One says:
This is easy.
The other says:

Who is correct?
Both may be accurately describing their own state.
That is the beginning of perspective-taking.
The question did not change.
The receiver did.
Knowledge changed.
Prior experience changed.
Confidence changed.
What each student noticed changed.
The apparent difficulty of the same object changed with the observer.
Now move to a classroom discussion.
A teacher explains a concept and thinks the explanation is beautifully clear.
A student remains confused.
The teacher repeats the same explanation, only louder and longer.
Still confused.
Perhaps the problem is not effort.
Perhaps the teacher is reasoning from a knowledge state the student does not yet possess.
Now perspective-taking becomes educational machinery.
- What does this learner already know?
- What distinction are they missing?
- Which word means something different to them?
- What appears obvious only because I already know the answer?
Perspective-taking is often described as “seeing something from another person’s point of view.”
Useful.
But Wintour House needs a more exact version.
Perspective-taking is the temporary construction of another receiver’s information state, assumptions, goals, constraints and possible interpretations so that we can reason about what the world looks like from there.
Temporary matters.
You do not need to become the other person.
Construction matters.
You can be wrong about their perspective.
Information state matters.
What you know cannot simply be copied into what they know.
Goals matter.
Two people can interpret the same evidence differently because they are solving different problems.
Constraints matter.
Time, role, responsibility, access and risk alter what counts as a sensible action.
And finally:
Perspective-taking does not require agreement.
You can understand exactly why someone believes something and still conclude that they are mistaken.
That is important.
The stronger sequence is:
understand accurately first; judge carefully second.

If a learner became excellent at ten perspective-taking operations, which ten would still matter when the classroom, curriculum, culture, workplace and technology changed?
Before the Top 10: Your Knowledge Is Privileged Information
Imagine this.
You hide a pencil inside a drawer.
A friend leaves the room.
While they are gone, someone moves the pencil into a cupboard.
You know where it is now.
Your friend does not.
If asked:
Where will your friend look?
the important reasoning operation is not:
Where is the pencil?
It is:
What information is available to the friend?
That distinction seems simple.
Human beings repeatedly fail versions of it.
Once we know something, that knowledge becomes hard to mentally subtract.
Research with children aged 6–10 and adults found that all groups were slower or less efficient when judging another person’s perspective when it differed from their own. See Surtees and Apperly on egocentrism and perspective taking.
Education is full of this problem.
- A teacher knows that the diagram represents a circuit. The child sees unfamiliar symbols.
- An expert knows that a paragraph contains a counterargument. The novice sees several sentences.
- A Mathematics tutor sees a simultaneous-equations structure. The student sees buses and tickets.
- A reader who knows the ending of a novel interprets an early clue differently from a first-time reader.
- A programmer who knows the architecture reads an error message differently from a beginner.
The first great perspective-taking discipline is therefore:
do not silently donate your knowledge to the person whose perspective you are modelling.
1. Learn to Separate “What I Know” From “What They Know”
Suppose a student gives an incorrect answer.
The teacher thinks:
But I explained this yesterday.
True.
That tells us what information was presented.
It does not tell us what information became available in the student’s usable model.
Perspective-taking begins by building two temporary columns mentally:
MY INFORMATION STATE
and
THEIR INFORMATION STATE
The distinction is not about intelligence.
It is about access.
- Perhaps I saw the answer key. They did not.
- Perhaps they missed Tuesday’s lesson.
- Perhaps I know the technical meaning of rate. They are using the everyday meaning.
- Perhaps I remember the earlier paragraph containing the definition. They began reading on the next page.
- Perhaps I know that the graph is cumulative. They believe each point represents the amount produced during that interval.
Now the misunderstanding becomes less mysterious.
This also works among students.
A learner says:
How can you not see it?
That sentence usually contains useful diagnostic information.
One learner has compressed a sequence into a familiar structure.
The other has not.
Instead of repeating:
It’s obvious.
ask:
What am I using here that the other person may not yet be using?
That question is intellectually generous without lowering the standard.
Worth learning because: accurate perspective-taking begins when the learner stops assuming that information available to oneself is automatically available to everybody else.
2. Learn to Identify the Other Person’s Actual Goal
Two people can have exactly the same information and still interpret it differently because they are trying to accomplish different things.
Consider a school timetable.
- Student: “Where is my next class?”
- Teacher: “Which rooms are free for the next period?”
- Administrator: “Where is room capacity being underused?”
- Fire-safety officer: “Which routes must remain clear?”
Same timetable.
Different question.
The information becomes relevant differently because the receiver goal differs.
This is one of the most powerful forms of perspective-taking because it moves beyond:
What are they thinking?
toward:
What problem are they trying to solve?
A learner reading feedback should ask: What was the teacher evaluating? Scientific accuracy? Clarity? Evidence? Method? Exam technique?
A writer should ask: What does this reader need—background, proof, instructions or reassurance?
A project group should ask: What does the audience need to decide?
A disagreement should ask: What outcome is the other person trying to protect?
Sometimes an argument that looks irrational becomes more understandable once the objective changes.
That does not make it correct.
It makes it intelligible.
Worth learning because: viewpoints often differ not because people see different facts, but because they are using those facts to solve different problems.
3. Learn to Reconstruct the Evidence Available From Their Position
Perspective-taking should not become imaginative mind-reading.
“I think she feels…”
Maybe.
What evidence?
A better method asks:
What did this person actually see, hear, read or experience?
In History, this is essential.
A person acting in 1940 did not know what happened in 1945.
Judging their decision using later information commits a hindsight error.
Historical perspective-taking therefore requires reconstructing the information, norms and options available at the time rather than simply importing modern knowledge backward.
The same discipline applies to ordinary learning.
- A teacher sees the finished answer. The student saw only the question.
- A marker sees the whole script. The candidate had thirty seconds remaining.
- A parent sees the final grade. The child experienced twelve weeks of changing understanding.
- A classmate sees the polished presentation. They did not see the failed drafts.
Ask:
What evidence is actually inside the perspective I am modelling?
Which evidence is outside it?
That produces a much more faithful receiver model.
Worth learning because: perspective-taking becomes disciplined when it is constrained by what the other person could genuinely have known rather than by what we can imagine after the fact.
4. Learn to Separate Perspective From Truth
This distinction protects the whole article.
Suppose someone believes:
The Moon produces its own light.
You understand why.
They see it shining.
They may never have considered reflected sunlight.
You can reconstruct the model.
Excellent.
Is the model therefore correct?
No.
Perspective-taking explains why a belief may have formed.
Critical thinking evaluates whether that belief survives evidence.
Those are separate operations.

That is excellent teaching.

multiple perspectives exist, therefore all perspectives are equally valid.
No.
Different perspectives can contain different information, interests and assumptions.
Where a question has empirical constraints, evidence still matters.
Perspective-taking should improve evaluation.
Not suspend it.
Worth learning because: understanding the route by which another person reached a belief is different from deciding whether the belief is true.
5. Learn to Model Constraints, Not Just Opinions
A perspective is more than an opinion.
Consider a student who does not complete a task.
One model says:
They do not care.
Another asks:
- Did they understand the instructions?
- Was the prerequisite knowledge present?
- Was the task accessible?
- Did they have the required material?
- Was the time estimate realistic?
- Was another deadline competing?
- Did they know where to begin?
Constraint-based perspective-taking is powerful because behaviour often makes more sense when we understand the operating envelope.
The same applies outside school.
A doctor. A patient. A teacher. A policymaker. A parent. A business owner. A child.
They can inspect the same decision while carrying different responsibilities and risks.
What appears “obviously best” from one role may create a serious cost from another.
A good perspective-taking question is:
What can this person not safely ignore?
That question often reveals more than:
What do they believe?
Worth learning because: another person’s reasoning becomes more intelligible when the learner represents the constraints, responsibilities and risks shaping what that person can realistically do.
6. Learn to Restate the Other Position Before Challenging It
This is one of the cleanest tests available.
Can you state the other person’s position in a form they would recognise?
Not a parody.
Not the weakest version.
Not:
So basically you think…
followed by something they never said.
A strong learner can say:
Your argument is that homework should be shorter, not because practice is useless, but because beyond a certain amount the later questions add little learning while reducing sleep. Is that accurate?
Now challenge it.
Perhaps the evidence for the threshold is weak.
Perhaps the sleep claim is supported.
Perhaps workload differs across subjects.
But first the argument exists in a recognisable form.
The deeper Wintour House principle is not rhetorical courtesy.
It is model fidelity.
If I cannot represent your argument correctly, any criticism may be aimed at an argument that exists only in my own head.
This also makes disagreements faster.
Much conflict disappears once people discover that they were attacking different propositions.
Worth learning because: a criticism becomes more meaningful when it is aimed at the position the other person actually holds rather than a simplified substitute.
7. Learn to Change Viewpoint Without Losing the Object
Perspective-taking is not always social.
Sometimes the “other perspective” is literally another viewpoint.
- A geometric object.
- A map.
- A diagram.
- A circuit.
- A graph.
- A system.
What does this look like from another position?
Spatial perspective-taking is distinguishable from cognitive and affective forms, but the underlying educational habit is useful: keep the object stable while changing the observer.

- In Mathematics: How would this relationship look graphically rather than algebraically?
- In Science: What would the system look like from inside the boundary rather than outside it?
- In writing: What will the reader know at this sentence?
- In programming: What does the user see compared with what the backend knows?
- In teaching: What does the worked example look like before the solution path has been revealed?
The central skill is:
change the observation point while preserving the identity of what is being observed.
Worth learning because: changing viewpoint can expose information hidden from the original position without requiring the learner to abandon the underlying object.
8. Learn to Compare Multiple Perspectives Without Averaging Them Into Mush
Three perspectives appear.
A common educational response is:
Everyone has a point.
Perhaps.
But that is not yet analysis.
Perspective A may have stronger evidence.
Perspective B may expose a neglected constraint.
Perspective C may be based on false information.
Do not average them into one polite blur.
Instead compare them.
- What does each perspective know?
- What does each omit?
- What does each value?
- Which assumptions differ?
- Which claims conflict?
- Can both be true under different conditions?
- Which question is each actually answering?

A sophisticated essay does not demonstrate breadth merely by mentioning government, business, citizens and young people.

Then evidence decides how much weight each perspective deserves.
Worth learning because: intellectual pluralism becomes useful only when perspectives remain distinct enough to compare rather than being flattened into superficial balance.
9. Learn to Test Your Model of the Other Person
Perspective-taking contains a dangerous illusion.
You imagine another person’s viewpoint.
It feels coherent.
Therefore you assume it is accurate.
No.
The perspective is a hypothesis.
Test it.
So you are worried mainly about the deadline, not the difficulty?
Listen.
No. The deadline is fine. I do not know which source to trust.
Excellent.
Model updated.
Or:
I thought you chose that method because it was faster.
No. I chose it because it was the only one I remembered.
Again:
update.
This is crucial because perspective-taking can accidentally become projection.
We imagine what we would think if we were in the other person’s position.
That is not necessarily what they think.
So the skill needs a return path.
Model → check → correct.
The receiver gets a vote.
Worth learning because: perspective-taking becomes reliable only when the learner treats their model of another mind as revisable rather than as privileged access to what that person “really” thinks.
10. Learn to Return to Your Own Judgement After Taking the Other Perspective
This is the final discipline.
You understand the other side.
Good.
Now come home.
Perspective-taking should enlarge judgement.
Not dissolve it.
Suppose a student understands why a classmate wants to copy homework.
They are overwhelmed.
Deadline close.
Several unfinished tasks.
The perspective is understandable.
Does understanding require agreeing to help them copy?
No.
Perhaps the better response is to help with the first problem or speak to the teacher.
Perspective-taking research in negotiation is useful here because it shows the capability can improve strategic outcomes without being identical to empathy or benevolence. What does this perspective change about my judgement—and what does it not change?
Maybe it changes the explanation.
Maybe the response.
Maybe the wording.
Maybe the policy.
Maybe nothing.
But the learner returns with a richer model.
That is the point.
Worth learning because: perspective-taking should inform agency rather than replace it.

- Constraint modelling. Include responsibilities, limits and risks.
- Faithful restatement. Represent the other position before attacking it.
- Viewpoint shift. Change observer position while keeping the object stable.
- Perspective comparison. Keep multiple views distinct enough to evaluate.
- Model test. Check your reconstruction against the receiver or other evidence.
- Return to judgement. Reintegrate the perspective without surrendering independent evaluation.
SEPARATE → RECONSTRUCT → CONSTRAIN → COMPARE → TEST → RETURN
The quieter version is:
Know what you know. Work out what they know. Understand what they are trying to do. Test whether you represented them fairly. Then judge with both perspectives available.
That is perspective-taking.
Not politeness.
Not emotional surrender.
Not automatic agreement.
Not pretending every perspective is equally well supported.
It is a disciplined change of receiver.
Perspective-Taking Is Not the Same as Empathy
This boundary should be explicit.
Empathy concerns affective engagement with another person’s emotional state.
Perspective-taking concerns constructing a cognitive representation of another person’s state, beliefs, goals, motives or information.
The two can interact.
They are not interchangeable.

A learner can understand why another student is frightened without feeling the same fear.
A learner can share somebody’s distress without understanding why they made a particular decision.
Different operation.

Perspective-Taking Is Not the Same as Agreement
Understanding a creationist argument does not make evolutionary evidence disappear.
Understanding why someone misread a graph does not make the misreading correct.
Understanding why a historical actor believed a rumour does not make the rumour true.
Perspective-taking gives us a better model of the believer.
Evidence still evaluates the belief.

Perspective-Taking Is Not the Same as Critical Thinking
Critical thinking asks:
- What is the claim?
- What evidence supports it?
- What alternatives exist?
- What assumptions are hidden?
- Does the conclusion follow?
Perspective-taking asks something different:
How might this claim, evidence or situation appear from another receiver state?
The other perspective may reveal a hidden assumption or alternative.
Useful.
But critical evaluation remains a separate operation.
A learner can take many perspectives and still reason badly.
Another can evaluate evidence rigorously while being poor at modelling how another person understands the problem.
Both skills matter.
Perspective-Taking Is Not the Same as Social Learning

Perspective-taking can occur completely alone.
Reading a historical letter.
Planning an explanation.
Writing for an audience.
Predicting how a novice will interpret instructions.
It can also improve social learning.
But it does not own the social learning loop.
Perspective-Taking Is Not the Same as Communication
Communication asks whether a message moves successfully between people.
Perspective-taking can improve communication by helping the sender model the receiver.
But it is upstream.
Before choosing the message, ask:
- What does this receiver already know?
- Which term may be ambiguous?
- What goal are they pursuing?
That is perspective-taking.
The message itself belongs to the communication layer.
Perspective-Taking Is Not the Same as Mind-Reading
This is perhaps the most important practical warning.
She is quiet, so she must be angry.
He asked twice, so he does not trust me.
They rejected the proposal because they hate the idea.
Maybe.
Perhaps not.
Perspective-taking should generate hypotheses about another state.
It should not turn weak cues into certainty.
The better formulation is:
One possible interpretation is…
Then check.
Without that return, sophisticated perspective-taking can become sophisticated projection.
For Primary Students
Primary perspective-taking can be taught very gently.
- What can you see that your partner cannot?
- What does the character know at this point in the story?
- Did they hear what you heard?
- Why might that person choose something different?
- Can you explain your friend’s answer before explaining your own?
- What might the teacher think you mean when you write this sentence?
A beautiful classroom exercise is to give two children different pieces of information.
Each must predict what the other will conclude.
Then compare.
The child learns:
my information is not the world’s information.
Stories can provide practice too, but adults should not assume that merely reading stories automatically builds perspective-taking. A 2025 meta-analysis of 21 storybook studies involving 2,293 children aged 2–10 found an overall empathy-related effect, but the significant subgroup effect was on prosocial behaviour rather than consistently across all the perspective-taking-related outcomes. That is useful educationally.
Stories create opportunities.
Questions make the mental-state work visible.
- What does the character believe?
- What do we know that the character does not?
- What will they probably do next if that belief remains unchanged?
Now the child is modelling information states.
For Secondary Students
Secondary learners can become much more explicit.
They should distinguish what a person knows, what they believe, what they want, what evidence they have, what constraint they face, and whether those things justify their conclusion.
- In English: What does the narrator know that the reader does not?
- In History: What information was available to this actor at the time?
- In Mathematics: What step seems obvious to the expert but is still invisible to a novice?
- In Science: What would this evidence look like to someone using the wrong model?
- In group work: Can I state my partner’s objection in a form they accept before answering it?
- In feedback: What problem is the teacher actually trying to repair?
The adolescent years are a meaningful developmental period for perspective-taking. A review of developmental work concludes that perspective-taking abilities continue to refine through adolescence, with individual differences linked to social context and relationships. Read the review.
That makes Secondary school a particularly appropriate place to turn an implicit social ability into explicit intellectual craft.
For JC Students
JC perspective-taking should become epistemic.
Not merely:
How does this person feel?
But:
- What assumptions govern this position?
- What information does this stakeholder have?
- What outcome is being optimised?
- Which risks are visible from that role?
- What evidence would change this person’s position?
- Which constraints prevent an apparently obvious solution?
General Paper becomes much stronger when perspective means more than listing stakeholders.
A policy may look different to government, business, workers, families and future generations.
But a good GP essay should not automatically give all five equal weight.
It should identify the relevant information and consequences for each, then evaluate.
History becomes stronger when students reconstruct the information horizon of actors in the past rather than judging every decision with hindsight.
Economics becomes stronger when students understand that households, firms and policymakers may respond to the same condition under different objectives.
Science ethics becomes stronger when technical evidence and stakeholder consequences are kept distinct.
This is perspective-taking becoming analytical rather than merely social.
Perspective-Taking in English and Literature
Literature is one of civilisation’s great perspective machines.
A reader temporarily occupies another time, another family, another social position and another mind.
But the relationship between fiction and perspective-taking should be treated carefully.
Do not say:
Reading automatically makes people more empathetic.
Too broad.
Instead teach the operation.
- At this point in the novel, what does the character know?
- What are they mistaken about?
- What are they unable to see?
- Which motive is supported by the text?
- What does the reader know that changes our interpretation?
Now literary study becomes precise perspective work.
Perspective-Taking in History
History makes one particular error dangerous:
hindsight.
Once we know how events ended, earlier decisions can appear foolish or inevitable.
They were often neither.
Historical perspective-taking asks students to reconstruct a past actor’s context without importing later information they could not possess.
The student may still condemn an action morally.
Contextual understanding does not require moral neutrality.
It does require intellectual fairness.
Given the information available at the time, this decision was understandable as a response to X, although later evidence shows that the underlying assumption Y was incorrect.
That sentence carries two time states without confusing them.
Perspective-Taking in Mathematics
Mathematics may appear to have no perspective.
Two plus two remains four.
True.
But learning Mathematics is full of perspective differences.
- Expert sees structure.
- Novice sees surface.
- Teacher sees a missing prerequisite.
- Student sees a mysterious trick.
One of the strongest tutoring questions is:
What does the student think this symbol means?
Suppose the student writes:
2(x + 3) = 2x + 3.
The teacher knows distributivity.
The student may possess a different operational model:
remove the bracket.
Repeating “multiply both terms” may fix the line.
Perspective-taking asks:
What rule does the error reveal?
Now teaching becomes diagnostic.
The Mathematics itself remains objective.
The learner’s representation of it is perspectival.
That is the educational distinction.
Perspective-Taking in Science
Science needs perspective-taking mainly to distinguish models, evidence and observers.
One student thinks the plant “takes food from the soil.”
Another knows photosynthesis.
The same observation—a growing plant—looks different under the two models.
To repair the misconception, a teacher must first reconstruct the learner’s explanatory perspective.
Science also contains receiver positions.
- What can be observed directly?
- What can only be inferred?
- What would a scientist at an earlier historical stage have known?
- What does one instrument reveal that another cannot?
Perspective-taking does not change the scientific truth.
It changes our understanding of how different evidence states produce different interpretations.

A teacher writes:
Explain.
The student thinks:
I already wrote a lot.
Both are frustrated.
Perspective-taking can repair the handoff.

Now the real mismatch appears.
The teacher can say:
Your observation is already correct. I do not need more description. I need the causal link between the changed condition and the result.

Perspective-Taking in Research
Research often involves several legitimate perspectives on the same object.
- A statistician sees measurement and uncertainty.
- A clinician sees patient relevance.
- A sociologist sees social structure.
- An economist sees incentives.
- A historian sees change through time.
Good interdisciplinary research does not merely place these perspectives beside one another.
It asks what each representation reveals and hides.
The learner must also distinguish:
different disciplinary perspective
from
different factual answer.
Some questions are genuinely frame-dependent.
Others can be tested empirically.
Perspective-taking should enlarge the model of the problem without erasing standards of evidence.
Perspective-Taking in the Age of AI
AI creates an extraordinary perspective-taking temptation.
Ask:
- What would a twelve-year-old think?
- What would a doctor think?
- What would a teacher think?
- What would someone from another culture think?
AI answers.
Fluent.
Detailed.
Dangerous if misunderstood.
The model has generated a plausible representation.
It has not interviewed the person.
A language model can help generate candidate perspectives.
It cannot turn a stereotype into direct evidence.
This gives students a powerful AI discipline:

- Separate what is known about this group from assumptions you are making.
- Give me three plausible interpretations rather than one claimed inner state.
- What evidence would distinguish these perspectives?
- Which part of your description is inference rather than documented fact?
The 2026 virtual-technology meta-analysis suggests technology can support perspective-taking, but the heterogeneity and moderator effects are important: the design of the activity matters. Technology does not automatically produce perspective skill simply because it simulates another viewpoint.

Some poorly informed.
Some malicious.

“Consider every perspective” can become a way of avoiding decisions.
The stronger method is:
identify relevant perspectives → represent them accurately → identify their information and constraints → evaluate.

Fairness means representing material perspectives accurately.

The Wintour House Test: Does the Skill Survive When AI Can Simulate Anyone?
AI will become better at role simulation.
It will generate the novice view, the expert view, the customer view, the policymaker view, the child view, the critic view, the opposing argument and the future-self view.
Very useful.
What remains valuable?
- Knowing which perspective is relevant.
- Knowing what information that receiver actually possesses.
- Knowing which goals and constraints shape their reasoning.
- Knowing when your own knowledge is leaking into their model.
- Knowing whether the perspective is evidence-grounded or invented.
- Knowing how to represent an opposing position fairly.
- Knowing when perspectives are genuinely different rather than merely worded differently.
- Knowing when one perspective is better supported.
- Knowing how to test the receiver model.
- And finally: knowing when to return to your own judgement.
That is why Perspective-Taking belongs in the Skills Worth Learning series.
Not because every child must agree with everybody.
The opposite.
A learner who cannot understand an opposing position is poorly equipped to disagree with it intelligently.
The mature learner can say:
I understand what you know, what you are trying to achieve, which assumptions lead you there and why the conclusion makes sense from that position. I also know which parts I accept, which parts I reject, and what evidence decides the difference.
That is perspective-taking becoming intellectual independence.
Research Anchors
The ten skills above are a Wintour House editorial synthesis, not a claim that developmental or educational psychology has validated one universal ten-factor taxonomy of perspective-taking.
The current intervention evidence is promising but heterogeneous. Hu and colleagues’ 2026 British Journal of Educational Technology meta-analysis identified 20 experimental or quasi-experimental studies published between 2009 and 2024. Across the eligible comparisons, virtual technology produced a medium average perspective-taking effect, Hedges’ g = 0.505, while outcomes varied with learner stage, teaching method, feedback and intervention duration. Development does not stop in early childhood. A 2022 review of adolescent perspective-taking describes continued refinement through adolescence and discusses individual differences associated with family, peer and school environments. Read the review.
The difficulty of suppressing one’s own perspective is well established. Surtees and Apperly tested children aged 6–10 and adults and found that all age groups found it harder to judge another person’s perspective when it conflicted with their own; overall performance improved with age, but egocentric interference remained. The distinction from empathy is also research-grounded. Stietz and colleagues’ review synthesises behavioural and neural evidence distinguishing affect sharing from cognitive perspective-taking and argues against using empathy as an umbrella term for both. Read the review.
Evidence involving narrative exposure should be treated carefully. Ciesielska, Kucirkova and Thomson’s 2025 meta-analysis examined 21 storybook-reading studies involving 2,293 children aged 2–10. Finally, perspective-taking can improve strategic interaction without being synonymous with benevolence. Perspective-taking is not simply being considerate. It is the disciplined ability to separate one’s own knowledge from another receiver’s information state, reconstruct that receiver’s goals, constraints and interpretation, test the accuracy of the model, and then return to independent judgement with a more complete representation of the problem.
