How to Answer “Differentiate” Questions in PSLE Science Without Turning Them Into a General Comparison

Wait, What? “Differentiate” is not just another word for “compare”.

In the MOE Primary Science glossary, compare means identify similarities and differences, while differentiate means identify differences. That small wording change matters. A learner can know the Science, produce a beautiful comparison, and still include material the question did not ask for.

When a PSLE Science question asks you to differentiate, choose one scientific basis at a time and state how the two objects, concepts, processes or set-ups differ on that basis. Do not add similarities unless another command asks for them. Do not switch basis halfway through a sentence. A useful structure is: A has/does X, whereas B has/does Y—but use natural wording rather than memorising one compulsory sentence template.

Why “Differentiate” Is a Distinct Scientific Job

Consider two processes. A broad comparison might include one similarity and two differences. A differentiation task asks for the differences only. The scientific evidence may be identical; the required output changes.

The Same-Basis Rule

A difference is strongest when both sides answer the same scientific question. If you differentiate two structures by function, give the function of both. If you differentiate two processes by what changes, state what changes in both. If you differentiate two set-ups by the tested condition, state that condition for both.

ONE DIFFERENCE = ONE BASIS + TWO SIDES.

Worked Example 1: One-Sided Difference

A learner writes: “Set-up A has a larger surface area.” That may be true, but it leaves the reference implicit. A clearer differentiation is: “Set-up A has a larger exposed surface area than Set-up B.” Both objects and the scientific basis are visible.

Worked Example 2: Switching Basis Halfway

Suppose the learner writes, “Object P is heavier, while Object Q moves more slowly.” The first clause uses mass; the second uses speed. That is not one clean difference. Repair by choosing one basis: compare their masses, or compare their speeds, if the evidence supports it.

Worked Example 3: Differentiating Observations From Mechanisms

If asked to differentiate two results, report the observed difference. Do not replace the result with a causal mechanism. If asked to differentiate two mechanisms, then the mechanism itself becomes the comparison basis. Always identify what kind of thing the question asks you to differentiate.

Worked Example 4: Two Valid Differences

If a question asks for two differences, do not write the same idea twice using different vocabulary. “A has a higher temperature” and “B has a lower temperature” are one difference, not two. A second difference must use another scientifically relevant basis.

The Differentiation Protocol

  1. Circle the two objects, processes or set-ups.
  2. Underline the word or phrase telling you what aspect matters.
  3. Choose one scientific basis.
  4. State both sides on that basis.
  5. If another difference is required, choose a second distinct basis.
  6. Remove similarities unless requested.
  7. Check that every claim comes from evidence or established scientific knowledge.

Failure Signatures

  • Only one object is described.
  • The sentence changes from structure to function or from mass to speed midway.
  • A similarity is included when only differences were requested.
  • The learner repeats the same difference in reverse wording.
  • The answer uses a true but irrelevant distinction.
  • The learner explains why a difference occurs when only the difference itself was requested.

Ask: “What is the basis of this difference?” If the learner cannot name one shared basis, repair comparison structure first. If the basis is clear but one side is scientifically wrong, repair concept knowledge. If both are correct but a similarity has been added, the issue is command control.

Misconception Repair

“Differentiate means find anything different.” The difference must be relevant to the scientific question and supported by the information given.

“Two opposite sentences count as two differences.” Usually they are the same relational difference expressed twice.

“A difference answer must explain the cause.” Not unless the question also asks for explanation.

“Compare and differentiate always mean the same thing.” The MOE glossary distinguishes them: compare includes similarities and differences; differentiate focuses on differences.

Use the PSLE Science Reasoning Chain Without Overrunning the Command

Read the given information, identify the objects, decide whether the difference is directly observed or inferred, select the relevant scientific basis, state the difference, then check it against the evidence. If explanation is not requested, the reasoning chain can stop before a causal mechanism is written.

Practice Sequence

  • Convert broad compare answers into difference-only answers.
  • Mark the basis of every comparison in the margin.
  • Find duplicated differences written in reverse form.
  • Practise across structures, processes, data patterns and investigation set-ups.
  • Mix differentiate with explain questions so the learner must switch response type.

Unfamiliar Transfer Test

Give two unfamiliar systems and ask for two differences. The learner passes if they choose two defensible bases, state both sides for each and resist inserting similarities or mechanisms.

Delayed Independent Return

Return several days later with a new pair of diagrams or data sets. Do not remind the learner of the same-basis rule. If they naturally align both sides before writing, the skill is becoming independent.

  • I identified the two things being differentiated.
  • Each difference uses one shared scientific basis.
  • Both sides are visible.
  • I did not count reversed wording as a new difference.
  • I did not add similarities unless requested.

Parent and Tutor Teaching Guide

Use a simple two-column table during teaching: Basis | A | B. Ask the learner to fill the basis before writing a sentence. This makes the hidden comparison structure visible. Fade the table once the learner can keep the basis mentally.

If a child gives a one-sided fact, ask “Compared with what?” If they switch basis, ask “Are both halves answering the same scientific question?” These two prompts repair most differentiation errors without giving the answer away.
