehood Test
Imagine four possible explanations for an observation. The question asks which is least likely given the evidence.
A weak approach is to look for one obviously impossible statement. But the options may all be scientifically possible. The task is to compare support.
Rank them by asking:
- Which explanation matches the exact condition?
- Which is consistent with the observations?
- Which requires the fewest unsupported assumptions?
- Which is contradicted by any given evidence?
“Least likely” means weakest under the comparison criterion. It does not mean “scientifically absurd”.
Scope Matters: What Exactly Is Being Negated?
Negation can attach to different parts of a sentence.
Compare:
- Which set-up does not show an increase?
- Which set-up shows an increase that is not caused by the tested condition?
- Which statement about Set-up B is not supported?
These are three different jobs. In the first, you are checking the result. In the second, you are checking causation. In the third, you are checking evidence support.
Do not let the presence of NOT erase the rest of the sentence. The operator always acts on something specific.
The Double-Negative Trap
A sentence can contain more than one negative idea. For example:
Which option is NOT evidence that the process did not occur?
Do not try to solve this by feeling. Rewrite the meaning in small steps:
- First identify what would count as evidence that the process did not occur.
- Then find the option that does not belong to that evidence set.
When language becomes logically dense, simplify the task before applying the Science.
The Four-Pass Method for Negative and Exception Questions
- PASS 1 — Operator: find NOT, EXCEPT, LEAST, CANNOT, INCORRECT or other task-changing wording.
- PASS 2 — Scope: identify exactly which property, relationship, evidence test or ranking criterion the operator changes.
- PASS 3 — Science: evaluate every option under the same scientific condition and evidence.
- PASS 4 — Polarity: before selecting, ask whether you are returning the option that passes or fails the test.
The final polarity check takes only a moment and catches a surprisingly expensive class of mistakes.
How This Fits the PSLE Science Reasoning Chain
The logical operator does not replace scientific reasoning. It tells you what result the reasoning must produce.
READ GIVEN INFORMATION → IDENTIFY THE SCIENTIFIC OBJECT OR RELATIONSHIP → DISTINGUISH OBSERVATION FROM INFERENCE → SELECT THE RELEVANT CONCEPT → EXPLAIN OR TEST THE MECHANISM → CONNECT TO THE CONDITION → STATE THE OUTCOME → CHECK THE OUTCOME AGAINST THE OPERATOR.
That last check is essential. A correct scientific conclusion can still be the wrong answer if the stem asks for the exception.
Failure Signatures You Can Observe
- The learner circles NOT but chooses the most obviously true option.
- The learner changes the criterion while eliminating options.
- The learner treats EXCEPT as “find the false fact” even when the task is about relevance or evidence.
- The learner treats LEAST as impossible instead of weakest.
- The learner correctly reasons through all four options, then reverses the answer at the end by mistake.
- The learner uses a general Science fact but ignores the exact condition named in the stem.
- The learner solves “cannot be concluded” as “which statement is false”. Unsupported and false are not the same.
Earliest Weak-Link Diagnosis
If a learner repeatedly misses these questions, identify the first failure rather than calling the problem “careless”.
- Word-recognition failure: the operator was not noticed.
- Scope failure: the learner saw NOT but did not identify what was being negated.
- Criterion failure: EXCEPT or LEAST was treated as a generic falsehood search.
- Science failure: the operator was understood but the concept or evidence was not.
- Execution failure: the learner evaluated correctly but selected the opposite polarity at the end.
Each failure needs a different repair.
Original Practice: Build the Logic Before the Topic
Practise with simple statement sets first. You can even remove most of the Science and train the operator:
- Three statements belong to Group X. One does not. Ask an EXCEPT question.
- Four outcomes are possible but have different likelihoods. Ask a LEAST question.
- Three claims are supported by a table. One is not. Ask a NOT SUPPORTED question.
Then put the Science back in. This helps you discover whether the weak link is logical reading or scientific knowledge.
How to Practise Without Becoming Dependent on Highlighting
Highlighting is temporary support. Independence means the learner can hold the task direction internally.
- First practise with the operator highlighted.
- Then practise with ordinary text but say the target aloud.
- Next write only a tiny symbol on rough work: “−” for negation, “OUT” for exception, “RANK↓” for least.
- Finally remove the symbol and perform the polarity check mentally.
The goal is not to memorise a ritual forever. It is to stop the positive default from overriding the written task.
Unfamiliar Transfer Test
Test the skill across different PSLE Science jobs:
- a classification question using EXCEPT;
- a graph question using LEAST increase;
- an investigation question using NOT controlled;
- an evidence question using CANNOT be concluded;
- a mechanism question asking which statement does NOT explain the result.
If the learner succeeds only in one familiar wording, the skill is not yet transferable.
Delayed Independent Return Test
After several days, use four fresh questions with different operators. Do not pre-warn the learner that the set is about negative wording.
Record four things:
- Was the operator noticed?
- Was its scope interpreted correctly?
- Was the Science evaluated correctly?
- Was the final option returned with the correct polarity?
This produces a real diagnostic receipt instead of “be more careful”.
Answer-Checking Receipt
- Operator: What word changes the task?
- Scope: What exactly does it apply to?
- Criterion: Am I testing truth, evidence, membership, possibility or ranking?
- Condition: Did every option get tested under the same stated condition?
- Polarity: Am I returning the one that passes or the one that fails?
Parent and Tutor Teaching Guide
When a child answers the opposite question, avoid saying only, “You did not read carefully.” That description is too broad to teach from.
Ask the learner to point to the operator and complete this sentence: “This question wants the option that…” If the learner cannot finish the sentence, the failure occurred before the Science began.
If the target sentence is correct but the final answer is wrong, compare the option-by-option reasoning. Perhaps the Science is weak. Perhaps the final polarity flipped. Keep those diagnoses separate.
For EXCEPT questions, teach category membership rather than “find the wrong one”. For LEAST questions, ask the child to rank all plausible options rather than jump immediately to one. For NOT questions, insist that the exact negated property is named.
