Wait, What? A Worked Example Can Be Completely Clear and Still Leave the Student With No Study Route
A Mathematics page shows every line. A Science answer shows the full reasoning. An English model paragraph shows exactly how evidence and explanation fit together.
The student reads it and says, “Yes, I understand.”
Then the example disappears.
What happens next?
That question is not answered by the example itself. A worked example is a resource. The Student/Studying Interface still needs to make the route into it, through it and back out of it visible.

The Worked-Example Study Interface gives the student a simple operating sequence:

The interface succeeds when the student always knows what the example is for, when to stop looking at it, what to do next, and how to return if the transition fails.
The Owned Interface Job
This page owns one narrow study-surface job: how the learner operates a worked example as a resource and transitions from viewing the model to a separate attempt.
It does not own the cognitive explanation for why worked examples can help novices, when guidance should fade, or how examples affect cognitive load. MindOS already owns that learning mechanism in Worked Example State.
It also does not own whether later performance proves improvement. That is a different evidence question.
Before You Open the Example: Name Its Job
“Study this example” is too vague. The student should be able to complete one sentence:
This example is here to show me how ______ becomes ______.
For example:
- how a word relationship becomes an equation;
- how an observed Science change becomes a mechanism-based explanation;
- how quotation evidence becomes an English inference paragraph;
- how a graph is read before a calculation is selected.
If the student cannot say what the example is modelling, the first problem may be an interface problem: the resource is visible, but its study job is not.
Do Not Confuse the Page With the Route
Worked examples contain many visible things: numbers, annotations, arrows, prose, diagrams, final answers, side notes and sometimes teacher commentary. The study interface should make the route stand out from the decoration.

The student does not need to rewrite every visible line. The important interface question is whether the learner can point to the route and identify where one step hands control to the next.
The Exit Matters More Than It Looks
A common failure is that the resource never truly closes. The student attempts the next problem while looking back every few seconds. The answer may be completed, but the study state becomes hard to interpret because the model remained continuously available.
The interface therefore needs a visible transition:
Example open → route identified → example closed → learner attempt begins.
“Closed” can mean physically cover the page, switch tabs, scroll the solution away, fold the paper, or move to a separate workspace. The exact method is less important than making the change of state obvious.
A Six-Step Worked-Example Study Card
- Target: What route is this example showing?
- Source: Where is the example, and which version is current?
- Route: Mark the major steps or transitions.
- Question: Record any step that remains unclear.
- Exit: Close or cover the model.
- Next action: Attempt one related problem, explanation or construction without using the model as a live copy.
If the attempt breaks, do not immediately reopen the whole example and start copying again. First record where the route broke.
Use the Break as a Navigation Coordinate
Suppose the learner can set up the equation but cannot perform the second transformation. That is a more useful return point than “I still don’t get algebra”.
The interface can record:
- example location;
- step that became unclear;
- related attempt where the break appeared;
- whether the issue blocks continuation;
- next action: inspect locally, use an answer key, ask for help, or carry the question forward.
This keeps the study problem small enough to resume. It does not diagnose why the break occurred.
Three Subject Examples
Mathematics
The model shows how to form and solve a simultaneous equation from a word problem. The student labels the route: relationships → equations → solve → check against context. The example is closed. The learner then attempts a new problem with different wording. If the route breaks at “relationships → equations”, that location is recorded.
Science
A model answer shows changed condition → effect on process → observable result. The student does not memorise the final sentence as the study interface. They identify the route, close the example and build a response to a changed setup.
English
A model paragraph shows claim, evidence and explanation. The student marks those functions, closes the paragraph and constructs a new paragraph from a different passage. The Interface owns the transition from model to attempt; it does not claim that one paragraph structure is universally correct for all English tasks.
Failure Signatures
- The student copies the example into notes but never performs a separate attempt.
- The learner can follow each line while looking but cannot say what to do when the page closes.
- The next problem is attempted with the worked example permanently open beside it.
- The learner rereads the full model when only one step is unclear.
- The example source or version is lost, making later return difficult.
- The student treats the final answer as the important object and ignores the route.
Discrimination Check: Is the Example Interface the Problem?
Ask the student to do three things without explaining the subject:
- point to what the example is modelling;
- identify where the example ends and their own attempt begins;
- show what they will record if the attempt breaks.
If those interface moves are clear but the learner still cannot perform the underlying task, the next job likely belongs elsewhere—to subject teaching, MindOS or another route.
How Do We Know?
Worked-example research provides strong reason to take examples seriously as learning resources, particularly for less experienced learners. Research also warns that example quality and ambiguity matter, and that worked examples should not simply become a permanent substitute for later problem solving. A 2025 study in Contemporary Educational Psychology found that ambiguous examples could impair learning, while 2026 research comparing sequences of examples and problem solving found better performance in conditions that included active problem solving than in worked-example-only study.

Those studies concern learning mechanisms and instructional sequences. This Interface Manual makes a narrower claim: whenever a worked example is used, the learner benefits from a visible operating boundary between viewing the model and performing the next study action. The exact card above is a practical design, not a universally validated protocol.
For Parents and Tutors
Instead of asking only, “Do you understand the example?”, ask:
“When I close this page, what are you going to do first?”
If the student cannot answer, keep working on the interface before judging the learner. Perhaps the example’s target is unclear, the next attempt is missing, or the transition from model to independent workspace has never been made explicit.
Over time, the learner should increasingly perform the setup themselves: identify the example, state its job, close it, attempt the next task and record the break without an adult running the sequence.
Common Mistakes
- Copying the example as the entire study action.
- Keeping the model open during every later attempt.
- Using an example without naming what it models.
- Reopening the entire solution when one step is unclear.
- Assuming a clear example proves the learner can now perform.
- Making the Interface explain why worked examples work. That mechanism belongs to MindOS.
Finish and Resume Test
A worked-example session is ready to close when the student can identify:
- the example and its source;
- the route it models;
- the related attempt they made or will make next;
- the exact step where any uncertainty remains;
- the next action when the session resumes.
That is enough interface state to continue without rereading the whole resource from the beginning.
