Science: keep technical terms such as “diffusion” or “equilibrium” visible alongside any translation so the learner can reconnect the concept to the language used in class or assessment.

Humanities: translate a difficult sentence but inspect whether nuance, tone or historical terminology changed.

Primary: a parent can help translate the instruction while leaving the child to perform the actual academic task.

Parent Usefulness

Ask: “What exactly is the language blocking you from doing?” Then help reopen that route without doing the schoolwork. If the child understands the translated instruction and can continue independently, the interface has done its job.

Tutor and Teacher Guide

Where translation tools are permitted, make the role explicit. Decide whether the current task measures subject knowledge, target-language proficiency, or both. Those are different educational conditions. Provide glossaries or bilingual terminology where appropriate and teach learners to compare translations with context rather than accepting the first output automatically.

UNESCO’s 2025 Languages Matter guidance argues for multilingual education systems that enable learners to access quality education in languages they understand. CAST’s 2024 UDL Guidelines similarly recommend multiple ways of representing information, support for language and symbols, and accessible technologies. Together they support the educational principle that language access should be designed, not treated as a learner defect.

This manual does not claim that machine translation is equally accurate across languages, subjects or text types. Nor does it claim that translation improves learning by itself. Translation can remove an access barrier; what the learner then does with the accessible material belongs to the learning process.
